Don't forget to join me for a detailed updated forecast, hncluding | :00:00. | :00:00.
a look at the coming weekend. But in a few minutes. | :00:00. | :00:07.
A family have spoken about their distress | :00:08. | :00:11.
at the way their mother was treated in her dying moments. | :00:12. | :00:13.
An internal investigation is underway at Harrogate Hospital | :00:14. | :00:16.
after Irene Simister was moved twice in the last half hour of her life. | :00:17. | :00:20.
The hospital has now apologhsed as Cathy Killick reports. | :00:21. | :00:29.
It's just five days since the death of his mother Irene, | :00:30. | :00:33.
and David Simister is at her flat to start sorting out her affairs. | :00:34. | :00:37.
His grief is still very raw and it's compounded by the man | :00:38. | :00:40.
of his mother's death at Harrogate Hospital. | :00:41. | :00:44.
In her dying moments, a clinical bed manager insisted | :00:45. | :00:47.
Irene was moved to make way for another patient. | :00:48. | :00:50.
It was very upsetting because we had prepared ourselves for our lother | :00:51. | :00:52.
to pass away in the room shd had been in for almost a week. | :00:53. | :00:56.
She had cards from well-wishers there. | :00:57. | :01:00.
She had flowers, and she had a photograph of her and my father | :01:01. | :01:04.
on their wedding day on the table in front of her. | :01:05. | :01:06.
In the melee that was to get her into this other room for her death, | :01:07. | :01:10.
Some other stuff was left in the corridor. | :01:11. | :01:14.
We were left with our mother dead in another room | :01:15. | :01:17.
What was the reaction of the nurses when they werd told | :01:18. | :01:23.
It was very clear that they were doing it under sufference. | :01:24. | :01:29.
When my mother did die, the nurses were crying. | :01:30. | :01:32.
These are nurses who see death on a daily basis | :01:33. | :01:34.
But they weren't used to this particular death. | :01:35. | :01:39.
Irene's family had been impressed by the care that hospital g`ve | :01:40. | :01:41.
their mother until her last half-hour. | :01:42. | :01:43.
But those highly emotional and precious final minutes | :01:44. | :01:46.
are, for them, forever tainted by what happened. | :01:47. | :01:51.
The hospital has apologised for moving her. | :01:52. | :01:53.
I want to ensure that what happened to my mother and what myself | :01:54. | :02:13.
and my family are experienchng does not happen to anybody else. | :02:14. | :02:16.
End of life care which we dhdn't experience in the last moment | :02:17. | :02:28.
For David, that means seeing protocols established to ensure | :02:29. | :02:36.
dying patients aren't moved in future. | :02:37. | :02:38.
So they're granted the dignhty of dying in peace. | :02:39. | :02:43.
Well, Toby Scott is from the Dying Matters Coalition, | :02:44. | :02:45.
a charity which aims to help people to become more comfortable | :02:46. | :02:48.
How does he think the end of someone's life should be managed? | :02:49. | :02:55.
The best way for someone's and of life care is for thel to get | :02:56. | :02:58.
the care that they previously expressed a wish to receive. | :02:59. | :03:00.
Or if they're still consciots, to get what they're asking | :03:01. | :03:03.
What that means in practice is people looking for a space | :03:04. | :03:11.
that's calm, that's comfort`ble that's not flustering for ehther | :03:12. | :03:15.
the patient the individual concerned, or their family. | :03:16. | :03:16.
Is that achievable in a hospital, or is it better | :03:17. | :03:19.
You can receive excellent care in all places. | :03:20. | :03:25.
Most of the time, hospitals are providing absolutely | :03:26. | :03:27.
Even under the constraints that the NHS is operating under | :03:28. | :03:33.
But within that average, there are examples of where the care | :03:34. | :03:35.
dips below what you would w`nt and you don't get the end of life | :03:36. | :03:39.
That concerns us as an organisation and I think it concerns | :03:40. | :03:42.
We all of us deserve first-class end of life card. | :03:43. | :03:46.
The challenge is making sure that it happens. | :03:47. | :03:51.
You say that we know how to deliver it, but is there enough trahning | :03:52. | :03:55.
for staff in hospitals on how to do the best practice? | :03:56. | :03:57.
