The headlines tonight: Guilty of murder - | :00:00. | :00:08.
the father of a 13-day-old baby boy who died from multiple injuries | :00:09. | :00:19.
It's very difficult to understand what would lead him to do something | :00:20. | :00:27.
so tragic to such a vulnerable young child. | :00:28. | :00:28.
Joshua had been shaken so violently he was unable | :00:29. | :00:31.
Also tonight: Hailed a hero - the 75-year-old who refused to give | :00:32. | :00:35.
I just went for it. I mean, I'm 75. I did my best, and apparently, it | :00:36. | :00:46.
worked. A sensation on social media - | :00:47. | :00:47.
the brave schoolboy with bone cancer I live in Coventry, because | :00:48. | :01:02.
international rugby league comes this weekend. -- I am live. | :01:03. | :01:06.
And a dry October seems to have produced a riot of autumn colour, | :01:07. | :01:09.
but will November's chill put an end to it? | :01:10. | :01:11.
Guilty of killing his son, who was only 13 days old. | :01:12. | :01:25.
Daniel Sanzone was convicted of murdering baby Joshua | :01:26. | :01:29.
by shaking him so violently he caused "catastrophic" | :01:30. | :01:31.
The judge described it as a "tragic and distressing case". | :01:32. | :01:36.
Today, a jury at Birmingham Crown Court also found him guilty | :01:37. | :01:39.
But the baby's mother, Zoe Howell, was allowed to walk free, | :01:40. | :01:48.
after the jury cleared her of a charge of causing | :01:49. | :01:50.
or allowing her son's death and neglect. | :01:51. | :01:52.
Sarah Falkland was in court; what was the reaction when | :01:53. | :01:54.
Daniel Sanzone sat with his head in his hands and as foreman said | :01:55. | :01:59.
Zoe Howell's mother Sharon cried out "Yes" from the public gallery. | :02:00. | :02:11.
It's been a harrowing three,week trial, full of shocking det`ils | :02:12. | :02:17.
about Joshua's injuries, how the newborn would screal | :02:18. | :02:19.
as if in pain when left alone with his father - | :02:20. | :02:25.
My colleague Ben Godfrey has this report on the | :02:26. | :02:27.
Joshua Millinson was born a bright and healthy baby. | :02:28. | :02:31.
But 13 days later he sufferdd catastrophic brain injuries | :02:32. | :02:33.
It is very difficult to comprehend and | :02:34. | :02:36.
understand Sanzone as a character and what would lead | :02:37. | :02:38.
him to do something so tragic to such | :02:39. | :02:40.
Here in the lounge of this house last October here | :02:41. | :02:47.
Sanzone violently shook Joshua, leaving him with brain injuries so | :02:48. | :02:51.
severe he could no longer hear, see or breathe. | :02:52. | :02:58.
He claimed a loud noise heard that night was not him | :02:59. | :03:00.
injuring his child, he was simply moving the settee | :03:01. | :03:03.
Joshua's mother, Zoe Howell, had separated from Sanzone just days | :03:04. | :03:05.
She clutched a baby's toy each day of the trial. | :03:06. | :03:13.
She denied causing or allowhng her baby's death by effectively turning | :03:14. | :03:16.
The first year of a child's life is the time they are most vulndrable to | :03:17. | :03:32.
becoming a victim of homicide, because young children at that age | :03:33. | :03:36.
are very vocal in terms of their needs, and where you have p`rents | :03:37. | :03:40.
who are unwilling or unable to meet those needs, you have a potdntial -- | :03:41. | :03:50.
potentially dangerous situation In a recording of a 999 call, you | :03:51. | :03:52.
get the sense of the panic. Joshua died a month later. Parents | :03:53. | :04:22.
know the detail -- difference between right and wrong. Yot will | :04:23. | :04:26.
often see them concealing things, making things up, and not attending | :04:27. | :04:28.
appointments. Those are a rdd flag. Zoe Howell and Joshua were regularly | :04:29. | :04:37.
visited by community midwivds They consistently encounterdd | :04:38. | :04:40.
a healthy and alert child. The parents brought Joshua | :04:41. | :04:43.
here to the A at New Cross occasions in the days beford | :04:44. | :04:46.
the shaking incident, apparently concerned about breathing | :04:47. | :04:49.
difficulties and a But a junior doctor | :04:50. | :04:50.
examined the baby and found And the parents then failed to show | :04:51. | :04:53.
for a follow-up check. But the court was told that a bone | :04:54. | :05:00.
specialist had concluded th`t Joshua may have suffered a catalogue | :05:01. | :05:06.
of fractures before those So could the agencies | :05:07. | :05:08.
who came into contact with the family, and even | :05:09. | :05:11.
entered their house, have done anything to prevent | :05:12. | :05:13.
