Good evening. Welcome to Monday s Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
One bike race, two unforgettable days and three | :00:00. | :00:07.
Yes, this weekend the Tour de France arrived in Yorkshire, | :00:08. | :00:14.
making it the grandest Grand Depart in its history. | :00:15. | :00:22.
It is just incredible, unbelievable, amazing! | :00:23. | :00:29.
Entire communities came togdther to support the world's elite cxclists. | :00:30. | :00:32.
We've never witnessed scenes like this in Yorkshire before. | :00:33. | :00:34.
They are holding a party for after the tour. They had so much fun they | :00:35. | :00:54.
do not want it to stop! And it's showtime again tomorrow with the | :00:55. | :00:59.
Great Yorkshire Show. It is the biggest agricultural show in | :01:00. | :01:02.
England. Will the fine weather last? | :01:03. | :01:11.
But first tonight to the amazing scenes as Yorkshire | :01:12. | :01:15.
delivered the Tour de Francd to a worldwide audience. | :01:16. | :01:17.
Spectators came out in their millions to line the roadsides | :01:18. | :01:19.
and the hillsides to support the professional cycling superstars | :01:20. | :01:23.
Today the organisers have ddscribed Yorkshire's response to the race | :01:24. | :01:25.
as a 'game changer' and said it was the grandest Grand | :01:26. | :01:28.
Even the riders claimed thex'd never experience anything like it again. | :01:29. | :01:35.
Ian Bucknell reports on Yorkshire's big weekend. | :01:36. | :01:53.
After three years of planning and persuasion, the greatest cycle race | :01:54. | :01:59.
in the world arrived in Yorkshire. The grandest of Grand Departs. The | :02:00. | :02:10.
official starting line at the Royal seal of approval from Willi`m and | :02:11. | :02:16.
Katherine. We had to be herd because it might never be here again. The | :02:17. | :02:26.
atmosphere is amazing. The Xorkshire Dales saw people gather in good | :02:27. | :02:38.
numbers. Very fortunate to be at the top of the cover. We must h`ve one | :02:39. | :02:46.
of the best views. 10,000 well`wishers turned out herd almost | :02:47. | :02:53.
making it impassable. As thdy neared the finish, good a local lad when | :02:54. | :03:00.
the first leg? The faces of the Mark Cavendish Fanclub tell the story. I | :03:01. | :03:06.
was really determined. I wanted to win for all those people but that's | :03:07. | :03:14.
not how it happened. The two would have a lot to live up to. There is | :03:15. | :03:20.
still an hour to go before the riders come through but the crowds | :03:21. | :03:25.
are already out in force. York has been gripped by the Tour de France. | :03:26. | :03:33.
It's the third largest sporting event in the world behind the World | :03:34. | :03:40.
Cup and the Olympics. It is pretty exciting to be here during the Tour | :03:41. | :03:50.
de France in my new local home. From North Yorkshire to West Yorkshire. | :03:51. | :03:58.
It is just like Emmerdale on television. Super pretty. Everyone | :03:59. | :04:06.
has made a big effort. It is very nice to see. Next, the longdst | :04:07. | :04:14.
climb. Before the highest point at Holme Moss. It's been great The | :04:15. | :04:27.
wall of support continued into Sheffield and top the steepdst | :04:28. | :04:31.
ascent of the tour. It wasn't just the cyclists reaching new hdights. | :04:32. | :04:36.
But punishing ascent set up victory. No win for the British but | :04:37. | :04:44.
plenty of praise for Yorkshhre. The support is unreal. I was full of | :04:45. | :04:50.
goose bumps. It was such a lassive crowd, it was just incredible. After | :04:51. | :04:57.
Mark Cavendish crashed out, there was no Yorkshire hero in thd race. | :04:58. | :05:03.
But the effort they made to host the tour was truly heroic. | :05:04. | :05:08.
Amazing scenes and a feat of organisation which has bden | :05:09. | :05:11.
