of Ashya King are in a Spanish jail tonight fighting extradition to | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Britain after they took from a former hostel worker that | :00:00. | :00:20.
claims about the abuse were dismissed. | :00:21. | :00:23.
Whenever we raised the issue of sexual exploitation we were | :00:24. | :00:28.
considered to be alarmist. We will also hear that, Dick story | :00:29. | :00:32.
of the mother of one of the victims. Also call on I am in Huddersfield | :00:33. | :00:41.
where many have turned out to the attributed to a schoolboy swept out | :00:42. | :00:48.
to sea well in holiday on wheels. And a new treatment for one of the | :00:49. | :00:52.
most common causes of sight loss. And don't forget to join me for that | :00:53. | :00:55.
all`important forecast coming up shortly. | :00:56. | :01:03.
First tonight, more dramatic revelations involving | :01:04. | :01:05.
The BBC's Panorama programme is to broadcast its investigation | :01:06. | :01:11.
into the scandal which saw 1400 vulnerable girls abused. | :01:12. | :01:16.
The programme has obtained further allegations that claims that abuse | :01:17. | :01:19.
Rotherham has dominated the headlines now for almost a week. | :01:20. | :02:20.
Because they did know lots about the girls. | :02:21. | :02:23.
That's what you find so freaky because they seem to know about the | :02:24. | :03:22.
there wasn't actually a problem in Rotherham at that time of any kind. | :03:23. | :03:26.
And whenever we raised the issue of sexual exploitation, | :03:27. | :03:29.
we were considered to be unprofessional and alarmist. | :03:30. | :03:32.
And for the victim's families the failure of the police and the | :03:33. | :03:35.
I fear they all sat back and watched, to use us as | :03:36. | :03:44.
I can't explain it properly but they knew what was happening. | :03:45. | :03:49.
Why didn't they do certain stuff to stop it? | :03:50. | :03:56.
Well, Emma joins us in the studio now. | :03:57. | :03:58.
What else can you tell us about what will be in tonight's programme? | :03:59. | :04:06.
I have been talking to the panorama team and it is all about | :04:07. | :04:14.
opportunities that were missed and warnings that allegations were | :04:15. | :04:17.
ignored. We will be hearing from a doctor who was a drugs analyst | :04:18. | :04:23.
working for South Yorkshire Police. Right back in 2003, during the | :04:24. | :04:27.
course of her research, she quickly established a connection between | :04:28. | :04:31.
drugs in Rotherham and child sexual exploitation. This is what she had | :04:32. | :04:37.
to say. It really didn't make any sense as | :04:38. | :04:43.
to why they're aware major police operation is `` why they weren't | :04:44. | :04:52.
police operations to investigate it. There were issues of ethnicity and | :04:53. | :04:56.
some people felt that was a barrier to investigating. It seemed to be | :04:57. | :05:03.
too sensitive than issue. He mentions 2003 and your first | :05:04. | :05:08.
answer, but we understand there was a warning about child exploitation | :05:09. | :05:13.
before then. Yes, back in 2002, a Home Office | :05:14. | :05:18.
research found the young girls were going to a youth organisation in the | :05:19. | :05:24.
town and stopped about sexual grooming that was happening. This | :05:25. | :05:27.
researcher looked into it some more and produced a report. She give the | :05:28. | :05:31.
report to Rotherham Council and says that rather than act on it, the | :05:32. | :05:36.
council told her not to repair two Asian men when she talked about | :05:37. | :05:44.
sexual exploitation. `` refer to. She says she felt intimidated and | :05:45. | :05:49.
people who she thought would be there to protect young people and | :05:50. | :05:54.
bring their abusers to justice covered their own backs. | :05:55. | :05:55.
