Good evening you're watching Wednesday's Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Keep politics out of Bradford ` community leaders unite to condemn | :00:00. | :00:08.
George Galloway and the Israeli ambassador | :00:09. | :00:10.
Our big concern now is Bradford is becoming a PR war zone | :00:11. | :00:16.
That is something we must, at all costs, avoid. | :00:17. | :00:23.
We'll ask the deputy ambassador to Israel why he came to Bradford. | :00:24. | :00:27.
More apprenticeships for Yorkshire's young people, but concerns that more | :00:28. | :00:31.
than half the businesses who signed trainees up are now dropping out. | :00:32. | :00:35.
Future gain from our industrial past as three Yorkshire landmarks make it | :00:36. | :00:38.
We've had a lot of bite awareness about today. I will be back later | :00:39. | :00:52.
with all the news for tomorrow. But first tonight to claims that | :00:53. | :01:00.
a Bradford MP and a senior Israeli diplomat are deliberately provoking | :01:01. | :01:03.
tension in the city. George Galloway was last night | :01:04. | :01:07.
questioned under caution by West Yorkshire Police over a speech | :01:08. | :01:10.
in which he said Bradford had been In response, the Embassy of Israel | :01:11. | :01:13.
posted pictures on Twitter of their Ambassador waving the Israeli flag | :01:14. | :01:21.
beside a 'Welcome to Bradford' sign. Community leaders have condemned | :01:22. | :01:24.
both for their actions. They can be no doubting the strong | :01:25. | :01:46.
feelings. Recent pro`Palestinian demonstrations in the city have been | :01:47. | :01:51.
peaceful and supported by many from different religions. But then George | :01:52. | :01:57.
Galloway made these comments. We have declared Bradford and Israel | :01:58. | :02:04.
free zone. He has now been interviewed by police under caution. | :02:05. | :02:08.
This week the Israeli ambassador to Bradford. | :02:09. | :02:12.
He has been criticised the treating these pictures of his visit. My big | :02:13. | :02:25.
concern is now Bradford is becoming a PR war zone. We need to be careful | :02:26. | :02:30.
of how people use this conflict in order to gain what their political | :02:31. | :02:35.
agenda is. I am absolutely confident that the people of Bradford can | :02:36. | :02:40.
rationalise that. It is a message that is supported by Bradford | :02:41. | :02:46.
Council. If these diplomats and politicians want to have these | :02:47. | :02:50.
debates and arguments about the international situation in Gaza, | :02:51. | :02:57.
which are of great concern to everybody, they should find | :02:58. | :02:59.
somewhere else to do it and not in Bradford. This is Bradford's only | :03:00. | :03:07.
synagogue. It was in threat of closure. But the communities came | :03:08. | :03:10.
together to save it. Now this bridge building is as simple all of | :03:11. | :03:17.
Bradford as a multi`faith city. And the bond between the religions is | :03:18. | :03:22.
clearly a strong one. I'd say the relationships are very good. We meet | :03:23. | :03:27.
together, we talk together and this doesn't do any help anyone. More | :03:28. | :03:33.
protests are inevitable now Middle East peace talks collapsed but | :03:34. | :03:39.
community leaders say they won't let elliptical rows caused tensions in | :03:40. | :03:40.
this city. Well earlier I spoke to | :03:41. | :03:42.
Deputy Ambassador Aytan Naeh, who's been in Yorkshire today, and I | :03:43. | :03:46.
began by asking him for his reaction I think the benchmark | :03:47. | :03:49.
for every statement or behaviour should be to help to bring | :03:50. | :03:57.
the two sides together. I think that's what people | :03:58. | :04:00.
need to ask themselves. Whether he broke the law here | :04:01. | :04:11.
is not for me to answer. There is concern that the ambassador | :04:12. | :04:14.
of Israel coming to Bradford this week, he acted provocatively by | :04:15. | :04:18.
