29th of March. That's all from the BBC's news at six. We now | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tonight - going public about being groomed. | :00:00. | :00:09.
Tonight she gives her first interview on camera. | :00:10. | :00:21.
The police said because I was consenting to it that there was | :00:22. | :00:29.
nothing they could do. Even you were a child and he was a 24-year-old man | :00:30. | :00:33.
the police said they could do nothing about this because she was | :00:34. | :00:37.
consenting? We'll hear more from | :00:38. | :00:39.
Sammy in a moment. Also tonight: Why thousands | :00:40. | :00:41.
of single parents across Yorkshire are missing out | :00:42. | :00:43.
on child maintenance payments. The winner of the BBC's | :00:44. | :00:44.
Big Painting Challenge tells us how she's looking forward | :00:45. | :00:47.
to a bright future. Jubilation for York City's | :00:48. | :00:52.
players and fans - We will have more on that and the | :00:53. | :01:06.
rest of the weekend's sport. And the sunshine made an appearance | :01:07. | :01:10.
this afternoon. It will be cooler this afternoon and I will be back | :01:11. | :01:13.
later with details of potential snow. | :01:14. | :01:21.
The father was this man, Ash Hussain, | :01:22. | :01:38.
He's one of the men who groomed 1,400 girls in Rotherham. | :01:39. | :01:44.
Like all the girls abused, Sammy has a right to anonymity. | :01:45. | :01:50.
For years she called herself Jessica when she was interviewed. | :01:51. | :01:53.
But now, in an exclusive interview with our Inside Out programme, | :01:54. | :01:56.
she's decided to reveal her true identity and to talk openly | :01:57. | :01:58.
I remember sitting in the car and he stroked my | :01:59. | :02:13.
He said, you're not really 16, are you? | :02:14. | :02:16.
And it was almost like he put a spell on me. | :02:17. | :02:24.
Within a few days my parents found out. | :02:25. | :02:26.
They weren't happy at all and they contacted | :02:27. | :02:28.
The police said because I was consenting to it that there was | :02:29. | :02:33.
nothing that they could do unless I made a statement. | :02:34. | :02:36.
So even though you were a child and he was a | :02:37. | :02:39.
24-year-old man the police said, we can't do anything | :02:40. | :02:42.
about this because she is | :02:43. | :02:43.
Yes, and as well, he was extremely well-known to the | :02:44. | :02:47.
He was involved in just about every crime you can imagine. | :02:48. | :02:51.
I wasn't the first or the last child that he was abusing. | :02:52. | :02:55.
There was times when I was having fun. | :02:56. | :02:57.
It was very much a case of a normal, healthy | :02:58. | :03:12.
It was a few months into that when he | :03:13. | :03:20.
started to be very controlling, very possessive. | :03:21. | :03:24.
He started hitting me on a daily basis. | :03:25. | :03:27.
Ash is now doing time for what he did to you and to | :03:28. | :03:30.
It depends what frame of mind I'm in on that day. | :03:31. | :03:39.
There's times when I still feel angry at | :03:40. | :03:41.
And then there's times when I think a part of me will always love | :03:42. | :03:51.
Of the amount of men that you know were | :03:52. | :03:57.
involved in child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, how many | :03:58. | :03:59.
have been locked up for what they did? | :04:00. | :04:01.
We have seen perpetrators held accountable. | :04:02. | :04:06.
And that is good for us because we can | :04:07. | :04:09.
move forward now we are getting that justice. | :04:10. | :04:11.
But I don't think any of us will be able to move | :04:12. | :04:17.
forward, or move forward as a town, until those professionals start and | :04:18. | :04:20.
What is the situation in Rotherham at the moment? | :04:21. | :04:23.
It's about reducing it, making it hard for paedophiles, and putting | :04:24. | :04:35.
But, yes, they will always continue to hurt | :04:36. | :04:39.
How do you feel today as Sammy, not as Jessica anymore? | :04:40. | :04:44.
I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. | :04:45. | :04:51.
I'm looking forward to moving forward with my life. | :04:52. | :04:54.
I think there's a lot of positive things to | :04:55. | :04:57.
come for me and for the rest of the girls. | :04:58. | :04:59.
Sammy, thank you so much for talking to us. | :05:00. | :05:01.
