Hello, and welcome to Midlands Today. | :00:00. | :00:00.
It's celebration time, as the Commonwealth Games delivers | :00:00. | :00:08.
16 medals, and counting, for Midlands competitors. | :00:09. | :00:16.
After two Commonwealth gold medals, a fantastic Black Country homecoming | :00:17. | :00:26.
triathlete Jodie Stimpson. I am so pleased for you. Thank you. Goodbye. | :00:27. | :00:29.
But, away from the Games, a sporting blow for the region. | :00:30. | :00:37.
You have just said nobody wants a swimming pool. I did not say that! I | :00:38. | :00:53.
see it as a demise in competitive swimming. | :00:54. | :00:56.
A hi`tech plan to help tackle major fires. | :00:57. | :00:58.
40,000 pack into a Birmingham park to celebrate | :00:59. | :01:00.
And, last week, we had soaring temperatures and plenty of sunshine. | :01:01. | :01:05.
I'll have all the details in the forecast later. | :01:06. | :01:16.
Double Commonwealth champion Jodie Stimpson has returned home to | :01:17. | :01:22.
a hero's welcome from friends and family in the Black Country. | :01:23. | :01:25.
Triathlete Jodie won England's first gold medal of the Games in Glasgow | :01:26. | :01:28.
on Thursday, and then won her second on Saturday in the mixed team relay. | :01:29. | :01:32.
After celebrating her two golds, it was back home to Oldbury | :01:33. | :01:34.
in Sandwell where her family have draped a huge medal on the front | :01:35. | :01:37.
In a moment, we'll be chatting live to Jodie, | :01:38. | :01:41.
And still the congratulations keep on coming. | :01:42. | :01:55.
Jodie's 91`year`old neighbour, thrilled about her achievements | :01:56. | :02:00.
COMMENTATOR: The 2014 Commonwealth Games... | :02:01. | :02:09.
Jodie had to swim 1,500 metres, cycle 40km and, lastly, | :02:10. | :02:11.
At the point where she breaks away from her rivals, | :02:12. | :02:14.
You can send people when you are running. You don't know how many | :02:15. | :02:24.
people are around you, but I could sense there were a few that and on | :02:25. | :02:29.
the last lap I was in my head space, I am going to get rid of some of | :02:30. | :02:31.
these competitors. For her parents, | :02:32. | :02:33.
it was a glorious moment. My heart was pounding that much. I | :02:34. | :02:43.
thought, your heart must be pounding doubly. I just wanted to get to the | :02:44. | :02:50.
end. It was great. With 1.5 kilometres to go, that is when it | :02:51. | :02:54.
started to build up inside me as well. The emotions, everything else. | :02:55. | :02:57.
And they were made proud again when their daughter and her team mates | :02:58. | :03:00.
COMMENTATOR: England when the Commonwealth Games mixed team relay. | :03:01. | :03:07.
Since winning her first triathlon at nine years old, | :03:08. | :03:10.
But she suffered huge disappointment in 2012 when she wasn't selected | :03:11. | :03:13.
I think it definitely drove me, and gave me a kick up the backside for | :03:14. | :03:24.
what I needed to do. So, I think it was more so not | :03:25. | :03:29.
wanting to miss another Championship that drove me more. | :03:30. | :03:30.
The determination's paid off, and plans are being made for | :03:31. | :03:32.
It is absolutely really incredible what she has achieved, and we have | :03:33. | :03:43.
two, as a borough, she is one of our own, show how much we appreciate it. | :03:44. | :03:50.
I will probably net get `` get the opportunity again, I am training, | :03:51. | :03:54.
what should I do? The first half should feel easy, with the next | :03:55. | :03:59.
half, push on and keep going. If you're finding it hard on the first | :04:00. | :04:07.
half, do you have gone too fast. The feeling at the end is so worth it. | :04:08. | :04:11.
And I'm delighted to say Jodie joins us now. | :04:12. | :04:14.
Can you describe what the last five days have been like? | :04:15. | :04:26.
Oh, amazing. When I crossed the line, I could see all my family and | :04:27. | :04:33.
friends in the grandstand. That was like a roller`coaster of emotions | :04:34. | :04:37.
which all came at once. Then, I got back home, it was the same again. | :04:38. | :04:42.