waving the Israeli flag in the city. I think the ambassador has come to | :04:19. | :04:21.
show sympathy, to show understanding with the people of Bradford, | :04:22. | :04:30.
with the Jewish community in Bradford as we do in many such | :04:31. | :04:35.
visits of myself, the ambassador and I think we also come to listen, | :04:36. | :04:40.
not just to preach. There are concerns from community | :04:41. | :04:47.
and faith leaders that by the ambassador coming here and doing | :04:48. | :04:51.
what he did, by George Galloway saying what he said, that both sides | :04:52. | :04:55.
are actually breaking down really First of all I wouldn't put | :04:56. | :05:00.
the ambassador and that particular I think the ambassador, | :05:01. | :05:07.
unlike the MP, Did he not try to get a reaction | :05:08. | :05:13.
by doing what he did? What he got was a reaction from | :05:14. | :05:19.
community leaders that he met in They said the statements that were | :05:20. | :05:27.
aired were not representing On the contrary, | :05:28. | :05:34.
that they tried to build bridges and the ambassador encouraged them | :05:35. | :05:39.
to build these bridges. I think it is important that the | :05:40. | :05:41.
ambassador and any other diplomatic comes and shows their understanding | :05:42. | :05:45.
and support for community relation building rather than | :05:46. | :05:51.
for community relation breakup. People | :05:52. | :05:56.
of Yorkshire feel very strongly We come here to explain | :05:57. | :05:58.
our position. I think that we are tasked with | :05:59. | :06:09.
explaining the positions of the Israeli citizens who are | :06:10. | :06:13.
under fire as we speak. More than 5 million who are dashing | :06:14. | :06:17.
to the shelters and safe rooms What people see on TV screens | :06:18. | :06:20.
sometimes is a mere 90 seconds of a frozen reality that does not reflect | :06:21. | :06:31.
the depth and the measure of danger I think it is our job to come | :06:32. | :06:34.
and explain it. I think what we hear is 2,000 people | :06:35. | :06:44.
killed in Gaza, including women and children, and that is what people | :06:45. | :06:49.
are really quite upset about. None | :06:50. | :06:54.
of us really wanted this conflict. Another problem is that Hamas has | :06:55. | :06:59.
embedded itself within Hamas shooting from hundreds | :07:00. | :07:04.
of civilian locations, kindergartens, mosques, graveyards, | :07:05. | :07:14.
schools and other facilities We target terrorists | :07:15. | :07:19.
and terrorist facilities. We target their infrastructure, | :07:20. | :07:33.
the tunnels that are aimed at being To restore security | :07:34. | :07:38.
for the people of Israel. Later on Look North, the best of | :07:39. | :07:58.
last night's football action plus... It is the first day of the annual | :07:59. | :08:11.
horse racing meeting here in Europe. Fashion, glamour and even a bit of | :08:12. | :08:13.
horse racing. Campaigners who are marching | :08:14. | :08:15.
from the North East to London to protest against what they claim is | :08:16. | :08:19.
the "privatisation" of the NHS are The event has been organised | :08:20. | :08:22.
by a group of women from Darlington who are following the route taken | :08:23. | :08:26.
by the Jarrow March against poverty and unemployment | :08:27. | :08:28.
more than seventy years ago. What we are upset about is what | :08:29. | :08:33.
we've taken for granted for many years, which is on our doorstep, | :08:34. | :08:37.
is slowly being taken away from us. We are groups of mums and we | :08:38. | :08:40.
don't want our kids in the future A 16 year`old boy is being treated | :08:41. | :08:46.
in hospital after a disturbance in the Page Hall area of Sheffield | :08:47. | :08:51.
last night. The teenager suffered minor puncture | :08:52. | :08:53.
marks during No one's been arrested | :08:54. | :08:56.
in connection with the assault. One man was arrested on suspicion | :08:57. | :09:01.
of a public order offence. Work has started | :09:02. | :09:06.
on a new ?10 million Olympic legacy The Concord Leisure Centre will be | :09:07. | :09:09.
developed as a National Centre The idea is to help treat chronic | :09:10. | :09:14.
health conditions The leisure centre already takes | :09:15. | :09:20.
part in a GP scheme for people with illness, with over a | :09:21. | :09:25.
thousand people in the city having Two other sites in the city are | :09:26. | :09:28.
also going to be developed. Now the business secretary | :09:29. | :09:33.