The interesting thing is that the front-line staff have | :03:58. | :04:00.
usually got sufficient training and are doing an excellent job, | :04:01. | :04:03.
A lot of the time it might be an issue for other members of staff. | :04:04. | :04:11.
We are part of the group that is pushing what's calldd | :04:12. | :04:15.
the ambitions framework and one of the parts of that is the phrase | :04:16. | :04:18.
The idea is that anyone involved in end of life care is responsible | :04:19. | :04:25.
for each individual's quality of end of life care. | :04:26. | :04:27.
It might be someone who's got nothing to do with that indhvidual | :04:28. | :04:31.
on a day-to-day basis, yet an action they take or fail | :04:32. | :04:34.
to take might have a big impact on the care received. | :04:35. | :04:37.
What should relatives look out for when it gets to this st`ge? | :04:38. | :04:40.
Quite often it's a taboo subject, death in our country. | :04:41. | :04:42.
But what should relatives ask for when a loved one is reaching | :04:43. | :04:45.
A good early conversation with medical staff in terms | :04:46. | :04:52.
of what care is being provided, what the signs might be. | :04:53. | :04:55.
We published a resource on our website called | :04:56. | :04:57.
What To Look For When Someone You Care For Is Dying. | :04:58. | :05:00.
It talks you through the different physical changes you can expect | :05:01. | :05:03.
Which can often be unsettling for the family. | :05:04. | :05:07.
Most of the time, those physical changes and causing any discomfort. | :05:08. | :05:10.
Talk to the doctors and nurses, have them explain what's happening | :05:11. | :05:18.
so that you understand and the family understands | :05:19. | :05:20.
and the person who is nearing the end of their life understands | :05:21. | :05:22.
Very briefly, if there's ond thing that makes all the difference, | :05:23. | :05:27.
The one thing we can do as individuals that make | :05:28. | :05:32.
a difference is actually have conversations, think for ourselves, | :05:33. | :05:34.
have conversations with the family about what care we | :05:35. | :05:36.
Where would we like to be when we die. | :05:37. | :05:40.
What would want to receive `nd what would we not want to receivd. | :05:41. | :05:43.
If we've have those convers`tions and written those thoughts down it | :05:44. | :05:45.
makes the whole process easher for everyone because then pdople | :05:46. | :05:48.
Thank you very much for joining us this evening. | :05:49. | :05:51.
In the rest of the day's news, an eight-year-old girl | :05:52. | :05:55.
and her father have died in a house fire in Wakefield. | :05:56. | :05:58.
The girl's mother and sister were treated in hospital, | :05:59. | :06:00.
Police and fire services ard investigating how the fire started. | :06:01. | :06:04.
Flowers outside the house where a father and his young daughter died | :06:05. | :06:09.
Neighbours tried to rescue the family when the fire broke out | :06:10. | :06:16.
My mum looked out the bedroom window and just saw the house | :06:17. | :06:20.
How my mum described it, it was like seeing | :06:21. | :06:24.
My dad came out and tried to get people out alive. | :06:25. | :06:33.
As he's gone to go into the house, he was too scared to open the door | :06:34. | :06:40.
He was scared he was going to make it worse. | :06:41. | :06:46.
Her 35-year-old mother and a 13-year-old sister | :06:47. | :06:52.
were taken to hospital, but their injuries | :06:53. | :06:54.
They've been released and are now being looked after by relathves | :06:55. | :06:59.
They never did anything wrong to anyone. | :07:00. | :07:04.
The little girl, I used to go around when she was younger. | :07:05. | :07:11.
The and Fire Service are still investigating | :07:12. | :07:14.
exactly what happened here, trying to establish the cause | :07:15. | :07:17.
They're asking anyone who lhves locally and may have | :07:18. | :07:21.
Two West Yorkshire MPs have been given new roles | :07:22. | :07:30.
The Pontefract, Castleford and Normanton MP Yvette Cooper | :07:31. | :07:34.
will chair the Home Affairs select committee following the reshgnation | :07:35. | :07:37.
of Keith Vaz and Leeds Central MP Hilary Benn is becoming chahrman | :07:38. | :07:40.
Mr Benn campaigned for Brit`in to stay in the European Union. | :07:41. | :07:48.
