1400 children were sexually abused over 16 years. | :01:15. | :01:20.
We also learnt that 12 new victims have come forward. | :01:21. | :01:23.
And the repercussions are still being felt in South Yorkshire ` | :01:24. | :01:26.
There have been a number of significant developments today. | :01:27. | :01:34.
South Yorkshire Police say there will be an independent investigation | :01:35. | :01:37.
into the force's handling of child sexual exploitation in the town. | :01:38. | :01:41.
The Labour Party has suspended four members in Rotherham, | :01:42. | :01:44.
including Roger Stone, who stepped down as council leader last week. | :01:45. | :01:49.
Last night's BBC Panorama programme named one of the suspected abusers | :01:50. | :01:53.
Emma Glasbey has the first of two reports on | :01:54. | :02:00.
It's a town shaken by the revolutions of grooming and abuse of | :02:01. | :02:11.
children. Today, there were major developments. A week after the full | :02:12. | :02:16.
scale of sexual exploitation in Rotherham was made public. This | :02:17. | :02:19.
afternoon, the Home Secretary told the House of Commons it's likely the | :02:20. | :02:24.
Council will face an independent inspection. My Right Honourable | :02:25. | :02:28.
Secretary of State for Communities and Local | :02:29. | :02:34.
Government shares my concerns over the failings by Rotherham | :02:35. | :02:36.
This includes the inadequate scrutiny by the Council, and the | :02:37. | :02:48.
covering up of the information. And this morning, action from labour. X | :02:49. | :02:58.
Rotherham council leader and ex`deputy leader had been suspended | :02:59. | :03:01.
by the party. Along with serving counselors Gwendolyn Russell and | :03:02. | :03:08.
Allie. Today on look North, it was revealed that the Council would soon | :03:09. | :03:14.
be facing more questions. The chief executive of Rotherham council and | :03:15. | :03:18.
the director of children's services will be before a committee and we | :03:19. | :03:23.
will be asking them what went wrong and why no officer of the Council | :03:24. | :03:29.
has been held to account. The Chief Constable for the South Yorkshire | :03:30. | :03:34.
Police announced today an independent investigation into how | :03:35. | :03:37.
his force handled the grooming scandal. He told the committee that | :03:38. | :03:44.
it is has been a huge wake`up call and more are tackling exploitation. | :03:45. | :03:51.
In 2010, we had three staff who were dealing with child exploitation. By | :03:52. | :03:57.
2012, at the time I appeared before you before, it was eight. In 2013, | :03:58. | :04:03.
it was eight and now it is 62. Again, I don't suggest, or even | :04:04. | :04:08.
begin to suggest, that we are finished with this but we are | :04:09. | :04:11.
treating this as seriously and nobody is complacent. The | :04:12. | :04:15.
investigation and suspension was announced today followed last night | :04:16. | :04:21.
Panorama. One of the suspected abusers that remains a free man was | :04:22. | :04:28.
named. He denies the crimes, he said to the BBC. | :04:29. | :04:32.
The Home Secretary has accused the police and council officials | :04:33. | :04:34.
in Rotherham of a "complete dereliction of duty" | :04:35. | :04:37.
in failing to protect hundreds of children from child abuse. | :04:38. | :04:40.
So how is this being viewed in the town? | :04:41. | :04:43.
Our reporter Tom Ingall is outside the council offices. | :04:44. | :04:52.
Tom, what more can you tell us? This story has moved incredibly quickly. | :04:53. | :05:02.
We asked this morning the Rotherham council and South Yorkshire Police | :05:03. | :05:04.
if they would give us a new interview a new interview we gone | :05:05. | :05:06.
from the release of this report. Both organisations to client, but as | :05:07. | :05:11.
was said before, both organisations have come under plenty of pressure. | :05:12. | :05:16.
Many in the town have said the victims are not being listened to | :05:17. | :05:19.
and in the years to come, there may not be enough support for them. | :05:20. | :05:23.
It's been a week since the breadth of this scandal was revealed. | :05:24. | :05:26.
In this town of 250,000 people are 1400 young | :05:27. | :05:29.
Contrasting the silence of officials and stakeholders, | :05:30. | :05:31.
