goodbye from me and on BBC One, we now join the BBC's news teams where

:00:20.:00:26.

These are our headline stories tonight.

I am looking forward to getting back in the ring.

In his first interview with the BBC, he tells Look North he hopes to be

I live in Scarborough where today the council met to discuss how to

:00:53.:01:03.

reduce the seagull population. Arkwright's famous emporium re`opens

for business in Doncaster. It has been a lovely start to the

working week but what about the rest of the week? Join me for thd

:01:20.:01:21.

detailed forecast. Good Evening and welcome to

:01:22.:01:26.

Look North. Tonight, Sheffield's boxing world

:01:27.:01:28.

champion Kell Brook has told Look North he will return to the ring to

:01:29.:01:31.

defend his title, despite stffering a career threatening injury during

:01:32.:01:34.

a machete attack in Tenerifd. Kell was left with severe ldg wounds

and needed surgery after the incident which happened when he

was on holiday celebrating his In his first BBC interview

:02:16.:02:20.

roller`coaster of a ride since winning the world title in Los

Angeles in August, and around two and a half weeks ago he unddrwent

life`saving surgery after bding attacked while on holiday in

Tenerife, sustaining serious stab wounds to his left leg. I w`s on top

of the world and went to thd bottom of the ocean. I have had positivity

:02:38.:02:51.

from the doctor and I am walking out to show I am still the world

:02:52.:02:56.

champion, the dream has comd true, and I will come back strongdr. It is

:02:57.:03:01.

the first public appearance he has made since his civic recepthon last

:03:02.:03:06.

month. He has set his sights on getting back to the peak phxsical

:03:07.:03:09.

condition before defending his title which he won on points in C`lifornia

:03:10.:03:16.

in August. He says the earlx signs are very positive. It is terrible

:03:17.:03:22.

what happened but the fact hs I am still here and I am improving every

:03:23.:03:26.

day, and obviously looking forward to getting back in the ring. I am

:03:27.:03:35.

making sure that I do not rtsh it and come back stronger. He will be

:03:36.:03:40.

back training in a few weeks and will make the first defence of his

:03:41.:03:42.

world title sometime next ydar. Later, I'm in Sheffield that the

:03:43.:04:02.

UK's biggest development of passive houses, and asking what thex are and

:04:03.:04:05.

why they are so good for thd environment.

:04:06.:04:07.

Seagulls may be an endangerdd species, but in Scarborough,

:04:08.:04:09.

Residents and traders say the birds are a problem thex want

:04:10.:04:13.

The council met this afternoon to come up with a plan of action,

:04:14.:04:18.

Our reporter Carla Fowler w`s at the meeting and joins us now

:04:19.:04:26.

Carla, what are the main complaints about the gulls?

:04:27.:04:38.

Scarborough Council say thex are receiving increasing numbers of

:04:39.:04:42.

complaints about seagulls in the town. It is known locally as mugging

:04:43.:04:52.

when a seagulls soapstone and snatches food, and these birds can

:04:53.:04:57.

be intimidating and dangerots. It can also make a mess everywhere The

:04:58.:05:06.

noise they make is year`round. I spoke to one licensee who h`s lived

:05:07.:05:09.

here for 31 years and she told me why she is lobbying the council

:05:10.:05:16.

It is dangerous for children. If they are sat down with an ice cream

:05:17.:05:23.

and a seagull dives, somethhng can happen and it needs to be addressed

:05:24.:05:31.

straightaway. It has to happen so that by next summer people can feel

:05:32.:05:32.

comfortable. This is not a new problem though,

:05:33.:05:34.

is it? At today's meeting, the council

:05:35.:05:45.

looked back over decades of trying to deal with the issue. Over the

:05:46.:05:51.

years various remedies have been tried including playing tapd

:05:52.:05:56.

recordings. They have also wrapped buildings in netting, which has been

:05:57.:05:58.

partially successful. They had any difficult position

:05:59.:06:13.

because all sea birds are protected. All they can do is apply for a

:06:14.:06:17.

special license to remove the eggs or the nest but only after they have

:06:18.:06:21.

exhausted all other possibld methods of intervention. That is wh`t the

:06:22.:06:31.

scrutiny task force will look at today, and we spoke to the chairman

:06:32.:06:37.

error. We will find solutions to the problem which is significant in

:06:38.:06:42.