Joshua's death? Did Joshua's mother have anxthing to | :05:14. | :05:15.
say after the case. She came down the steps behhnd me | :05:16. | :05:37.
with her mother Sharon, who we heard had also | :05:38. | :05:40.
had her suspicions about Sanzone, and she just repeated softlx "No | :05:41. | :05:42.
interviews, no interviews." The court though had heard how | :05:43. | :05:44.
she felt "her life had begun" when given birth to Joshua, | :05:45. | :05:47.
and that if she'd realised Sanzone was hurting him she'd have | :05:48. | :05:50.
done something about it. What sentence do you think Sanzone | :05:51. | :05:57.
is likely to get? The minimum sentence | :05:58. | :06:00.
for what he did is 15 years. But the judge said he needed time | :06:01. | :06:04.
to reflect on what Sanzone had done. A 75-year-old man from Birmhngham's | :06:05. | :06:14.
been praised by police for fighting off a gang who tried | :06:15. | :06:17.
to steal his car in a dark tunnel. Anthony Mathers was thrown | :06:18. | :06:20.
to the ground and suffered cuts and bruises in the incident, the | :06:21. | :06:22.
start of which was caught on camera. He was threatened with a knhfe | :06:23. | :06:25.
and imitation gun, but as Giles Latcham reports, | :06:26. | :06:28.
he was in no mood to give in. I rip all the skin off my elbow .. | :06:29. | :06:36.
-- ripped. Anthony Mathers was on a rottine | :06:37. | :06:42.
trip to the shops, on his w`y through a tunnel he's driven | :06:43. | :06:45.
through thousands of times. But then up ahead, a menacing | :06:46. | :06:47.
figure loomed into view. I blew my horn at him, and he | :06:48. | :06:53.
jumped, but he stayed there. I didn't even think other timd what | :06:54. | :06:54.
they were after. But it soon became clear it was his | :06:55. | :06:59.
Ford S-Max they were after, and the 75 year old was | :07:00. | :07:04.
pulled from the vehicle. The other one pulled a knifd. My | :07:05. | :07:13.
reaction was, if you come close to me, I will stick the knife... I was | :07:14. | :07:19.
so high on the adrenaline. H think if one of them would have come near | :07:20. | :07:21.
me, I would have hurt them. The robbers did drive off briefly, | :07:22. | :07:24.
but stalled the car at the top of the road - | :07:25. | :07:26.
allowing Mr Mathers time I just went for it. I mean, I'm 75. | :07:27. | :07:37.
I did my best, and apparently it worked. | :07:38. | :07:48.
A 17-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. | :07:49. | :07:52.
Detectives are looking for two more suspects - | :07:53. | :07:54.
all described as in their l`te teens and of Asian appearance. | :07:55. | :07:57.
Normally we advise people not to fight back in those circumstances, | :07:58. | :08:05.
but Anthony acted very bravdly to maintain control of his vehhcle and | :08:06. | :08:09.
to prevent them from stealing it from him. | :08:10. | :08:13.
The former Land Rover worker paid a price though, thrown | :08:14. | :08:15.
to the ground three times bdfore he wrestled his keys | :08:16. | :08:18.
from the robbers - but he says he'd do it all `gain. | :08:19. | :08:22.
People of my age are entitldd to a quiet life. They do not desdrve | :08:23. | :08:31.
people coming up to them trxing to get their possessions of thdm. So | :08:32. | :08:35.
therefore I would fight every time. Mr Mathers is grateful to three | :08:36. | :08:37.
women who came to his aid. Two children and a man have been | :08:38. | :08:40.
found dead in a house in Hinckley Police were called to | :08:41. | :08:51.
the house last night. Our reporter Dan Johnson | :08:52. | :08:54.
is there this evening. Dan, what do you know | :08:55. | :08:56.
about what's happened? This is where police came l`st night | :08:57. | :09:06.
at about 9:30pm after neighbour -- neighbours called with reports of a | :09:07. | :09:11.
disturbance. A stand-off thdn developed, lasting into the early | :09:12. | :09:15.
hours with negotiators brought in. During the early hours a wolan was | :09:16. | :09:19.
released from the property but had to be taken to hospital for | :09:20. | :09:23.
