That is all from the BBC News at 6.00. Now on | :00:00. | :00:00.
I didn't know what we were going to do or anything, and it was worrying | :00:07. | :00:19.
that the pair of us could have been out on the street and all | :00:20. | :00:22.
We speak to a representative from the insurance industry. | :00:23. | :00:31.
The charity helping the hungry by picking up surplus stock. | :00:32. | :00:40.
The blind man trying to beat his own landspeed record | :00:41. | :00:44.
It has been a day of wind and showers. I will be back with the | :00:45. | :00:58.
details for tomorrow. So have you had your summer holiday | :00:59. | :01:08.
or are you busy packing for it? More importantly, | :01:09. | :01:12.
will you have holiday insurance? Figures show one | :01:13. | :01:14.
in five holiday`makers go abroad Over 4,000 people a week make | :01:15. | :01:17.
a claim on their travel insurance for medical treatment while abroad, | :01:18. | :01:23.
meaning insurance companies pay out But tonight we talk to a pensioner | :01:24. | :01:27.
who nearly lost his home after he got a bill for more than ?40,000 | :01:28. | :01:34.
after becoming ill on holiday, In a moment, we'll be talking to | :01:35. | :01:38.
the Association of British Insurers, but first, here's our health | :01:39. | :01:46.
correspondent, Jamie Coulson. When John McKenny went to Benidorm | :01:47. | :01:55.
in January with his wife, their holiday turned into a nightmare. The | :01:56. | :01:59.
81`year`old was taken ill with suspected pneumonia and then needed | :02:00. | :02:03.
an emergency operation on a stomach ulcer. But despite having travel | :02:04. | :02:08.
insurance, the company he bought it from refuse to cover the Spanish | :02:09. | :02:13.
hospital bills of more than ?40,000. `` refused. I did not know | :02:14. | :02:18.
what we were going to do anything. And it was worrying. The pair of us | :02:19. | :02:21.
could have been out on the street with all our savings gone and | :02:22. | :02:28.
everything. The policy offers holiday`makers peace of mind! The | :02:29. | :02:34.
group refused to pay out, claiming he had misrepresented his medical | :02:35. | :02:38.
history and saying the claim related to pre`existing conditions, | :02:39. | :02:43.
something John's family disputed. It was pretty frustrating but then that | :02:44. | :02:48.
turned to anger, because John and Edna, they had paid their premium | :02:49. | :02:52.
and they were entitled to a service. And the insurance company, Ace, | :02:53. | :03:00.
flatly refuse to do anything for them. Faced with the prospect of | :03:01. | :03:04.
losing his home and locked in a dispute with the insurance company, | :03:05. | :03:09.
John and his wife turned to the financial ombudsman, who launched | :03:10. | :03:12.
their own investigation. The ombudsman found that the company had | :03:13. | :03:16.
been unreasonable and had handled John's claim unreasonably, and this | :03:17. | :03:19.
would have caused distress and inconvenience. We don't often see | :03:20. | :03:24.
cases where the insurance company has got these things this badly | :03:25. | :03:30.
wrong, but it causes great distress and at a very difficult time, and | :03:31. | :03:34.
this could easily have been resolved if the insurance company had | :03:35. | :03:37.
bothered to do the basic checks we would expect them to do as part of | :03:38. | :03:42.
any claim. For the past 20 years, we have always had a holiday. The | :03:43. | :03:48.
company has admitted the service did not meet the high standards it | :03:49. | :03:53.
normally expect of itself. John and his family should now have their | :03:54. | :03:54.
bills paid. Earlier I spoke with Malcolm Tarling | :03:55. | :03:57.
from the Association of I asked him how common it is for an | :03:58. | :04:01.
insurance company not to pay out. I can't comment on individual cases, | :04:02. | :04:06.
but what I can say is that it's extremely rare that problems | :04:07. | :04:09.
like this arise. Insurers are there to pay out | :04:10. | :04:11.
on treatment that people need They're paying out over ?4 million | :04:12. | :04:14.
every week to help holiday`makers In John McKenny's case, | :04:15. | :04:18.