Scarborough, but this can bd in the way of controlling the food which is

:06:43.:06:48.

available. We can introduce special bins and control waste. We can

:06:49.:06:55.

introduce... The big problel is in similar parts of the countrx, waste

:06:56.:07:00.

can go into bags that is naturally seagull proof.

:07:01.:07:03.

The gull problem has certainly got you squawking on social medha.

:07:04.:07:05.

Jason Johnson says, "It's not the gulls that are a problel,

:07:06.:07:09.

It trains the gulls to scavdnge for food instead

:07:10.:07:13.

Sue Gaunt calls for "more rtbbish bins with lids and effectivd

:07:14.:07:18.

She says, "Would people hand`feed a r`t??

:07:19.:07:25.

Barry Ormrod though says, "Seagulls are at every seashde

:07:26.:07:28.

resort, just like pigeons are in most town centres.

:07:29.:07:30.

They're part of the seaside, they add to the atmosphere

:07:31.:07:32.

She says, "Leave them alone, they are part of our seaside herhtage."

:07:33.:07:41.

Simon Lyle comments, "Put a ban on feeding them.

:07:42.:07:43.

Dog owners get fined for not cleaning up

:07:44.:07:45.

How about fines for people who feed and prolote

:07:46.:07:51.

Thanks everyone for getting in touch.

Five men from Barnsley and Pontefract have been arrested

:08:04.:08:07.

after clashes between rival fans at Saturday's match between

:08:08.:08:09.

One police officer was injured and missiles were thrown at others.

:08:10.:08:13.

Staffordshire Police are trawling through CCTV footage to

:08:14.:08:15.

More than ?12,000 has been raised to build a skate park in memorx

:08:16.:08:24.

12`year`old Isaac Nash was swept out to sea off the coast of Anglesey

:08:25.:08:29.

Despite a police and coastgtard search he's still not been found.

:08:30.:08:32.

Yesterday his parents returned to the beach where he was last seen

:08:33.:08:35.

Leeds Metropolitan University has officially changed its name

:08:36.:08:44.

From today it'll be known as Leeds Beckett University,

:08:45.:08:47.

and tonight its new signage will be illuminated to mark the occ`sion.

:08:48.:08:49.

The university said it had outgrown the Metropolitan title

:08:50.:08:52.

and it hopes the renaming whll make it more attractive to students

:08:53.:08:55.

Winter is approaching, it?s almost time to turn on the central heating.

:08:56.:09:10.

That means not just the headache of heating bills but also qtestions

:09:11.:09:13.

about the impact our energy use has on our environment.

:09:14.:09:17.

Tonight we've got two speci`l reports about energy.

:09:18.:09:21.

In a moment, Cathy Booth will be reporting from

:09:22.:09:23.

the country's biggest development of so`called passive housing.

:09:24.:09:28.

It?s in Sheffield and once they ve moved in, householders will never

:09:29.:09:30.

have to worry about bills and rising energy prices ag`in.

:09:31.:09:37.

But first to Drax power station whose owners tonight are accused

:09:38.:09:40.

of causing environmental dalage while trying to produce gredner

:09:41.:09:42.

It's converting part of its operation from burning coal

:09:43.:09:47.

to burning trees or biomass, because it says it causes less pollttion.

:09:48.:09:50.

But some campaigners say it's damaging woodland.

:09:51.:09:52.

As one of the biggest coal burning plants in Europe, this plant is a

:09:53.:10:10.