On occasions, you've got to remember there could | :05:32. | :05:37.
It's still having an effect on my life even now. | :05:38. | :05:44.
It's hard, having to walk around your local | :05:45. | :05:55.
town and to see faces that you recognise, and getting taxis | :05:56. | :05:58.
Charities have warned of the dangers, providing educational | :05:59. | :06:03.
resources, but now a member of the original South Yorkshire Police team | :06:04. | :06:07.
who investigated the grooming of children says it was not a priority. | :06:08. | :06:12.
I don't think they were sufficiently organised to deal with the scale | :06:13. | :06:15.
Was child sexual exportation a priority? | :06:16. | :06:18.
No, it just wasn't treated seriously. | :06:19. | :06:24.
I've got to say that, it wasn't treated seriously enough. | :06:25. | :06:27.
The Rotherham Women's Counselling Service provides invaluable support | :06:28. | :06:31.
for victims of rape, sexual or domestic abuse. | :06:32. | :06:34.
They already have a waiting list of six months. | :06:35. | :06:38.
The impact of picking up additional referrals with all of the media | :06:39. | :06:43.
attention, that's simply going to extend the six`month waiting list to | :06:44. | :06:46.
Our attention needs to be 110% with the victims or, as we prefer | :06:47. | :06:51.
There is report after report after report, | :06:52. | :06:58.
there's suggestions about having reports based on other reports. | :06:59. | :07:02.
What I have yet to see is someone actually saying, this is what we're | :07:03. | :07:05.
going to do and we're going to fund services that support survivors | :07:06. | :07:09.
Seven days since the report, but it could be years before victim | :07:10. | :07:16.
feel that they can even start to deal with their experiences. | :07:17. | :07:23.
! Tomorrow the focus will come back to Rotherham council. For the first | :07:24. | :07:30.
time since the report was released, there is a full cabinet meeting. | :07:31. | :07:36.
Many directors will be meeting, with one item on the agenda and that is | :07:37. | :07:41.
to discuss the reaction to the report released. The public will | :07:42. | :07:46.
also be allowed in the meeting, so it will be interesting. Other public | :07:47. | :07:53.
figures have been called to come before the committee and the former | :07:54. | :07:59.
Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police will be headed back to the | :08:00. | :08:02.
committee next week. There are three MPs | :08:03. | :08:05.
for the Rotherham area. One is Labour's John Healey, | :08:06. | :08:07.
who has represented Wentworth I asked him if he was ever aware | :08:08. | :08:11.
of the level of child abuse being No, I had no idea and the Council | :08:12. | :08:17.
didn't brief us on this as MPs and the police certainly didn't talk | :08:18. | :08:23.
to us about it. As some | :08:24. | :08:28.
of the recent programmes have shown, the police were a big part of | :08:29. | :08:32.
the problem in those early years. Extraordinary, isn't it, | :08:33. | :08:36.
that it was open knowledge among the taxi drivers and hotel owners but | :08:37. | :08:39.
local politicians and even Labour That is what you are paid to do, | :08:40. | :08:42.
isn't it? I am a Labour MP, I am proud to | :08:43. | :08:46.
be the Labour MP for this area. If I had had an inkling or | :08:47. | :08:50.
an idea of the scale and the seriousness of this, I tell | :08:51. | :08:53.
you, I would not have let it rest. But there were warnings as early | :08:54. | :08:57.
as 2002 and 2003, right under the noses of local officials | :08:58. | :09:00.
and indeed the police, yet nothing was done under the tenure of Labour | :09:01. | :09:05.
Home Secretary David Blunkett. It says the problem was downplayed, | :09:06. | :09:09.
people believed or said that they The police, it was quite clear that | :09:10. | :09:18.
they treated the victims as responsible for their own actions | :09:19. | :09:24.
when these were children being raped and having illegal sex and they just | :09:25. | :09:27.
didn't treat these victims and these Do you think | :09:28. | :09:32.
the Labour councillors and The report does not say that is | :09:33. | :09:37.
the case. Questions for some of those Labour | :09:38. | :09:44.
politicians in leading positions, including those who have been | :09:45. | :09:52.
suspended by the party today for investigation, and it raises serious | :09:53. | :09:56.
