Good evening and welcome to Wednesday's Look North. | :00:08. | :00:09.
Rotherham's missing child sex abuse documents. | :00:10. | :00:11.
Two senior officials at the council tell MPs that key reports h`ve | :00:12. | :00:14.
Ready to leave but still on full alert. | :00:15. | :00:20.
I've been given exclusive access to the biggest army base in Afghanistan | :00:21. | :00:22.
as Yorkshire soldiers help to close it down. | :00:23. | :00:26.
Beryl Burton gets the Freedom of Leeds nearly two decades | :00:27. | :00:30.
Another lovely day. 21 degrdes was the highest temperature in our | :00:31. | :00:45.
region. How long will it last? Join me for the latest forecast. | :00:46. | :00:53.
Tonight, the missing reports into child sexual abuse in Rotherham | :00:54. | :00:55.
It has emerged that two filds from two separate years have dis`ppeared | :00:56. | :01:01.
The information came out in a second day of questionhng at | :01:02. | :01:06.
Westminster as MPs grilled two of the council's most senior officers. | :01:07. | :01:08.
The chief executive couldn't say if they'd been destroyed | :01:09. | :01:10.
and the head of children's services said she didn't know | :01:11. | :01:13.
whether it had been a delibdrate attempt to suppress information | :01:14. | :01:15.
The question of the day. Had hundreds of young girl is bding put | :01:16. | :01:30.
at risk in Rotherham becausd there had been shockingly few prosecutions | :01:31. | :01:37.
of the criminal gangs groomhng and abusing them? Is that right? They | :01:38. | :01:44.
carried on raping children? Answer the question. Did the perpetrators | :01:45. | :01:53.
carry on? That is right, isn't it? Please, and so the question. The | :01:54. | :01:58.
question. They didn't. The rapists seem to have carried on. Yesterday, | :01:59. | :02:17.
there were concerns issued by MPs. Today, the revelations that copies | :02:18. | :02:22.
of a series of reports which many say prove the authorities knew the | :02:23. | :02:26.
extent of the problem for more than ten years could not be found in the | :02:27. | :02:32.
council's files. They are not within the archives. I have asked to see | :02:33. | :02:46.
please `` previous informathon. Is there a suggestion that these have | :02:47. | :02:50.
been actively destroyed? I do not know. They don't appear to be there. | :02:51. | :02:59.
A senior elected councillor she reported to did not pass on the | :03:00. | :03:08.
information. Until 2010, th`t councillor was Shaun Wright, | :03:09. | :03:13.
Yorkshire's police and I colmission. Do you feel let down by Shatn | :03:14. | :03:20.
Wright? In hindsight, yes I am. The committee will report to Parliament | :03:21. | :03:21.
in the next few weeks. Yesterday, | :03:22. | :03:23.
South Yorkshire's beleaguerdd Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright | :03:24. | :03:24.
said he had had support frol MPs and other colleagues for his decision to | :03:25. | :03:27.
stay in the job, despite thd He is now facing the threat | :03:28. | :03:30.
of emergency laws being considered Our reporter has been | :03:31. | :03:34.
following the story in Rothdrham. What else can you tell us? | :03:35. | :03:48.
Well, just before we get onto Shaun Wright, some more details from | :03:49. | :03:55.
Rotherham council meeting today Plenty of noisy interjections from | :03:56. | :03:58.
the public gallery. The new leader of the council, Paul Lakin, | :03:59. | :04:04.
announced several measures which he thought would make a distinction | :04:05. | :04:13.
from the past. There will bd a ban on all international travel. He | :04:14. | :04:19.
hopes to save ?120,000 which you can invest in to victim support | :04:20. | :04:24.
services. The local governmdnt Association is coming in to help | :04:25. | :04:27.
oversee improvements. That `side, the latest group of people have | :04:28. | :04:34.
called for Shaun Wright to resign. If a week is a long time in | :04:35. | :04:38.
politics, a fortnight in thhs man's shoes masts feel like forevdr. We do | :04:39. | :04:48.
not accept that. Let me ask my question. We don't accept any of | :04:49. | :04:58.
that. The home affairs select committee stated his evidence was | :04:59. | :05:07.
unconvincing. From the Primd Minister down, there are calls for | :05:08. | :05:12.
his resignation. He spent fhve years as the councillor overseen xoung | :05:13. | :05:17.
people services in Rotherhal. He has made things worse by hanging on and | :05:18. | :05:22.
hanging on. I can't underst`nd why he is still there. He should go It | :05:23. | :05:29.
is disgusting. I don't understand this. This has really upset this | :05:30. | :05:41.
town. Yesterday, Shaun Wright said he had received support frol MPs. 12 | :05:42. | :05:53.
MPs said they did not support them and another two have not replied. It | :05:54. | :06:04.
would be difficult to force people to resign without compensathon. | :06:05. | :06:11.
Resigning would probably be the easy option. Deserted by former `llies, a | :06:12. | :06:18.
pariah to his political party, his next file could perhaps be his | :06:19. | :06:23.
toughest yet, at the hands of the public. Tomorrow, he will appear in | :06:24. | :06:29.
front of the police and the panel, the body who scrutinise his work. | :06:30. | :06:34.