treatment. She is still there and in a stable condition. That is when | :09:24. | :09:27.
officers were able to get inside, and they found the bodies of a man | :09:28. | :09:33.
and two young children. We got an update earlier from the detdctive | :09:34. | :09:34.
leading the investigation. The officers entered the address, | :09:35. | :09:37.
and they found a male, who has been pronounced dead, | :09:38. | :09:39.
within the address. Tragically, and very | :09:40. | :09:41.
traumatically, the officers, on searching the address, | :09:42. | :09:43.
have also found two At this stage, the enquiries | :09:44. | :09:45.
are at a very early stage and we are trying to understand | :09:46. | :09:48.
what happened last Tonight, neighbours have naled the | :09:49. | :10:06.
members of this family as D`vid Stokes, who was 43, and his children | :10:07. | :10:12.
at them and Matthew aged five and 11. It is believed Sally Stokes is | :10:13. | :10:17.
his wife who was taken to hospital. Police still investigating here and | :10:18. | :10:21.
the Independent Police Complaints Commission will be brought hn. The | :10:22. | :10:24.
neighbours are trying to understand what it can have been that led to | :10:25. | :10:28.
three members of the same f`mily dying here in the family hole. | :10:29. | :10:33.

I just wanted to say hello to my fans. I know you guys are a bit | :11:35. | :11:47.
worried about me, so don't worry. I finished my first part of mx chemo, | :11:48. | :11:48.

Shefali's been getting some stunning pictures of autumnal | :13:47. | :13:49.
I have indeed, the studio h`s been transformed into an autumn scene. | :13:50. | :13:57.
This is just a sample of thd many photos you have been sending us It | :13:58. | :14:03.
has been spectacularly -- particularly spectacular thhs year, | :14:04. | :14:06.
because of the wet sunny spring which lets the trees store tp their | :14:07. | :14:12.
sugars. The best of those dhsplays were at the end of last month. But | :14:13. | :14:16.
let's hope the November chill does not put a stop to that. But keep | :14:17. | :14:21.
those pictures coming in, bdcause they brighten our days. Go to the | :14:22. | :14:24.
website to become a weather watcher. Campaigners trying to save ` drug | :14:25. | :14:29.
and alcohol rehabilitation centre from closure are warning th`t people | :14:30. | :14:32.
could die if it shuts. The BAC O'Connor service has been | :14:33. | :14:34.
told that council funding whll be halved, and that one of its two | :14:35. | :14:38.
centres could close. A public meeting is being hdld | :14:39. | :14:41.
tonight to discuss This was Mark Birtles | :14:42. | :14:43.
at his lowest ebb - drinking a litre of vodka a day | :14:44. | :14:52.
and on the verge of death. I completely understand, | :14:53. | :14:57.
I've been there myself... Six years on, the father | :14:58. | :15:00.
from Stoke-on-Trent is a recovering alcoholic, and now an outre`ch | :15:01. | :15:02.
worker for the BAC O'Connor Centre, I'm going out every day, | :15:03. | :15:05.
speaking to people who They need the help that I got, | :15:06. | :15:15.
and if this place closes, then where is that help | :15:16. | :15:22.
going to come from? He's one of more than 350 pdople | :15:23. | :15:24.
every year the centre Now, though, it could | :15:25. | :15:27.
close, in seven weeks. The BAC changed my life, | :15:28. | :15:33.
it changed my world, it changed my family's | :15:34. | :15:35.
world, more important. I was 25 at the time | :15:36. | :15:39.
and I didn't care if I died. I've got a granddaughter | :15:40. | :15:48.
and a grandson. Who I thought I wasn't | :15:49. | :15:49.
going to watch grow up. The charity is currently funded | :15:50. | :15:52.
by Staffordshire County Council along with another centre | :15:53. | :15:54.
in Burton upon Trent. No-one from the authority | :15:55. | :15:58.
would agree to do an intervhew, but they did say they are h`ving | :15:59. | :16:01.
to cut ?50 million from the budget, and therefore have had to rdduce | :16:02. | :16:04.
the charity's funding by half. Without their support I think | :16:05. | :16:16.
people are going to die, Potentially, people | :16:17. | :16:19.
are going to die. The A department's alreadx | :16:20. | :16:22.
overrun. It's a plight supported | :16:23. | :16:23.
by the comedian Russell brand, These campaigners say cutting costs | :16:24. | :16:26.
won't help to save people's lives. Every year thousands of babhes | :16:27. | :16:39.
are born prematurely, spending the first weeks | :16:40. | :16:41.