he paid his premium, he was entitled to cover and peace of mind, yet when | :04:19. | :04:24.
it came to paying out, the insurance Are they just looking | :04:25. | :04:28.
for loopholes to trip people up? Travel insurers are | :04:29. | :04:33.
there to pay claims. They're not there to look | :04:34. | :04:35.
for loopholes to trip people up. They pay out over 4,000 claims every | :04:36. | :04:38.
single week in medical expenses That's what they're there to do | :04:39. | :04:43.
and that's what people expect. How can you be sure you are fully | :04:44. | :04:49.
covered if you take out insurance? The most important thing to do is | :04:50. | :04:52.
check what you are covered If you have | :04:53. | :04:55.
a pre`existing condition, check to see if that's covered, if you have | :04:56. | :05:00.
a serious medical condition that may not be covered by a standard | :05:01. | :05:03.
policy, shop around, go to a local The vast majority of people, | :05:04. | :05:07.
regardless of their medical conditions, should be able to get | :05:08. | :05:11.
affordable travel insurance. And if you're told a company | :05:12. | :05:14.
won't pay up, should you do what If you run into problems claiming, | :05:15. | :05:17.
go back to the insurance company and they'll do everything they can | :05:18. | :05:23.
to resolve the problem. If you're still unhappy, | :05:24. | :05:25.
you may wish to contact If you have any horror holiday | :05:26. | :05:36.

has been heavily criticised for locking up inmates in cells | :05:53. | :05:55.
without electricity or running water Doncaster Jail, which is run by | :05:56. | :05:58.
security firm Serco, was found to have levels of violence up to four | :05:59. | :06:03.
times higher than in similar jails Since it opened two decades ago, HMP | :06:04. | :06:23.
Doncaster has been run by a private company. The involvement of | :06:24. | :06:27.
organisations like Serco has always been controversial with campaigners | :06:28. | :06:32.
and unions. Today's report, following a snap inspection, will | :06:33. | :06:35.
doodle to change that. It talks of a prison in decline where staff did | :06:36. | :06:40.
not appear fully in control of some wings. `` will do little. Inmates | :06:41. | :06:47.
were locked in cells with no running water or electricity for more than | :06:48. | :06:52.
two days. We have made a number of recommendations in our report and | :06:53. | :06:55.
the urgent one is that they address the level of violence. We also have | :06:56. | :07:01.
concerns around drug treatment and we feel that approach was quite | :07:02. | :07:05.
dangerous and needs to be addressed urgently. Those requests, it seems, | :07:06. | :07:12.
are no surprise to the company who runs the jail. This is what they | :07:13. | :07:13.
said. According to campaigners, if those | :07:14. | :07:26.
improvements are not made, it will have an impact on all of us. People | :07:27. | :07:31.
are not going to go out well`prepared for a responsible | :07:32. | :07:34.
life, which is what prison is meant to be doing. Instead they will be | :07:35. | :07:38.
out. They are inside one day and out the next. Far too often, they are | :07:39. | :07:44.
back the next. But Serco and the Ministry of Justice point to success | :07:45. | :07:48.
in cutting reoffending rates. But this will mean little to those who | :07:49. | :07:50.
say profit and prisons do not mix. Later on Look North, | :07:51. | :07:54.
the Yorkshire vet saving the lives In other news, 60,000 people have | :07:55. | :07:57.
signed an online petition urging Sheffield United not to reinstate | :07:58. | :08:07.
convicted rapist Ched Evans once Evans, seen here in the black suit, | :08:08. | :08:10.
was jailed for five years in 2012 He's due to be released | :08:11. | :08:17.