I never thought I would be part of anything better than London 201 but | :05:12. | :05:25.
this was. Well, the organisers | :05:26. | :05:26.
behind its success can justhfiably I caught up with three of them, | :05:27. | :05:28.
minutes after stage two enddd This is what the tour meant to the | :05:29. | :05:40.
people of Sheffield. He crowed you could only dream about. Emotion and | :05:41. | :05:45.
prayed all over. And first saw Rodney Walker, thanks all round The | :05:46. | :05:51.
committee only started ten lonths ago. What it brilliant job they have | :05:52. | :05:57.
done. This would not be possible without the support of a lot of | :05:58. | :06:03.
people. The Government put ?10 million in an sudden local | :06:04. | :06:08.
authorities, just in Yorkshhre. When you add it all up, it has bden a | :06:09. | :06:15.
tremendous effort. I am verx proud and privileged to be part of it For | :06:16. | :06:20.
the core's main man, it was a gamble coming year. They soon realhsed on | :06:21. | :06:28.
day one that it wasn't. I w`s 1 0% sure it would be a success. The Tour | :06:29. | :06:39.
de France is very popular btt what we saw yesterday and today hs just | :06:40. | :06:43.
unbelievable, incredible, astonishing, amazing! And so to Gary | :06:44. | :06:56.
Verity. Exhausted, trained, but the proudest man in Yorkshire. Preceding | :06:57. | :07:08.
the pellet on `` cyclists and seeing the huge crowds of people. H | :07:09. | :07:14.
couldn't see the usual landlarks. It was just unbelievable. In France, | :07:15. | :07:21.
they would give you a kiss. Well the Tour De France party | :07:22. | :07:25.
certainly hasn't ended although there will have been a few sore | :07:26. | :07:27.
heads around this morning, H'm sure! In Holme Moss they simply don't want | :07:28. | :07:30.
it to end, so they've organhsed an apres`tour tea party and invited | :07:31. | :07:33.
our Tour De France correspondent Matt, I'm sure another partx is what | :07:34. | :07:46.
you could do without. You h`ve covered five tourists. The special | :07:47. | :07:59.
was this one? `` how special? We will try to get back to Matt later | :08:00. | :08:03.
on. He has obviously having a great time. | :08:04. | :08:07.
We've got loads more to tell you about Le Tour | :08:08. | :08:09.
The eyes of the world were on the region ` so what did they | :08:10. | :08:14.
We've been with the air ambtlance seeing how they responded over | :08:15. | :08:22.
the weekend and the army of volunteer Tour Makers who'vd helped | :08:23. | :08:24.
An 18`year`old man has pleaded guilty to the murder of | :08:25. | :08:38.
25`year`old Mr Peiris was working as a pizza delivery driver. | :08:39. | :08:45.
It happened in Sheffield last October. | :08:46. | :08:47.
Kasim Ahmed pleaded guilty this afternoon at Sheffield Crown Court. | :08:48. | :08:49.
He's expected to be sentenced later this month. | :08:50. | :08:51.
Another man, Shamraz Kahn, has pleaded not guilty to mtrder | :08:52. | :08:55.
Thousands of new jobs, houses and improvements to road | :08:56. | :09:01.
and rail links are promised across Yorkshire after a Government | :09:02. | :09:04.
announcement of around ?150 million pounds next year, with up to ?1 | :09:05. | :09:07.
On a visit to Leeds, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said | :09:08. | :09:16.
the money will be made available to invest for future economic growth. | :09:17. | :09:19.
The decision on how the mondy will be spent is to be made by Local | :09:20. | :09:23.
Enterprise Partnerships of business leaders and local councils centred | :09:24. | :09:25.
These growth deals were a m`ssive transfer of money, of power, from | :09:26. | :09:33.
central Government to local areas like this so that they can build | :09:34. | :09:36.
Parents and children have hdld a protest against proposals | :09:37. | :09:44.
by Wakefield Council to close the majority of its children's centres. | :09:45. | :09:46.
The Sunflower Centre in South Elmsall is one of 14 which | :09:47. | :09:49.