Vince Cable has been in Yorkshire today to announce the expansion | :09:34. | :09:36.
of his scheme to get more young Last year there were nearly 60,000 | :09:37. | :09:39.
apprenticeships started That's nearly three times as many | :09:40. | :09:44.
as a decade ago and more than 55% of those were in a | :09:45. | :09:49.
few business sectors ` healthcare, More so than in more traditional | :09:50. | :09:53.
areas like manufacturing. But Look North has learned that more | :09:54. | :09:57.
than half of small and medium sized companies involved in taking on | :09:58. | :10:00.
apprentices have now dropped out. From the North Sea to China, these | :10:01. | :10:14.
components are everything from wind turbines to the coal industry will | :10:15. | :10:16.
soon be shipped around the world. Made in Leeds with the help of | :10:17. | :10:21.
apprentices. Here they say business has been dead but if they don't get | :10:22. | :10:26.
in fresh blood, things could soon turn. What I call a soon armour. | :10:27. | :10:34.
People at the latter end of their working career need to be replaced. | :10:35. | :10:41.
We also need to bring in new talent. The solution from Vince Cable was | :10:42. | :10:50.
the trailblazer apprentice game. Apprenticeships designed by industry | :10:51. | :10:54.
making them more credible and attractive. We think of apprentices | :10:55. | :11:02.
as an alternative. The merits are there is a job and work experience, | :11:03. | :11:07.
at the same time you are acquiring a training and an education. Some of | :11:08. | :11:11.
the people I have met here are doing actual as a master 's degrees on the | :11:12. | :11:16.
back of their apprenticeships. I get the joy of designing new products | :11:17. | :11:20.
that people see on the shelves at supermarkets. I also get to go on to | :11:21. | :11:29.
further education. I had different opportunities once I did my A`levels | :11:30. | :11:34.
and have been an apprentice is the best way to get into work. While | :11:35. | :11:38.
most people are being positive about the plans there are concerns small | :11:39. | :11:42.
businesses can't afford to take part. We have learned one scheme has | :11:43. | :11:46.
lost all of its regular small business involvement. That is partly | :11:47. | :11:50.
down to us in government making things less bureaucratic but it's | :11:51. | :11:55.
also persuading the companies that it is worth doing. It is because | :11:56. | :12:00.
they get real economic benefit. Benefit for the company, the | :12:01. | :12:04.
apprentice and in the long run the Yorkshire economy. | :12:05. | :12:07.
Meanwhile, a scheme which uses football as a way | :12:08. | :12:09.
of helping young people who're not in apprenticeships or education to | :12:10. | :12:12.
Street League is aimed at 16 to 25`year`olds who need some | :12:13. | :12:17.
inspiration to take the first steps towards getting a job. | :12:18. | :12:20.
Matt Slater's been to find out how it all works. | :12:21. | :12:25.
What I want you to do on these boards is have | :12:26. | :12:27.
a little think about what you think is the true spirit of the game. | :12:28. | :12:32.
Forget the Premier League for a moment. | :12:33. | :12:34.
Football, when you strip out the headlines, histrionics and hype, | :12:35. | :12:37.
But sometimes a good game is what people need more than anything else. | :12:38. | :12:42.
From the back four to the front two, a team is more than just long | :12:43. | :13:00.
Football can make millionaires of men like Liverpool and England | :13:01. | :13:06.
It can also reach people who have been left behind. | :13:07. | :13:11.
