Good evening. the late news here on

:00:07.:00:07.

Hundreds of conservationists joined TV presenter Chris Packham

:00:08.:00:10.

in the Peak District National Park this morning.

:00:11.:00:13.

They fear hen harriers, a protected bird of prey, are being killed to

:00:14.:00:16.

increase the number of grouse ahead of the new shooting season.

:00:17.:00:19.

Conservationists gathered today over concerns that only three pairs

:00:20.:00:26.

of hen harriers successfully nested and reared young in the North

:00:27.:00:30.

They are protected birds of prey and killing them is a criminal offence.

:00:31.:00:37.

Conservationists say gamekeepers are responsible for declining numbers.

:00:38.:00:42.

If I'm very honest with you, we the conservationists have failed and we

:00:43.:00:45.

are left with this handful of birds, should have hundreds of them.

:00:46.:00:48.

We need to find a new strategy and that is what we hope to do.

:00:49.:00:52.

The first thing we want to do is send out a very clear message to

:00:53.:00:55.

the shooting fraternity that among the large number

:00:56.:00:58.

of responsible shooters, there are a few bad apples in that barrel.

:00:59.:01:01.

We would like them to sort them out, to stop killing these birds so that

:01:02.:01:06.

we can talk about their future in our landscape and find compromises

:01:07.:01:09.

Hen harriers are attracted to our moorland because of the way it

:01:10.:01:15.

They nurture the heather to encourage grouse to live and breed.

:01:16.:01:20.

This creates the perfect habitat for a large number of wild birds.

:01:21.:01:25.

Heather moorland is beautiful and it would almost have been lost

:01:26.:01:29.

if it wasn't for grouse moor management over the last 200 years.

:01:30.:01:33.

The harriers are attracted to them because the heather is there

:01:34.:01:36.

Because there is a wonderful abundance of wader birds like curlew

:01:37.:01:40.

And also, the gamekeepers control the number of predators giving

:01:41.:01:45.

everything that nests on the ground, including the harrier,

:01:46.:01:48.

Gamekeepers argue the numbers of hen harriers need to be

:01:49.:01:55.

controlled otherwise a grouse shoot becomes uneconomic, threatening

:01:56.:01:57.

rural jobs and the carefully managed habitat hen harriers rely on.

:01:58.:02:02.

The government is currently working on a plan to increase the number of

:02:03.:02:05.

this endangered bird of prey while allowing our moorland to flourish.

:02:06.:02:15.

A West Yorkshire MP has accused Lady Warsi,

:02:16.:02:18.

who resigned from government last week, of "embarassing herself" by

:02:19.:02:21.

Lady Warsi resigned from government because she disagreed with

:02:22.:02:27.

In newspaper articles today she predicted the Tories will be unable

:02:28.:02:31.

to win an outright majority because they haven't done enough to

:02:32.:02:35.

It's a claim dismissed by Elmet and Rothwell MP Alec Shelbrooke.

:02:36.:02:42.

In answer to the specific question, has she embarrassed the party?

:02:43.:02:45.

I think it is more of an embarrassment to herself today, that

:02:46.:02:48.

she has moved from her principled resignation about an issue she

:02:49.:02:52.

believes strongly in, to then start criticizing the government in many

:02:53.:02:56.

other areas which haven't reflected in her original resignation.

:02:57.:03:00.

Police say road signs marking the route of the Tour de France

:03:01.:03:03.

through Yorkshire are being stolen as souvenirs.

:03:04.:03:06.

The brown signs allow cyclists and motorists to follow

:03:07.:03:09.

the route taken by the professional riders in early July.

:03:10.:03:12.

But North Yorkshire Police say some of the signs have been offered

:03:13.:03:14.

They're asking people who took the signs as trophies to give them back.

:03:15.:03:21.

Huddersfield Town manager Mark Robins has left the club after

:03:22.:03:24.

The 44`year`old took charge of the Terriers in February 2013, helping

:03:25.:03:29.

But there were boos around the ground yesterday as Huddersfield

:03:30.:03:35.

His contract was ended by mutual consent.

:03:36.:03:48.

On to Sport and it'll be an all Yorkshire affair in this years'

:03:49.:03:51.

Castleford Tigers blew Widnes Vikings away in the semi`final

:03:52.:03:55.

Classy Cas booked their first trip to Wembley Stadium in 22 years.

:03:56.:04:00.

Jake Webster's try providing an emphatic victory, by 28 points to 6.

:04:01.:04:05.

The win sets up an all West Yorkshire final against

:04:06.:04:07.

Leeds Rhinos, who beat Warrington yesterday.

:04:08.:04:11.

And it was a good day for Yorkshire's pro cyclists

:04:12.:04:14.

at the Ride London Surrey Classic this afternoon.

:04:15.:04:17.

Adam Blythe and Ben Swift came first and second

:04:18.:04:19.

With just a few metres to go, Blythe sprinted away from the leaders,

:04:20.:04:25.

But Blythe held on and crossed the line first.

:04:26.:04:31.

It follows Lizzie Armitstead's success in the

:04:32.:04:33.

The remnants of ex`hurricane Bertha have brought some very wild weather

:04:34.:04:45.

If we take a look at the radar image of some very

:04:46.:04:49.

squally showers that we have seen so far this afternoon, we can see

:04:50.:04:52.

a very distinct line and we have had reports of some funnel cloud

:04:53.:04:55.

We will continue to see some further heavy rain

:04:56.:04:59.

A Met Office yellow 'be aware' warning still in force,

:05:00.:05:03.

but it really is the winds that are of concern overnight.

:05:04.:05:06.

There is a warning as we could see gusts of up to 50 to

:05:07.:05:09.

60 miles per hour up over the hills and by the coast as well.

:05:10.:05:13.

And we'll continue to see this rain push further away towards the east,

:05:14.:05:18.

becoming a bit drier by the early hours.

:05:19.:05:20.

Temperatures dipping to around 11 to 13 Celsius as our low.

:05:21.:05:25.

Tomorrow, another very blustery day with strong to gale force winds

:05:26.:05:29.

There will be some heavy showers, which could be thundery,

:05:30.:05:34.

but plenty in the way of drier weather around them.

:05:35.:05:37.

Some sunnier spells and temperatures generally in the high teens but

:05:38.:05:40.

That is as far as we go for now. We are back at 10:20pm tonight.

:05:41.:06:07.

Hello there. With reports of flooding and wind damage in some

:06:08.:06:12.

parts of the UK, hurricane
