Look North. We're live from College Gredn | :00:59. | :01:02.
at Westminster in London. Five senior figures at | :01:03. | :01:06.
Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police have been | :01:07. | :01:10.
questioned by MPs about how the authorities allowed the sexual | :01:11. | :01:14.
exploitation of more than 1,400 Today we've heard that 25 ndw | :01:15. | :01:33.
victims have come forward shnce the port two weeks ago uncovered the | :01:34. | :01:37.
sheer scale of the abuse in the town. The former Chief Constable | :01:38. | :01:42.
Phil South Yorkshire Police, Med Hughes, told the Home Affairs Select | :01:43. | :01:45.
Committee he had failed the victims. Let's look at who else has been | :01:46. | :01:47.
interviewed today. David Crompton, South Yorkshire | :01:48. | :01:50.
Police's Chief Constable, took up He's already announced | :01:51. | :01:52.
an independent investigation into how the force dealt with | :01:53. | :01:55.
the grooming scandal. He was Chief Constable | :01:56. | :01:58.
of the force between 2004 and 2 11, Shaun Wright, | :01:59. | :02:03.
South Yorkshire's current Police He managed children's services | :02:04. | :02:09.
in Rotherham between 2005 and 2 10. So far he's resisted calls to | :02:10. | :02:17.
resign, but has stood down Martin Kimber, | :02:18. | :02:20.
chief executive of Rotherhal Council, joined the authority | :02:21. | :02:24.
in 2009 and resigned yesterday. And finally Joyce Thacker, | :02:25. | :02:30.
the current executive director of Children and Young Peopld's | :02:31. | :02:35.
Services at Rotherham Counchl. She says child protection sdrvices | :02:36. | :02:40.
have been transformed As it stands at this moment, Shaun | :02:41. | :02:56.
Wright is still being interviewed by that committee. | :02:57. | :02:58.
Today, I travelled down with a mother whose daughter was mtrdered. | :02:59. | :03:00.
She says Laura was a victim of the authorities' failure to | :03:01. | :03:03.
We'll hear her story shortlx, but first Len Tingle has an overview | :03:04. | :03:06.
Full severed and skip on to the committee under oath is subject to | :03:07. | :03:20.
the penalties for perjury. LPs to tell them the truth. For thhs | :03:21. | :03:26.
enquiry, they are demanding it. I swear by Almighty God that the | :03:27. | :03:30.
evidence I shall I shall give shall be the truth, the whole truth and | :03:31. | :03:35.
nothing but the truth, so hdlp me God. It's referencing the police and | :03:36. | :03:38.
officials to be forced to ghve evidence under oath, but thd level | :03:39. | :03:42.
of criticism that followed hs unheard of. You really let the | :03:43. | :03:49.
people of Rotherham down. It was incompetence on your part to be in | :03:50. | :03:53.
such a high paid position and not to know. You weren't aware of hts scale | :03:54. | :03:58.
and scope, what were you aw`re of? The past and present chief | :03:59. | :04:01.
constables of South Yorkshire were the first come under from the | :04:02. | :04:07.
powerful Home Affairs Select Committee. David Crompton rdvealed | :04:08. | :04:10.
that the position has worsened in the past week. 25 more young girls | :04:11. | :04:15.
from Rotherham have now comd forward to say they had been groomed, salted | :04:16. | :04:21.
and raped. I do accept things should have been done differently hn the | :04:22. | :04:26.
past. Med Hughes stepped down in 2011 after seven years of Chief | :04:27. | :04:32.
Constable. At the time I was both deputy and Chief Constable, I had no | :04:33. | :04:36.
idea of the scale and scope of this type of organised crime. We find | :04:37. | :04:43.
this impossible to believe. The most blistering criticism was reserved | :04:44. | :04:48.
ahead of children's services at Rotherham Council, Joyce Th`cker. | :04:49. | :04:52.
You should resign as a mattdr of conscience and in order to try and | :04:53. | :04:57.
cleanse the council. Then Shaun Wright came under scrutiny. | :04:58. | :05:02.
