Here, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening and welcome to the late Look North. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Nearly 300 jobs go at Nestle chocolate factories as production | :00:00. | :00:08.
And we're in the gym in Doncaster, where voters may be about to change | :00:09. | :00:14.
So you are voting Conservative for the first time to get | :00:15. | :00:20.
There are food banks opening up all over and there's no way this | :00:21. | :00:26.
government will want to help us, so we need them out. | :00:27. | :00:31.
And we saw all sorts of weather today. | :00:32. | :00:33.
First tonight, nearly 300 jobs are to go at four Nestle | :00:34. | :00:46.
In York, more than 140 posts will be lost and another | :00:47. | :00:52.
Production of the Blue Riband bar will move to Poland. | :00:53. | :00:58.
The company insists the decision is nothing to do with Brexit. | :00:59. | :01:01.
They have been making chocolate in York for generations. | :01:02. | :01:07.
Some of Nestle's best-known products are still made here, | :01:08. | :01:10.
But production of other brands moved to Spain and Bulgaria around ten | :01:11. | :01:16.
years ago and unions claim production of remaining chocolate | :01:17. | :01:19.
and confectionery has halved in the same period. | :01:20. | :01:23.
Today came news that Blue Riband will soon be made in Poland, | :01:24. | :01:27.
which could mean job losses in Newcastle. | :01:28. | :01:29.
At the same time, unions say, 143 jobs are at risk | :01:30. | :01:33.
Lots of very sombre faces here as workers have left the factory. | :01:34. | :01:40.
But people did say how shocked and disappointed they were to hear | :01:41. | :01:47.
A 45-day consultation period between Nestle, | :01:48. | :01:53.
People who quite possibly will be losing their jobs | :01:54. | :02:00.
through redundancy, they have real uncertainty as to | :02:01. | :02:03.
It's a real ageing workforce here at York and people finding jobs | :02:04. | :02:08.
in this economic climate is difficult anyway, | :02:09. | :02:12.
but when you are of a certain age, it is even more difficult. | :02:13. | :02:16.
Nestle say that these proposals are being made to ensure sites | :02:17. | :02:19.
operate more efficiently and remain competitive in a rapidly | :02:20. | :02:22.
They added they appreciate that this is an uncertain time for employees | :02:23. | :02:28.
and will work hard to ensure that all are supported through | :02:29. | :02:32.
York's MP, Rachael Maskell, says that she is concerned | :02:33. | :02:36.
about the proposals and has asked the government to intervene | :02:37. | :02:39.
to protect jobs here at the city's largest manufacturer. | :02:40. | :02:49.
A 68-year-old man from Bradford, who this morning became the second | :02:50. | :02:52.
person to be arrested over the murder of a teenage girl | :02:53. | :02:55.
from Hebden Bridge, has been released from police custody. | :02:56. | :02:58.
13-year-old Lynsey Rimer was last seen alive 23 years | :02:59. | :03:01.
Her body was found in a canal five months later. | :03:02. | :03:07.
A 63-year-old man, who was arrested in November, remains on bail. | :03:08. | :03:11.
Police say their inquiry is continuing. | :03:12. | :03:15.
Police believe drug dealers in Yorkshire are deliberately | :03:16. | :03:17.
contaminating heroin with deadly substances 10,000 times stronger | :03:18. | :03:21.
Six people died in drug-related incidents in South and West | :03:22. | :03:27.
Police have been testing batches of street drugs and say they've now | :03:28. | :03:32.
found traces of fentanil - an anaesthetic - and its much more | :03:33. | :03:36.
potent derivative carfentanil - which is used to tranquilise large | :03:37. | :03:40.
We often hear that Brexit will affect the way we vote. | :03:41. | :03:49.
And that's a big challenge for Labour here in Yorkshire. | :03:50. | :03:53.
They have 32 MPs in our region, lots in South Yorkshire and nearly | :03:54. | :03:57.
But in last year's EU referendum, almost all of them voted Remain, | :03:58. | :04:03.
whilst in 27 constituencies, voters opted to leave. | :04:04. | :04:07.
So how will this affect voting patterns now? | :04:08. | :04:10.
Emma Glasbey reports from Stainforth, near Doncaster. | :04:11. | :04:14.
At 9am, gym work-out for Aidan and Cliff. | :04:15. | :04:18.
All is quiet until you mention Theresa May. | :04:19. | :04:23.
She'll destroy the country, she will destroy this area. | :04:24. | :04:26.
There may be a low voter turnout in the Doncaster North constituency, | :04:27. | :04:31.
but there is certainly a passion for politics here. | :04:32. | :04:34.
But this is the first time you are going to vote Conservative? | :04:35. | :04:41.
It is, purely because it has been a forced election. | :04:42. | :04:45.
She has made promises and she has not had a chance to carry them out, | :04:46. | :04:48.
so she is coming back to the people to put her back in to give | :04:49. | :04:52.
her a stronger majority to get a good deal for us. | :04:53. | :04:54.
So you are voting Conservative for the first time to get | :04:55. | :04:57.
There are food banks opening up all over and there is no way this | :04:58. | :05:08.
government is going to want to help us at all so we need them out. | :05:09. | :05:11.
A former mining community, Labour have always been the winners here. | :05:12. | :05:15.
But Doncaster saw the biggest vote to leave the European Union | :05:16. | :05:18.