They have said it will be open to the public and they will be able to | :06:35. | :06:40.
ask him direct questions. Shaun Wright said he would not be | :06:41. | :06:44.
available for an interview today, but said he would hope to speak to | :06:45. | :06:46.
us tomorrow after the meeting. Joining me now | :06:47. | :06:48.
from Westminster is the chahrman of today's local government hearing | :06:49. | :06:50.
Sheffield MP Clive Betts. Thank you for joining us. Shaun | :06:51. | :07:00.
Wright is still in his job today. Two lead councillors are sthll in | :07:01. | :07:04.
their jobs. What would you like to see happen? I have been writing a | :07:05. | :07:09.
letter to all those concerndd today. The new leader, Paul Lakin, | :07:10. | :07:15.
has announced that Rotherhal need some outside help and urgently. | :07:16. | :07:20.
Probably from the Local Govdrnment Association, so there can bd an | :07:21. | :07:22.
independent look over the responsibility of all officdrs | :07:23. | :07:27.
involved in the failure of the protection of children in Rotherham | :07:28. | :07:32.
over the years. That includds those currently working there and those | :07:33. | :07:37.
who have left. All must be investigated and held to account. | :07:38. | :07:40.
That has to be done by independent experts coming in. Is the blame does | :07:41. | :07:53.
being passed on? She said rdports were not sent to Cabinet. | :07:54. | :07:57.
Therefore, councillors as a whole were not aware of the probldm. She | :07:58. | :08:03.
said that Shaun Wright had stopped the reports from being passdd on. | :08:04. | :08:09.
There are no hundreds of yotng people in Rotherham who havd been | :08:10. | :08:13.
exploited and abused. They desperately need help. The council | :08:14. | :08:17.
admitted they don't know who all the people are and there are no files on | :08:18. | :08:22.
them. There is a massive amount of work to be done to identify these | :08:23. | :08:25.
young people and help them. Rotherham needs help. It nedds | :08:26. | :08:29.
resources. The council needs to put in place a plan of action and then | :08:30. | :08:35.
say to the government how mtch help they need to help those young people | :08:36. | :08:41.
are being abused, exploited and ignored for too long. We had that | :08:42. | :08:46.
reports have gone missing from the cancel. What will you do with that | :08:47. | :08:52.
information? That is somethhng which the Local Government Secret`ry will | :08:53. | :08:58.
be sending people in to invdstigate. This should be a separate enquiry | :08:59. | :09:05.
which I have called for. Th`t clearly needs to investigatd | :09:06. | :09:08.
properly and independently what happened to these reports, where | :09:09. | :09:12.
they are, and then look at what was done about the information `nd | :09:13. | :09:16.
whether it was available at the time. Should Joyce Thacker be | :09:17. | :09:28.
stepping down? There should be a proper evaluation of all actions to | :09:29. | :09:36.
see who is involved and who is accountable. Thank you for joining | :09:37. | :09:37.
us. Near misses on the motorway ` | :09:38. | :09:39.
the new campaign warning drhvers to Next tonight, within the next few | :09:40. | :09:42.
weeks the huge army base in Afghanistan will close, signalling | :09:43. | :09:46.
the end of British and Yorkshire Look North has been given exclusive | :09:47. | :09:49.
access to Camp Bastion to sde one of the most complicated withdrawals | :09:50. | :09:53.
from a war zone in history. Harry has been to meet the Xorkshire | :09:54. | :09:55.
soldiers who are playing a key role Operation Herrick, | :09:56. | :09:59.
as the campaign in Afghanistan is 453 servicemen | :10:00. | :10:10.
and women have lost their lhves fighting the Taliban, many of those | :10:11. | :10:15.
were Yorkshire born and bred. But now the battle is being taken | :10:16. | :10:19.
over by the Afghan National Army and the main task | :10:20. | :10:24.
for British forces is to kedp Camp The figures involved | :10:25. | :10:27.
in this operation are incredible. Already the number of peopld | :10:28. | :10:33.
on the camp has fallen Of 1,800 vehicles, just 600 are | :10:34. | :10:35.
yet to be returned home to the UK. And of a whopping 12,000 containers | :10:36. | :10:46.
which carried equipment and stores, 400 will go home, | :10:47. | :10:49.
the rest will be sold, In the first of our special reports, | :10:50. | :10:55.
we take a look at life at Camp Bastion may be in drawdown but | :10:56. | :11:17.
these men are far from that. Ready for action right up until the end of | :11:18. | :11:23.
their tour. There will be no decrease in the level of protection | :11:24. | :11:26.
afforded by the Squadron here at Camp Bastion. There are those here | :11:27. | :11:31.
who are focused on logistic`l effort to send kit and equipment b`ck to | :11:32. | :11:36.
the United Kingdom. But, for us we are one had percent `` 100% | :11:37. | :11:44.
committed to the defence of Afghanistan and will be no reduction | :11:45. | :11:51.
in that until we leave. The Desert is returned to the Afghans. 400`600 | :11:52. | :12:03.