it's been in touch with Evans since his conviction but today it | :08:25. | :08:30.
wouldn't comment further. The number of people who are | :08:31. | :08:36.
unemployed in Yorkshire has fallen Figures for the period between April | :08:37. | :08:39.
and June show there were 218,000 That's 12,000 fewer than | :08:40. | :08:44.
the previous quarter. The regional unemployment rate is | :08:45. | :08:49.
now 7.8%, which is The parents of a four`year`old boy | :08:50. | :08:52.
killed in a house fire in Keighley Nathan Harrison died | :08:53. | :08:59.
in hospital after the fire In a statement, | :09:00. | :09:03.
his mother Jodie Collins described him as a loving, happy, | :09:04. | :09:08.
sweet child who loved everybody. His father Chris said | :09:09. | :09:13.
the family were distraught at The cause of the fire is | :09:14. | :09:15.
still under investigation. A Yorkshire charity has told | :09:16. | :09:30.
Look North that demand is soaring Fareshare gives wasted food | :09:31. | :09:33.
from supermarkets to other charities In 2011 they were serving | :09:34. | :09:36.
around 650,000 meals a year. Last year it reached 800,000 | :09:37. | :09:40.
and this year is expected to top But this isn't food that has gone | :09:41. | :09:43.
off or is being thrown out It's food that has been over`ordered | :09:44. | :09:48.
and won't even get to the shops. Tucked away | :09:49. | :09:51.
on an industrial estate in Barnsley Not food thrown away | :09:52. | :09:58.
by supermarkets but stuff that is It hasn't been anywhere | :09:59. | :10:03.
near a shelf or a pricing`gun. Right, so what we've got in here is | :10:04. | :10:11.
mincemeat supplied to us each week. So we have a palette | :10:12. | :10:15.
of mincemeat supplied to us from a manufacturer called ABP, | :10:16. | :10:18.
and that will go into a hot meal Most people wouldn't believe | :10:19. | :10:21.
the leftovers. I think they'd be shocked that | :10:22. | :10:29.
this food is potentially waste. If it wasn't in our warehouse here | :10:30. | :10:34.
and being distributed this week, it So I think it is | :10:35. | :10:37.
a shocking statistic. But actually, there's a lot more | :10:38. | :10:42.
food out there that Fareshare Over the last three years, | :10:43. | :10:45.
the number of meals they've provided has gone | :10:46. | :10:52.
up, and Fareshare Yorkshire thinks Once the van is packed up, | :10:53. | :10:55.
it's off to one of the charities they help, this time to Avalunch, | :10:56. | :11:03.
which has been here for 14 years. In fact, | :11:04. | :11:07.
we're at the point where we wouldn't survive if Fareshare didn't bring us | :11:08. | :11:17.
their products, so we can still They can have up to 50 people | :11:18. | :11:19.
in here for their cheap meals made And this is where it ends up being | :11:20. | :11:25.
delivered to 84`year`old Doreen I mean, | :11:26. | :11:37.
half of it is done without pay. As people queue up at the end | :11:38. | :11:46.
of the foodchain, Fareshare says it would be better if their services | :11:47. | :11:53.
weren't needed at all. But for now, | :11:54. | :11:56.
they're helping thousands of people What an incredible story. And those | :11:57. | :11:59.
Yorkshire puddings didn't look bad! Still to come, a full round`up of | :12:00. | :12:16.
all last night's football action. Plus, up for a title, as Kell Brooks | :12:17. | :12:19.
arrives in America to face IBF world And 11 years | :12:20. | :12:23.
after his first successful world landspeed record attempt, can blind | :12:24. | :12:28.

from Hipperholme near Halifax who's making a massive difference saving | :12:41. | :12:41.
the lives of birds of prey in India. Johanna Storm runs | :12:42. | :12:46.
an exotic bird and reptile clinic in West Yorkshire and has been filmed | :12:47. | :12:49.
doing her work overseas for a new She's part of a team working for the | :12:50. | :12:53.
charity Wildlife Vets International, and I'm pleased to say she's with | :12:54. | :12:59.
us in the studio now. First let's have a quick look | :13:00. | :13:02.
at the programme. Every single one of these tables has | :13:03. | :13:18.
a bird being operated on. These baskets are the patients waiting for | :13:19. | :13:22.
surgery. I've never seen the scale of this sort of operation before. | :13:23. | :13:25.
It's amazing what they are doing with all of these volunteers, and | :13:26. | :13:29.
yet they are still not keeping up with the number of birds coming in. | :13:30. | :13:35.