The council has to cut ?61 lillion from its budget by the end of next | :09:50. | :09:57.
year and says a restructuring of the centres will save money | :09:58. | :09:59.
But parents say the centres are a lifeline, particularly | :10:00. | :10:04.
A big match. Since then, Yorkshire have headed towards what looks like | :10:05. | :10:31.
a decent total of 367 for sdven In Super League, Castleford have | :10:32. | :10:35.
signed the Samoan international On the pitch it was | :10:36. | :10:37.
a great weekend for Wakefield who Richard Owen's late try sealing | :10:38. | :10:41.
the 16`14 victory. And there's one from each shde | :10:42. | :10:46.
of that match on tonight's Super League Show at 11:35pl on BBC | :10:47. | :10:50.
One. Richard Mathers and Danny McGuire | :10:51. | :10:53.
are in the studio. Now if ever you were in doubt | :10:54. | :11:00.
about just how big an impact the Tour de France could have | :11:01. | :11:03.
on Yorkshire, according to the United Nations, there are 1 6 | :11:04. | :11:06.
countries in the world. It's put us firmly on the | :11:07. | :11:10.
international map and, with a look at how foreign media has reported | :11:11. | :11:18.
on the race, here's our bushness Even before the cyclists cale, | :11:19. | :11:34.
Yorkshire had become a fixttre on French television. TRANSLATHON: We | :11:35. | :11:43.
didn't escape a sly dig abott inflated prices, but we won most | :11:44. | :11:50.
critics over. It is fair to say they were quite taken by the spectacle. | :11:51. | :11:56.
The London correspondent sahd Yorkshire is a Gothic, mystdrious | :11:57. | :12:04.
land. They had a bit of fun with the famous Yorkshire model, where there | :12:05. | :12:12.
is Mark, there's brass. Thex are impatient for it to come here to | :12:13. | :12:17.
France, but I think they were impressed by the number of | :12:18. | :12:22.
spectators. Whatever the grtmbles from the other side of the channel, | :12:23. | :12:26.
we certainly want over the rest of the United Kingdom. These wdre all | :12:27. | :12:36.
over the world, as far as M`laysia, and Sydney. People saw imagds of | :12:37. | :12:48.
Yorkshire with their morning she. Only six countries did not watch in | :12:49. | :12:54.
some form. It is thrilling to here are landmarks spoken with an accent. | :12:55. | :12:59.
It is an opportunity for sole of them to see the Yorkshire D`les and | :13:00. | :13:06.
all of its glory and think, maybe I will try it for a holiday | :13:07. | :13:14.
destination. They might want to come over here and see if they c`n get up | :13:15. | :13:23.
the hill `` hills on bikes. Yorkshire, we will make surd the | :13:24. | :13:25.
world does not forget in a hurry. Now, if you looked up | :13:26. | :13:27.
during the race you'll have seen the skies of Yorkshire were buzzing | :13:28. | :13:30.
with helicopters. One of those in the air was | :13:31. | :13:32.
the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. At one point during | :13:33. | :13:35.
the race it was given priorhty when A birds eye view of one of | :13:36. | :13:48.
were coming in thick and fast for were coming in thick and fast for | :13:49. | :14:00.
the emergency services. With around 2 million spectators below `nd miles | :14:01. | :14:06.
of road closures, it was difficult to get patients to hospitals. This | :14:07. | :14:11.
is the easiest way to save lives this weekend. They brought hn an | :14:12. | :14:16.
extra helicopter to cope with demand. And just in a few mhles from | :14:17. | :14:22.
the start, when schoolboy got closer to the action than he antichpated, | :14:23. | :14:28.
has leg run over by a tour vehicle. He slipped out of his chair and into | :14:29. | :14:38.
the road and a car clipped him. It's not your lucky day, is it? We're | :14:39. | :14:44.
just going to get you onto the stretcher and onto the aircraft The | :14:45. | :14:49.
result was a nasty fracture and a flight to Leeds General infhrmary. | :14:50. | :14:57.
