Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Tonight: Research in Sheffield sheds new light on the health | :00:00. | :00:00.
And the Yorkshire mother of three guilty of a terrorism offence | :00:07. | :00:10.
after retweeting an Islamic State speech. | :00:11. | :00:20.
We have had a mild day today. It will still feel pleasant in the | :00:21. | :00:27.
sunshine. I will be back with the details later in the programme. | :00:28. | :00:33.
Smokers under the age of 50 are more than eight times | :00:34. | :00:36.
as likely as nonsmokers to suffer a major heart attack, | :00:37. | :00:40.
according to research carried out in Sheffield. | :00:41. | :00:43.
The study found that all smokers are at increased risk | :00:44. | :00:46.
but younger ones are particularly vulnerable compared to those | :00:47. | :00:49.
Our health correspondent Jamie Coulson reports. | :00:50. | :00:57.
Until a couple of months ago, Trevor Rossall thought he was fit | :00:58. | :01:00.
Despite being a smoker the 39-year-old exercise, ate | :01:01. | :01:10.
But at the end of January, he developed severe chest pains, | :01:11. | :01:15.
which turned out to be a life-threatening heart attack. | :01:16. | :01:17.
I went to hospital with severe indigestion, never for one minute | :01:18. | :01:20.
thought that it was anything other than severe indigestion. | :01:21. | :01:24.
To be told that I'd had a heart attack was very scary. | :01:25. | :01:34.
Every time you smoke, blood that's thick and dirty | :01:35. | :01:36.
with toxins circulates through your body in seconds, | :01:37. | :01:38.
increasing your chances of a heart attack. | :01:39. | :01:45.
There are plenty of warnings that make it fairly clear that smoking | :01:46. | :01:47.
is bad for your health, but now researchers have been able | :01:48. | :01:50.
to quantify exactly how much of a risk smoking has | :01:51. | :01:52.
on your chances of having a heart attack. | :01:53. | :01:57.
So, this is a left coronary angiogram... | :01:58. | :02:00.
The study, which was led by Sheffield teaching hospitals, | :02:01. | :02:04.
looked at the admission data for more than 1700 patients who had | :02:05. | :02:07.
experienced a classic type of heart attack, | :02:08. | :02:09.
where one of the major arteries becomes blocked. | :02:10. | :02:12.
The information was then compared to local populations' smoking | :02:13. | :02:16.
Research has found that smokers are more than three times | :02:17. | :02:20.
as likely as nonsmokers to have a heart attack. | :02:21. | :02:29.
But in the under 50s, who tend not to have other | :02:30. | :02:32.
contributory factors, smokers were more than | :02:33. | :02:33.
However, the risk of a heart attack in ex-smokers was similar to those | :02:34. | :02:37.
I think if you're a smoker, you're at significant risk | :02:38. | :02:41.
These heart attacks are preventable, and by abstaining you can | :02:42. | :02:48.
reduce your risk to a level similar to a nonsmoker in a relatively | :02:49. | :02:51.
Trevor has now given up smoking and is starting to rebuild | :02:52. | :02:56.
A mother-of-three who was convicted of | :02:57. | :03:04.
a terrorism offence after she re-tweeted a speech | :03:05. | :03:07.
by the Islamic State has today walked free from court. | :03:08. | :03:09.
57-year-old Mary Kaya from Batley in West Yorkshire retweeted | :03:10. | :03:17.
the link to an audio clip which the judge described | :03:18. | :03:19.
She was given a 21 month prison sentence, | :03:20. | :03:23.
Here's our Home Affairs Correspondent Spencer Stokes. | :03:24. | :03:44.
Mary Kaya, seen here on the left are arriving at court | :03:45. | :03:47.
She was found guilty earlier this month of disseminating a terrorist | :03:48. | :03:50.
publication on the social media website Twitter. | :03:51. | :03:52.
That publication was a speech written by the leader of so-called | :03:53. | :03:55.