Resigning would have been the easy option given the last fortnhght with | :05:03. | :05:07.
the various criticisms. He's the South Yorkshire Police and crime | :05:08. | :05:12.
commissioner who refuses to resign despite previously being thd | :05:13. | :05:14.
counsellor with special responsibility for children and | :05:15. | :05:18.
young people. We aren't the experts in any of these areas. Shaun Wright | :05:19. | :05:25.
is still being questioned rhght now. I'm joined now by Mark Sergdant | :05:26. | :05:26.
the BBC's local government What questions is Shaun Wright | :05:27. | :05:40.
facing? He's being asked whx he hasn't resigned. Everyone from the | :05:41. | :05:44.
Prime Minister, Ed Miliband, his own crime panel, have called on him to | :05:45. | :05:49.
step down but he says he won't. He said resigning would have bden the | :05:50. | :05:53.
easy option given the criticism he's faced and he's happy to stand by his | :05:54. | :05:59.
record. Tell us the purpose of today's hearing. For MPs to call | :06:00. | :06:03.
these witnesses before the Home Affairs Select Committee to try to | :06:04. | :06:06.
get to the bottom of what h`ppened in Rotherham. Some of these people, | :06:07. | :06:12.
like Joyce Thacker, Med Hughes, haven't appeared in public since the | :06:13. | :06:16.
report was published two wedks ago. The MPs have had the power to drag | :06:17. | :06:21.
them to Westminster, reluct`ntly I suspect, to get answers out of them. | :06:22. | :06:25.
Some of the exchanges have been extremely awkward for the whtnesses. | :06:26. | :06:30.
How much influence does the panel have? Is there any legal relevance? | :06:31. | :06:35.
All the witnesses have been asked to square on oath that they ard telling | :06:36. | :06:39.
the truth and the significance of that is if anyone is found out not | :06:40. | :06:43.
to have been telling the trtth, the perjury laws could come into play. | :06:44. | :06:47.
That is to emphasise the seriousness of this inquest as MPs try to get to | :06:48. | :06:55.
the bottom of what happened in Rotherham, why there were so many | :06:56. | :06:59.
failures over so many years. Is it unusual for them to give evhdence | :07:00. | :07:04.
under oath? It is unusual and the chairman said this was to ldave | :07:05. | :07:08.
those witnesses in no doubt as to the seriousness of the questions | :07:09. | :07:11.
they were going to be asked. MPs have been asking those questions | :07:12. | :07:16.
again and again to establish exactly what these people knew about the | :07:17. | :07:19.
problem in Rotherham. What happens next? MPs made, if they are not | :07:20. | :07:26.
satisfied with the evidence, recalls some of these witnesses for another | :07:27. | :07:30.
session. Keith Vaz, the chahr, has left those witnesses | :07:31. | :07:47.
She says failure of police and social services in Rothdrham to | :07:48. | :07:50.
The Serious Case Review into Laura's death found social care agencies | :07:51. | :08:00.
missed numerous chances to support her. | :08:01. | :08:02.
I travelled down to London with Maggie this morning. | :08:03. | :08:08.
Sheffield station, another stop on a long journey for Maggie Whlson. | :08:09. | :08:13.
It's over a decade since shd says she asked social services | :08:14. | :08:16.
Today she's travelling to London to finally get answers | :08:17. | :09:47.
It is not media driven that he asks these questions. | :09:48. | :09:51.
After the hearing, I watched some of the key moments with Maggie. She | :09:52. | :09:54.
told me she was angry with some of the things she heard. | :09:55. | :09:57.
I'm angry because they aren't answering | :09:58. | :09:59.
It's hard to sit and listen to everything, | :10:00. | :10:07.
they've got to be accountable for the wrongdoings they've done. | :10:08. | :10:12.
A lot of girls have been through hell and back, and their parents, | :10:13. | :10:19.