Many thanks for that. And you can see the full Panorama | :05:56. | :06:00.
investigation into the child abuse scandal | :06:01. | :06:02.
in Rotherham tonight at 8:30pm We'll also have reaction to that | :06:03. | :06:05.
programme on our late bulletin Next tonight, tributes have been | :06:06. | :06:08.
paid to a 12`year`old boy from Huddersfield who is still | :06:09. | :06:11.
missing after being swept out to sea Isaac Nash was paddling with | :06:12. | :06:14.
his younger brother Xander when they got into difficulties | :06:15. | :06:17.
at Aberffraw in Anglesey on Friday. Xander was rescued | :06:18. | :06:20.
but Isaac has not been seen since. Tonight, a vigil is being held | :06:21. | :06:23.
for him in Huddersfield. Charlotte Leeming is there | :06:24. | :06:26.
for us now. Today, Isaac has been described as | :06:27. | :06:45.
an amazing son, brother and friend. Today, many people gathered here is | :06:46. | :06:49.
a tribute to remember him. Friends and relatives remembered him. They | :06:50. | :06:55.
released balloons into the sky and then there was a spontaneous round | :06:56. | :07:00.
of up laws. It was very moving stuff. It was a way for young people | :07:01. | :07:06.
to show how they were supporting the family, who are still waiting | :07:07. | :07:09.
desperately for news is that search continues. | :07:10. | :07:12.
Isaac Nash hasn't been seen since Friday. He was swept out to sea. He | :07:13. | :07:21.
had been playing with his brother only got into difficulties in the | :07:22. | :07:25.
water. Relatives raised to help. They managed to raise his younger | :07:26. | :07:32.
son but the father could not save Isaac. They have scoured the coast | :07:33. | :07:38.
looking for him. We have got police and coastguard | :07:39. | :07:44.
rescue teams searching the area and helicopters out looking. So far | :07:45. | :07:47.
nothing found. Isaac was due to start at year eight | :07:48. | :07:53.
on Wednesday at school. Counselling is being made available to pupils. | :07:54. | :07:59.
As head teacher says over the past two years, Isaac has proved to be a | :08:00. | :08:04.
very popular boy who loved sport and excelled at maps. | :08:05. | :08:11.
He was a bit of a character. He was very intelligent, very athletic. He | :08:12. | :08:19.
played football, cricket, did athletics. Outside school he did | :08:20. | :08:24.
taekwondo. But he was also very intelligent. He was a very good | :08:25. | :08:32.
mathematician. But he was also creative as well. He was | :08:33. | :08:35.
multitalented. And we are going to miss him deeply. | :08:36. | :08:41.
As have his friends, who have been paying tribute to him on social | :08:42. | :08:48.
media. Many talk about his smile and sense of humour. His mother said he | :08:49. | :08:52.
was a special child and will always be with us. | :08:53. | :08:57.
Just a few moments before that tributes took place, I spoke to a | :08:58. | :09:03.
couple of Isaac's friends. They said it was important to come here | :09:04. | :09:06.
tonight. He was really kind and funny and he | :09:07. | :09:15.
was really sporty. Basically, he was just perfect. Sweet. | :09:16. | :09:25.
You should celebrate what he did because he was a really nice person. | :09:26. | :09:33.
A special assembly will take place tomorrow at the school. They say it | :09:34. | :09:40.
is important to offer counselling to the children. As time goes on and | :09:41. | :09:44.
the family waits for news, it is looking likely that Isaac won't be | :09:45. | :09:50.
starting term with his friends. The family say they are very | :09:51. | :09:55.
appreciative of all the support on social media and the sport from the | :09:56. | :09:56.
community here tonight. It'll be one | :09:57. | :10:03.
of the most important votes in But what will the referendum | :10:04. | :10:06.
on Scottish independence mean A hospital in Sheffield has become | :10:07. | :10:10.
the first place in the UK to offer a new treatment | :10:11. | :10:18.
for people suffering one of the most The Royal Hallamshire is now using | :10:19. | :10:21.
low level X`rays to treat suitable patients with | :10:22. | :10:25.
Age Related Macular Degeneration. The new treatment doesn't offer a | :10:26. | :10:30.
cure but can dramatically reduce the Our health correspondent | :10:31. | :10:33.
