Good evening, you're watching Monday's Look North.

:00:00.:00:00.

On the programme tonight: The family of a seven-year-old girl killed

:00:07.:00:09.

Four months after Katie Rough's death, her parents say

:00:10.:00:13.

they want to thank the community for their support.

:00:14.:00:23.

We have had support from the local community but also all over the

:00:24.:00:28.

world, hundreds of letters and messages, and people have been so

:00:29.:00:32.

kind, and we wanted to say thank you.

:00:33.:00:33.

500 tonnes of plastic are on fire in Rotherham,

:00:34.:00:36.

with residents warned not to leave their homes.

:00:37.:00:38.

Bradford City are off to Wembley again -

:00:39.:00:40.

we'll tell you how the Bantams secured their place

:00:41.:00:42.

We are at the largest climbing wall in the country,

:00:43.:00:51.

It looks like another predominantly dry week across Yorkshire,

:00:52.:00:57.

with hints of something a little bit more unsettled, though,

:00:58.:00:59.

The parents of Katie Rough, the seven-year-old who died

:01:00.:01:18.

after being found with severe injuries on a playing field

:01:19.:01:20.

in York in January, have given their first interview.

:01:21.:01:22.

Paul and Alison Rough have also thanked the community

:01:23.:01:24.

for its support, and said they couldn't have coped without it.

:01:25.:01:28.

We've got each other, and we've got a good family network...

:01:29.:01:49.

Work helps a bit, doesn't it, to work?

:01:50.:01:51.

Yeah, work is keeping me busy as well.

:01:52.:01:53.

And the bond between you is a strength, isn't it?

:01:54.:01:56.

Some might say, why did you feel the need to do this interview?

:01:57.:02:01.

We are doing this to promote a fun day at the Acorn Rugby Club

:02:02.:02:13.

that we are holding on the 9th of June from 5pm.

:02:14.:02:16.

Most of it is free, the majority of it is free.

:02:17.:02:19.

It is a thank you to the people of York for all of their support.

:02:20.:02:23.

We have had support from the local community,

:02:24.:02:25.

but also all over the world, hundreds of letters, and messages.

:02:26.:02:27.

People have just been so kind and we just wanted to say thank you.

:02:28.:02:33.

We get a lot of people, we don't know them, and they come up

:02:34.:02:37.

and introduce themselves and they have got sad

:02:38.:02:39.

stories themselves, or they just give us a cuddle.

:02:40.:02:41.

We go to York City Church, we have had a lot of support from them.

:02:42.:02:51.

Our meals for the first month and a half.

:02:52.:02:54.

They fed us for the first few weeks, if it weren't for them

:02:55.:02:57.

But they came with meals and things...

:02:58.:03:00.

And obviously the Archbishop has been...

:03:01.:03:01.

He has been visiting and kept in touch, and made

:03:02.:03:07.

Tell us something about your little girl.

:03:08.:03:12.

Katie, she was... Amazing.

:03:13.:03:14.

Yeah, she was shy, out, you know, with other people,

:03:15.:03:34.

She was just your typical seven-year-old girl.

:03:35.:03:40.

She liked to snuggle up in bed at night.

:03:41.:03:48.

She used to sleep in our bed nearly every night -

:03:49.:03:51.

even though she was seven, she was still sneaking

:03:52.:03:53.

The pink bunny has been with Katie since she was 12 days old.

:03:54.:03:57.

Every week when he got her pocket money on the Friday,

:03:58.:04:00.

But she always went back to this one.

:04:01.:04:06.

This was the original and this was the one she always went back to.

:04:07.:04:09.

The pink rabbit stayed with her while she was

:04:10.:04:11.

in the funeral home, and it stayed with her

:04:12.:04:13.

until the very last minute and then came back to us.

:04:14.:04:18.

The pink rabbit means a lot to us. Where do you think you will get your

:04:19.:04:25.

strength over the weeks ahead? The family and each other.

:04:26.:04:31.