He has covered many stories including child sexual expectation | :05:02. | :05:20.
in Rotherham. Sammy said that there is still happening in Rotherham and | :05:21. | :05:24.
not many men have been locked up for what happened. How many have been | :05:25. | :05:31.
convicted Richard mac so far 19 have been prosecuted and sent to jail for | :05:32. | :05:36.
hefty terms. But to date despite hundreds of | :05:37. | :05:41.
allegations about police failings no police officer has been disciplined | :05:42. | :05:46.
as yet although The Independent Police Complaints Commission is now | :05:47. | :05:49.
looking into those allegations. She also said that professionals, by | :05:50. | :05:54.
which she means police and councillors, should be held | :05:55. | :05:57.
accountable. So far has anyone been convicted? | :05:58. | :06:02.
No, the report published in February 2015 labels Rotherham council not | :06:03. | :06:05.
fit for purpose, the Government sent in a team of commissioners to run | :06:06. | :06:09.
the authority. In the wake of the scandal over high-profile | :06:10. | :06:14.
resignations including the leader of the council, the chief executive, | :06:15. | :06:18.
Police and Crime Commissioner, who was also head of children's services | :06:19. | :06:24.
in Rotherham between 2000 2010, and the director of children's services | :06:25. | :06:32.
left by mutual consent, but nor charges or misconduct hearings. As | :06:33. | :06:36.
far the police are concerned the IP CC says it has identified | :06:37. | :06:39.
significant police feelings and is now investigating those. It said it | :06:40. | :06:44.
is the biggest investigation since Hillsborough and is looking towards | :06:45. | :06:46.
a conclusion by the end of this year. | :06:47. | :06:52.
I have also been speaking to Sammy's family. | :06:53. | :06:54.
You can hear from them on BBC One tonight at 7.30 | :06:55. | :06:57.
Next tonight - are drink-drivers escaping justice because of | :06:58. | :07:01.
An investigation by the Yorkshire Post newspaper found | :07:02. | :07:04.
that the closure of cells in Northallerton means suspects can | :07:05. | :07:06.
take two hours to get to Harrogate police station for a definitive | :07:07. | :07:09.
blood test - and by that time they may be under the limit. | :07:10. | :07:12.
Our correspondent Spencer Stokes is in Harrogate tonight. | :07:13. | :07:20.
Does this mean drink-drivers are getting off scot-free? | :07:21. | :07:31.
Yes, drivers in two districts in north Yorkshire, Hambleton, Richmond | :07:32. | :07:34.
chair, have been providing breath tests into the breathalyser, then | :07:35. | :07:40.
coming back over the drink-drive limit, then being transferred to | :07:41. | :07:47.
Harrowgate police station, having a blood test, the blood test is | :07:48. | :07:51.
returning in one quarter of cases as negative. The acquisition is | :07:52. | :07:56.
happening because the police cells at Northallerton police station have | :07:57. | :08:00.
been closed since last September. The journey time down here to how | :08:01. | :08:04.
big it is a loving the effect of the alcohol to where off. The Police | :08:05. | :08:08.
Federation says in one case the journey was as long as two hours and | :08:09. | :08:12.
in another case somebody who provided a breath test that was 1.5 | :08:13. | :08:16.
times over the drink-drive limit, then provided a blood test here at | :08:17. | :08:20.
how the gate that came back as negative. North Yorkshire Police and | :08:21. | :08:29.
crime Commission has been explaining why Northallerton police station's | :08:30. | :08:33.
custody suite closed and she is the one who authorised that closure last | :08:34. | :08:38.
summer. The police have talked to me about | :08:39. | :08:41.
this and are doing everything they can to mitigate the impact of it and | :08:42. | :08:46.
I think there is an issue here. When the complete results of the pilot | :08:47. | :08:48.
come to me it will be something I will be looking at carefully. One | :08:49. | :08:55.
solution that has been suggested is that police stations outside of | :08:56. | :08:58.
Yorkshire could be used in County Durham or in Cleveland. It has also | :08:59. | :09:03.
been pointed out by the force that the closure of Northallerton this | :09:04. | :09:06.
for a trial period. It is a pilot and that could be reversed. | :09:07. | :09:14.