Anyone who could not make it up to Glasgow were outside my house. I had | :04:43. | :04:47.
no idea. What about the family and friends in the stadium, could you | :04:48. | :04:52.
see them? Yes, when I was able to look into | :04:53. | :04:57.
the grandstand, as my brother, my mum, my dad, my sister. It was | :04:58. | :05:03.
fantastic to share what a big achievement it was. Were they going | :05:04. | :05:08.
bonkers. Totally, they were jumping up and down. I have watched the race | :05:09. | :05:13.
back. I can see everybody running behind me trying to get me trying to | :05:14. | :05:18.
get near then you come home and see everyone else, it must have been | :05:19. | :05:23.
terrific for you today. As I say, it has been nonstop, | :05:24. | :05:28.
fantastic. I have so much support back home. I wouldn't have been able | :05:29. | :05:32.
to achieve without them. It is as much mind as their medal. | :05:33. | :05:37.
You will become a role model for people in Sandwell, that is a | :05:38. | :05:41.
responsibility. If I can get one or two people to | :05:42. | :05:47.
have a go at sport, the triathlon, I see that as a success. I hope other | :05:48. | :05:52.
people will have a go now. We have a photograph of you as a | :05:53. | :05:57.
youngster, performing, starting on the way. Could you ever have | :05:58. | :06:01.
imagined then that you would achieve so much now? | :06:02. | :06:07.
Definitely not. I have always loved sport. I have always wanted to | :06:08. | :06:12.
compete at a high level. It has always been a dream. You never know | :06:13. | :06:17.
if dreams are going to come true and mine came true at the weekend. | :06:18. | :06:23.
We have two ask what happens next. I suppose Rio is rearing up in your | :06:24. | :06:27.
mind? Definitely. When I missed out on | :06:28. | :06:31.
London, that was the number one thing, I didn't want to miss another | :06:32. | :06:37.
Championship, it hurt too much. Definitely, Rio is on the cards, two | :06:38. | :06:42.
years will go so quickly. You will have even more people | :06:43. | :06:44.
following you now. Congratulations. The only 50m swimming pool | :06:45. | :06:49.
in the West Midlands is to close, even though 11,000 people signed | :06:50. | :06:51.
a petition to keep Coventry City Council plans to close | :06:52. | :06:54.
the pool and replace it with a new ?37m leisure centre elsewhere | :06:55. | :06:57.
in the city. More details now from | :06:58. | :07:00.
Sian Grzeszczyk. You said nobody wants a 50 metre | :07:01. | :07:12.
swimming pool. I did not. These campaigners vented | :07:13. | :07:22.
their frustration on the councillor who made the announcement today, | :07:23. | :07:25.
after hearing they are set to lose The anger is frustration. | :07:26. | :07:35.
Frustration at the council aren't listening to what we are saying. A | :07:36. | :07:38.
50 metre pool can be profitable. Despite one of the biggest petitions | :07:39. | :07:41.
in the history of the council, the politician responsible insisted they | :07:42. | :07:44.
had listened to people's concerns. The cost | :07:45. | :07:46.
of maintaining this building works And to refurbish the whole | :07:47. | :07:48.
of this building would cost over We have not ignored the petitioners | :07:49. | :07:52.
at all. It's been enjoyed by thousands | :07:53. | :07:59.
of Coventrians for decades, and those swimming there today were | :08:00. | :08:01.
sad to hear the news. I grew up in the city and thought | :08:02. | :08:04.
it was available for all. The majority of people come here | :08:05. | :08:10.
do not realise the facilities will | :08:11. | :08:23.
not provide the same. This is where the council wants to | :08:24. | :08:26.
build a brand new ?37 million leisure centre, with water park, | :08:27. | :08:29.
and a new 25 metre swimming pool, Part of the sports centre is | :08:30. | :08:32.
listed and so councillors Instead, they'll have to | :08:33. | :08:38.
find another use for it. There are two cities | :08:39. | :08:48.
which won't have a 50 metre pool, In the meantime, there are plans | :08:49. | :08:54.
for a new 50 metre pool at Birmingham University which is | :08:55. | :09:00.
due to open in 2016, a year before We'll have more Commonwealth Games | :09:01. | :09:03.
news later. School's out for summer, unless, | :09:04. | :09:16.
that is, you're I will be finding out why many of | :09:17. | :09:33.
our parks but this one in Dudley are thriving, despite having their | :09:34. | :09:35.
funding cut dramatically by local councils. | :09:36. | :09:38.
A 19`year`old man is being by questioned by police in Warwickshire | :09:39. | :09:42.
about the murder of a man who was shot dead near Rugby on Friday. | :09:43. | :09:48.
23`year`old Jordan Banton died from a gunshot wound to the head. | :09:49. | :09:50.
Police have located the vehicle they believe was used | :09:51. | :09:56.
by the killer, a Vauxhall insignia, similar to this one. | :09:57. | :09:58.
Two other men have been released on police bail, and a woman has | :09:59. | :10:01.
been released without charge in connection with the killing. | :10:02. | :10:04.