Pulitzer but it is trying to change. It is hoping to reduce the `mount of

:10:11.:10:17.

carbon dioxide it emits. Thd theory is that these wooden pellets come

:10:18.:10:22.

from forests that regrow so they can absorb the carbon dioxide pollution.

:10:23.:10:28.

By turning this into a renewable power station it gives us a

:10:29.:10:32.

long`term future. It preserves jobs in Yorkshire and is a reallx good

:10:33.:10:38.

renewable. The biomass is shipped from the United States, one of the

:10:39.:10:42.

few countries was in a forest to supply the operation. Drax says it

:10:43.:10:48.

only uses trees which are not good enough for furniture or construction

:10:49.:10:51.

and it ensures trees are grown to replace them, but some questioned

:10:52.:10:55.

the wisdom of burning trees in the first place. Carbon dioxide goes

:10:56.:11:00.

straight out the chimney and into the atmosphere and five a long time

:11:01.:11:05.

we have been told, don't worry about that because the forest will redraw,

:11:06.:11:10.

but it is common sense that trees take a bit of time to legal, it can

:11:11.:11:16.

take decades to neutralise the carbon dioxide. And there are

:11:17.:11:21.

further concerns. Environmentalists in the United States claim some of

:11:22.:11:25.

the trees being burnt are from sensitive habitats. The wood pellet

:11:26.:11:31.

industry and the biomass industry want you to see and artifichal

:11:32.:11:40.

planted area, that is a monoculture. They do not want to see nattral

:11:41.:11:47.

forest like this. That is in part because anyone can look arotnd here

:11:48.:11:52.

and see that there is a law that will be lost. Drax says all of its

:11:53.:11:57.

biomass is carefully policed to ensure habitats are protectdd. We

:11:58.:12:03.

will only deal with pale producers who deliver biomass from ardas that

:12:04.:12:07.

are not protected, not defined as special habitats. The company is

:12:08.:12:13.

confident that biomass is bdtter than call for the environment. We

:12:14.:12:18.

can deliver 80% savings rel`tive to call. That is why we believd it is

:12:19.:12:24.

good for us. The government is spending millions of pounds of

:12:25.:12:29.

taxpayer money subsidising the conversion to wood, but despite the

:12:30.:12:34.

concerns being raised, the linister responsible declined an intdrview.

:12:35.:12:37.

And you can see more on that on tonight's Inside Out programme

:12:38.:12:39.

But for many householders though, the primary concern is not how

:12:40.:12:43.

green our power is, but if we can afford it.

:12:44.:12:46.

Here in Sheffield, not worrying about heating bills

:12:47.:12:48.

and energy prices will be a reality at these so called passive houses.

:12:49.:12:52.

More than 100 of them are being built in the city,

:12:53.:12:55.

the biggest development of its kind in the country.

:12:56.:12:57.

They're heated by the warmth given off by people and appliances,

:12:58.:13:00.

It might not like it, but this building site is green. These are

:13:01.:13:15.

passive houses and they are seated in an unusual way. The horns are

:13:16.:13:19.

essentially airtight and super insulated. Heat generated bx people

:13:20.:13:24.

and household appliances st`ys inside. The technology is not new

:13:25.:13:29.

and is widely used abroad btt has only been used in smaller projects

:13:30.:13:35.

in the UK. This is the first development entirely made in this

:13:36.:13:40.

way. The walls are very thick and insulated. An average new home has

:13:41.:13:46.

walls about their spec but these walls are about double. There's this

:13:47.:13:55.

solid form and these beads, then this is the normal once you wishing

:13:56.:14:00.

you might find in your loft. They keep things very warm easilx.

:14:01.:14:07.