Later on the programme. I am at a primary school but up to 12 | :09:15. | :09:18.
different languages are spoken including. | :09:19. | :09:22.
Polish. Check. So know the school is | :09:23. | :09:26.
broadcasting in Polish Southwark Eastern European parents know | :09:27. | :09:27.
exactly what is going on. New research by the BBC shows that | :09:28. | :09:34.
hundreds of thousands of single parents are missing out on child | :09:35. | :09:38.
maintenance when an absent An investigation by the BBC's | :09:39. | :09:40.
Victoria Derbyshire programme reveals that more | :09:41. | :09:45.
than a million parents in the UK have failed to contribute | :09:46. | :09:50.
to the upbringing of their children, Nicola Rees has one mum's | :09:51. | :09:52.
story from Sheffield. His dad has been assessed | :09:53. | :09:59.
by the Child Support Agency He has bought him a couple of books | :10:00. | :10:05.
and ?50 at the beginning, in 2009, but we are now in 2017 | :10:06. | :10:17.
and the total amount that he owes What was it like for you, | :10:18. | :10:21.
particularly early on, To do fun things we | :10:22. | :10:26.
would go to the park. I did my best but I would | :10:27. | :10:40.
like to have done more. When couples split up, | :10:41. | :10:44.
they are both still expected to contribute to the cost | :10:45. | :10:47.
of bringing up their children but almost 1.2 million parents | :10:48. | :10:52.
in the UK have failed to pay a total of ?3.8 billion | :10:53. | :10:55.
in child maintenance. The Child Support Agency was set up | :10:56. | :11:00.
to help families in 1993, Computer systems didn't work | :11:01. | :11:04.
properly and parents who didn't pay They shouldn't just be able to walk | :11:05. | :11:10.
away when it is due to their errors | :11:11. | :11:17.
and the poor practice that money That is wrong and the Government | :11:18. | :11:21.
should pay for that. Over 23 years, a multi-billion pound | :11:22. | :11:28.
arrears debt has accumulated. It is money that should have been | :11:29. | :11:31.
available for children. For Laura, the fight | :11:32. | :11:35.
is far from over. OK, yes, that is the | :11:36. | :11:46.
figure I have got. Laura's former partner | :11:47. | :11:52.
is Gary, a children's We asked him why he has | :11:53. | :11:58.
not paid maintenance, In a statement, | :11:59. | :12:06.
the Government said... In 2012, the Child Maintenance | :12:07. | :12:22.
Service replaced the CSA, with new IT systems it was supposed | :12:23. | :12:25.
to solve the arrears problem but it has already clocked up | :12:26. | :12:38.
?93 million in debt. Questions needs to be asked about | :12:39. | :12:51.
how much effort and has put into chasing those who choose not to pay. | :12:52. | :12:59.
I do not understand how he can sleep at night. | :13:00. | :13:04.
Laura Riley ending that report by Nicola Rees. | :13:05. | :13:06.
Let's have some more of the day's news from around Yorkshire. | :13:07. | :13:09.
A trainee soldier from Halifax has been jailed for six years | :13:10. | :13:11.
Private James Farrell - who's 18 - aimed a knife at another | :13:12. | :13:15.
soldier's head at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire after | :13:16. | :13:17.
Prosecutors said the other soldier had to roll out of the way | :13:18. | :13:23.
into the studio a couple of weeks ago because she was a contestant | :13:24. | :13:39.
The TV show follows amateur painters as they take on various | :13:40. | :13:43.
artistic challenges, and the grand final was last night. | :13:44. | :13:45.
If you missed it, the good news is she won! | :13:46. | :13:47.
We can't take the suspense a second longer. | :13:48. | :13:49.
4 million people saw Suman Kaur win the Big Painting | :13:50. | :14:01.
But this morning she was back to work in her | :14:02. | :14:05.
It's been converted into a studio to allow Suman | :14:06. | :14:09.
the space to hone her skill as an artist. | :14:10. | :14:16.
I love art so much and I have worked and worked on my own, in | :14:17. | :14:20.
my room, on the floor, on anything that I could use, to keep my skill | :14:21. | :14:25.
But it got to a point that that was not enough. | :14:26. | :14:37.
When Suman was chosen to take part in the show she'd just given up | :14:38. | :14:41.
a career in prosthetics, helping patients with artificial limbs. | :14:42. | :14:43.