Police in Birmingham have released CCTV pictures of the moment | :10:05. | :10:06.
an officer was flung to the ground, as he tried to stop a getaway van. | :10:07. | :10:10.
PC Gareth Lowe spotted the vehicle in Upper Balsall Heath Road. | :10:11. | :10:12.
But, when he grabbed the passenger door handle, the van sped off. | :10:13. | :10:15.
The officer was treated in hospital for minor injuries, | :10:16. | :10:17.

with secret recording equipment by police has been jailed | :10:26. | :10:27.
Andres Balog didn't realise the cameras had been placed | :10:28. | :10:31.

A Birmingham MP has called on the city council to fly | :10:39. | :10:46.
the Palestinian flag at the Council House as a mark of respect | :10:47. | :10:49.
Two other local councils, in Preston and Bradford, have | :10:50. | :10:52.
already raised the flag, despite criticism, but Birmingham say they | :10:53. | :10:55.
Khalid Mahmood says it's not a political statement. | :10:56. | :11:10.
We have a counsellor dying and we pay respect to that. We have | :11:11. | :11:15.
hundreds of young people dying in Gaza and we can't pay respect to | :11:16. | :11:19.
them? This is the humanity Birmingham needs to show. | :11:20. | :11:21.
Labour have officially launched their campaign for the West Midlands | :11:22. | :11:24.
Police and Crime Commissioner by`election, at an event today | :11:25. | :11:26.
The party's candidate, David Jamieson, is a former MP | :11:27. | :11:29.
The by`election comes following the death of Bob Jones | :11:30. | :11:32.
Labour, who oppose the role in principle, | :11:33. | :11:34.
In this by`election, it is not about the future of the Police | :11:35. | :11:50.
Commissioner's job. That job exists, it has to be done well, there is a | :11:51. | :11:58.
budget of 500 `` half ?1 billion to make communities safer, and I want | :11:59. | :11:59.
to make sure that is done well. West Midlands Fire Service want to | :12:00. | :12:01.
trial technology that would allow 999 callers to send them video | :12:02. | :12:04.
from the scene of a fire. Around 65% | :12:05. | :12:08.
of emergency calls are now made by mobile phone, and many of those are | :12:09. | :12:10.
smart phones with built`in cameras. Our science correspondent | :12:11. | :12:13.
David Gregory`Kumar is here now. What's the thinking | :12:14. | :12:16.
behind this then, David? A year ago, saw the biggest fire | :12:17. | :12:20.
in the Midlands at a Smethwick All | :12:21. | :12:23.
the emergency services were praised But, to be honest, | :12:24. | :12:25.
the first 999 calls didn't really So, could live video sent | :12:26. | :12:29.
from the smart phones of people at the scene been more useful | :12:30. | :12:33.
when deciding the level of that The Fire Service have a 90`second | :12:34. | :12:36.
window between answering the call, and getting the right resources | :12:37. | :12:51.
on their way to the right place. So, listening to this real 999 call, | :12:52. | :12:55.
just how bad is this fire? That was the first 999 call | :12:56. | :13:09.
of hundreds made about this fire. 100,000 tonnes of blazing plastic | :13:10. | :13:13.
in Smethwick just over a year ago. The emergency services were praised | :13:14. | :13:18.
for their response to this fire. But, if they'd had access to live | :13:19. | :13:23.
video from the scene as well as the 999 call itself, | :13:24. | :13:26.
they might make very different decisions about the scale of | :13:27. | :13:29.
the response from the very start. More often than not, | :13:30. | :13:33.
we are going in blind. That is what every emergency service | :13:34. | :13:36.
works on, But, at this briefing, we're seeing | :13:37. | :13:40.
a new way to supercharge Just click on a link sent out | :13:41. | :13:45.
by the Fire Service, and your phone starts streaming live | :13:46. | :13:49.
footage to the emergency services. Something like this, | :13:50. | :14:00.
we can see straight away this is a serious incident escalating rapidly, | :14:01. | :14:03.
and impact on the communities. We need to get the right | :14:04. | :14:05.
resources as quickly as possible. Technically, you could get | :14:06. | :14:07.
a system like this up and running And what happens here than people | :14:08. | :14:16.
who work in the control room see the kind of thing usually only fire | :14:17. | :14:24.
fighters see. David, you mentioned potential | :14:25. | :14:30.
problems with this idea, David. There are all sorts of issues | :14:31. | :14:32.
this technology throws up. This is the control room at West | :14:33. | :14:36.
