Good evening from Look North. a towering PR disaster. | :00:12. | :00:12.
The family of a man, who was killed by | :00:13. | :00:14.
a South Yorkshire Police horse 16 years ago, | :00:15. | :00:16.
are calling for a fresh inquiry into his death. | :00:17. | :00:18.
was trampled on before a match in Rotherham. | :00:19. | :00:23.
but the footage wasn't shown at the inquest into Terry's death. | :00:24. | :00:28.
His widow has spoken to the BBC's Inside Out. | :00:29. | :00:30.
Terry Coles, a father and a football fan | :00:31. | :00:36.
who lost his life following his team. | :00:37. | :00:39.
at the side of Rotherham's old Millmoor ground. | :00:40. | :00:43.
There was trouble. Fans were throwing stones. | :00:44. | :00:47.
Alan Roberts was another Swansea supporter there that day. | :00:48. | :00:49.
16 years on, this is the first time he's been back, | :00:50. | :00:52.
the first time he's spoken about what he saw. | :00:53. | :00:57.
You could tell by the policd officer's body language. | :00:58. | :00:59.
He spotted something, he saw something | :01:00. | :01:00.
You know, the horse geed up, I do not know what term | :01:01. | :01:06.
they use, the horse term, but the horse went faster. | :01:07. | :01:09.
You know, he only took a couple of strides | :01:10. | :01:11.
and, as I was turning back to see where the police officer was, | :01:12. | :01:14.
The inquest jury declared Terry Coles' death was an accident, | :01:15. | :01:18.
but Alan Roberts was never called to give evidence in person | :01:19. | :01:21.
and, even more surprisingly, the whole incident | :01:22. | :01:22.
but that was never shown to the jury. | :01:23. | :01:29.
I actually viewed the tape and, to this day, I'd definhtely | :01:30. | :01:31.
say that the horse went directly into his path. | :01:32. | :01:33.
A review by the Independent Police Complaints Commission | :01:34. | :01:35.
heavily criticised three officers, including the horse rider, | :01:36. | :01:37.
PC Dave Lindsay, here leaving the inquest. | :01:38. | :01:42.
One of the match commanders, Superintendent Dave Turner, | :01:43. | :01:44.
was given a written warning, but his colleague, | :01:45. | :01:47.
Chief Inspector Paul Croplex, and PC Lindsay, had retired by then, | :01:48. | :01:50.
The family recently discovered that two of thosd | :01:51. | :01:56.
officers had been involved in the Hillsborough disaster. | :01:57. | :01:59.
Both those officers, Dave Lindsay and Paul Cropldy, gave | :02:00. | :02:02.
statements after the Hillsborough disaster, talking about fans | :02:03. | :02:05.
who were drunk and who didn't have tickets. | :02:06. | :02:09.
Now, that's the narrative that's been rejected twice. | :02:10. | :02:11.
First by Lord Justice Taylor's inquiry in 1989 and again | :02:12. | :02:15.
by the fresh Hillsborough inquests that finished earlier this xear | :02:16. | :02:20.
South Yorkshire Police told us they're now working | :02:21. | :02:22.
to gain a better understandhng of their concerns. | :02:23. | :02:27.
It seems the force is still weighed down by the mistakes of its past. | :02:28. | :02:31.
Dan Johnson, BBC Look North, Rotherham. | :02:32. | :02:36.
A 23-year-old motorist, who paralysed himself and khlled | :02:37. | :02:38.
two of his passengers while racing on roads in West Yorkshire, | :02:39. | :02:41.
Another of Thomas McMeekin's passengers was also paralysdd. | :02:42. | :02:47.
Our crime correspondent John Cundy reports. | :02:48. | :02:51.
Wheelchair-bound Thomas McMdekin will probably be paralysed | :02:52. | :02:54.
for the rest of his life, btt today, he was still jailed for 7.5 years | :02:55. | :02:59.
for what was called his "lunatic driving" which killed | :03:00. | :03:02.
two of his passengers in a road disaster last year. | :03:03. | :03:06.
Motorists Thomas McMeekin bragged he could offer lifts | :03:07. | :03:08.
He'd show off to children, doing dangerous high-speed | :03:09. | :03:14.
But on that Saturday in March last year, McMeekin lost control | :03:15. | :03:20.
of his car and smashed into this tree at the side of the A62, | :03:21. | :03:25.
Rhys Baker and George Wharton, both 14, were killed. | :03:26. | :03:31.
Two other teenage boy passengers suffered life-changing disabilities, | :03:32. | :03:35.