There we see a bit of the programme. Thank you for joining us. You can | :13:36. | :13:40.
see how busy the surgery was, and this will coincide with the kite | :13:41. | :13:44.
festival in India. Tell us about the festival and why it is bad for | :13:45. | :13:50.
birds. It falls around the 14th of January and it is one of the most | :13:51. | :13:54.
important festivals in the Hindu calendar. And it signals the end of | :13:55. | :14:00.
winter and the coming of spring, so the winds come up and people fly | :14:01. | :14:04.
traditional kites in a competitive way. And they cover it with a glass | :14:05. | :14:19.
and it is like cheese wire. So that is really bad for the birds? Their | :14:20. | :14:23.
mortality rate has been really bad. But you have done something about | :14:24. | :14:28.
it. What have you done? I basically go and prepare the birds who broken. | :14:29. | :14:39.
The charity organises with other NGOs the transport of injured birds | :14:40. | :14:43.
to their camps, and there they go and get weighed, registered and a | :14:44. | :14:48.
clean sock over their heads so they are not stressed. They have a tag | :14:49. | :14:53.
with a number and get put into a basket and we try to assess which | :14:54. | :14:57.
one is worse injured and operate on those first. We can see some of the | :14:58. | :15:04.
operations taking place. That is the reception. Is some of your work in | :15:05. | :15:09.
educating locals as well is helping the birds? Yes, a lot of it. Last | :15:10. | :15:18.
year, I instituted that we give sale I'm solution under the skin of the | :15:19. | :15:21.
birds and we experience fewer losses. `` say line solution. Is | :15:22. | :15:30.
there much call for your work in West Yorkshire? Yes, people come | :15:31. | :15:37.
from four, five, six hours away. What is the most exotic animal you | :15:38. | :15:47.
have treated? Probably... A McCall. Not many of those. An endangered | :15:48. | :15:56.
birds. I work for an international veterinary group and we have created | :15:57. | :16:00.
Wildlife Vets International, which is a charity which basically tries | :16:01. | :16:06.
to get the experienced, exotic vets and conservation experience into our | :16:07. | :16:13.
projects. We do not employ vets but we get the really good effects and | :16:14. | :16:17.
send them where they are needed. Thank you so much for telling us | :16:18. | :16:19.
your story. And you can see Operation Wild | :16:20. | :16:22.
tonight on BBC Two at 9pm. I will be watching that before the | :16:23. | :16:27.
late shift! Onto sport, | :16:28. | :16:31.
and Billy Sharp is returning to The 28`year`old striker, | :16:32. | :16:33.
who was born in Sheffield, scored 45 goals for Doncaster | :16:34. | :16:36.
in three spells at the club. He played in this game just days | :16:37. | :16:39.
after the death of his son. Sharp has joined Leeds | :16:40. | :16:42.
from Southampton for an undisclosed 45 goals, you scored! Pretty | :16:43. | :16:44.
amazing! Now, if ever a football team | :16:45. | :16:54.
needed a win to lift spirits it On Saturday, they were booed | :16:55. | :16:57.
off the pitch after taking Later the same day they parted | :16:58. | :17:01.

fortune turned in their favour. With that and the best | :17:05. | :17:09.
of the Capital One Cup action, When Ollie Banks scored a | :17:10. | :17:25.
spectacular goal to put Chesterfield 2`0 in front, more storm clouds | :17:26. | :17:27.
seemed to gather around Huddersfield. This header gave hope | :17:28. | :17:33.
but that was soon cancelled out when Gary Robson 's tour open his former | :17:34. | :17:37.
team and Owen Doyle restored their advantage. Then a change of | :17:38. | :17:43.
fortune. Wells scored from the spot before a tame`looking shocked in | :17:44. | :17:48.
injury time somehow found its way through the keeper. They didn't let | :17:49. | :17:54.
go of the bone they had been thrown. In extra time, Wells completed his | :17:55. | :18:03.
hat`trick, as Huddersfield won 5`3. They went on and played some great | :18:04. | :18:07.
football. Fantastic result for us and we needed that as a club. | :18:08. | :18:12.