Yes, close family. We bounce off each other, so when one is

:04:32.:04:34.

struggling the other is a bit stronger, and if I am struggling, he

:04:35.:04:43.

is stronger for me and vice versa. Yes, we have each other, don't we?

:04:44.:04:45.

Incredible bravery there by Paul and Alison.

:04:46.:04:47.

I am sure everyone will want to share their best wishes

:04:48.:04:50.

A teenage girl is going to stand trial for Katie's murder in July.

:04:51.:04:59.

Next tonight, a fire at a recycling centre in Rotherham has caused

:05:00.:05:02.

disruption to the local area, after 500 tonnes of

:05:03.:05:04.

People were told to stay inside and keep windows and doors

:05:05.:05:08.

closed, and to get children inside as soon as

:05:09.:05:10.

This was the scene across parts of Rotherham for most of the day -

:05:11.:05:16.

thick black smoke billowing from the Universal Recycling Factory

:05:17.:05:18.

in Kilnhurst, where 500 tonnes of plastic caught fire around

:05:19.:05:20.

Nearby schools and nurseries were told to keep their children

:05:21.:05:27.

indoors, and police handed out facemasks as a safety precaution.

:05:28.:05:33.

They have just popped in and out to make sure we are all right.

:05:34.:05:38.

They have been escorting parents down from the church when the roads

:05:39.:05:41.

were blocked off from traffic, so they have escorted children

:05:42.:05:44.

down into the nursery, but masks on and escorted

:05:45.:05:46.

They have taken a list of all of the children that

:05:47.:05:50.

They have been really, really good and gave

:05:51.:05:53.

us loads of facemasks and been really helpful.

:05:54.:05:55.

Residents in this area have been asked to stay inside

:05:56.:05:57.

and keep their doors and windows closed.

:05:58.:05:59.

Those who have had to leave their premises have been issued

:06:00.:06:01.

with masks so that they don't breathe in the smoke,

:06:02.:06:04.

And those living nearest the fire are not being

:06:05.:06:07.

I have just been speaking to Environmental Health,

:06:08.:06:11.

who say that we are not actually going to be allowed on site

:06:12.:06:14.

until tomorrow morning, so we have got to find alternative

:06:15.:06:16.

The Fire Service are taking the lead and we are supporting them

:06:17.:06:21.

with the ambulance to make sure everybody is safe.

:06:22.:06:24.

And all of the properties are protected to that we can return

:06:25.:06:27.

the community to a state of normality as quickly

:06:28.:06:29.

And it wasn't just people who were affected -

:06:30.:06:32.

many residents rushed back home, concerned for their pets.

:06:33.:06:34.

The Fire Services say they have managed to contain the blaze,

:06:35.:06:37.

but it could be a while yet before it is extinguished.

:06:38.:06:44.

We have switched from using foam to using water,

:06:45.:06:47.

and we are using copious amounts of water to try to get

:06:48.:06:50.

to the heart of the fire, but it is going to be some time

:06:51.:06:53.

Tonight those living close to the scene are waiting

:06:54.:06:56.

for the all clear so that they can return to normality,

:06:57.:06:59.

Michelle Lyons, BBC Look North, Kilnhurst.

:07:00.:07:02.

Later on Look North: A singing sensation.

:07:03.:07:09.

We'll meet the singer who became an internet hit after joining

:07:10.:07:18.

in with a busker on a night out in Leeds.

:07:19.:07:24.

York has been chosen to host a special election TV programme

:07:25.:07:26.

featuring the Prime Minister and the Labour leader

:07:27.:07:31.

In the Question Time Special, Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn

:07:32.:07:34.

will answer questions from an invited audience.

:07:35.:07:36.

At the last General Election in 2015, Leeds was the venue

:07:37.:07:39.

for a similar programme involving the party leaders.

:07:40.:07:43.

Our political reporter, James Vincent, joins us from York.

:07:44.:07:52.

Lovely setting there, but white Yorkshire began?

:07:53.:07:59.