Jamie Coulson reports. 83`year`old Derek Jones is losing | :10:34. | :10:53.
the vision in his right eye. He has age related macular degeneration, | :10:54. | :10:56.
which means his central vision is deteriorating while the site around | :10:57. | :11:00.
the periphery remains largely unaffected. | :11:01. | :11:08.
I fear that, unless I can get some improvement, reading is going to be | :11:09. | :11:15.
an impossibility. The macula is a small but vital area | :11:16. | :11:23.
at the back of the eye and is vital for sight. These leak blood or fluid | :11:24. | :11:34.
which leads to scarring and if left untreated can lead to a rapid loss | :11:35. | :11:40.
of central vision. Today, Derek is being given a new | :11:41. | :11:56.
treatment called a riot therapy `` temp | :11:57. | :12:01.
Traditionally, patients would have injections into the eyes and that | :12:02. | :12:13.
can be uncomfortable. But this new therapy can reduce the need for them | :12:14. | :12:17.
by up to 40%. The impact that that his own | :12:18. | :12:22.
patients and the costs to the NHS is most important. | :12:23. | :12:27.
If it is a new thing and other people are going to benefit from it, | :12:28. | :12:32.
that really is good. It is wonderful. | :12:33. | :12:38.
This treatment doesn't offer a cure but does provide a more comfortable | :12:39. | :12:43.
and cost`effective way of treating in major cause of sight loss. | :12:44. | :12:52.
A footballer from Huddersfield has been charged as part of | :12:53. | :12:54.
The former Bolton player Delroy Facey will appear | :12:55. | :12:58.
before magistrates charged with conspiracy to commit bribery. | :12:59. | :12:59.
He was originally arrested last year as part of a national | :13:00. | :13:02.
Services on part of Sheffield's tram network have been suspended after | :13:03. | :13:06.
Blue and Purple routes are currently suspended between the station | :13:07. | :13:10.
Sheffield Supertram say the problem could affect the safety of services. | :13:11. | :13:15.
A coroner in Scarborough has ruled the death of a man | :13:16. | :13:25.
on a level crossing near Malton earlier this year was an accident. | :13:26. | :13:28.
77`year`old Eric Ireland was killed when his car was hit by a train | :13:29. | :13:32.
The inquest heard how no call was made to the signalman before | :13:33. | :13:38.
Mr Ireland began to drive across the line | :13:39. | :13:40.
A man accused of attacking the Bradford West MP George Galloway | :13:41. | :13:48.
Mr Galloway was attacked in London on Friday night and had to spend | :13:49. | :13:54.
39`year`old Neil Masterson appeared in court this afternoon charged with | :13:55. | :13:58.
He'll appear in Crown Court later this month. | :13:59. | :14:06.
It's one of the most important ballots | :14:07. | :14:11.
in the history of the United Kingdom and it's just a couple of weeks away | :14:12. | :14:15.
but not a single person living in Yorkshire will have a vote. | :14:16. | :14:21.
So should we care whether Scotland votes | :14:22. | :14:23.
All this week, Look North will be looking at the issues involved. | :14:24. | :14:27.
Here's our Political Editor Len Tingle. | :14:28. | :14:33.
This is the famous bridge at Coldstream, the Gateway to Scotland | :14:34. | :14:40.
from England. Yorkshire is a good 150 miles that way. At the Scots | :14:41. | :14:45.
ports to turn this into water crossing to a newly independent | :14:46. | :14:49.
country, will it make any difference back in Yorkshire? `` Scots As many | :14:50. | :14:54.
as are of the opinion, say "aye". the idea of border crossings is | :14:55. | :15:08.
nonsense, say some. There is no one in Scotland that | :15:09. | :15:13.
believes we are going to have passport checks and controls. Look | :15:14. | :15:17.
at the situation between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. | :15:18. | :15:22.
There is lots of scaremongering from the no campaign that we will have | :15:23. | :15:26.
border post setup and that is simply not going to happen. | :15:27. | :15:35.
