Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Armed police on the streets of Yorkshire as security | :00:07. | :00:09.
is stepped up in the wake of the London terror attack. | :00:10. | :00:12.
And 29 people are charged with serious sex offences | :00:13. | :00:15.
Some fine, dry and sunny weather over the next couple of days. I will | :00:16. | :00:26.
be back later in the programme with a look ahead to the weekend. | :00:27. | :00:33.
Policing across Yorkshire has been stepped up following yesterday's | :00:34. | :00:37.
terrorist attack at Westminster in which five people died | :00:38. | :00:42.
There are more armed officers on the streets | :00:43. | :00:45.
at railway stations, shopping centres and | :00:46. | :00:47.
Our Home Affairs Correspondent Spencer Stokes reports. | :00:48. | :00:49.
200 miles north of Westminster, are very visible sign that | :00:50. | :00:54.
200 miles north of Westminster, a very visible sign that | :00:55. | :00:56.
what happened at Parliament yesterday has had repercussions | :00:57. | :00:58.
Armed police on patrol across West Yorkshire and a general | :00:59. | :01:02.
increase in the number of uniformed officers mingling with the public. | :01:03. | :01:04.
Only to make clear there is no intelligence around and | :01:05. | :01:08.
We know the security levels nationally have been at high | :01:09. | :01:13.
That hasn't changed, but I think it's right in the wake | :01:14. | :01:23.
of such a tragic incident that we provide that reassurance. | :01:24. | :01:25.
In Bradford, hints that here too, security has been beefed up. | :01:26. | :01:28.
It does benefit people more, them putting on extra control | :01:29. | :01:36.
I think it's important to have a safer environment | :01:37. | :01:40.
I think that's really important and a good thing. | :01:41. | :01:46.
So I think it's quite positive, yeah. | :01:47. | :01:48.
Yesterday's incident was startlingly simple. | :01:49. | :01:52.
A vehicle driven into pedestrians before PC Keith Palmer was stabbed | :01:53. | :01:55.
to death by 52-year-old Khalid Masood. | :01:56. | :02:01.
But that simplicity had been foreseen. | :02:02. | :02:05.
Just two weeks ago the head of counterterror for Yorkshire | :02:06. | :02:09.
and the North East warned of possible dangers. | :02:10. | :02:11.
Our threat level has been assessed as severe, | :02:12. | :02:13.
which means an attack is highly likely at any time. | :02:14. | :02:16.
When we think about what has happened in mainland Europe over | :02:17. | :02:18.
the last few months in terms of the horrific attacks with the use | :02:19. | :02:21.
of HGVs and knife attacks in Germany and France etc, | :02:22. | :02:27.
it is much broader than someone leaving a suspicious package | :02:28. | :02:31.
on public transport or something of that nature. | :02:32. | :02:35.
The authorities have been preparing for the kind of terror assault | :02:36. | :02:38.
These planters in Leeds city centre actually disguise | :02:39. | :02:42.
They would make it harder for a vehicle to drive at speed | :02:43. | :02:48.
Today has also been a day to pay respects to those who died. | :02:49. | :02:56.
Flags flying at half-mast across the county and books | :02:57. | :03:00.
of condolence opened, like this one at | :03:01. | :03:03.
Inevitably, an attack fuels debate and questions have been raised | :03:04. | :03:08.
about whether police should be routinely armed. | :03:09. | :03:10.
It's certainly something we are going to have to revisit | :03:11. | :03:13.
because what we have to bear in mind is, the general public have a very | :03:14. | :03:16.
legitimate expectation that we will protect them. | :03:17. | :03:18.
So what is equally important is we protect the very people | :03:19. | :03:21.
who are expected to carry out that duty. | :03:22. | :03:26.
It's nearly 12 years since terror on this scale | :03:27. | :03:29.
claimed lives in Britain, more than a decade | :03:30. | :03:31.
But yesterday's Westminster attack will now have political, security | :03:32. | :03:36.
The Palace of Westminster was locked down for hours - | :03:37. | :03:46.
among those trapped inside most of the regions MPs, | :03:47. | :03:49.
as well as children from a school in Rotherham. | :03:50. | :03:52.