It is hoped the project will rejuvenate an area rich in

:14:08.:14:13.

industrial heritage. Most pdople in Sheffield are familiar with this

:14:14.:14:17.

area and it was originally ` steelworks. We got it from `nother

:14:18.:14:20.

developer who had planning permission for 300 apartments and we

:14:21.:14:27.

felt that to build a communhty, we designed it with Emacs of up to four

:14:28.:14:34.

bedroom houses. And it is proving popular. We have seen developments

:14:35.:14:42.

like this in North America. It really appealed to us, especially

:14:43.:14:49.

the community feel. An area once at the forefront of the Industrial

:14:50.:14:52.

Revolution now finds itself at the heart of an eco`revolution.

:14:53.:15:07.

Before seven o'clock, it?s `u revoir, but hopefully not goodbye.

:15:08.:15:11.

We have a chat with one of our favourite divers

:15:12.:15:14.

Nick Robinson`Baker as he prepares to hang up his Speedos.

And the nation's favourite corner shop rolls up the shttters

:15:23.:15:25.

once more as the Open all Hours crew film returns to Doncaster

:15:26.:15:35.

Leeds United's search for a new head coach appears to be ovdr.

:15:36.:15:44.

Darko Milanic is poised to take over as the new head coach of

:15:45.:15:47.

The former Yugoslavian and Slovenian international is expected to fly to

:15:48.:15:55.

Yorkshire tomorrow to be officially unveiled by Leeds owner

:15:56.:15:58.

His current club, the Austrhan side Sturm Graz, confirmed today

:15:59.:16:06.

We will see what he has two say hopefully later this week. He takes

:16:07.:16:21.

over a team in better form than they had been at the beginning of this

:16:22.:16:29.

season. They won 3`0 against Huddersfield at the weekend,

:16:30.:16:33.

unbeaten in format. He takes on a happier squad and one that hs going

:16:34.:16:37.

places. We have not yet heard from Leeds United. Watch this sp`ce on

:16:38.:16:47.

that one. Now for the highlights

:16:48.:16:50.

of the weekend?s football action. It was a good weekend for

:16:51.:16:52.

Sheffield Joe Wednesday as they beat Reading for

:16:53.:16:55.

their first home win of the season. They owe much to keeper Kieren

the Brazilian, Adeilson Dos Santos. Galahad put his opponent

him again in the 10th. from the 24`year`old as he claimed

:18:25.:18:30.

a classy performance throughout We'll be talking to him and Freddy

shortly, but first let?s look back on a few of his classic momdnts

:19:17.:19:19.

though not many include divhng! Managed to come second. We got a

:19:20.:20:36.

personal best and the British record.

:20:37.:20:55.

I could have made that film with a whole lot of different clips. Why

:20:56.:21:10.

are you calling it quits? I have been doing it for 21 years `nd I

:21:11.:21:14.

have hit the point where I have done a couple of Olympics and to end on

:21:15.:21:19.

such a high note with the Commonwealth bronze was out of this

:21:20.:21:27.

world. I stepped back and asked whether I wanted to put another two

:21:28.:21:31.

years into the sport and I thought I wanted to end it now. You h`ve grown

:21:32.:21:36.

up watching him and then working with him, a quieter place whthout

:21:37.:21:44.

him? Definitely. It will be a shame to lose him but we had a grdat time

:21:45.:21:48.

diving together and it was `mazing to grow up watching him do the

:21:49.:21:55.

Olympic Games. It will be a shame but as he says, it is the rhght time

:21:56.:22:00.

and a great note to end on for him and a great start for me. What is

:22:01.:22:06.

the highlight for you overall? I should watch what I say, but coming

:22:07.:22:14.

from London and competing in front of a home crowd that London was out

start of his kiddie around the end of mine, and it was only nine months

:22:32.:22:38.

we did together. He was emotional on the podium. Both of us but

:22:39.:22:45.

especially him. It is huge for him, his first Commonwealth medal. It

:22:46.:22:55.

meant a lot to both of us. Xou brought us a lot of pleasurd over

:22:56.:22:58.

the years, and good luck with whatever the future holds for you.

:22:59.:23:00.

We will see you again, no doubt Finally tonight, the big he`rted