She realised life was short and was inspired to return to her childhood | :14:44. | :14:46.
Winning last night has made the gamble worth while. | :14:47. | :14:51.
Everything I'd ever dreamed about achieving had sort of come | :14:52. | :14:55.
to a climax and it was fantastic, really | :14:56. | :14:57.
That was exactly what I needed at that moment | :14:58. | :15:02.
You are going to start painting with these mops. | :15:03. | :15:07.
The show encouraged Suman to try new, sometimes unorthodox | :15:08. | :15:10.
That far away from the canvas with a tiny brush, and now she's | :15:11. | :15:19.
Just thinking, how can I make as much structured mess | :15:20. | :15:27.
Another highlight came with a surprise visit from her father. | :15:28. | :15:33.
The contestants had to paint a parental | :15:34. | :15:35.
She has achieved something and gone for her dreams. | :15:36. | :15:40.
And in my eyes she has already achieved what | :15:41. | :15:42.
It's just brilliant she's done it and I'm so | :15:43. | :15:57.
glad for her and I'm so proud of her. | :15:58. | :16:00.
With her portfolio growing, Suman Kaur hopes to turn | :16:01. | :16:02.
professional, making her hobby her livelihood. | :16:03. | :16:03.
But your team, Harry, York City beat the overwhelming | :16:04. | :16:17.
favourites Lincoln 3-2 on aggregate to reach the FA Trophy | :16:18. | :16:21.
The fans so deserve this after what has been a miserable | :16:22. | :16:27.
But there's a team there now and a sort | :16:28. | :16:30.
of double on the cards - a | :16:31. | :16:32.
Is a few weeks ago seems like this for York city fans would have been | :16:33. | :16:48.
only on fantasy Island. On Saturday they were for real. Desert, make no | :16:49. | :16:54.
mistake. The school, a penalty, controversial, Seal York's trip to | :16:55. | :16:57.
Wembley in May and will spearhead the continuing battle against | :16:58. | :17:02.
relegation. For the goal-scorer it was a special performance. It was a | :17:03. | :17:08.
big win on Tuesday. We knew that we had the advantage coming here and be | :17:09. | :17:11.
had to stick to our game plan, which we did. We managed to win both | :17:12. | :17:14.
games, that was a credit to ourselves. For Gary Mills and has a | :17:15. | :17:19.
chance to look back to his last Wembley experience. What a day that | :17:20. | :17:23.
wasn't he would use this to motivate the team ahead of tomorrow's vital | :17:24. | :17:28.
league match against Southport. It is what I intended to do is to get | :17:29. | :17:32.
to Wembley and keep us in the lead. I have done the first part. There is | :17:33. | :17:36.
a different atmosphere around the football club. The most important | :17:37. | :17:40.
thing is staying in the league. But let does not take away what we | :17:41. | :17:44.
achieved on Saturday against a very good side. Let us be blunt, was | :17:45. | :17:49.
there ever a time when you thought this was Mission impossible? I have | :17:50. | :17:53.
got to be honest. Since I have been managing, this is the toughest | :17:54. | :17:58.
challenge I have had. The challenge before, we were in the bottom for | :17:59. | :18:07.
then, but I have the better squad. But certainly coming back this time, | :18:08. | :18:13.
I have always believed that it was going to take time, and we lost a | :18:14. | :18:21.
few games because in the turnaround period. I believe I do what I do, | :18:22. | :18:31.
and I love what I do. And this club, I do not want to start getting | :18:32. | :18:36.
sentimental over it, but that is they feel with myself and this | :18:37. | :18:40.
cookbook that we have got something that works. I always believe that we | :18:41. | :18:46.
could come back and achieve. Now I have got to go and prove what I am | :18:47. | :18:49.
saying is right by keeping us in this league. It was a good | :18:50. | :18:54.
performance. Going to Wembley. Lots more to look forward to as well. | :18:55. | :19:00.
Leeds United strengthened their position in the Championship | :19:01. | :19:02.
playoff places by beating promotion rivals Brighton 2-0 at Elland Road. | :19:03. | :19:07.
The visitors would have gone top of the table with a win, | :19:08. | :19:10.
but Leeds produced probably their best result of the season - | :19:11. | :19:12.
and one of their best performances as well. | :19:13. | :19:15.