Everyone has praised the work of the emergency services | :03:53. | :03:54.
and vowed they will not allow the terrorists to prevail. | :03:55. | :03:57.
Our reporter Ali Fortescue has the latest on the reaction | :03:58. | :04:00.
It's a day that Britain won't forget and one day on, | :04:01. | :04:08.
what happened in Westminster has brought calls for unity | :04:09. | :04:10.
Across the country there's a sense of shock, there's a sense of fear, | :04:11. | :04:16.
But that the same time, we're not afraid. | :04:17. | :04:21.
We will not let these terrorists win. | :04:22. | :04:23.
We get on with it and that's not about looking after your own, | :04:24. | :04:26.
it's simply about doing what's right in difficult circumstances | :04:27. | :04:28.
For these nine and ten-year-olds from Herringthorpe Junior | :04:29. | :04:34.
School in Rotherham, it was a lucky escape. | :04:35. | :04:36.
They were on a school tour when the attack happened | :04:37. | :04:39.
and then on lockdown in the Houses of Parliament for three hours. | :04:40. | :04:43.
Today, there was a collective sigh of relief from their parents | :04:44. | :04:46.
My son has come back here and I'm very sorry for this tragedy. | :04:47. | :04:52.
It was just not knowing, not being able to speak to him. | :04:53. | :04:55.
That was the worst part of it, but it's been a restless night, | :04:56. | :04:58.
I'm just happy that he and everybody, all | :04:59. | :05:04.
We can't predict anything like this ever happening, however, | :05:05. | :05:08.
I think it is important for children to see how democracy works | :05:09. | :05:10.
For Yorkshire's MPs, the grim reality of what happened | :05:11. | :05:15.
I could hear a woman screaming that there was a man with a gun. | :05:16. | :05:20.
I somehow ran into a cupboard, there was about six others. | :05:21. | :05:23.
I believe the other members were members of the House of Lords. | :05:24. | :05:26.
I remember getting in there and just feeling absolutely terrified. | :05:27. | :05:30.
I think we are really, really struggling with the death | :05:31. | :05:33.
I think Nigel Evans said in the chamber today, | :05:34. | :05:38.
we see them let people in, we see them checking people's ID. | :05:39. | :05:41.
We also see tourists taking selfies with them, things like that. | :05:42. | :05:44.
Once again, Batley Town Hall's flag was flown at half-mast today. | :05:45. | :05:48.
This is a town that knows all too well, the devastating | :05:49. | :05:51.
Last year their MP Jo Cox was murdered in broad daylight. | :05:52. | :05:56.
Today, a message of love from her husband. | :05:57. | :05:59.
Yesterday there was one act of evil, but there were thousands of acts | :06:00. | :06:03.
of kindness and heroism, from PC Palmer, for example, | :06:04. | :06:06.
who put his life on the line and died defending people. | :06:07. | :06:12.
To the people that were helping people on the bridge. | :06:13. | :06:16.
Red, white and blue, the three colours lighting Leeds | :06:17. | :06:19.
tonight, a simple message, Yorkshire will stand up to terrorism | :06:20. | :06:21.
and will remember those who lost their lives yesterday. | :06:22. | :06:24.
In other news, West Yorkshire Police have charged 29 people with a number | :06:25. | :06:34.
The offences are alleged to have happened in the Huddersfield area | :06:35. | :06:40.
David Rhodes has sent us this report from Huddersfield. | :06:41. | :06:46.
Of the 29 people charged by West Yorkshire Police today | :06:47. | :06:49.
we know that 27 are male and two are female. | :06:50. | :06:52.
They've been charged with a range of alleged offences that supposedly | :06:53. | :06:54.
took place between the years 2004 and 2011. | :06:55. | :06:57.
West Yorkshire Police say they've been charged with rape, | :06:58. | :07:00.
sexual activity with a child, the possession and intent | :07:01. | :07:07.
to supply class A drugs, as well as child abduction | :07:08. | :07:11.
and the possession and making of indecent images of children. | :07:12. | :07:14.
We also know that there are 18 alleged victims | :07:15. | :07:19.
All of the victims were supposedly aged between the ages of 11 and 17 | :07:20. | :07:25.
and all lived in the Huddersfield area when these alleged offences | :07:26. | :07:28.