Final preparations are underway ahead of the opening | :07:49. | :07:51.
of a new ?165 million shopphng centre in Leeds. | :07:52. | :07:54.
Victoria Gate and its flagship store, John Lewis, have takdn | :07:55. | :07:57.
They open to the public for the first time tomorrow | :07:58. | :08:02.
and thousands of people are expected through the doors. | :08:03. | :08:05.
Some sad news now, and the former Leeds United and Wales goalkeeper, | :08:06. | :08:11.
Gary Sprake, has died at the age of 71. | :08:12. | :08:13.
He played more than 500 times for Leeds, winning | :08:14. | :08:16.
A year earlier, he made this brilliant save to help the team win | :08:17. | :08:22.
As a mark of respect, the club say they'll hold a minute's | :08:23. | :08:27.
applause before next Tuesdax's home match against Norwich City. | :08:28. | :08:33.
Rotherham United have sacked their manager Alan Stubbs | :08:34. | :08:37.
after less than five months in charge. | :08:38. | :08:42.
The former Everton defender has managed only one win | :08:43. | :08:45.
in the Championship this se`son and Rotherham are bottom | :08:46. | :08:47.
And in tonight's football, Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-0 | :08:48. | :08:53.
at Cardiff, while Huddersfidld lost 3-1 at Preston. | :08:54. | :08:55.
Still feeling warm for this time of year. | :08:56. | :08:57.
North easterly winds continted to dominate our weather. | :08:58. | :09:04.
Quite an unusual pattern for October. | :09:05. | :09:06.
It should be west to south-westerly winds, but we have east | :09:07. | :09:08.
to north-easterly winds for a good few days yet. | :09:09. | :09:11.
A ridge of high pressure developing on Friday. | :09:12. | :09:14.
There could be a frost at fhrst light on Friday morning. | :09:15. | :09:17.
Friday looks to be a nice d`y but over the weekend we pull | :09:18. | :09:20.
Right now we have one or two showers showing up on the radar picture | :09:21. | :09:27.
We will see lower temperatures tonight down to 5-6 Celsius rurally. | :09:28. | :09:36.
9-10 Celsius is the low in towns and cities. | :09:37. | :09:39.
Thursday looks set to be a fairly pleasant day. | :09:40. | :09:45.
Quite windy along the coast, especially at first. | :09:46. | :09:47.
The emphasis is on a good ddal of fine weather tomorrow | :09:48. | :09:56.
Top temperatures coming in a 12-13 Celsius. | :09:57. | :10:02.
Tomorrow evening and tomorrow night, the showers will die away. | :10:03. | :10:08.
Most places become dry with clear periods. | :10:09. | :10:14.
There is likely to be a widespread frost. | :10:15. | :10:16.
That leaves Friday looking very nice. | :10:17. | :10:18.
The weekend is back to variable cloud with sunshind | :10:19. | :10:22.
that cool breeze to factor in. Here is Matt with the national outlook. | :10:23. | :10:47.
Good evening. Just as the weather starts to quieten down across many | :10:48. | :10:51.
parts of the country it notched up a gear across the east coast today. | :10:52. | :10:54.
Near gale force winds whipping up rough seas for our weather watchers | :10:55. | :11:00.
in north Yorkshire and in Norfolk. Low pressure across the North Sea, | :11:01. | :11:04.
still in place tonight bringing gusty winds down the east coast and | :11:05. | :11:08.
showers as well. Away from that most will be dry. An isolated shower down | :11:09. | :11:12.
to west Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly but it's high pressure in | :11:13. | :11:16.
charge in the west. Lighter winds and clearer skies and coldest of the | :11:17. | :11:22.
conditions. A night to snuggle down under the duvet. Frost-free to the | :11:23. | :11:26.
east of England. The breeze will still be there in the morning. One | :11:27. | :11:30.
or two showers on the coast. Most will get away with a dry morning | :11:31. | :11:33.
commute. Sunniest weather to the west. Again a touch of frost here. | :11:34. | :11:36.
One or two mist and fog patches Greater chance of frost to start the | :11:37. | :11:39.
day in Scotland and Northern Ireland where some of the mist and fog | :11:40. | :11:42.
patches will last | :11:43. | :11:44. |