Maggie joins me now. In the last hour, Keith Vaz mentioned L`ura s | :10:20. | :10:35.
case. When asked why inform`tion had been blocked on the serious case | :10:36. | :10:40.
review report into her death, Joyce Thacker said it was to protdct you | :10:41. | :10:44.
and your family from the prdss, what do you make of that? That's what she | :10:45. | :10:50.
told me. When I got the revhsed version, a lot was to do with | :10:51. | :10:55.
undercover operations going on in Rotherham when Laura's name had been | :10:56. | :11:00.
mentioned. Failings by the authorities were in that report and | :11:01. | :11:05.
that was also blocked? Yeah. If they had concerns, why do they come to | :11:06. | :11:09.
the parents and tell us? I only read it last year about this operation | :11:10. | :11:17.
that was going on. Have you had any of your own questions answered | :11:18. | :11:21.
today? Not really because they have suffered it around, they haven't | :11:22. | :11:25.
answered the questions. What do you think should happen next? They | :11:26. | :11:35.
should go. All of them? All of them. Do you have any confidence `t all in | :11:36. | :11:42.
the authorities now? None at all. Do you feel they are now taking it | :11:43. | :11:47.
seriously? They are, but thdy have to take it seriously now because | :11:48. | :11:50.
it's a big thing. It's going to be a bigger thing. I know today has been | :11:51. | :11:56.
really quite difficult for xou. Are you glad you came along and saw the | :11:57. | :12:04.
questions? Yes. Thank you vdry much for coming with us and I hope you | :12:05. | :12:07.
get some closure from what's happened today. Thank you. | :12:08. | :12:11.
Meanwhile in Rotherham itself, prayers were said at the Minster | :12:12. | :12:13.
Canon David Bliss led a service to remember not only | :12:14. | :12:16.
the victims of the abuse, but also to ask forgiveness for the | :12:17. | :12:19.
A candle in the corner of the Minster will be kept alight over the | :12:20. | :12:25.
next few weeks, so people c`n come and reflect on what's happened. | :12:26. | :12:29.
The Bishop of Sheffield Dr Steven Croft also took part in the prayers. | :12:30. | :12:34.
Our hope is this will be helpful for some people in the weeks and months | :12:35. | :12:38.
to come and will act as a vhsible sign in this community that what has | :12:39. | :12:42.
happened is deep and serious and it's going to take many months, | :12:43. | :12:45.
Well, the Rotherham MP Sarah Champion joins us live now. | :12:46. | :12:57.
We just heard that there is a huge impact on the town of Rotherham and | :12:58. | :13:03.
it's not just going to be hdre for weeks, but it's going to take years | :13:04. | :13:08.
for the town to get over thhs. The town has been devastated by this. | :13:09. | :13:14.
What we need to remember is Margaret has been incredibly, incredhbly | :13:15. | :13:19.
brave coming forward, but there are 1400 children who still havdn't got | :13:20. | :13:24.
any justice and their familhes still haven't got any recognition. Until | :13:25. | :13:27.
we deal with that, we can't move forward. I've been pushing really | :13:28. | :13:32.
hard to get resources to make that happen and also the people that are | :13:33. | :13:36.
accountable need to be stepping up and protecting our families and our | :13:37. | :13:41.
town. Do you have any confidence in the authorities to take the historic | :13:42. | :14:00.
abuse and future abuse seriously? I have faith in the last year there's | :14:01. | :14:03.
been a strong team put in place so I would say to victims, come forward | :14:04. | :14:05.
and you will be taken seriotsly However, the volume of the historic | :14:06. | :14:08.
cases is such that I worry we don't have the resources. I will `sk the | :14:09. | :14:10.
Treasury for additional resources tomorrow. What do you make of what | :14:11. | :14:13.
you heard today? It felt surreal. I could not believe, in this country, | :14:14. | :14:17.
the level of neglect by people employed to look after children and | :14:18. | :14:21.
the threats and intimidation of the front line staff and the victims | :14:22. | :14:24.
trying to get justice. This should never ever have been allowed to go | :14:25. | :14:29.
on and I think it's still going on across the country. Do you think | :14:30. | :14:33.
they were answering the questions? No. We were getting very st`ged | :14:34. | :14:38.
answers. Things were contradicting each other and all it's dond is | :14:39. | :14:43.
opened up a lot more questions. Martin Kimber said if new evidence | :14:44. | :14:55.
came forward he would look hnto disciplinary action and this | :14:56. | :14:57.
committee has raised a lot of new information so I expect him to start | :14:58. | :14:59.
disciplinary actions. It has raised lots more questions that nedd | :15:00. | :15:03.
answering. Tonight the Home Affairs Select Committee is still | :15:04. | :15:07.
continuing. Shaun Wright is still being interviewed. We'll brhng you | :15:08. | :15:11.
more on our late bulletin at 10:25pm. Back to the studio. Thank | :15:12. | :15:13.
you very much. In other news around the region | :15:14. | :15:16.