Do you fancy signing our love letter to Scotland. We are saying please | :15:36. | :15:39.
don't go. Dan Snow says it is too important a | :15:40. | :15:43.
decision for just the Scots to decide. He has recently been in | :15:44. | :15:51.
Leeds calling for a No vote. He says independence would create increasing | :15:52. | :15:59.
and damaging uncertainty. We might be fine but we don't know. | :16:00. | :16:05.
Why bring in division and people threatening to default on currency? | :16:06. | :16:12.
It is ridiculous. We are a happy family and have challenges ahead of | :16:13. | :16:15.
us but are better off together. But whatever the outcome of the | :16:16. | :16:19.
referendum, research at Huddersfield University appears to show that the | :16:20. | :16:23.
debate itself is had one major effect on whether Yorkshire people | :16:24. | :16:26.
want more political power of Europe. There is very little demand for | :16:27. | :16:31.
independence in Yorkshire but a strong admiration or like for the | :16:32. | :16:38.
notion of having devolution of power to Yorkshire as an entity. | :16:39. | :16:43.
Consequently, there isn't any great nationalist feeling with a big N but | :16:44. | :16:51.
an idea that there could be more power for Yorkshire. | :16:52. | :16:56.
Hacking Glasgow, both campaigns agree that change has already taken | :16:57. | :17:00.
place under the existing default parliament in Scotland and more | :17:01. | :17:04.
power could come its way at this closely fought referendum results in | :17:05. | :17:08.
a No vote. The vote is on September the 18th | :17:09. | :17:12.
but only one thing is clear so far. Whatever the position of politics | :17:13. | :17:18.
and power will never be the same in Scotland again and possibly | :17:19. | :17:21.
elsewhere as well. Including Yorkshire. | :17:22. | :17:41.
And after a difficult few days, how Leeds United's caretaker boss | :17:42. | :17:45.
A charity in Chesterfield has offered to help the family of | :17:46. | :17:54.
Ashya King, the five`year`old boy who was taken from hospital by his | :17:55. | :17:57.
They are currently being held by police in Spain. | :17:58. | :18:04.
Ashya has brain cancer and his parents say they removed him | :18:05. | :18:07.
from the hospital because they want him to have proton beam therapy. | :18:08. | :18:19.
It costs around ?100,000 and is not available on the NHS | :18:20. | :18:22.
but the charity Kids 'n' Cancer says it will fund the treatment. | :18:23. | :18:25.
His parents say they were not happy with his treatment and wanted proton | :18:26. | :18:42.
beam therapy. The treatment the NHS wouldn't provide. | :18:43. | :18:46.
It is so much better for children with brain cancer. It is in Zenani | :18:47. | :18:50.
area, whereby normal radiation passes right through his head and | :18:51. | :18:57.
comes out the other side. It can be directed at a more | :18:58. | :19:04.
precisely than x`rays. Experts say it causes less damage. The charities | :19:05. | :19:13.
say they will fund the treatment if he is suitable. | :19:14. | :19:21.
What is a child's life worth? It is more than money. This is horrendous | :19:22. | :19:27.
what is happening to this child and his family at this moment in time. | :19:28. | :19:35.
This charity has helped several children over the years. | :19:36. | :19:40.
Giving your child the option to have the best treatment. As it stands, | :19:41. | :19:46.
America has the best treatment. It doesn't work for every tumour, we | :19:47. | :19:50.
understand that, but if it does work for that child's humour, why not | :19:51. | :19:57.
have it? Ashya King is being treated in Spain | :19:58. | :20:03.
and his parents are refusing extradition. | :20:04. | :20:08.
Let's move on to sport now with Tanya. | :20:09. | :20:10.
Two of our sides are currently without a manager. | :20:11. | :20:12.