As you know, when York was a Roman city, it was the centre about

:08:00.:08:02.

literally everything in the North of England, the military and politics.

:08:03.:08:07.

A couple of thousand years later, the centre of debating this

:08:08.:08:12.

election. North Yorkshire is completely conservative, back from

:08:13.:08:15.

where I am standing now, York Central. The Labour MP here has a

:08:16.:08:19.

majority of around 7000 votes. Labour will be helping to keep this

:08:20.:08:24.

place. Conservatives are also eyeing it up. It is like a microcosm of the

:08:25.:08:29.

election in Yorkshire. What can the Labour Party hold on to? And what

:08:30.:08:33.

can be Tories nick from them? Two years ago we had the debate at Leeds

:08:34.:08:37.

hole. The leaders there faced questions from the public and had a

:08:38.:08:42.

rough ride from the people of Yorkshire, tough questions and

:08:43.:08:45.

interesting answers as well. That is one reason why the BBC want to come

:08:46.:08:47.

back to Yorkshire to do it again. We chose York for a whole

:08:48.:08:49.

load of reasons. We like to spread these

:08:50.:08:51.

programmes around the country, and we felt that one

:08:52.:08:53.

of the important points was to get out of London,

:08:54.:08:55.

take the leaders outside London, and then to look for a major centre

:08:56.:08:58.

that isn't massively leaning historically one way or the other

:08:59.:09:01.

electorally, and York has been a Conservative city and a Labour

:09:02.:09:03.

city over the years, so it felt like a really good

:09:04.:09:06.

opportunity to come to York. And we know that we will get

:09:07.:09:11.

a very good audience - we always do when we bring debate

:09:12.:09:14.

programmes to the north of England. There has been some criticism about

:09:15.:09:23.

the fact that Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn are not debating head to

:09:24.:09:26.

head. Yes, there has been a debate about

:09:27.:09:30.

the debate, Theresa May says she does not want to do a debate on

:09:31.:09:33.

Jeremy Corbyn has called her chicken and says she is running scared.

:09:34.:09:37.

Theresa May says she would rather go out and meet bloggers. That is

:09:38.:09:43.

exactly what you will be doing, one microphone, to leaders and a

:09:44.:09:45.

Yorkshire audience asking them questions. The leaders got a hard

:09:46.:09:50.

time last time, with her questions. I would recommend getting into your

:09:51.:09:55.

diary now, and watching it for the election. It is on June the 2nd,

:09:56.:09:57.

this programme. Detectives have described

:09:58.:09:57.

the disappearance of a woman in West Yorkshire

:09:58.:09:59.

as a ''genuine mystery." 40-year-old Svitlana Krasnoselska

:10:00.:10:01.

:10:02.:10:03.

inquiries, there have been no She's known to her friends as Lana

:10:09.:10:16.

:10:17.:10:19.

despite our extensive inquiries so far, but we have got some

:10:20.:10:25.

enquiries ongoing in the Ukraine. It is very unusual not to have any

:10:26.:10:28.

trace, and for an individual like this to just vanish,

:10:29.:10:31.

because people don't just vanish and disappear into thin air,

:10:32.:10:34.

so that's what's really One of Yorkshire's Ukip MEPs -

:10:35.:10:36.

Jane Collins - could face bankruptcy after failing to pay hundreds

:10:52.:10:55.

a 21-day payment deadline. Ms Collins had been sued for libel

:10:56.:10:59.

by three South Yorkshire MPs after claiming they'd known

to contact the police. Only one real thing to talk about,

:11:21.:11:29.

to start with. Bradford City are off to Wembley

:11:30.:11:38.

for the third time in four years! They held Fleetwood to a 0-0 draw

:11:39.:11:41.

last night, which was enough to see them through to the League One

:11:42.:11:44.

play-off final, having 90 minutes from Wembley

:11:45.:11:47.

and every opportunity There was only space for 700

:11:48.:11:52.