Doncaster Rovers also made progress in the Capital One Cup. It took | :18:13. | :18:18.
until injury time to get past York City but this was worth the wait. | :18:19. | :18:22.
Sheffield Wednesday's promising start to the season continued. This | :18:23. | :18:29.
sweet finish was soon followed by the first Wednesday goal since | :18:30. | :18:32.
coming out of prison for assault for this player. The 3`0 win was | :18:33. | :18:42.
completed over Notts County. Leeds edged past Accrington 2`1. But | :18:43. | :18:47.
this one the only new signing to leave his mark. This kicks could | :18:48. | :18:59.
lead to a lengthy ban. The prize for City last time was a Wembley final. | :19:00. | :19:05.
So far, so good this season. This got them past Morecambe and into the | :19:06. | :19:08.
second round. Rotherham did it the hard way with | :19:09. | :19:13.
an extra time penalty. New man Matt Derbyshire with a finish. And | :19:14. | :19:18.
finally, Barnsley wasted what few chances they had as they went down | :19:19. | :19:20.
2`0 at home to Crewe. In cricket, Yorkshire made | :19:21. | :19:26.
short work of their latest Ritchie Pyrah took three wickets | :19:27. | :19:28.

of their one`day table. Boxing now, and the undefeated Kell | :19:39. | :19:43.
Brook is gearing up for his chance at winning a world title this | :19:44. | :19:47.
weekend in the city of Los Angeles. Not a bad place to be going | :19:48. | :19:52.
for a title. Previous opportunities slipped away | :19:53. | :19:55.
due to injuries suffered by him and his opponents, | :19:56. | :19:58.
but this weekend the Sheffield fighter will enter the ring to face | :19:59. | :20:01.
IBF world champion Shawn Porter. Our man Shamir Masri is also out | :20:02. | :20:05.

Sheffield says he is in the shape of his life for the biggest night of | :20:28. | :20:31.
his career. This weekend, key has the chance to own the respect of the | :20:32. | :20:37.
boxing world by winning the IBF title. `` he house. I've got a job | :20:38. | :20:42.

it comes to finite, it is me and Shawn Porter. That is all that will | :20:49. | :20:55.
count. `` fight night. Nothing has been left to chance. With Kell | :20:56. | :21:00.
Brooks in LA is scientist and sport performance physiologist Adam from | :21:01. | :21:08.
Sheffield Hallam University. He is overseeing his final preparations. | :21:09. | :21:11.
This is a very confident training camp but the trainer has been here | :21:12. | :21:15.
before with other boxers from the gym. So what does he think of his | :21:16. | :21:23.
chances? Really the only one since he did we get the impression he was | :21:24. | :21:26.
going to make it all the way through to the top was Kell Brooks. You just | :21:27. | :21:35.
knew he had what it took. Here in sun`drenched California, life for | :21:36. | :21:39.
some has a relaxed pace. But that won't be the case for Kell Brooks | :21:40. | :21:46.
come fight night. I am a few days away, injury`free. Healthy in body | :21:47. | :21:52.
and mind, everything. I have itchy knuckles and I am raring to go! A | :21:53. | :21:57.
final press conference takes place tomorrow with a weigh in on Friday | :21:58. | :22:00.
ahead of the Saturday night showdown. | :22:01. | :22:06.
Ooh! Doesn't that look nice! I thought we were going to see the | :22:07. | :22:11.
beach for a second! We will have more later in the week. | :22:12. | :22:18.
But we must move on. 11 years ago, Mike Newman set a new land speed | :22:19. | :22:24.
record of 144 miles an hour. Today, he is back with the aim of reaching | :22:25. | :22:31.
200 mph. Charlotte was there for this new world record attempt. | :22:32. | :22:36.