the protests have been disrtptive, but generous terms are no longer | :16:45. | :16:49.

incinerator near Knaresborotgh have The government pulled its ftnding | :17:19. | :17:21.
from the ?1.4 billion development last year, but the council wants | :17:22. | :17:26.
to go ahead with the plans `nyway. How to get rid of rubbish. Ht's | :17:27. | :17:41.
something they've been trying to sort out in North Yorkshire for more | :17:42. | :17:45.
than a decade and today, despite continuing opposition to thd scheme, | :17:46. | :17:50.
councillors voted for a ?1 billion waste plant near Knaresborotgh to | :17:51. | :17:53.
get the gal aired. This isn't just about an incinerator. This hs what | :17:54. | :18:00.
people are saying, it's crude. This is a waste recovery centre `nd it | :18:01. | :18:05.
will enhance recycling as wdll. But for many campaigners who protested | :18:06. | :18:09.
against this plant, this issue is about the incinerator because 8 % of | :18:10. | :18:13.
waste brought to the site whll be burnt here. But councillors say the | :18:14. | :18:18.
plant, which is that a formdr quarry, is the option which offers | :18:19. | :18:21.
the most value for money and it will mean they won't have to relx on | :18:22. | :18:25.
landfill sites. This is where the incident rate is going to bd built. | :18:26. | :18:34.
` incinerator. The council hnsists this plant will be a decent and good | :18:35. | :18:38.
neighbour to the local commtnity, but four years down the lind and | :18:39. | :18:42.
many people who live nearby still aren't convinced. Councillor John | :18:43. | :18:47.
Sutton age represents the concerns of many residents who live hn nearby | :18:48. | :18:51.
villages. He says health issues are number one. There are a lot of | :18:52. | :18:56.
worries about what will comd out of the chimneys. I want all my people | :18:57. | :19:04.
here to breathe fresh air. This think I can't guarantee to `nybody | :19:05. | :19:08.
that we will breathe fresh `ir. This isn't yet a done deal, it h`s to go | :19:09. | :19:14.
before a full council meeting this month, but even protesters today | :19:15. | :19:18.
admit it's looking very likdly that in the near future, nestled in the | :19:19. | :19:21.
countryside will sit a wastd incinerator. | :19:22. | :19:25.

Lees was the first to go, though, for 86, but Lyth went on to get | :19:39. | :19:42.
a century, his sixth of the campaign, and follows on from his | :19:43. | :19:44.
Gary Ballance took up the m`ntle and despite losing a couple | :19:45. | :19:53.
of late wickets, Yorkshire will be happy with the day, ending | :19:54. | :19:56.
Jane Tomlinson's Run For All has been announced as the new organiser | :19:57. | :20:07.
Jane raised nearly ?2 million for charity, | :20:08. | :20:11.

from South Yorkshire and whdnever she cycled through the area, lots of | :21:08. | :21:12.
people came out to see her. From our point of view, it's a great | :21:13. | :21:16.
opportunity to raise as much money for local charities as we c`n. The | :21:17. | :21:21.
race made headlines in April when organisers cancelled the run at the | :21:22. | :21:25.
last minute after a mix`up with the water supplier. As a result the | :21:26. | :21:37.
Tomlinson charity has offerdd those who entered this year a discounted | :21:38. | :21:40.
entry for next year's event. Anybody who ran last year, we are offering | :21:41. | :21:42.
discounted entry. To acknowledge some of the difficulties thdy faced | :21:43. | :21:43.
last year. This is a fresh start. Paintings that lay forgotten | :21:44. | :21:48.
for 70 years have been restored and put on display at the Clothworkers | :21:49. | :21:50.
Hall in the University of Ldeds The watercolours | :21:51. | :21:54.
by influential artist Walter Foster show typical Yorkshire beauty spots | :21:55. | :21:55.
and landmarks, as Cathy Killick s Yorkshire at the turn of thd last | :21:56. | :22:20.
century, caught in glowing watercolour by an artist so gifted | :22:21. | :22:26.
he was made a teacher at thd age of 12. Walter Foster was the son of a | :22:27. | :22:31.
printer from Bingley. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of | :22:32. | :22:35.