or so Bradford fans at Fleetwood, On the pitch, Bradford

comfortable, and with 19 minutes up, it was celebration time -

:12:14.:12:19.

a draw good enough after Bradford It was always going to be

:12:20.:12:22.

a scrappy, tight game. We limited them to very little,

:12:23.:12:28.

and created more chances. There were some

:12:29.:12:35.

outstanding individuals, but, in the end, as it

:12:36.:12:36.

had been all season, we're a team, and, as they say,

:12:37.:12:40.

we will be ready once And they will take on Millwall

:12:41.:12:43.

in the League One play-off final, the team that beat them at this

:12:44.:12:47.

stage last season. On our way, now, aren't we?

:12:48.:12:49.

On our way. Ecstatic!

:12:50.:12:52.

Absolutely ecstatic! My wife won't like it

:12:53.:12:55.

but I'm going anyway. We got to the cup final, we didn't

:12:56.:12:59.

win, but we are going to Wembley and back to the championship.

for heights, then turn away now! I am OK if I look forward but if I

am on a high wire then I could not look down.

That's because the UK's highest climbing wall -

:16:09.:16:10.

It's taller than the Tower of London and the Angel of the North.

:16:11.:16:14.

Just 18 months ago it was under eight foot of water,

:16:15.:16:17.

but now this former grain silo is looking to be the best

:16:18.:16:20.

It will soon be training the athletes of the future.

:16:21.:16:27.

We sent our intrepid reporter Charlotte Leeming,

:16:28.:16:29.

and our even braver cameraman Gareth Trow, along to to

:16:30.:16:32.

It is a tall and terrifying tower on the side of an old grain silo in

North, 136 metres. Designed to attract seasoned professionals and

daredevil amateurs, and as someone who has never climb before I am the

latter. I thought I had a head for heights but it is difficult on the

upper body. Let's keep going as far as we can.

:17:09.:17:18.

Go on, push yourself. Stand up. Trust yourself.

:17:19.:17:20.

The wall is the brainchild of you admit noble who took up climbing at

:17:21.:17:26.

40 years old. He loved it so much he opened a climbing centre and bought

:17:27.:17:29.

this part would make an epic challenge. He was not wrong. What

:17:30.:17:35.

possessed you to build this? A love of climbing. I got into it

:17:36.:17:40.

late in life, and some of these silos, I saw them nine years ago and

:17:41.:17:45.

thought, wow, it would be great to claim on the face of this are inside

:17:46.:17:49.

it even. This is iconic. And the biggest in the country, so crazy not

:17:50.:17:55.

to climb on them. You feel wonderful. It is my first

:17:56.:18:00.

time claiming here, and I do not think we are even halfway up, but we

:18:01.:18:03.

are trying. You must keep climbing with your

:18:04.:18:07.

likes and drive and not let your mind takeover.

:18:08.:18:12.

My mind has taken over. But I know I am in safe hands. Luke Murphy in the

Climbing for the Olympics in the first time in 2020, this climbing

:18:22.:18:24.

wall could help to breed champions. A big step climbing, which has

:18:25.:18:30.

always been a hippy dippy sports... It is good it is taking a more

:18:31.:18:35.

serious turn, but still fun for everyone.

:18:36.:18:39.

I'm not sure about fun, for mere mortals like me it is an achievement

:18:40.:18:43.

to overcome beer and tiredness and get to the top. We made it! Thank

:18:44.:18:49.

you! -- to overcome the air and tiredness. Now the easy bit, getting

:18:50.:18:55.

down. Well done.

:18:56.:18:58.

Now, our next guest has enchanted people around the world

:18:59.:19:00.

with her singing voice after a video of her joining in with a busker went

Jade Helliwell was on a night out with friends in Leeds

when they encouraged her to sing a song with the busker.

:19:08.:19:10.

Jade joins us in the studio now, but first let's

:19:14.:19:19.

# The baffled king composing Hallelujah...

:19:20.:19:37.

# Hallelujah Hallelujah

:19:38.:19:45.