Midlands Fire Service in Birmingham. These are the people who deal with | :14:37. | :14:39.
emergency calls, and who could be What would be the impact | :14:40. | :14:42.
on these operators of seeing video Confronting them with upsetting | :14:43. | :14:47.
images usually only seen And then there's | :14:48. | :14:51.
the wider question of privacy. How comfortable are you with | :14:52. | :14:57.
the idea that any mobile phone could actually be sending back live | :14:58. | :15:00.
video to the emergency services. That's why, ahead of any trial, | :15:01. | :15:03.
the Fire Service would If you go to my blog, you can | :15:04. | :15:07.
read more about this technology. And also how you can | :15:08. | :15:11.
contribute to this debate. Scores of young people, | :15:12. | :15:19.
who could be the business leaders of the future, have been attending | :15:20. | :15:22.

all about having a plan B. It is not an alternative to college | :16:14. | :16:23.
or university. It is giving them the skills to think about what they | :16:24. | :16:27.
could do in the future. They can become financially independent and | :16:28. | :16:28.
not rely on the bank of mum and dad. And to further whet their appetite | :16:29. | :16:31.

people. You know what you want to do. | :17:17. | :17:17.
And that's what will hopefully drive other young people to do | :17:18. | :17:20.
the same and become the entrepreneurs of the future. | :17:21. | :17:27.

It is getting very competitive now. We all know each other. It is | :18:16. | :18:29.
getting very competitive but it is good at the same time, pushing you | :18:30. | :18:32.
forward. It is great. Peaty had already won a gold | :18:33. | :18:33.

So there's clearly an appetite for park life. | :19:40. | :19:43.
But local councils are having to find innovative ways to maintain | :19:44. | :19:45.
Bob Hockenhull is in Dudley at a park which seems to be thriving. | :19:46. | :19:59.
Basically, through people power. Lots of people in the local area | :20:00. | :20:11.
decided not many people were using this park, and it was looking a bit | :20:12. | :20:15.
scruffy. They decided to do something by cleaning it up, and | :20:16. | :20:20.
have become very adept at obtaining grants which have been used to pay | :20:21. | :20:22.
for much`needed facilities. Buffery Park in | :20:23. | :20:24.
Dudley, vibrant once again. A few years ago, it was rundown | :20:25. | :20:30.
and underused. In disrepair, no one using the park, | :20:31. | :20:35.
no play area, no water games, The children, people here, | :20:36. | :20:38.
it didn't make them happy. They have worked to improve | :20:39. | :20:41.
the public space. Lobbying for grants to bring tennis | :20:42. | :20:47.
courts back into use The community | :20:48. | :20:49.
are really positive about the park. We have had more people on the | :20:50. | :21:00.
park than we have for many years. 365 parks across the wider | :21:01. | :21:04.
West Midlands now have friends The highest number outside London, | :21:05. | :21:07.
and it looks It is warned councils may not be | :21:08. | :21:11.
able to help fund parks at all. If the rate | :21:12. | :21:25.
of budget cuts continues. There is | :21:26. | :21:29.
a possibility that will happen. But I will fight | :21:30. | :21:31.
so this does not happen because parks are unbelievably | :21:32. | :21:34.
valuable to the community. There is a feeling across the | :21:35. | :21:36.
West Midlands that our parks are there for everybody | :21:37. | :21:39.
and everyone should enjoy them. Everybody feels, | :21:40. | :21:47.
if Government cuts mean there is less funding available, then we will | :21:48. | :21:49.
have to get together and assist At Canon Hill Park in Birmingham, | :21:50. | :21:52.
that regeneration has come in the It has cost half a million pounds, | :21:53. | :21:59.
and the company pays rent to the council and believes it will | :22:00. | :22:12.
boost visitor numbers. We are getting many generations of a | :22:13. | :22:23.
family, all playing, having great fun, anyone can win. | :22:24. | :22:25.
So, whether it is with private money or through volunteering, | :22:26. | :22:27.
park lovers are determined to keep the green lungs of their towns | :22:28. | :22:30.
This is an example of the innovation, this pavilion was lying | :22:31. | :22:47.
derelict, but the group decided to spruce it up. It is being used by | :22:48. | :22:51.
community groups paying rent, and that means the group has money which | :22:52. | :22:57.
they are ploughing back into sprucing up this park, so everybody | :22:58. | :22:58.
wins. 40,000 people came together | :22:59. | :23:02.
in Birmingham earlier today, for one of the biggest Eid | :23:03. | :23:04.
celebrations in the country. The event at Small Heath Park marked | :23:05. | :23:07.
the end of the Muslim holy month A celebration to end the long month | :23:08. | :23:23.
of fasting, organisers said this event at small fee part was the | :23:24. | :23:28.
biggest of its kind in the UK. With Ramadan over at sunrise, thousands | :23:29. | :23:33.
join together for morning prayers, and the fantastic weather encouraged | :23:34. | :23:37.
a record`breaking crowd to celebrate in the open air. | :23:38. | :23:40.