questions about senior council management and very serious | :09:57. | :09:59.
questions for the police as well, Only one resignation so far, the | :10:00. | :10:01.
former leader of Rotherham Council. Tell me, how can anyone have faith | :10:02. | :10:07.
in the integrity of the local politicians and council officials | :10:08. | :10:10.
if they are unwilling to take I think what that Labour councillor | :10:11. | :10:12.
did was take responsibility I think that was | :10:13. | :10:17.
the right thing to do. We've got to rebuild that sense | :10:18. | :10:23.
of public confidence in the council, in politics more generally and | :10:24. | :10:29.
in the actions of the police. That confidence is most important | :10:30. | :10:31.
for the victims of child exploitation and sex abuse | :10:32. | :10:35.
is going on still in Rotherham As we said in the House of Commons, | :10:36. | :10:38.
we've got to make sure those victims get the support and a long`term help | :10:39. | :10:45.
that they will need in the future, The teenager hoping | :10:46. | :10:48.
to be riding high. We meet the Leeds youngster aiming | :10:49. | :10:58.
to add another cycling medal to A special assembly has been held | :10:59. | :11:01.
at the Huddersfield school attended by a 12`year`old boy who's still | :11:02. | :11:13.
missing after being swept out to sea Isaac Nash got | :11:14. | :11:16.
into difficulties whilst paddling The search | :11:17. | :11:19.
for him is still continuing. After four full days | :11:20. | :11:23.
of searching the Anglesey coast, hopes are fading that 12`year`old | :11:24. | :11:29.
Isaac Nash will be found alive. The schoolboy | :11:30. | :11:34.
from Huddersfield was swept out to His younger brother, Xander, | :11:35. | :11:38.
who's ten, was saved from the waves by his father and | :11:39. | :11:43.
went back to school this morning, where a special assembly was held | :11:44. | :11:47.
for the brother's classmates. I am always proud of the children, | :11:48. | :11:51.
but the way they have handled themselves | :11:52. | :11:53.
this morning has been superb. And I think, also, | :11:54. | :11:59.
the way that Isaac's family have handled themselves | :12:00. | :12:02.
and dealt with the situation... I think they've dealt with it | :12:03. | :12:03.
with great strength and dignity. And I think that it's helped other | :12:04. | :12:06.
people, as well Last night, friends and family held | :12:07. | :12:10.
a vigil for Isaac, the children able to grieve in their own way | :12:11. | :12:17.
and a chance for Isaac's parents to see the community support mobilized | :12:18. | :12:21.
by last week's awful accident. The life boat crew have posted their | :12:22. | :12:39.
regrets on Facebook with a special message from Zoe, his family. He | :12:40. | :12:46.
said they had been visiting Aberffraw things the child was born, | :12:47. | :12:49.
and will continue to visit there. Nick Bentley is | :12:50. | :12:53.
the brothers' tae kwon do coach. He says the family are coping | :12:54. | :12:56.
as best they can. I have exchanged a few messages with | :12:57. | :12:58.
Zoe over the last couple of days. They are coping very well | :12:59. | :13:02.
at the moment. Obviously, it is a very difficult | :13:03. | :13:04.
time for them and the whole family. They are concentrating | :13:05. | :13:07.
on trying to celebrate the 12 years of Isaac's life rather than dwell | :13:08. | :13:09.
on the incident that happened. Tomorrow, it's Isaac's closest | :13:10. | :13:13.
classmates that will return here to school for the first time, | :13:14. | :13:21.
joining the younger ones. So another difficult day in store, | :13:22. | :13:23.
particularly That life can be | :13:24. | :13:24.
so fragile is a hard lesson at any South Yorkshire's Chief Constable | :13:25. | :13:31.
has told MPs that the BBC put his force in "a very difficult | :13:32. | :13:44.
position" over a planned search of Sir Cliff Richard's home | :13:45. | :13:47.
as part of an investigation The BBC has been criticised | :13:48. | :13:49.
for having TV crews at David Crompton told the | :13:50. | :13:55.