That really is something. That is lovely. If my friends asked me to

:19:46.:20:08.

sing with a busker, I would tell them to sling their work. What was

:20:09.:20:12.

going through your mind? We had been out earlier in the

:20:13.:20:15.

afternoon, so that may have helped persuade me... But yes, I have been

:20:16.:20:21.

singing for years, so when we saw the busker playing, we listen to him

:20:22.:20:25.

and got talking to him, and my friend was like, let her sing a song

:20:26.:20:28.

with you. He was reluctant at first and then he let me join in.

:20:29.:20:33.

What have the last eight days been like?

:20:34.:20:36.

Crazy. It has been the maddest week of my life, but really good.

:20:37.:20:41.

I can sing that song, but not in the same key. Your EP went into the

:20:42.:20:46.

chart, just behind Ed shearer and's album. What was the background?

:20:47.:20:51.

I released the EP back in October and it charted at number two in the

:20:52.:20:54.

iTunes country charts at number 47 in the iTunes album charts, and with

:20:55.:21:00.

the attention this week from the video, the EP went back into the

:21:01.:21:03.

charts and went to number one in the country charts at number eight in

:21:04.:21:08.

the album charts. It has been crazy. You should be on one of these, sort,

:21:09.:21:12.

talent shows, shouldn't you? Would you fancy doing that?

:21:13.:21:18.

I got some messages asking me to go on Britain's Talent, I personally I

:21:19.:21:23.

don't think that sort of thing is the right choice for me.

:21:24.:21:27.

You have been singing for a long time.

:21:28.:21:29.

I started at about 11 years old... Some years ago.

:21:30.:21:34.

This is the EP? Yes, this is a song from the EP, a

:21:35.:21:39.

studio video of us performing the songs.

:21:40.:21:44.

I would ask about the busker... He was pretty good. What will happen as

:21:45.:21:47.

far as that is concerned? I have been in touch with him, and

:21:48.:21:53.

we have decided that like I am putting together a gig on the 18th

:21:54.:21:59.

of June, at the Warehouse 23 in Wakefield, tickets go on sale this

:22:00.:22:02.

Friday at ten o'clock, and I invited him to play a spot at the gate, and

:22:03.:22:08.

we might be able to join forces. Immediately, more immediately, what

:22:09.:22:12.

do you hope to do? As of today, I announced I signed up

:22:13.:22:15.

with a management company, so I will be going to London this week and

:22:16.:22:19.

setting up some meetings, so fingers crossed things will keep going.

:22:20.:22:24.

With a voice like that... Lovely to talk to you.

:22:25.:22:26.

Congratulations. Thanks for having me.

:22:27.:22:28.

You may think all eyes are on the General Election,

:22:29.:22:31.

but here at Look North we've got another poll in our sights.

:22:32.:22:34.

Yes, the Radio Times is running a public vote on who's your

:22:35.:22:37.

The list's been nominated by viewers, and so far three

:22:38.:22:40.

of Look North's weather forecasters have made the top 15 -

:22:41.:22:43.

But the big question is, how are they doing?

:22:44.:22:49.

Competition is very stormy, with 55 names nominated so far.

:22:50.:22:54.

Heavyweights on that include Michael Fish,

:22:55.:22:56.

Ulrika Jonsson - she did the weather -

:22:57.:23:00.

But the runaway leader so far is Thomas Schafernaker, pin-up boy,

:23:01.:23:06.

The girl next door Carol Kirkwood is next in line, with nearly 6%,

:23:07.:23:13.

but, listen to this, chasing her tail is our own

:23:14.:23:16.

Owain Wyn Evans in fifth place with 3.7%.

:23:17.:23:19.

Keeley - oh, lovely Keeley - is in sixth place with 2.2%.

:23:20.:23:23.

I'm sorry to tell you that so far he is unlucky 13th

:23:24.:23:29.

I will tell you something... Do I get my deposit back?

:23:30.:23:47.

You will get my vote. You said I would get your boat. I

:23:48.:23:52.

voted for you 385 times and you are still 13.