Garcia is the favourite. Formerly Brighton. Currently unavailable | :20:13. | :20:40.
since leaving Maccabi Tel Aviv. Steve Clark, a renowned coach, has | :20:41. | :20:49.
talked to the club. And Simon Grayson, the former Leeds United | :20:50. | :20:55.
manager has been linked but he has distanced himself from it. As for | :20:56. | :20:59.
Huddersfield, it looks more clear`cut. Chris Powell is the | :21:00. | :21:04.
favourite with all the bookmakers. They have definitely talked to him | :21:05. | :21:10.
and hopefully we should have both in place by the end of the week. | :21:11. | :21:15.
Well, with a look at that win for Leeds against Bolton | :21:16. | :21:17.
and news of some of our other teams, here's Shamir Masri. | :21:18. | :21:20.
A rare moment of happiness for Leeds United fans. | :21:21. | :21:22.
Stephen Warnock made it look easy to score in the 17th minute | :21:23. | :21:25.
and earn United a 1`0 win, their second in the Championship. | :21:26. | :21:31.
I know the players, they are a good bunch. | :21:32. | :21:33.
Half of them are mine anyway so it is not a problem. | :21:34. | :21:37.
Huddersfield Town will hope to appoint a new manager soon. | :21:38. | :21:45.
After Saturday's defeat they sat just above the relegation zone. | :21:46. | :22:38.
Connor Hourihane put them ahead but an own goal from Martin Cranie | :22:39. | :23:35.
and are the only team that could stop St Helens from finishing top. | :23:36. | :23:38.
You can see more from that match on tonight's Super League Show. | :23:39. | :23:42.
and available on iPlayer from tomorrow morning. | :23:43. | :23:49.
Alistair Brownlee celebrated victory in the final World Series triathlon | :23:50. | :23:51.
of the season yesterday while brother Jonathan missed out | :23:52. | :23:53.
Alistair broke away from the field during the run to take his second | :23:54. | :23:59.
Johnny needed to win to stand any chance of regaining | :24:00. | :24:05.
the world crown but finished fourth in Canada and third overall. | :24:06. | :24:09.
That allowed Spaniard Javier Gomez to claim his fourth world title. | :24:10. | :24:20.
That is your lot. I think it may be a busy week. | :24:21. | :24:35.
Did you have a good weekend? Domestic slavery really. | :24:36. | :24:40.
Finally tonight, how about this for a weird and wonderful weekend event? | :24:41. | :24:43.
A charity claims to have set a record | :24:44. | :24:45.
for the largest ever gathering of people dressed as Sherlock Holmes. | :24:46. | :24:48.
Around 400 people gathered in fancy dress at Temple Newsham yesterday. | :24:49. | :24:57.
Domestic slavery, does your wife now you call it that? | :24:58. | :25:04.
She doesn't do anything. It is all me. | :25:05. | :25:15.
Let us see the pictures that came in over the weekend. Thank you for | :25:16. | :25:23.
that, Martin. The next is a sunset from Ilkley Moor. This is a | :25:24. | :25:27.
beautiful one. Keep the pictures coming in. | :25:28. | :25:36.
Our guests turned out to be the coolest for over 20 years. Details | :25:37. | :25:51.
on the blog. There will be some sunshine around but a big | :25:52. | :26:00.
improvement on August, despite the cloud. There is lots of cloud out | :26:01. | :26:08.
there at the moment. Some brief sunny spells and lots of cloud. That | :26:09. | :26:16.
cloud will break up, especially central and western areas. It makes | :26:17. | :26:24.
to thicken in the East. The sun will rise in the morning at 6:16am. | :26:25. | :26:33.
Western areas are off to a lovely start. Bright with some sunshine. | :26:34. | :26:40.
That will gradually drift westwards through the morning and then we are | :26:41. | :26:44.
all in the same variable weather conditions were that the chance of | :26:45. | :26:51.
an odd light shower. Let's look at those top temperatures. A light | :26:52. | :26:58.
easterly breeze means just 15 degrees in Scarborough. More | :26:59. | :27:05.
pleasant inland. More of the same through the week with warm weather | :27:06. | :27:14.