Art at 16 and painted throughout his youth. But just as he was g`ining a | :22:36. | :22:40.
reputation, disaster struck. Walter was sitting on a windowsill here at | :22:41. | :22:45.
his home in Bingley painting the window frame when he heard his | :22:46. | :22:50.
brother calling from below. He lent out, overbalanced and fell. He died | :22:51. | :22:56.
ten years later ` ten days later. His widow, overcome with grhef, | :22:57. | :23:00.
packed up all his paintings and put them in the attic, where thdy lay | :23:01. | :23:06.
undisturbed for 70 years. They were found by his grandson Dave, covered | :23:07. | :23:11.
in dust and soot, but their quality shone through. That moment when I | :23:12. | :23:17.
went in and there was a portfolio by the side of the tank, a box of | :23:18. | :23:22.
watercolours and various oil paintings. It was a life ch`nging | :23:23. | :23:26.
moment. The colours were zinging right through. Very special moment. | :23:27. | :23:34.
Some of the best loved spots in Yorkshire inspired him. Herd are the | :23:35. | :23:38.
ruins of old and Abbey and the fishermen's cottages at Robhns who | :23:39. | :23:44.
at bay. What a discovery. A wonderful, wonderful artist that | :23:45. | :23:48.
captures the coastline. Absolutely wonderful colours and light. A real | :23:49. | :23:54.
discovery. The artist's famhly hope the show will bring faster's work | :23:55. | :23:59.
greater recognition, allowing his reputation to grow once mord. | :24:00. | :24:07.
They are truly stunning. Thd chairman of the Home Affairs Select | :24:08. | :24:09.
Committee says he will be writing to the Home Secretary to see if there | :24:10. | :24:14.
is a possibility of emergency legislation to remove the South | :24:15. | :24:18.
Yorkshire Police and crime commission Shaun Wright. Th`t's the | :24:19. | :24:23.
breaking news tonight. Paul, a clear night? | :24:24. | :24:27.
I think so, the super Moon will be out. A lovely day across Yorkshire, | :24:28. | :24:33.
20 Celsius. Let me show you a couple of pictures you've sent in. | :24:34. | :24:45.
Something Phil mentioned last night, this was part of the flyover, the | :24:46. | :24:51.
Lancaster bombers. These ard Spitfires or hurricanes. Kedp the | :24:52. | :25:01.
pictures coming. Another be`utiful September day to come tomorrow. Dry | :25:02. | :25:06.
with some sunshine. High prdssure dominating the weather, as ht will | :25:07. | :25:10.
do through the weekend and probably the first half of next week as well. | :25:11. | :25:15.
We've had lots of sunshine, some cloud has come down from thd North | :25:16. | :25:23.
West, but 20 Celsius. Very good for the middle of September. Fine and | :25:24. | :25:27.
bright. Overnight, another puiet night across Yorkshire and the North | :25:28. | :25:32.
Midlands. With light winds, you can expect mist and patchy fog. Five or | :25:33. | :25:40.
six in rear roller areas, in towns and cities, close to double figures. | :25:41. | :25:46.
` rural areas. The sun rises at 6:30am. Beautiful start for many, a | :25:47. | :25:55.
bit of mist and fog to clear, then dry and bright with some good spells | :25:56. | :26:00.
of sunshine. There will be some fairways are cloud bubbling up from | :26:01. | :26:04.
time to time, but it won't spoil what will be another lovely | :26:05. | :26:08.
September day. A gentle easterly breeze means temperatures are little | :26:09. | :26:13.
lower along the coast. It whll be a large part of Yorkshire that reaches | :26:14. | :26:23.
20 or 21 Celsius. Thursday should get off to a bright and sunny | :26:24. | :26:28.
start. Eastern areas will sde more cloud gently pushing in frol the | :26:29. | :26:33.
North Sea. Friday at the wedkend, more cloud across Yorkshire, but it | :26:34. | :26:37.
will remain dry and bright `nd there should be some pleasant September | :26:38. | :26:41.
sunshine. Lovely at the moment. I'll be back | :26:42. | :26:49.
at 8pm and 10:25pm. From all of us, see you later, good evening. | :26:50. | :26:51. |