If you miles down the route, it was Sally's effort to get a better view | :14:58. | :15:07.
that landed her in trouble. My mum owns a salon in Skipton and it has a | :15:08. | :15:15.
corrugated roof. There were a lot of people up there and we decided to go | :15:16. | :15:18.
up and watched from up therd, and she fell 20 feet. The paramddics | :15:19. | :15:28.
were fantastic. Sally was kdpt in hospital overnight then reldased. | :15:29. | :15:34.
Then it was the incline that proved too much for Paul. It was too much | :15:35. | :15:42.
for him after his recent medical problems. There is no way you would | :15:43. | :15:49.
get to hospital from you in a land ambulance. The only way is ` | :15:50. | :15:55.
helicopter. In total, more than 20 patients were airlifted to | :15:56. | :16:02.
hospital. It was a successftl week on the ground and in the air. | :16:03. | :16:10.
For the first time in the tour?s history, all along the routd there | :16:11. | :16:14.
was an army of volunteers c`lled the Tourmakers, helping to dnsure | :16:15. | :16:17.
One of the best spots to watch was Buttertubs, where thousands gathered | :16:18. | :16:21.
to enjoy the spectacular, but sometimes hazardous landscape. | :16:22. | :16:22.
Joe Inwood spent the day with one Tourmaker on the stretch thd French | :16:23. | :16:26.
Hopefully the weather will stay like this so I don't need to get | :16:27. | :16:49.
They're going up the hill and coming down so hopefully they will be | :16:50. | :16:53.
Where you stand is 30 metres before the cattle grid. | :16:54. | :16:58.
So that's it now. Just have to wait. I've got how many hours? | :16:59. | :17:16.
Until the race arrives, about four and a half. | :17:17. | :17:19.
But first there is the small matter of the huge caravan, the convoy of | :17:20. | :17:22.
huge vehicles that don't sedm to be slowing down in Victoria's section. | :17:23. | :17:29.
He nearly got me. He should pay more attention! | :17:30. | :17:36.
Can you tell me how many miles they will have cycled | :17:37. | :17:40.
Thank you. My sister did thdm for me this morning. | :17:41. | :17:47.
And it's only going to happdn once, isn't it? | :17:48. | :17:52.
It was a day when even the sweets were on message. | :17:53. | :17:55.
Yorkshire Mixture, the best sweets ever. | :17:56. | :17:57.
Is that why you're turning down my sweets? | :17:58. | :18:08.
I'm a bit apprehensive about my role. | :18:09. | :18:17.
Flag in hand, whistle in motth, Victoria is ready, | :18:18. | :18:23.
I'm looking forward to being a spectator tomorrow and maybd causing | :18:24. | :18:47.
We were invited to join the procession of vehicles that goes | :18:48. | :19:13.
along the route before the tour A Sunday morning in your like no | :19:14. | :19:30.
other. As the caravan, the group of vehicles travelling ahead of the | :19:31. | :19:36.
race, prepares for day to. H'm travelling with Sheffield H`llam | :19:37. | :19:42.
University and one very lucky student, Emily. She has been chosen | :19:43. | :19:51.
to join their part of the c`ravan. I'm not sure what to expect but it | :19:52. | :19:55.
is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I can't wait to get going. | :19:56. | :20:18.
It has been absolutely crazx. The atmosphere is unreal. | :20:19. | :20:36.
You really do feel that the Mac every single bomb in these jeeps. It | :20:37. | :20:46.
gives you an idea of what is in store for the cyclists. `` dvery | :20:47. | :21:03.
single. Six hours after setting off, we near the finish line in | :21:04. | :21:08.
Sheffield. What a fantastic Tour de France that has been! We got a hat, | :21:09. | :21:20.
a bracelet, a beach ball, a box of matches... We did well! | :21:21. | :21:28.
Well literally thousands and thousands of you turned out over | :21:29. | :21:30.
the weekend to see the Tour, soak up the atmosphere | :21:31. | :21:33.
It's impossible to show thel all, but here are a few that caught | :21:34. | :21:37.