All of those charged by West Yorkshire Police will appear | :07:29. | :07:34.
at Huddersfield magistrates on the 12th of April. | :07:35. | :07:38.
A suspected burglar has died after getting trapped | :07:39. | :07:40.
Police believe the man removed roof tiles to break | :07:41. | :07:45.
into Rowlands Chemists in Queensbury near Bradford. | :07:46. | :07:48.
They're treating his death as an accident and think | :07:49. | :07:51.
he was asphyxiated after his clothing became caught. | :07:52. | :07:53.
His body is thought to have been in the roof-space for several weeks | :07:54. | :07:57.
before being discovered by members of staff. | :07:58. | :08:00.
A pregnant woman from Leeds has appeared in court in Rwanda | :08:01. | :08:03.
on charges of spreading state secrets to undermine | :08:04. | :08:05.
Violett Uwamahoro, a Rwandan-British youth worker, | :08:06. | :08:10.
Her husband, who is an opposition activist, | :08:11. | :08:16.
He and her two sons have asked the UK Government to intervene, | :08:17. | :08:20.
saying they fear the trial is fixed and cannot be fair. | :08:21. | :08:26.
NatWest has announced it's closing ten high street branches | :08:27. | :08:28.
Ten branches across the two counties will shut down by October. | :08:29. | :08:34.
NatWest says there's been a big fall in the number | :08:35. | :08:37.
of customers visiting branches, as more people choose | :08:38. | :08:39.
to do their banking online or on their mobile. | :08:40. | :08:42.
It says it's created a specialist task force to help customers | :08:43. | :08:45.
The cycling team run by Sir Bradley Wiggins says it's | :08:46. | :08:51.
"surprised and disappointed" after being excluded from next | :08:52. | :08:54.
The five-time Olympic champion, who's retired, founded the team | :08:55. | :08:59.
But it's been omitted from the race, which runs from April | :09:00. | :09:04.
Race organisers say the event was oversubscribed. | :09:05. | :09:11.
One Rugby League result to bring you. | :09:12. | :09:15.
In tonight's Super League match, it finished Wakefield Trinity 28, | :09:16. | :09:18.
Some nice spring sunshine to come over the next couple of days because | :09:19. | :09:41.
high pressure is in charge. A fine, dry day and we will enjoy some | :09:42. | :09:46.
lovely spring sunshine. As high dominate over the next few days and | :09:47. | :09:51.
into next week, but at this time of year when we have very little cloud | :09:52. | :09:55.
we may have warm sunshine during the day but by night it can be chilly. | :09:56. | :10:01.
There is the risk of some frosty nights. If you live close to the | :10:02. | :10:06.
coast, it is quite cool at this time of year so temperatures will | :10:07. | :10:10.
struggle. But in the sunshine, feeling pleasant. Little change at | :10:11. | :10:15.
the moment. Mr Cross the hills and there could be some low cloud here | :10:16. | :10:20.
as well. It is going to be a cool night, so a touch of ground frost is | :10:21. | :10:24.
possible, anywhere apart from the coast. But inland, temperatures | :10:25. | :10:30.
could dip to freezing or below. So it chilly, frosty start tomorrow. | :10:31. | :10:35.
More cloud threatening parts of South Yorkshire and the North | :10:36. | :10:40.
Midlands, but generally a fine, dry day, plenty of spring sunshine. In | :10:41. | :10:45.
the afternoon away from the cool coast, it will feel quite pleasant. | :10:46. | :10:52.
Warm in the sunshine. 11 to 13 degrees. Cooler along the coast with | :10:53. | :10:56.
the villains of the sea. Similar day on Saturday, cloud the Sunday. Here | :10:57. | :11:00.
is the part of the weekend. 1415 degrees. | :11:01. | :11:04.
Still quite breezy. Here's Thomas with the national picture. | :11:05. | :11:10.
Good evening. Some good news on the weather front of this evening. The | :11:11. | :11:15.
weekend is looking sunny for most of the UK. We have got clear skies | :11:16. | :11:19.
across the country and it promises to be a sunny day | :11:20. | :11:20. |