Many people in Stainforth are adamant Brexit must be a success. | :05:19. | :05:26.
In the local boutique, Guy and Joanna are also talking politics. | :05:27. | :05:31.
I think it would be a shame, it's like a building contractor | :05:32. | :05:50.
and then they pull out and someone else comes in. | :05:51. | :05:53.
I voted Labour all my life, I'm leaning towards Ukip. | :05:54. | :06:00.
The local MP, former Labour leader Ed Miliband, | :06:01. | :06:02.
campaigned to remain in the European Union. | :06:03. | :06:06.
But almost everyone I spoke to in Stainforth voted to leave. | :06:07. | :06:10.
I'd just recently moved up, but even I voted Leave. | :06:11. | :06:21.
Everyone I spoke to, they voted Leave. | :06:22. | :06:24.
At the heart of the community here is the library, | :06:25. | :06:31.
run by a charity with a shop and a job club. | :06:32. | :06:35.
Are you going to vote, do you always vote? | :06:36. | :06:37.
I'm one of these people that don't really understand it, | :06:38. | :06:42.
I've never, ever seen one since I've been here. | :06:43. | :06:52.
But I do think they need to come out and see and meet the real people. | :06:53. | :07:02.
This community turned out to vote on Europe, | :07:03. | :07:06.
but will those voters head back to the polls for this election? | :07:07. | :07:10.
If any politicians do decide to visit this town, | :07:11. | :07:12.
there are plenty of people who would like to talk. | :07:13. | :07:16.
Emma Glasbey, BBC Look North, Stainforth. | :07:17. | :07:20.
Labour has been unveiling its strategy for Brexit today. | :07:21. | :07:23.
Our political reporter James Vincent is here. | :07:24. | :07:29.
people? Are Labour going to convince people? Are Labour going to convince | :07:30. | :07:38.
people in Stainforth? Stainforth is exactly the type of place where they | :07:39. | :07:42.
need to convince them because it is a Labour heartland. It is a place | :07:43. | :07:47.
where people were the strongest to leave the EU. They have been | :07:48. | :07:52.
unveiling this exit strategy today. They accept that there will be an | :07:53. | :07:55.
end to freedom of movement but there has been clarification. That does | :07:56. | :08:05.
not mean no movement, they mean managed movement, people with a | :08:06. | :08:09.
concrete job offer can come to this country. And any new laws under the | :08:10. | :08:14.
Labour government might have a regional dimension. A quota for the | :08:15. | :08:17.
amount of foreigners that might be coming to Yorkshire? A balancing act | :08:18. | :08:23.
for Labour, because the love clear blue water on either side. If you | :08:24. | :08:29.
are the Lib Dems, your message is clear, you like the E. If you are | :08:30. | :08:34.
the Conservatives or you skip, then you want to get out -- or Ukip you | :08:35. | :08:41.
want to get out. There are many people who voted Labour but also | :08:42. | :08:48.
voted to leave or to remain. That is the challenge as we get closer to | :08:49. | :08:52.
the election, they will be under scrutiny as to exactly what they are | :08:53. | :08:56.
saying about Brexit and their policies. | :08:57. | :08:58.
Football, now and Huddersfield Town have secured a playoff place tonight | :08:59. | :09:01.
in their push for promotion to the Premier League. | :09:02. | :09:03.
The Terriers won 1-0 away at Wolverhampton Wanderers. | :09:04. | :09:05.
Izzy Brown got the all-important goal in the 31st minute. | :09:06. | :09:07.
It takes them up to third in the table. | :09:08. | :09:11.
In rugby league, the draw has been made for the sixth | :09:12. | :09:14.
Leeds Rhinostake on the lowest-ranked | :09:15. | :09:18.
team in the competition, Barrow Raiders. | :09:19. | :09:20.
And there's a big game for Castleford Tigers - | :09:21. | :09:22.
The matches will be played on the weekend of May 13th and 14th. | :09:23. | :09:32.
I hope the weather improves somewhat from what it has been today! | :09:33. | :09:38.
It has been all over the place and much more of the same tomorrow. Look | :09:39. | :09:46.
at the huge hailstones in this photo. We could see wintry showers | :09:47. | :09:51.
in the forecast tomorrow. That's take a quick look at the pressure | :09:52. | :09:55.
chart and hour winds of funnelling on from the North pulling in Arctic | :09:56. | :09:59.
air. But this ridge of high pressure will come in just in time for the | :10:00. | :10:05.
weekend. So the weekend is looking largely settled. This evening, some | :10:06. | :10:09.
showers, but they will start to be confined to the east Coast. Some | :10:10. | :10:17.
rain will fall asleep and snow but to the West, a clearer picture. Ice | :10:18. | :10:24.
on untreated surfaces as well. A chilly start of the day but a bright | :10:25. | :10:31.
start. On the East Coast, it will be cloudy and we will see the showers | :10:32. | :10:37.
on and off during the day. They will start to ease during the afternoon. | :10:38. | :10:48.
30 degrees is the seasonal average. -- 13 degrees. A quick look at the | :10:49. | :10:56.
outlook, some cloud and rain on Thursday that his touch milder. | :10:57. | :11:00.
Temperatures getting back to near normal in time for the weekend. | :11:01. | :11:02.
That's it from the late team. Here Good evening. Another cold night | :11:03. | :11:14.
lies ahead after what was a chilly day | :11:15. | :11:15. |
