So will the Government's latest housing plans help?


The Government says it wants to fix the broken housing market.


They say England needs 250,000 new homes a year, and we aren't


So how will the Government kick-start


First of all, it requires all local authorities to be a lot more


realistic about local need, to assess that


We need a lot more smaller, independent builders.


We also need new methods of construction.


Sajid Javid also says he'll keep protections on green belt land,


except where there are no other options for house-building.


Here in Sheffield, there is no local plan for how lands can be used.


It means developers can put in applications


for developments like on this land on the outskirts of Deepcar.


The green belt in Sheffield is up for review as part


of the local plan process, and we don't yet know which areas


and which sites will be proposed to be taken out of the green belt.


Our issue really here is that Sheffield should really only grow


outwards if it's making the most use of its inner urban areas.


The Government says its White Paper should clear some of the blockages


that prevent homes being built at the rate they're needed.


Labour said the White Paper is a damp squib, and will do little


Before we get the forecast, snow has caused disruption on higher

brisk easterly breeze really affecting the coast and exposed


hills, it's going to feel bitterly cold indeed.