I will be surprised if anything like this in Europe where people come | :23:41. | :23:44.
together on this scale. We have mosques with small accommodations, | :23:45. | :23:49.
but 40,000 people coming together, I will be surprised if anybody else | :23:50. | :23:54.
beats this in Europe. These facilities are one of two in the | :23:55. | :23:56.
Islamic calendar. This comes at the end of a tough | :23:57. | :24:01.
Ramadan, very long and hot days of fasting. That calls for an extra big | :24:02. | :24:06.
submission with lots of fun and food. After so much sacrifice, it | :24:07. | :24:13.
was time to indulge. Eid means feast, and like Christmas, | :24:14. | :24:17.
gifts are exchanged, there is a big family meal. Many also wanted to | :24:18. | :24:21.
come together with the wider community to celebrate. | :24:22. | :24:29.
The atmosphere so far is buzzing, well done to the arrangements. | :24:30. | :24:35.
45,000 people from Somali background, Muslim, Arabic, people | :24:36. | :24:39.
from Canada are here who have flown over especially. It is wonderful. | :24:40. | :24:45.
As ever, the children are having the most fun. | :24:46. | :24:53.
It's not like school or Jewish and. Is this one of the best days of the | :24:54. | :25:04.
year? Yes. Happy Eid, everybody! `` like tuition. | :25:05. | :25:08.
Another hot and steamy one out there today. | :25:09. | :25:10.
It isn't a bad week to come. Today, 24 Celsius. As the British summer | :25:11. | :25:23.
Time goes, a few showers can be expected. We will see the sun at | :25:24. | :25:28.
times but as we head to the end the week, things will get a little more | :25:29. | :25:33.
unsettled. It is not feeling cold. Impaired to where we were this time | :25:34. | :25:39.
last week, with 30 Celsius, we are back to where we should be sent it | :25:40. | :25:44.
is feeling a little cooler. Plenty of clear skies overhead today which | :25:45. | :25:47.
allowed the sun to come out for a time. We have started to see the | :25:48. | :25:52.
cloud filling in at the end of the day. That cloud is with us overnight | :25:53. | :25:56.
and will keep some clear skies leading to missed developing. A | :25:57. | :26:04.
mostly dry night. Temperatures ranging between 11 and 14 Celsius. | :26:05. | :26:11.
We start tomorrow with a change. This weather front works its way | :26:12. | :26:17.
through. Bringing mostly cloud, some rain. Not a bad beginning to the | :26:18. | :26:22.
day. Plenty of sunshine through the morning. Temperatures are not | :26:23. | :26:27.
falling away too far overnight. In the afternoon, we will see the cloud | :26:28. | :26:33.
filling in. Temperatures up to 24 Celsius tomorrow. The cloud | :26:34. | :26:36.
continuing to thicken at the end of the day. Some rain. Then we will see | :26:37. | :26:45.
the cloud moving away overnight stop we will get some more clear spells | :26:46. | :26:49.
of a head which could lead to some mist and fog patches, cooling down a | :26:50. | :26:54.
little bit tomorrow night. Wednesday is an unsettled day. The sun will be | :26:55. | :26:58.
out in the morning but then we will see showers. Temperatures will | :26:59. | :27:06.
tumble. The winds will pick up. Starting to be more unsettled after | :27:07. | :27:11.
a scorching July. By August, I am afraid we have rain in the forecast. | :27:12. | :27:13.
Typical! After brief lull in hostilities, | :27:14. | :27:16.
there's more agony in Gaza as a hospital and | :27:17. | :27:20.
a children's playground are hit. And a rousing welcome home to the | :27:21. | :27:25.
Black Country for Jodie Stimpson, a double gold medallist | :27:26. | :27:28.
at the Commonwealth Games. I'll be back at ten o'clock | :27:29. | :27:33.
with your latest update. I leave the ashram, travel halfway | :27:34. | :27:38.
across the world to find my father, Oh, well. As Vashrati says, | :27:39. | :28:02.
gotta keep smiling! We don't tend to use the bathroom | :28:03. | :28:10.
together here. All right, well, | :28:11. | :28:13.
I'll catch you later. This ashram of yours, | :28:14. | :28:14.
it might be a cult. I take it back, | :28:15. | :28:18.
he's definitely Cuckoo's son. | :28:19. | :28:23. |