People not on a career path, property ladder or graduate scheme. | :13:12. | :13:17.
We've been hearing a lot about the improving economy and the | :13:18. | :13:20.
fact that unemployment is falling, but that doesn't tell them. | :13:21. | :13:22.
What the experts refer to as structured unemployment isn't | :13:23. | :13:25.
There are a quarter of a million young people in this country who | :13:26. | :13:30.
haven't been in a job or some kind of training for more than a year. | :13:31. | :13:33.
Those are the people that Street League is trying to reach. | :13:34. | :13:37.
We use football as an engagement tool to get 16 to | :13:38. | :13:41.
25`year`olds to come along and play football with us once a week. | :13:42. | :13:44.
No charge to them and then they get an opportunity to apply to | :13:45. | :13:47.
They spend two hours in the afternoon playing football | :13:48. | :13:52.
and in the morning we spend two hours working with them | :13:53. | :13:54.
on employability skills, working on their CV, interview practice, | :13:55. | :13:57.
teamwork, communication skills, all the things that employers want. | :13:58. | :14:01.
I've got three jobs now, believe it or not. | :14:02. | :14:03.
I am working in high school and I referee for Power League. | :14:04. | :14:10.
Another success story for a programme with an 80% hit rate. | :14:11. | :14:19.
These guys came through the scheme in Manchester, but with branches | :14:20. | :14:23.
opening in Leeds and Sheffield before Christmas, Street League is | :14:24. | :14:26.
All to play for in the first all`Yorkshire rugby league Challenge | :14:27. | :14:42.
The three Yorkshire museums on a European heritage trail | :14:43. | :14:50.
Every single one of our teams was on the field last night, for the first | :14:51. | :15:02.
And not all the results went our way, I'm afraid. | :15:03. | :15:06.
But on the plus side Bradford City remain unbeaten after a great win | :15:07. | :15:09.
And the Blades and the Terriers are both off the mark at last. | :15:10. | :15:14.
With the best of the action, here's Paul Ogden. | :15:15. | :15:23.
Are the sweet celebration of that will first win of the season. In the | :15:24. | :15:34.
short term, Academy head will be happy to keep supervising in his own | :15:35. | :15:40.
wily way. His careful, inventive selection outfoxed Reading last | :15:41. | :15:46.
night. The goals doubled have changed the whole mood around town | :15:47. | :15:52.
today. Rotherham United staged a first`time champion ship defeat. | :15:53. | :15:59.
Likewise lead United disappointed their home fans. Sheffield Wednesday | :16:00. | :16:05.
might feel as if they had last having led onto a 1`nil lead until | :16:06. | :16:12.
with 20 seconds left Millwall grabbed an equaliser and it finished | :16:13. | :16:17.
one all. In League 1 Sheffield United are off the mark with a 2`1 | :16:18. | :16:19.
win. While Chesterfield lost at home to | :16:20. | :16:43.
MK dons, Doncaster Rovers left it until the 92nd minute to secure a | :16:44. | :16:49.
draw. All square at the York city. From two nil down to two to. | :16:50. | :16:58.
Now it's just three days to the rugby league showdown between | :16:59. | :17:02.
Castleford Tigers and Leeds Rhinos who're at Wembley on Saturday for | :17:03. | :17:06.
the first all`Yorkshire Challenge Cup Final in nearly 20 years. | :17:07. | :17:11.
They're competing for this amazing piece of silverware | :17:12. | :17:14.
and joining us in the studio are two men whose nerves quite possibly are | :17:15. | :17:19.
Castleford to get there is an incredible story. Nobody really | :17:20. | :17:40.
fancied their chances at all. No. It we've been doing really well. All | :17:41. | :17:46.
the boys are looking forward to Saturday. How do you feel having | :17:47. | :17:53.
played for the rhinos as well. Do you know them well enough to use the | :17:54. | :18:02.
information? I have always checked but it changes every now and then. | :18:03. | :18:04.
