That's all from the BBC News at One

Welcome to Look North.
- so it's goodbye from me - | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
The main news from around
Yorkshire today... | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
Marriages of convenience -
why gay and lesbian people | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
from Yorkshire's Asian community
are marrying to avoid shame | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
from their families. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
And the pioneering treatment using
water to ease the body and the mind. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
Gay men and women from
Yorkshire's Asian community | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
are marrying each other in a bid
to avoid hostility | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
from their family and friends. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:43
A BBC investigation has found
they're using online forums to enter | 0:00:43 | 0:00:47
into so-called marriages
of convenience to appear | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
heterosexual to the wider community. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Sabbiyah Pervez met one Leeds
man to hear his story. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
I wanted my family to
have the wedding that they wanted, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
to make them happy. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Khalid is a gay Muslim
living in Leeds. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
For eight years he was married
to a lesbian in a marriage | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
of convenience that allowed them
both to hide their sexuality. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
Their families believed
it was a typical heterosexual | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
marriage, but in reality,
the couple lived apart and led | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
entirely separate lives. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
We'd meet up on the M62 and go
in the same car to see the family. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
On an emotional level,
because you are living an additional | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
lie on the top of the lie
of being gay, it does get to you. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:29
The pressures do get to you. | 0:01:29 | 0:01:31
Marriages of convenience
are not new. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
But whereas before, Asians
who are lesbians or gay might find | 0:01:34 | 0:01:37
it difficult to find potential
partners, now the Internet makes it | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
easier and provides them
with the anonymity they need. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
One online forum we have
seen has over 1000 posts | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
about marriages of convenience. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
Whilst another site has almost 300
current members from the UK, mostly | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
from Hindu and Muslim religions. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:55
I would recommend to those
people who are doing this, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
do not do two wrongs. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
Two wrongs will not make it right. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
If you're struggling
with your faith, that's your | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
personal journey with God. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
However, deceiving other people
is in itself a moral problem. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
Karma Nirvana Helpline,
how can I help you? | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Karma Nirvana is a human rights
charity based in Yorkshire. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
They say they have seen a rapid
increase over the past two years | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
in the number of calls they get
from Asian LGBT people. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
We are dealing with
the tip of the iceberg. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
I believe this story
of the marriages of convenience | 0:02:26 | 0:02:28
and the issues of the LGBTQ
communities, is very much | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
a hidden issue out there. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:32
The extent of the problem
is going to be far more | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
than what we are seeing and hearing. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
Khalid now regrets his marriage
and says he wouldn't do it again. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
But he doesn't believe his family
would be upset by his deception. | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
I don't think they would be shocked. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:46
I almost think my mother
would be proud that I did it | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
to save the family's name,
and their standing | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
within the community. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:52
But they wouldn't understand
the reason why I couldn't do it any | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
more and why I felt I wanted to get
a divorce and live | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
the life I wanted to live. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:06
We will have more on that tonight at
6:30pm. | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
A Huddersfield player accused
of biting the captain | 0:03:09 | 0:03:11
of the Lebanese team
at the Rugby League World Cup | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
in Australia has been
found not guilty. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:15
This is the moment Jermaine
McGillvary allegedly bit | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
Robbie Farah during Saturday's win. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
The disciplinary hearing in Sydney
earlier this morning found him not | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
guilty and he's been cleared
to remain with the England Squad. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:29
Patients say a pioneering form
of underwater treatment for mental | 0:03:31 | 0:03:35
health needs to be made
available outside Wakefield. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:40
Watsu treatment has been trialled
at Pinderfields hospital and has had | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
100% positive feedback
from patients. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
It's thought the unusual form
of treatment isn't available | 0:03:47 | 0:03:49
anywhere else in the UK. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Ali Fortescue reports. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
It's hospital treatment as you
probably haven't seen it before. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:59
Watsu involves stretching
and massaging patients | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
in a pool of warm water. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
Unusual, perhaps, but this
is a treatment that | 0:04:04 | 0:04:06
appears to be working. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
Nothing has had the
impact like Watsu has. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
Because it's more than words -
it's practical, it's physical. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:18
There's a huge amount of trust
involved, and you have to be | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
totally submissive to it,
just let yourself go. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:28
It improves sleep, it induces
relaxation, it brings | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
down anxiety levels. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
It improves lung function. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
Through the gentle movements
and the warmth and buoyancy | 0:04:37 | 0:04:42
of the water, as health
practitioners we can treat any part | 0:04:42 | 0:04:45
of the body in a very safe
and very gentle way. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
All mental health patients