Commons Home Affairs Committee that the force allowed access | :13:56. | :14:01.
because they feared saying "no" The committee's chairman Keith Vaz | :14:02. | :14:04.
accused the force of incompetence. Criminals | :14:05. | :14:12.
in South Yorkshire must be rubbing their hands with glee with the | :14:13. | :14:15.
thought of having to deal with your officers, who will appear to give in | :14:16. | :14:18.
at the first possible opportunity. I know you won't accept that | :14:19. | :14:21.
because your position before this committee today is that | :14:22. | :14:23.
you blame The Met, you blame the BBC, you blame everybody else, | :14:24. | :14:26.
but as far as you are concerned, Leeds to New York in less than ten | :14:27. | :14:29.
hours ` that's the promise from Leeds Bradford Airport after | :14:30. | :14:38.
they announced the launch of new The service will connect with | :14:39. | :14:41.

customs in Dublin. It'll be operated by Aer Lingus | :14:51. | :14:54.
and it's also hoped the new link will encourage more American | :14:55. | :14:57.

ballot on Scottish independence Well, there's an argument that parts | :15:41. | :15:42.
of Yorkshire are already worse off as a direct result of the government | :15:43. | :15:48.
trying to persuade the Scots to stay In the latest of this week's series | :15:49. | :15:52.
on the Scottish Referendum, here's Fife on the Scottish east coast | :15:53. | :15:57.
glowing in the summer sunshine. It is hard to believe that this | :15:58. | :16:06.
in the middle of a coalfield. There's barely a trace | :16:07. | :16:10.
of an industry where thousands used In fact, there were once more than | :16:11. | :16:12.
50 deep coal pits here in Fife By the '60s, | :16:13. | :16:20.
down to a couple of dozen. But the economic blight remains | :16:21. | :16:25.
so here in Fife what they are saying is that they need government cash | :16:26. | :16:31.
and EU aid just as much as any The whole project is | :16:32. | :16:37.
around young people getting involved The money is spent on projects like | :16:38. | :16:43.
this, giving desperately needed skills to youngsters who design, | :16:44. | :16:47.
build and race electric cars. But here they feel Yorkshire's | :16:48. | :16:50.
coalfields have had a better deal. I can name places like Manvers and | :16:51. | :16:55.
Wath where they have had investment and taken away the spoiled tips, | :16:56. | :17:00.
the old lagoons and build new I don't think in certain parts | :17:01. | :17:05.
of the Scottish coalfield Manvers and Wath, the old pit | :17:06. | :17:12.
complex in south Rotherham has It is now finding that half | :17:13. | :17:16.
the European money it had been relying on to continue the job over | :17:17. | :17:22.
the next seven years is being When we first started, we had | :17:23. | :17:27.
European money, and it did work. We worked | :17:28. | :17:32.
in partnership with the government, It is a question of the levels of | :17:33. | :17:34.
deprivation and yet lots of money seems to be going into areas in | :17:35. | :17:42.
other parts of Europe which aren't In fact, that cut was nothing | :17:43. | :17:46.
to do with Brussels. With just months to go to | :17:47. | :17:52.
the referendum, the UK government ordered the switch of hundreds | :17:53. | :17:57.
of millions of EU funding It was seen as a demonstration | :17:58. | :17:59.
of what benefits the United Kingdom could bring and, | :18:00. | :18:05.
with Europe's funding regime fixed for seven years, | :18:06. | :18:07.
that Yorkshire money is likely to stay here in Scotland whatever | :18:08. | :18:09.
the outcome of the referendum. And we will continue with | :18:10. | :18:18.
our look at what the Scottish independence referendum means | :18:19. | :18:21.
for Yorkshire tomorrow and Thursday Before seven o'clock: A new twist on | :18:22. | :18:25.

from this incident in Friday's Hardaker served a five`match ban | :19:02. | :19:04.

When is Tom going to start doing his own cycling gear? | :21:56. | :21:59.
This is outrageous. How do you know I didn't `` code you know I hung out | :22:00. | :22:05.
the washing and he didn't? Younger brother Joel is on his way. | :22:06. | :22:13.
One of the judges from Yorkshire has been saying that my brother is | :22:14. | :22:16.
better than me and I'm not going to have that. He is not going to be | :22:17. | :22:20.
better than me. There were no Red Arrows Road | :22:21. | :22:26.
closures today, just a young man with a big dream. | :22:27. | :22:35.