I'm just looking forward to Saturday. Leeds have lost six cup | :18:05. | :18:12.
finals since they last won. What would it mean to raise the Trophy on | :18:13. | :18:18.
Saturday? It would be special. It is such a great trophy and a great | :18:19. | :18:25.
competition. We've got a good challenge cup record we've just not | :18:26. | :18:28.
been able to play well in the final. That is something we will try to put | :18:29. | :18:32.
right on Saturday. It's going to be a tough game. Obviously a lot of | :18:33. | :18:38.
pressure. How do you get yourself into the zone to prepare for it? It | :18:39. | :18:44.
is different. They say try and treat it like a normal game but it's not. | :18:45. | :18:50.
There is a lot more riding on it. You need to perform at your best. | :18:51. | :18:55.
Everything this weekend is just holding up to peak on Saturday. I'm | :18:56. | :19:00.
sure they are doing the same as us. I hurt Castleford will be closed on | :19:01. | :19:04.
Saturday. Everybody's going to Wembley. Do you have the move of | :19:05. | :19:11.
anticipation there? Yes. All the fans are looking forward to Saturday | :19:12. | :19:15.
and I think there are a few bus`loads going down. The amazing | :19:16. | :19:21.
thing about the game is you can't predict it. You might say you have | :19:22. | :19:25.
more experience about going to Wembley but you are so even as teams | :19:26. | :19:30.
aren't you? Yes both games have been very close. I think the bookies are | :19:31. | :19:37.
making us favourites but there has not been much in the games and it's | :19:38. | :19:43.
going to be another tight one. One thing is sure, one of you will be | :19:44. | :19:46.
taking this home on Saturday. Best of luck to both sides. | :19:47. | :19:50.
Paralympic and World Champion Hannah Cockcroft | :19:51. | :19:51.
from Halifax has added European gold to her medal collection. | :19:52. | :19:54.
She was victorious in the T34 100 metres at the IPC Championships | :19:55. | :19:57.
She finished in 18.55 seconds just ahead of Holland's Amy Symons, | :19:58. | :20:02.
with fellow Britain Melissa Nicholls winning bronze. | :20:03. | :20:10.
Now to one of Yorkshire's oldest, richest | :20:11. | :20:13.
The Ebor Festival is taking place at York Racecourse | :20:14. | :20:19.
There's a prize every day for the best dressed racegoer. | :20:20. | :20:36.
So we sent our ` erm ` best dressed reporter Danny | :20:37. | :20:39.
There are heroes, there are frocks and there are hats, hats, hats. It | :20:40. | :21:00.
is all about seeing and being seen. In the parade ring, the well groomed | :21:01. | :21:03.
and the well groomed and the well`heeled show in the champagne | :21:04. | :21:08.
bar the well groomed and a high`heeled just show off. Of | :21:09. | :21:11.
course, there are also those who come to the racing. Just over five | :21:12. | :21:18.
months old. What do you think they'll be when they grow up? By | :21:19. | :21:23.
their dad is a bookmaker. They're not going to be bookmakers. The big | :21:24. | :21:32.
race draws a big crowd. This is the richest race ever staged at York. | :21:33. | :21:37.
?800,000 in prize money won in under three minutes. That's the kind of | :21:38. | :21:41.
hourly pay rate you would really want. Less rich but more nutritious, | :21:42. | :21:47.
the sculpture in Yorkshire badge has become something of a tradition. | :21:48. | :21:54.
Would you eat it? Because I would. I'd had few nibbles along the way. | :21:55. | :21:59.
Yes I can about share for the produce. It's really tasty. The | :22:00. | :22:03.
occasion would be complete without the sound of breasts to accompany | :22:04. | :22:07.
the people as they part with them money. | :22:08. | :22:14.
Ladies Day is actually tomorrow. So expect more, much more of the same. | :22:15. | :22:23.