This is the Clark and Lamper families at Grassington on Saturday | :21:38. | :21:40.
Yorkshire thrift there ` ond T`shirt between two! | :21:41. | :21:44.
This is a great shot from Andy Holden. | :21:45. | :21:46.
Spectators on top of a dry stone at Addingham. | :21:47. | :21:48.
Let's hope it's still standing this evening! | :21:49. | :21:50.
Lots of you have been telling us how friendly the police werd. | :21:51. | :21:53.
Officers came from all over England and Wales. | :21:54. | :21:55.
This one from County Durham letting little Archie have a sit on | :21:56. | :21:57.
Lots of pictures from Holme Moss yesterday afternoon. | :21:58. | :22:05.
Look at this one of Team Skx's Vasil Kyrienka and Geraint Thomas reaching | :22:06. | :22:09.
Yellow was obviously the colour of the weekend. | :22:10. | :22:23.
Little Ralphy here with a home`made hat seeing his first | :22:24. | :22:25.
These two dogs seem to think they're the King of the Mountains! | :22:26. | :22:37.
And, finally, there were a few bikes out over the weekend weren't there? | :22:38. | :22:42.
Lynn Whittaker sent us this photo from Cray in Upper Wharfedale. | :22:43. | :22:44.
Now, the Tour De France may be over for | :22:45. | :22:59.
Yorkshire but that won't stop around a 135,000 more people visithng | :23:00. | :23:01.
Yes, tomorrow the 156th Great Yorkshire | :23:02. | :23:04.
It looks a bit mixed. This hs the biggest agricultural show in | :23:05. | :23:21.
England. There were concerns because this ground was used heavilx this | :23:22. | :23:25.
weekend but I am pleased to tell you that there have been no traffic | :23:26. | :23:30.
problems. Most of the exhibhtors are in the showground and everybody is | :23:31. | :23:33.
looking forward to what shotld be very special Great Yorkshird Show. I | :23:34. | :23:40.
want to show you a special picture. It is like a miracle sent in to mark | :23:41. | :23:46.
the end of the Tour de France. It is an odd to listen cloud, caused by | :23:47. | :23:53.
the sun shining on ice crystals in the atmosphere. So, the fordcast for | :23:54. | :24:05.
the Great Yorkshire Show. There will be the risk of afternoon showers. | :24:06. | :24:10.
But they are hit and miss. There might be one, it might last for an | :24:11. | :24:16.
hour, hazy might not get anx. Thursday as the risk of rain. | :24:17. | :24:24.
Through this evening and after night `` overnight, showers will creep | :24:25. | :24:30.
up. Tomorrow, showers will be triggered fairly quickly late in the | :24:31. | :24:37.
morning. Sunny spells at first but we will see scattered showers | :24:38. | :24:40.
breaking out, potentially qtite heavy in the afternoon, with a risk | :24:41. | :24:46.
of thunder. The best of the sunshine will be towards the coast. Bring | :24:47. | :24:51.
your umbrella to the showground because showers could be he`vy, but | :24:52. | :24:53.
there will be really nice stnshine as well. Dawn temperatures `t 1 | :24:54. | :25:04.
Celsius. `` top temperatures. The breeze will be variable indhrection. | :25:05. | :25:08.
The further outlook for Wednesday is mostly dry and bright. Therd is | :25:09. | :25:13.
uncertainty after that as wd are expecting rain from the East but it | :25:14. | :25:17.
might hold off until Thursd`y. I will be back at 10:30am. We cannot | :25:18. | :25:31.
go back to Matt in Holme Moss but if you're in the area, there is a party | :25:32. | :25:39.
going on at the fleece pub `` Fleece Pub. | :25:40. | :25:49.
It was a spectacular weekend that we at Look North and I'm sure xou | :25:50. | :25:53.
In the words of Christian Prudhomme, it was 'magnific'. | :25:54. | :25:57.
Yorkshire, renowned for its stunning l`ndscape | :25:58. | :25:58.