At 6:20am on 21st October 2015, police from the north-east | :03:56. | :03:58.
counterterrorism unit burst into Mary Kaya's home | :03:59. | :04:00.
They arrested her, her husband and took her three children | :04:01. | :04:03.
Then her computer was seized to find out exactly | :04:04. | :04:07.
During the four-day long trial, the court had heard that Kaya | :04:08. | :04:11.
retweeted a link to the IS speech and that her computer had also | :04:12. | :04:14.
been used to research radical Islamic preachers, | :04:15. | :04:18.
IS supporters, people who travelled to Syria and footage of explosions. | :04:19. | :04:25.
But viewing such footage is not the same as disseminating it. | :04:26. | :04:29.
And Kaya's defence had argued she hadn't been attempting | :04:30. | :04:31.
In court, Judge Peter Collier handed down a two-year | :04:32. | :04:37.
He said, "It doesn't seem to me that you pose any danger to the public. | :04:38. | :04:42.
Immediate custody would not serve any purpose." | :04:43. | :04:49.
But he warned others who did the same in the future | :04:50. | :04:52.
And that happened in Sheffield this afternoon, when a 22-year-old woman | :04:53. | :04:56.
was sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court to 20 months in prison after | :04:57. | :05:01.
pleading guilty to disseminating terrorist material online. | :05:02. | :05:06.
In Leeds, free to go, after sentencing, Mary Kaya was told | :05:07. | :05:11.
she must continue to attend Prevent training to stop people | :05:12. | :05:13.
Spencer Stokes, BBC Look North, Leeds. | :05:14. | :05:27.
ProfessorPaul Rogers is a global expert on the so-called Islamic | :05:28. | :05:39.
State. I asked how unusual verses. It is unusual but where they -- | :05:40. | :05:43.
where do they draw the line and feel they can bring a case where there is | :05:44. | :05:49.
clear evidence of incitement. In this case they felt they could and | :05:50. | :05:53.
the end result was a custodial sentence which was put through to | :05:54. | :05:58.
suspended sentence. I suspect the evidence was not sufficiently strong | :05:59. | :06:02.
to ensure the sentence would be custodial. These are unusual cases | :06:03. | :06:07.
and there is always a problem to balance the line in whether they can | :06:08. | :06:13.
bring the case in the first place. Under what circumstances would it be | :06:14. | :06:18.
seen as encouraging terrorism? This was the second major speech of the | :06:19. | :06:25.
lead of ices. He was calling for more support but it was widely | :06:26. | :06:32.
studied and distributed. In this case, the authorities felt this was | :06:33. | :06:36.
a deliberate use of a retweeting to spread the word in terms of trying | :06:37. | :06:40.
to encourage people to take this lead. It is unusual and the end | :06:41. | :06:49.
result was almost neutral. She was sent to jail and it is now seen from | :06:50. | :06:56.
the point of view as an unusual case but not one which is unknown. Where | :06:57. | :07:02.
do we draw the line between freedom of speech and radicalisation? It is | :07:03. | :07:08.
a difficult one. The authorities are sensitive. We had the terrible | :07:09. | :07:12.
London attacks a week ago and the war on terror over which has been | :07:13. | :07:16.
going on for 15 years is no nearer to an end. The authorities are | :07:17. | :07:23.
sensitive and willing to bring cases where there has been a reasonable | :07:24. | :07:27.
chance of conviction. The people concerned with civil liberties are | :07:28. | :07:31.
worried because they think we are worried because they think we are | :07:32. | :07:36.
going too far, too often. I am not a lawyer but I am not at all sure this | :07:37. | :07:41.
balance was kept exactly right in this case. Thank you very much for | :07:42. | :07:43.
your thoughts tonight. 250 jobs could be created | :07:44. | :07:46.
at a new theme park Gullivers, who already run | :07:47. | :07:48.
