Paramedics in Yorkshire are warning that users of the banned drug Spice

are putting themselves and health staff at risk by taking the drug.

They say the unpredictable effects of it on users is making their job

harder and putting them at risk of assault.

Cathy Killick has more on this story - a warning, her report contains

Leeds city centre, Spice isn't hard to find.

Adam and Derek use it regularly, despite its unpredictable effects.

A really, really, really bad trip on certain type of Spice,

which is a little bit rare, is where your heart's pumping

out your chest and you feel like you're going to,

you know, your heart's going to explode.

Since the ban's came in, I think it's easier to get hold

The drug sometimes causes users to enter a zombie-like state.

But it can also cause psychotic episodes that paramedics find

Spitting, biting, punching, kicking, those kind of things

are what paramedics have to put up with, so it is really

important for people to realise this substance,

whatever it is you're taking, you have no idea what it is and it

could kill you, and unfortunately, that's what we are seeing.

At the Lighthouse Project in Leeds, users themselves also

Three years ago, that's when my life started with Spice.

The drug was made illegal a year ago, with a maximum five year prison

It's gone underground, if you like, and anecdotally I think supply

is still readily available, and unfortunately,

That has created a toxic trap, with users succumbing very quickly

to to its extremely addictive properties, and straining health

Sheffield is celebrating its 40th World Snooker Championship today.

The Crucible Theatre has hosted the tournament since 1977

and the contenders for the trophy this year have been gathering

James Vincent has been in Sheffield for a look.

They were inside the home of snooker for the pre-tournament media day.

Ding Junhui has lived in the city for ten years now.

He says this is a home tournament for him.

It is not much chance, the players can play the home towns

I love the people, people in Sheffield, it's nice,

and this is special for me, because, you know, I love here,

In a few hours' time, we will have 17 days of world class

They have been here for four decades.

You know what they say, life begins at 40.

We will have at least ten more years of the World

If it moved from here, it would lose a bit of prestige

If you speak to anyone, saying the World Championship of snooker,

everyone knows it is played at The Crucible.

If it was to move, it would be a shame.

Earlier this evening hundreds turned out to welcome some of the legends

of the game as they walked down the "green" carpet,

Sheffield's putting on a bit of a show this year

The next two weeks - well, they're up to the players.

at Port Vale to move a step closer to the title.

And in League Two, already promoted Doncaster drew 1-1 with Colchester.

Cricket - and rain affected Yorkshire's second match

of the season against Warwickshire today.

For the next two evenings in the haunting atmosphere

of Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire there's a chance to witness what's

called a brokken spectre, where you may see your own shadow

Our news correspondent, John Cundy, had a sneak preview.

Night falls on the ruins of 12th century Rievaulx Abbey.

The perfect time to re-enact a brokken spectre.

Brokken spectre takes its inspiration from the north

There, under certain conditions of light,

a person can see their shadow projected on to the clouds

But then, before the spectre itself, visitors will see artist Michael's

incredible illumiphoniumm light up the Abbey.

It's like a portable venue we take to festivals or, you know, events,

and people can come together and play some music,

in a completely intuitive and spontaneous way.

And coming through the walls of the Abbey, the recorded haunting

sounds of children speaking from Helmsley Primary School.

Closer now, nearly here, time to go to bed now, Annabel shouts.

And so to try recreating the strange image of a brokken spectre.

Basically, a brokken spectre is where the sun's behind you,

mist's in front of you, your shadow is cast on the mist

and around your head is an iridescent glory.

As you can see, tricky to show, but hopefully visitors

to the brokken spectre will begin to see the light these

A chilly start tomorrow, and it's a day of sunshine and showers.

One or two showers coming down in that brisk north-westerly wind,

many places will miss them and stay dry, and bright through the day.

Temperatures peak around 11 Celsius, which is 52 degrees Fahrenheit.