:23:53.:23:56.

I am not paying for dinner again. Let me show you some pictures that

:23:57.:24:00.

came on in the last 24 hours, stupendous. What is that look like?

:24:01.:24:05.

It looks like Concorde. That is a rare cloud that developed

:24:06.:24:10.

of the top of this place, a type of lenticular cloud sat in the sky. Can

:24:11.:24:13.

you imagine what that must have looked like as people drove up the

:24:14.:24:17.

bail? Phenomenal. That is worth a boat just by that.

:24:18.:24:23.

I believe you are correct. Let's put this one to bed. That is the

:24:24.:24:27.

reservoir. All the top and hype in the media about potential water

:24:28.:24:31.

shortages, but not a chance in Yorkshire. An 18 month cycle, and if

:24:32.:24:34.

we had problems would be later in the year and into next year. We can

:24:35.:24:38.

put that one to bed. It has been very dry, but there are no problems

:24:39.:24:44.

in Yorkshire regarding water supplies. Contacts, if you want to

:24:45.:24:49.

send any more magnificent pictures in, BBC .co .uk/ Weather Watchers.

:24:50.:24:54.

Or you can go on Twitter or Instagram. The picture on Twitter of

:24:55.:24:59.

Concord if you want to have a look. Cloudy with sunny intervals over the

:25:00.:25:03.

next 24 hours, high-pressure remains over the acts well, bad weather over

:25:04.:25:07.

Spain and Portugal, not for the first time, but movement was the end

:25:08.:25:10.

of the week Coleraine pushing up from the south-west. An unsettled

:25:11.:25:14.

weekend may well follow. No certainties but there could be some

:25:15.:25:18.

rain around for the parched gardens. A stiff northerly breeze today

:25:19.:25:21.

brought cloud in from the North Sea, ready way to the cause of the day,

:25:22.:25:25.

more rain in Scarborough and Whitney. We keep a of cloud through

:25:26.:25:30.

the evening and overnight. Perhaps the odd light shower, but

:25:31.:25:33.

effectively it is dry, and the wind will slowly ease and we will see

:25:34.:25:39.

temperatures coming in at around about five Celsius in Skipton,

:25:40.:25:44.

elsewhere seven Celsius. That is 45 Fahrenheit. The sun rises in the

:25:45.:25:49.

morning at around six or 5am. Next I watch a time there are... -- high

:25:50.:25:56.

water times. You should else, Peak District breaks first thing, the

:25:57.:25:59.

wind will largely die away into the afternoon. It feels more pleasant

:26:00.:26:03.

than today. I'm sure there will be some breaks but it could be tomorrow

:26:04.:26:06.

evening seeing the best of the breaks with some sunshine. Let's

:26:07.:26:10.

look at the top averages. Still chilly along the coast at eight or

:26:11.:26:14.

nine Celsius. Glad when you get rid of the north-easterly wind in

:26:15.:26:18.

Scarborough, but inland we are looking at 13 Celsius. Numerically

:26:19.:26:20.

not different from Edward today but very little rain so it should feel

:26:21.:26:27.

more pleasant. Somewhat warmer on Wednesday and Thursday, all parts

:26:28.:26:31.

will be dry with some sunshine, and Wednesday in particular looks lovely

:26:32.:26:35.

at 16 Celsius or possibly 17 Celsius with a light breeze. South-easterly

:26:36.:26:39.

wind on Thursday, important because of the weather front, governing self

:26:40.:26:42.

and a risk of useful rain particularly later on Friday.

:26:43.:26:49.

An award-winning forecast. You get my vote.

:26:50.:26:52.

If we don't get a 2% we lose our deposit.

:26:53.:26:54.

Who would you vote for as a weather presenter?

:26:55.:26:59.

Thomas. Harry voted for bird board.

:27:00.:27:02.

See tomorrow. The choice you now face is all about

:27:03.:27:43.

the future.

:27:44.:27:48.