are different, but Watsu treatment | 0:04:48 | 0:04:51
has had just positive treatment
from around 60 patients, | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
many of whom have identified
it as a turning point | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
in their recovery. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
Pinderfields is the only hospital
that offers this treatment | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
to mental health patients
on the NHS in Yorkshire. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:04
But the problem isn't just access,
it's what happens when patients | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
leave the hospital. | 0:05:07 | 0:05:08
Because funding stops
at the hospital doors, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
patients say recovery at home
without Watsu can be tough. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
But since we raised the issue,
the trust are now reviewing | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
their current after-care plans. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
If you have a mental
illness, a lot of the time | 0:05:22 | 0:05:24
you become socially isolated. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
It's very difficult anywhere
to actually open up for the fear | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
of being ridiculed and dismissed. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
But here, there's none of that. | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
Here, we are still part of it
and we're made feel worthwhile. | 0:05:39 | 0:05:43
It's very life-changing. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
The hope is that success
in Wakefield will inspire | 0:05:47 | 0:05:49
hospitals across the country,
and that more patients | 0:05:49 | 0:05:52
like Michael can leave the scars
of mental health behind them. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
Ali Fortescue, BBC
Look North, Wakefield. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
Finally this lunchtime,
if you're thinking about getting | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
the Christmas decorations out
of the attic, | 0:06:03 | 0:06:04
well, Chatsworth House
has beaten you to it. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
Their halls are decked,
their firs are spruced. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
Today we had a special
invitation to take a look | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
at their festive preparations. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:13
Tom Ingall went along. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
If you're somebody who loves
to count down the days to Christmas, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:22
this is no doubt a day ringed in red
on your calendar, because it's | 0:06:22 | 0:06:25
the day Chatsworth House
reveals its Christmas 2017 theme. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
We are in the chapel,
where the tree and the baubles | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
and lights are glittering,
although I'm assured | 0:06:32 | 0:06:34
there are still quite a few shopping
days left until the big day. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
Someone who can tell us
about the scene they have | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
Someone who can tell us
about the theme they have | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
chosen is Janet Bitton,
the housekeeper at Chatsworth. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:45
What have you gone with this year? | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
This year we have gone
with, | 0:06:47 | 0:06:49 | |
"Oh, Dickens, It's
Christmas At Chatsworth." | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
How does that translate
from the pages of the book, then, | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
to a roomful of decorations? | 0:06:53 | 0:06:54
We have been thinking about doing
Dickens for quite some time, | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
because it's so atmospheric. | 0:06:57 | 0:06:58
Everybody thinks of
A Christmas Carol and Christmas | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
stories to do with Dickens. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:01
It's something we
really wanted to do. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:02
We have tried to liven it up a bit
because obviously Dickens can be | 0:07:02 | 0:07:06
a little bit sad in places. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:07
And we have just taken it
into each of the rooms, | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
taken the main stories and given it
a bit of pizzazz. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
So you have plucked your favourite
characters from the books, have you? | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
Who have you chosen to represent? | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
We particularly focused
on A Christmas Carol, | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
just because of its familarity with
Christmas. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
And we also have some actors
in this year as well, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
starring as Fagin and Miss Havisham. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
We have the Green Man,
who will be sitting behind me here. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
That's to do with Christmas present
and presents itself. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
How many people does it take to put
your decorations up every year? | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
It must take a while! | 0:07:39 | 0:07:40
We have two main teams who get
involved, coming under | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
the decorations team. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:45
There's probably about 20 of us
altogether, although we don't | 0:07:45 | 0:07:48
work at the same time. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:49
We have a shift system. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:50
We start early in the morning
and finish mid-afternoon, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
and the second shift comes
on until the night. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Thank you very much indeed. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
And if you think it takes a long
time to put your decorations up, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
spare a thought for these guys. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
Not only that, they've got to take
them all down again in January. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:07
Have you got your sprouts on for
Christmas Day yet? I'm not a huge | 0:08:07 | 0:08:13
fan of sprouts. I think they are gag
inducing. I'm not a fan. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
The weather has been feeling good
today, but cool and chilly, but | 0:08:20 | 0:08:25
fairly good across the whole of
Yorkshire. Temperatures around nine | 0:08:25 | 0:08:28
or ten, but it will remain dry. Not
much going on on the map, which is | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
good news. If you like the dry
weather and sunshine. But | 0:08:32 | 0:08:37
temperatures still disappointing,
eight or nine pretty much across the | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
board. As we move through the
afternoon and into the evening, the | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
sunshine tends to turn more hazy.
That's ahead of this weather front | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
moving in from the West. Parts of
north Yorkshire remaining mostly | 0:08:47 | 0:08:52
dry, breezy at times. HIV-1,
temperatures down to three or four | 0:08:52 | 0:08:58
Celsius tonight. A very different
feel. -- quite a chilly one, | 0:08:58 | 0:09:05
temperatures down to three or four
Celsius. We'll see brighter spells | 0:09:05 | 0:09:11
as we had through the day and into
tomorrow afternoon. Temperatures | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
higher than today, I think 12 or 13
Celsius. Looking mostly dry as we | 0:09:16 | 0:09:22
had to the end of the week. The
weekend will be looking pretty good. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:28
I will be doing the Christmas lights
switch on in York next week. With | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
that big plunger. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:33 |