Mike Newman has a tasteful speed. Blind from birth, you could not | :22:37. | :22:39.
fulfil his dream of being a racing driver, so he went for the next best | :22:40. | :22:45.
thing ` breaking world records. `` we could not fulfil. He broke the | :22:46. | :22:50.
record books previously by reaching 144 miles an hour. Today, he has a | :22:51. | :22:54.
new ambition. To smash through the 200 mile an hour barrier. Very | :22:55. | :23:02.
exciting. A real sense of anticipation. He has a navigator, | :23:03. | :23:07.
who just happens to be his dad Michael. It is my job to tell him | :23:08. | :23:11.
which way to go. Left, right, keep it straight. The important moment is | :23:12. | :23:16.
when to stop! It is nerve wracking for you? Yes, but we must stay | :23:17. | :23:23.
focused. Focusing on the job we have to do. It is since 2003 Mike has | :23:24. | :23:29.
wanted to break the barrier. Can he do it? He finally has the car which | :23:30. | :23:34.
is capable. It is just a few minutes to he sets off. Let's find out. | :23:35. | :23:46.
So, after the exhilaration and excitement, it is time for the | :23:47. | :24:14.
horrible part. Waiting to see if he has done it. Then the results came | :24:15. | :24:19.
in. Mike had averaged 200.9 miles an hour. | :24:20. | :24:20.
APPLAUSE I am feeling absolutely ecstatic. It | :24:21. | :24:33.
has still not sunk in. I have been chasing this dream for 11 years. And | :24:34. | :24:38.
it was on this day 11 years ago I got my first car, of course, so it | :24:39. | :24:43.
is a great anniversary present! Not bad for a former bank manager! His | :24:44. | :24:49.
next challenge is to break the blind open water speed record. With his | :24:50. | :24:54.
record, there is no doubt he will make history again. | :24:55. | :24:59.
200 miles an hour! That is terrifying! Brilliant! Wheel so want | :25:00. | :25:08.
to say congratulations to one of our local breweries. `` we also want to | :25:09. | :25:12.
say. I just want to point out that the cameraman gave it to me like | :25:13. | :25:19.
this. Somebody has been drinking! I bet you are more of a gin and tonic | :25:20. | :25:24.
girl. I do like a beer with a curry! That is nice! That can be described | :25:25. | :25:30.
as a full flavoured classic. I would agree with that. It won a | :25:31. | :25:36.
competition above a lot of other ales to be named Best Ale. Over to | :25:37. | :25:44.
another girl who likes to prop up the bar with her hand! Classy, isn't | :25:45. | :25:53.
she thank you! I have a few photographs | :25:54. | :25:59.
to show you. You can keep your pictures coming | :26:00. | :26:15.
in. This is the address. Tomorrow will be another mixture of sunshine | :26:16. | :26:19.
and showers, some of them later in the day being heavy. Some thundery | :26:20. | :26:23.
showers late in the day tomorrow. Still the risk of them in the East | :26:24. | :26:27.
on Friday and then as we move into Saturday, it is not looking too bad, | :26:28. | :26:32.
but Sunday becomes cooler and more unsettled once again. So far today, | :26:33. | :26:36.
there has been a scattering of showers will stop they have | :26:37. | :26:39.
gradually died away through the afternoon. Sunshine and showers is | :26:40. | :26:44.
the forecast today. I cannot concentrate because there is so much | :26:45. | :26:49.
drinking beer going on! Sunshine and showers to end the day and then | :26:50. | :26:53.
overnight tonight, dry with clear spells. Temperatures back to 11 or | :26:54. | :27:00.
12. That is 54 Fahrenheit. The sunrise in the morning is at 5:42am. | :27:01. | :27:10.
These are the high water times. Plenty of sunshine and broken cloud | :27:11. | :27:14.
tomorrow morning but as we go through the day, more cloud was up | :27:15. | :27:17.
and then come the afternoon, the risk of showers. `` more cloud | :27:18. | :27:27.
bubbles up. Those showers could be thundery in the afternoon. | :27:28. | :27:30.
Temperatures getting up to 18 or 19, so cooler than we have been used | :27:31. | :27:36.
to. Quite breezy and heavy showers to come on Friday. Look at you! You | :27:37. | :27:45.
mistake treat there! I am a cheap date! Eiffel got to mention! Will | :27:46. | :27:48.
you come | :27:49. | :27:49. |