Chris Wood's header from Charlie Taylor's | :19:16. | :19:18.
And when Souleymane Doukara was fouled, Wood smashed in his 24th | :19:19. | :19:22.
league goal of the season from the penalty spot. | :19:23. | :19:24.
All our other Championship sides lost, but Huddersfield | :19:25. | :19:29.
and Sheffield Wednesday stay in the top six. | :19:30. | :19:33.
In Leagues One and Two, it's surely only a matter of time | :19:34. | :19:36.
now until both Sheffield United and Doncaster Rovers are promoted, | :19:37. | :19:38.
while Bradford City are well placed for the playoffs at least. | :19:39. | :19:41.
All three won on Saturday, as Dave Edwards reports. | :19:42. | :19:49.
When the season began Sheffield United manager told us they have | :19:50. | :19:55.
been in League 1 for far too long. It will not be much longer now. Jack | :19:56. | :20:01.
O'Connell got the faintest of touches to equalise against | :20:02. | :20:04.
Charlton. When Daniel Lafferty's header was saved he was left with an | :20:05. | :20:08.
easy tap in for the winner. Bradford also recovered from one goal down at | :20:09. | :20:13.
home to Swindon. With five bullets left they were queueing up at the | :20:14. | :20:17.
back post for Mark Marshall's cross. Any one of the players might have | :20:18. | :20:23.
headed this in. And from there they sensed blood. No settling for a | :20:24. | :20:28.
point here. Into injury time, just five yards out, great first touch, | :20:29. | :20:34.
2-1. Sheffield United 's Lee Clegg champions elect with a healthy lead. | :20:35. | :20:39.
Bradford are only three points off automatic commotion. Chesterfields | :20:40. | :20:43.
looked doomed. Ten points from safety after losing at Bristol | :20:44. | :20:47.
Rovers. Tommy Bowe set Doncaster on their way to a 4-1 win at Leyton | :20:48. | :20:55.
Orient. And you would not expect this from a centre back. A sweetly | :20:56. | :21:00.
struck volley finished off yet another win for Rovers, who could | :21:01. | :21:04.
seal promotion with in less than a fortnight. | :21:05. | :21:07.
In rugby union, there was an important win | :21:08. | :21:09.
for Doncaster Knights yesterday in the local derby | :21:10. | :21:11.
Two tries from Andy Bulumakau helped the Knights open up a 31-14 | :21:12. | :21:16.
lead, but they ended up playing with just 13 men in | :21:17. | :21:18.
Carnegie almost regained the lead but fell just short | :21:19. | :21:24.
It means both sides are on course to reach the end-of-season playoffs. | :21:25. | :21:33.
The way we saw the game out was outstanding. It was not pretty but | :21:34. | :21:41.
to keep the ball, and then from the scrum to win it, going to 13 men, it | :21:42. | :21:46.
is an heroic effort. We had opportunities in certain parts of | :21:47. | :21:51.
the game which we did not take. I am disappointed. We got two points out | :21:52. | :21:56.
of it. We have to focus on that. Can they play better? Maybe. Can we? | :21:57. | :22:00.
Yes, if we tidy up some of the big decisions. | :22:01. | :22:01.
In Super League, the early pacesetters Castleford Tigers | :22:02. | :22:03.
were beaten for the first time this season, losing to Salford | :22:04. | :22:05.
on the Super League Show tonight at 11.30. | :22:06. | :22:16.
Kell Brook has confirmed his next fight will be against the unbeaten | :22:17. | :22:24.
American Spence. A press conference will make the formal announcement. | :22:25. | :22:32.