Thomas McMeekin had been warned by his mother and other children | :03:36. | :03:43.
to stop his dangerous driving in the days before the tragddy. | :03:44. | :03:47.
This was, to use that clichd, an accident waiting to happdn. | :03:48. | :03:52.
And tragically, it did happdn on that fateful day. | :03:53. | :03:55.
Two boys lost their lives and two others were seriously injured | :03:56. | :03:58.
and McMeekin now has receivdd the justice of the court. | :03:59. | :04:03.
They are disappointed with the sentence | :04:04. | :04:05.
They were obviously aware of the injuries that Mr McMdekin | :04:06. | :04:10.
sustained in the accident, but feel the sentence is low, | :04:11. | :04:12.
given the devastation that was caused to four famhlies | :04:13. | :04:14.
The community in Morley werd united in grief after last year's tragedy. | :04:15. | :04:20.
Hundreds attended a vigil for the victims. | :04:21. | :04:23.
The judge told Thomas McMeekin that, but for his own self-inflicted | :04:24. | :04:26.
injuries, his sentence of 7.5 years jail, for causing the tragic deaths | :04:27. | :04:31.
of Rhys Baker and George Wh`rton, could have been even longer. | :04:32. | :04:37.
The family of a father and daughter who died in a house fire | :04:38. | :04:43.
in Wakefield have returned to the scene. | :04:44. | :04:45.
Police believe the fire that killed eight-year-old | :04:46. | :04:47.
Kierra Broadhead and her dad Andrew was started deliberately. | :04:48. | :04:50.
They launched a murder investigation yesterday. | :04:51. | :04:53.
Kierra's sister and mother, who escaped the fire, | :04:54. | :04:55.
looked at floral tributes outside their home. | :04:56. | :04:57.
In a statement, they said they were "devastated" and thanked | :04:58. | :05:00.
Labour has held the West Yorkshire seat of Batley and Spen | :05:01. | :05:07.
after the death of MP Jo Cox led to a by-election. | :05:08. | :05:10.
Former Coronation Street actress, Tracy Brabin, | :05:11. | :05:12.
The Conservatives, Lib Dems, and Ukip decided | :05:13. | :05:18.
not to put up candidates in the contest as a mark of respect, | :05:19. | :05:22.
but several fringe parties took part. | :05:23. | :05:26.
The Herd of Sheffield - 58 individually designed eldphants, | :05:27. | :05:28.
which have been dotted around the city since July - | :05:29. | :05:31.
were auctioned off last night at The Crucible. | :05:32. | :05:34.
They raised just over ?400,000 for the Children's Hospital Charity. | :05:35. | :05:37.
It'll be using the money to provide new life saving equipment. | :05:38. | :05:43.
I cycle to work and, every day when I cycled | :05:44. | :05:46.
to work when they were out, you'd just see clusters | :05:47. | :05:48.
I also used to check them for damage as well. | :05:49. | :05:53.
But yeah, it's just brilliant and then, when you go out in town, | :05:54. | :05:55.
and you see families ticking them off on sheets, | :05:56. | :05:57.
and then they're off to the next one, | :05:58. | :05:59.
yeah, it's been just really inspiring. | :06:00. | :06:06.
Every home should have won. Now for a look at the weather. How hs it | :06:07. | :06:10.
looking? Not bad, more sunshine than today. | :06:11. | :06:19.
Some showers but a good deal of dry and bright weather as well. High | :06:20. | :06:26.
still dominating, one blip by the middle of next week, low prdssure | :06:27. | :06:29.
pushing in and becoming settled again towards the end of next week. | :06:30. | :06:35.
-- high pressure dominating. Some showers pushing in from the east | :06:36. | :06:39.
right now, moving westwards through the night, some mist in rur`l spots, | :06:40. | :06:44.
and temperatures lower in the countryside. Cool and potentially | :06:45. | :06:51.
misty start tomorrow, dry and bright weather, just a few light showers | :06:52. | :06:56.
from the East. More likely to catch them in the afternoon and e`stern | :06:57. | :07:00.
areas favoured for this but a lot of dry and fine weather, temperatures | :07:01. | :07:06.
around 11 or 12 degrees, decent weather if you wrap up warm. Sunday | :07:07. | :07:11.
will feel cooler because thd grease will be fresher. The weekend | :07:12. | :07:16.
overall, light showers, takdn on Bella, although you might not need | :07:17. | :07:22.
it, dry and usable weather. -- take your umbrella. Frosty start on | :07:23. | :07:29.
Monday, and the potential for some thrust after | :07:30. | :07:31. |