people were here. There was an infrastructure. Now there is nothing | :12:04. | :12:12.
there at all. It is safe and tidy. All vehicles get a fool valdt. Not | :12:13. | :12:23.
just cleaned, but a fool decontamination. They are | :12:24. | :12:28.
disinfecting everything before it moves to the compound and then | :12:29. | :12:34.
eventually it will go on a plane and head back to Great Britain. This is | :12:35. | :12:46.
a device that saves countless lives. It will be used again. It is like | :12:47. | :12:53.
picking up the Hall of Readhng and moving it back to the UK. There are | :12:54. | :13:03.
lots of vehicles. We are knocking them back about 100 a month. Then I | :13:04. | :13:14.
got a tour of the accommodation This has been my home for the last | :13:15. | :13:21.
five months. What do you do in the evening? There are six of us in | :13:22. | :13:27.
your. We will perhaps play ` game or do something. For the most part | :13:28. | :13:35.
people will watch a film or talk to relatives back home over Skxpe. It | :13:36. | :13:44.
is a routine that you get used to. You have been here for 11 months. | :13:45. | :13:57.
What is it like? There used to be ten choices for food. It is less | :13:58. | :14:03.
now. But we are in the middle of the desert. There is entertainmdnt. We | :14:04. | :14:13.
get a live feed of the BBC. We can keep in touch. You say therd is a | :14:14. | :14:23.
live feed of BBC London. And you are from Sheffield? ! Yes, we mhss you, | :14:24. | :14:33.
Harry. Thank you. How has this changed since you have been here? | :14:34. | :14:39.
Dramatically. Two years ago, each of these compounds was thriving. Now we | :14:40. | :14:47.
are down to the minimum. Evdry week, another camp causes and we get | :14:48. | :14:51.
smaller and smaller as we come towards the end. Do you worry about | :14:52. | :15:00.
what might happen here? Yes, we talk about it. You hope that it will not | :15:01. | :15:07.
go to waste and be used productively once we have gone. We have been here | :15:08. | :15:13.
so long, we have done so much, that for it to just go to waste would be | :15:14. | :15:20.
bad. Camp Bastion is about to close. But let's not forget this. 453 | :15:21. | :15:26.
service men and women never got the chance to go home. But their | :15:27. | :15:31.
memorial will live on. The 03 brass plaques behind me will go to the | :15:32. | :15:35.
National Arboretum in Staffordshire. I am sure you will agree, the words | :15:36. | :15:43.
they are some it all up. Incredible. That is the first time | :15:44. | :15:49.
we have been out to see what happens there. | :15:50. | :15:52.
We will have more from Camp Bastion over the next few days. | :15:53. | :15:55.
Tomorrow, we meet the staff at 34 Field Hospital. | :15:56. | :15:57.
During operations in Afghanistan the York`basdd unit | :15:58. | :16:00.
has become the world leader in the treatment of traumatic injuries | :16:01. | :16:03.
And on Friday we will be finding out more about the protection of the | :16:04. | :16:20.
base and the role of the men from Squadron 34 of the RAF regilent | :16:21. | :16:24.
The safety of the base is in their hands on the ground and in the air. | :16:25. | :16:32.

I have to drive through roadworks every day on the M1 to work, | :17:38. | :17:46.
and they can be annoying as most motorists will probably agrde. | :17:47. | :17:49.
But have you ever thought about those who are carrying out | :17:50. | :17:52.
10 road workers suffered serious injuries last year and with more | :17:53. | :17:58.
than 32 separate road schemds across our motorways the Highways | :17:59. | :18:00.
Agency is now launching a c`mpaign to keep their workers safe. | :18:01. | :18:03.
Our reporter has been to medt some of the workers involved | :18:04. | :18:08.
in serious incidents on the roadside. | :18:09. | :18:16.
Reckless driving through ro`dworks. A lorry driver ignores warnhng signs | :18:17. | :18:22.
and doesn't slow down. Workdrs were lucky not to get hurt. At this job | :18:23. | :18:27.
is high risk. Last year, ten workers were seriously heart on the | :18:28. | :18:37.
roadside. Although traffic jams can be frustrating, people are being | :18:38. | :18:43.
urged to take care. Here, they have set up some scenarios to show was | :18:44. | :18:48.
the dangers that would workdrs face and what is being done to hdlp | :18:49. | :18:54.
protect them. Steve was in ` collision recently and was off work | :18:55. | :18:58.
for weeks when his back was injured. 18 months ago, Van driver slashed | :18:59. | :19:06.
into the back of a vehicle like this. . This crass the Mac crash | :19:07. | :19:24.

getting aggressive. He said he would get his friends round and | :19:42. | :19:49.
everything. Cameras strapped to the chest of workers is a new invention. | :19:50. | :19:57.
That means they can capture incidents on camera and use it as | :19:58. | :20:03.
evidence. The Highways Agency say it could be much safer if somewhat | :20:04. | :20:05.
wrists just slowed down. Nearly there ` after a great day | :20:06. | :20:20.

this is the way to do it. The stubborn opening innings lasted | :21:39. | :21:42.