It is thought he will defend the title on the home ground of the | :22:33. | :22:33.
blades. If you re a parent you'll know how | :22:34. | :22:36.
hard it can be keeping across what's Imagine then how difficult | :22:37. | :22:40.
it is for a headteacher if a lot At one school in Bradford - | :22:41. | :22:44.
where a lot of children are Polish - they were worried not many parents | :22:45. | :22:49.
read or even understood But now, they have a solution - | :22:50. | :22:52.
as Charlotte Leeming reports. The pick-up and drop-off at this | :22:53. | :23:00.
primary in Bradford is different to Booming out of the playground | :23:01. | :23:03.
speakers is all the latest school news, broadcast in Polish | :23:04. | :23:09.
for those who don't speak English. And teaching assistant Thomas | :23:10. | :23:13.
using using the school's very own radio studio has taken | :23:14. | :23:16.
on a new role of presenter. A lot of parents used to come to me | :23:17. | :23:20.
with their questions about Now they can hear our | :23:21. | :23:30.
broadcasts outside There are 430 pupils here | :23:31. | :23:34.
with around 10% of them coming from And that number is | :23:35. | :23:40.
rising all the time. This person is from Poland | :23:41. | :23:49.
and has a son in year four. As she is still learning | :23:50. | :23:52.
the English language she struggles to understand school | :23:53. | :23:55.
letters and e-mails that are sent With these new radio shows that | :23:56. | :23:57.
will no longer be a problem. Every single morning | :23:58. | :24:01.
the parents can hear a broadcast, they will know what is | :24:02. | :24:08.
going on in school and they can prepare themselves | :24:09. | :24:11.
and their children. It's also proving to | :24:12. | :24:13.
be a hit with pupils. It is helping them understand | :24:14. | :24:15.
more English and what's You have to say it in English | :24:16. | :24:26.
and sometimes it is confusing because you say one thing | :24:27. | :24:37.
and mean something else. Thomas' new show should | :24:38. | :24:50.
help avoid any future They just need their teaching | :24:51. | :24:51.
assistant to get used to a Let us take a look at some footage | :24:52. | :25:11.
that we have got of Tadcaster Bridge, only recently reopened. A | :25:12. | :25:15.
lot of debris in the water. The Environment Agency are working on | :25:16. | :25:19.
that. They want to put out the message that it is not a flood risk | :25:20. | :25:23.
despite their reign over the weekend. River levels are going | :25:24. | :25:26.
down. We have had some soggy weather over the weekend that the main | :25:27. | :25:30.
emphasis of the weather over the next couple of days is a chilly one. | :25:31. | :25:34.
It will feel noticeably cooler. Possibly some snore in the forecast. | :25:35. | :25:41.
Tomorrow noticeably cooler. The mix of sunshine and showers, alone and | :25:42. | :25:44.
on a chilly breeze. Overnight tonight we might get one centimetre | :25:45. | :25:54.
across hilly parts. Low midweek. Tuesday night into Wednesday. We are | :25:55. | :25:58.
going to monitor how this area of low pressure behaves over the next | :25:59. | :26:03.
24 hours but that is the potential for a use integers of snow even to | :26:04. | :26:07.
low levels by Wednesday morning. This morning started off soggy. You | :26:08. | :26:14.
can see that cloud moving out to the south-east. Plenty of sunshine | :26:15. | :26:17.
through this afternoon. Already if you showers around. A mix of clear | :26:18. | :26:22.
spells and scattered showers. It might be that over the hills we | :26:23. | :26:26.
could get one centimetre of snow. Scattered showers. It will not be a | :26:27. | :26:32.
blanket. This might mean if you slip and icy surfaces into tomorrow | :26:33. | :26:35.
morning as temperatures drop back to around freezing. The Sun will rise | :26:36. | :26:49.
at seven minutes past six. A chilly, frosty start to the day tomorrow. | :26:50. | :26:52.
There will be a good deal of sunshine particularly in the East. | :26:53. | :26:57.
There will be quite if you showers being blown in. The show was | :26:58. | :27:01.
initially wintry over high ground. There might be the odd rumble of | :27:02. | :27:06.
thunder, and he'll mix them as well. It will feel cooler. Last week, 15, | :27:07. | :27:13.
16 degrees. Seven or 8 degrees. Keep tuned to the forecast for Tuesday | :27:14. | :27:17.
night into Wednesday. That is of no. I will be back at | :27:18. | :27:23.
eight o'clock for an update. Enjoy the rest of the evening. Good | :27:24. | :27:24.
night. The 24-year-old man | :27:25. | :27:59.
has been charged with murder. You made sure an innocent man | :28:00. | :28:02.
is charged! What gives you the right | :28:03. | :28:04.
to say that he's innocent? If police wrongdoing | :28:05. | :28:06.
is part of this, I want to know. | :28:07. | :28:14. |