That brings back all those happy memories of the Tour de France. | :22:36. | :22:44.
Nice to see you on Ageas day. `` Tuesday. | :22:45. | :22:49.
Do you struggle to get your five a day? | :22:50. | :22:50.
Yes. We all know that fresh fruit | :22:51. | :22:56.
and veg are good for us. But one Yorkshire chef has made it | :22:57. | :22:59.
his mission to get his five a day Tim Bilton opened the Spiced Pear | :23:00. | :23:02.
restaurant near Holmfirth last year. Now he's turned four acres | :23:03. | :23:06.
of moorland opposite And he's recruiting the help | :23:07. | :23:08.
of local allotment owners, too, High on a hillside in sunny | :23:09. | :23:12.
Hepworth, four acres of home`grown This is the vision | :23:13. | :23:20.
of restauranteur Tim Bilton. Having trained under celebrity chef | :23:21. | :23:24.
Raymond Blanc, he has maintained the ethos of using as much fresh | :23:25. | :23:26.
produce in his cooking as possible. Tim brings all the flair | :23:27. | :23:32.
of a fancy London restaurant to the table but his roots are firmly | :23:33. | :23:39.
here in Yorkshire. Working down in Oxford for | :23:40. | :23:43.
Raymond Blanc was an absolute honour and Italy, I have never left | :23:44. | :23:47.
Yorkshire. But even the top chefs can do | :23:48. | :23:57.
with some gardening tips. So Tim is inviting nyone who grows | :23:58. | :24:03.
their own fruit and veg to pop in. He will cook up a free feast as | :24:04. | :24:07.
long as they provide the produce. The National Allotment Society | :24:08. | :24:12.
is backing his campaign. You get a lot of sort | :24:13. | :24:17.
of down`to`earth feeling of actually growing it That is | :24:18. | :24:19.
a big thing for me. Someone will give you | :24:20. | :24:24.
a plant or some advice. We have got a problem with greenfly | :24:25. | :24:33.
and I would love to know how to get rid of that so if I can tap | :24:34. | :24:45.
into somebody's knowledge, The celebration | :24:46. | :24:48.
of home`grown produce will take place at the Spiced Pear in Hepworth | :24:49. | :24:52.
on 8 September. A nice juicy marrow or cultivated | :24:53. | :24:56.
cucumber should get you in. I did have a turn of pineapple | :24:57. | :25:26.
chunks last night. Does that count? Yes, it does actually. Reasons | :25:27. | :25:31.
count. It is a real struggle to have five. | :25:32. | :25:39.
Apparently you have two have 7`10. Let's show you some pictures that | :25:40. | :25:48.
have come in. The header is looking beautiful, the purples. That is down | :25:49. | :25:54.
to how wet it was in August. Keep the pictures coming in. | :25:55. | :26:00.
Tomorrow is rather cloudy with sunshine. It is not straight forward | :26:01. | :26:07.
because there is lots of clouds trapped under this area of high | :26:08. | :26:11.
pressure but at least that means conditions will remain settled. | :26:12. | :26:15.
After the glorious start, we got lots of cloud this afternoon. | :26:16. | :26:20.
Temperatures levelled off at 19 or 20 degrees. There is a bit of a gap | :26:21. | :26:27.
but more low cloud coming up from Norfolk. That will break up and melt | :26:28. | :26:33.
away. Clear skies developing overnight before low cloud returns | :26:34. | :26:39.
and pushes westwards. There might be the odd spot of drizzle but it is | :26:40. | :26:45.
predominantly dry. The sun rises in the morning at around 6:18am. I | :26:46. | :26:58.
suspect when you walk up to clear blue skies this morning. There | :26:59. | :27:06.
should be some sunny spells particularly through Wednesday | :27:07. | :27:12.
afternoon. Just a light breeze. It should feel pleasant along the coast | :27:13. | :27:21.
but inland were the sun pops out 21 Celsius is expected. That is | :27:22. | :27:28.
slightly above the average. Good news for the one`day international | :27:29. | :27:33.
at Headingley on Friday, a full day's play. | :27:34. | :27:41.
Amy has just revealed to me that she is partial to the odd figure. | :27:42. | :27:46. |
