Police in North Yorkshire say drivers distracted by gadgets

or technology while behind the wheel could face prosecution

if evidence submitted by the public is strong enough.

The force says they've received almost 100 tip offs about bad

behaviour from motorists under "Operation Spartan"

where people can report cases of anti social driving

You can easily note the registration down and some action can be taken

against them, whether it is education or enforcement.

Acting Sergeant Zoe Billings on the lookout for drivers behaving badly.

The public can submit intelligence about anti-social use of vehicles

Officers will then assess the information

The definition of vulnerable for the purpose of the investigation

will be anybody that by their behaviour on the roads

looks like they are going to cause a risk of injury to themselves

We're looking out for anyone who's driving or cycling,

riding, horse riding, anybody who uses the roads.

Anybody whose behaviour looks like it causes a bit of a risk.

Marked police vehicles tend to make drivers behave.

Officers say with the public's help, this scheme enables them to follow

up reports of aggressive motoring or illegal phone use for example.

This can be in the form of a letter, a conversation or in some

cases, if evidence is strong enough, potential prosecution.

North Yorkshire Police say this is not about turning people

into police officers, Operation Spartan is simply

about reducing the vulnerability of road users.

So far, more than 90 reports of bad driving have been submitted.

Meanwhile, the force's drink and drug driving

arrests during the run-up to Christmas, 20%

The figures are expected to rise further over the days.

A new BBC drama about the personal and home lives of the Bronte sisters

days. Tomorrow, I do not think it is going to be as foggy. There is a lot

more cloud around and it won't be as sunny. Not as cold either. New

Year's Eve, fairly mild and dry until the evening when this weather

front pushes through. If you are out and about at midnight, take your

umbrella. The Arctic blast to start a thousand and 17. We have mist and

fog developing. Some slippery services Split-mac surfaces. It will

be breezy and cloudier with Hillier parts holding onto the biggest of

the fog. Temperatures dropping down to freezing. A cloudy day tomorrow