Finally tonight, we've got a proud tradition of industrial heritage in | :22:24. | :22:26.
You name it, we've probably built it, made it, | :22:27. | :22:29.
And this isn't a humble boast either. | :22:30. | :22:34.
Three of our big museums have been officially | :22:35. | :22:36.
recognised as anchor points on a European industrial heritage | :22:37. | :22:38.
And we know just the person to take you for a tour ` | :22:39. | :22:42.
In ship heeled's Chris opposing cradles, the modern city was forged. | :22:43. | :22:58.
But it's not the sound of hammers ringing around the island today. | :22:59. | :23:04.
Today it is something of a special occasion. It has been recognised as | :23:05. | :23:10.
part of a European heritage route. To celebrate we are taking this | :23:11. | :23:18.
marvellous car out for a spin. This is one of the museum's star | :23:19. | :23:23.
exhibits. Marvellous. Ideal for a road trip on a new European heritage | :23:24. | :23:30.
trail with the theme of makers, miners and money. The story links | :23:31. | :23:42.
all these different sites. Let's go and look at different museums. It is | :23:43. | :23:46.
all a story of the industrial nation. It will help button. | :23:47. | :23:58.
What this car lacks in speed it makes for in photogenic value. | :23:59. | :24:13.
While we were here, there is one more thing I would like to show you. | :24:14. | :24:19.
It's the reason this site is really special. For once, it isn't a | :24:20. | :24:26.
railway locomotive. It is a steam engine though. I can't believe I'm | :24:27. | :24:32.
looking at this for the first time. Tell me why it is so famous? This is | :24:33. | :24:37.
the invention that allow the industrial regulation to happen. It | :24:38. | :24:45.
is the last one anywhere in the world. This is the Stonehenge of the | :24:46. | :24:51.
industrial revolution isn't it? It is. Why wait until the rebuild is | :24:52. | :25:00.
complete. There is an open day here tomorrow. No matter how you travel | :25:01. | :25:05.
all three museums are worth a visit. They are our story and one that will | :25:06. | :25:20.
be told across the continent. How is the weather going to be? Temperature | :25:21. | :25:29.
is disappointing but the weekend doesn't look too bad. | :25:30. | :25:34.
Let's have a look at some photographs first. | :25:35. | :25:52.
There have been a few showers about today but there has also been some | :25:53. | :25:59.
sunny spells. Tomorrow, there will be more cloud about and that will | :26:00. | :26:03.
produce a few showers. It is going to be quite chilly out there. Today | :26:04. | :26:10.
out of the sun it felt quite chilly. The wind is coming down from the | :26:11. | :26:15.
Arctic. A very chilly field to things over the next few days. | :26:16. | :26:18.
Lightening up for Friday were just a few showers in the East. On Saturday | :26:19. | :26:24.
generally fine. Bank holiday Monday doesn't look good at all. So, broken | :26:25. | :26:30.
cloud and sunny spells has been the order for this afternoon. A dry | :26:31. | :26:36.
evening with clear spells. A lot more cloud around during the second | :26:37. | :26:40.
half of the night. We will start to see some showery rain towards the | :26:41. | :26:44.
end of the night. The lowest temperatures will be this evening | :26:45. | :26:48.
where we have those clear spells. Dropping to single figures. | :26:49. | :26:53.
Tomorrow, a lot more cloud around compared with today. We will see a | :26:54. | :27:13.
lot more cloud and showery bursts of rain the further north and west you | :27:14. | :27:20.
are. It will feel quite cool with a moderate south`west breeze. | :27:21. | :27:24.
Temperature is disappointing for the time of year. Chilly feel to thing | :27:25. | :27:35.
and an improvement for Friday. We will be back with an updated APM and | :27:36. | :27:39.
I will be back with the late news at 10:25pm. | :27:40. | :28:15.
We've got factory boys and butchers' apprentices and office clerks | :28:16. | :28:19. |