a park at Matlock Bath, are behind the scheme, | :07:49. | :07:51.
which will be built on land The 250 acre development has been | :07:52. | :07:54.
given planning permission Libraries previously threatened | :07:55. | :07:58.
with closure in five North Yorkshire towns | :07:59. | :08:06.
will now be able to carry on from this weekend under | :08:07. | :08:08.
a new system called Hybrid. Volunteers will continue | :08:09. | :08:10.
to run the libraries but will have a specialist librarian | :08:11. | :08:12.
paid for by the county This evening volunteers | :08:13. | :08:15.
in Pickering, who're taking over their library, | :08:16. | :08:20.
said goodbye to three staff Residents accept it's the only way | :08:21. | :08:23.
to save a vital community service. I love the generosity of the people, | :08:24. | :08:39.
the kindness and it is a good community spirit. Take the library | :08:40. | :08:44.
away and it is scandalous. I felt very strongly about that. | :08:45. | :08:46.
A French Cold War aircraft, never before on permanent | :08:47. | :08:49.
show outside France, has arrived at Elvington | :08:50. | :08:50.
The 77 foot long Mirage nuclear bomber travelled by road | :08:51. | :08:54.
and sea in its four day journey to its new home. | :08:55. | :08:57.
It was gifted to the Yorkshire Air Museum by the French government. | :08:58. | :09:00.
It's made the journey in pieces and will be unloaded by crane before | :09:01. | :09:03.
being put back together and going on display at Elvington. | :09:04. | :09:09.
That's all from me with the news but Keeley has | :09:10. | :09:12.
We have seen 20 degrees across some sports in Yorkshire. It has not been | :09:13. | :09:25.
pleasant everywhere. There has been some damp weather across the West. | :09:26. | :09:32.
Tomorrow, we will see some sunshine. It will still feel pleasant and | :09:33. | :09:38.
temperatures above average. As we make our way through Friday, we will | :09:39. | :09:42.
see a bridge building and the showers will die away. For the | :09:43. | :09:46.
weekend, Saturday is a mix of sunshine and showers and a fine day | :09:47. | :09:52.
on Sunday. At the moment, there is a lot of cloud and we have some rain | :09:53. | :09:57.
making their way across the region. Assistant in the West and a mild | :09:58. | :09:59.
night with temperatures in double figures. Tomorrow, variable amounts | :10:00. | :10:08.
of cloud and we had patchy rain to come through the morning. That rain | :10:09. | :10:12.
will break will be a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. | :10:13. | :10:17.
You can see from the graphics that those showers ease as we had through | :10:18. | :10:23.
the afternoon. By tomorrow evening, it will feel quite pleasant. | :10:24. | :10:30.
Temperatures of around 16 Celsius which is a few degrees above | :10:31. | :10:37.
average. April the 1st of April showers. Sunny spells and a few | :10:38. | :10:41.
showers through the day. Some of those could be on the heavy side. On | :10:42. | :10:48.
Sunday, plenty of sunshine through the morning but cloud building and | :10:49. | :10:56.
it is a little bit overcast. A few showers on Friday and some sunshine | :10:57. | :10:57.
and showers for Saturday also. I time of year. The chance of a shower | :10:58. | :11:01.
on Saturday. Sunday will be dry. Hello, it will cool off over the | :11:02. | :11:13.
next few days but that's not unusual, given how warm it was | :11:14. | :11:18.
today. This was London. We just had the warmest March day since 2012, 20 | :11:19. | :11:22.
two Celsius in the Sunnis skies in the south-east. It was much warmer | :11:23. | :11:27.
than recently in north-eastern Scotland, but in between we had a | :11:28. | :11:30.
zone of outbreaks of rain. It's pretty wet in south-west Scotland | :11:31. | :11:33.
and North West England at the moment. This was the scene earlier, | :11:34. | :11:39.
with rainy skies. There's more rain to come overnight. We | :11:40. | :11:41. |