of their tiny existence Inevitably, it's a traumatic time | :16:42. | :16:43.
for parents, not knowing Well, now one hospital has decided | :16:44. | :16:54.
to line its walls with inspiration for those | :16:55. | :16:59.
going through just such a thme. This is ten-year-old Noah, | :17:00. | :17:01.
a twin born 16 weeks early. He survived the trauma; | :17:02. | :17:09.
unfortunately, he had It's quite an emotional day really, | :17:10. | :17:10.
seeing his picture on the w`ll, but as you can see, you wouldn't | :17:11. | :17:18.
think he's a 23-weeker His picture is now amongst lany now | :17:19. | :17:21.
adorning walls outside the neonatal unit of University | :17:22. | :17:33.
hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. The aim is to encourage pardnts | :17:34. | :17:35.
who are currently tending For the parents, it's | :17:36. | :17:38.
a roller-coaster ride, literally. One moment they're full of hope | :17:39. | :17:43.
and they think everything's going well, and then next d`y it's | :17:44. | :17:45.
like a slap on the face. And that's why I thought | :17:46. | :17:48.
these pictures might And this is Josh, who is | :17:49. | :17:52.
also in the gallery. Seeing his picture | :17:53. | :17:58.
brought his mum to tears. Well, it's just the memories of him | :17:59. | :17:59.
being born and being in hospital, Because it's his birthday | :18:00. | :18:03.
today as well. Now, this one is particularly | :18:04. | :18:12.
interesting, that's because it's both mother and daughter, | :18:13. | :18:16.
who were both born here prelaturely. And if you're wondering, | :18:17. | :18:20.
this is Mum 28 years ago. A lot of the same nurses who looked | :18:21. | :18:34.
after me then looked after @nnabel. They saved my life from the day | :18:35. | :18:37.
I was born, and they've carried carried on saving my life | :18:38. | :18:40.
and Annabel's life. I definitely can't fault | :18:41. | :18:42.
the neonatal unit at all. And for two mothers whose b`bies | :18:43. | :18:45.
are currently in the hospit`l.. I thought it was | :18:46. | :18:48.
really inspirational. Because we've been through ` really | :18:49. | :18:50.
tough journey here, it's It's a really difficult timd, | :18:51. | :18:52.
and to see those pictures jtst gives It's really nice to see how | :18:53. | :18:56.
far the babies come, even though they're premature | :18:57. | :19:01.
they can still have the samd life The neonatal unit in Coventry | :19:02. | :19:09.
opened in the 1960s. These days it deals with 500 | :19:10. | :19:15.
babies a month. Not all survive, but with | :19:16. | :19:17.
the right care they all In football, Coventry City `re now | :19:18. | :19:19.
three points clear of the Ldague One relegation zone after their 2-0 | :19:20. | :19:23.
victory over Captain Jordan Willis | :19:24. | :19:25.
scored his first league goal, to put the Sky Blues | :19:26. | :19:28.
in front at the Ricoh Arena. And the substitute Andrew Rose | :19:29. | :19:31.
ensured it would be a fifth win in seven games for the caretaker | :19:32. | :19:33.
manager Mark Venus. Rugby league fans will be ddscending | :19:34. | :19:36.
on Coventry this weekend for a Four Nations double hdader | :19:37. | :19:38.
at the Ricoh Arena. It's a sport traditionally | :19:39. | :19:41.
associated with the north of England, but will this bd | :19:42. | :19:43.
the boost rugby league needs to grow its popularity | :19:44. | :19:45.
here in the West Midlands? Ian Winter is with | :19:46. | :19:48.
some fans tonight. Yes, Wednesday night is trahning | :19:49. | :20:06.
night for the Coventry rugbx league squad, and many of the top players | :20:07. | :20:11.
in the world are actually hdre at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday. It is | :20:12. | :20:16.
quite a landmark sporting event for Coventry, and one happy couple in | :20:17. | :20:21.
particular. Guy loves Debbie, and Coventry girl | :20:22. | :20:31.
Debbie loves Greg. And Greg loves rugby league. So when he discovered | :20:32. | :20:37.
their wedding was on the sale day as Australia against New Zealand, | :20:38. | :20:39.
Debbie decided this was the perfect match in more ways than one. | :20:40. | :20:45.
No sooner has the wedding c`ke been cut, than the bride and groom will | :20:46. | :20:49.
rush off to the Ricoh Arena. What better start of a married lhfe in | :20:50. | :20:53.
Coventry's first of rugby ldague international? | :20:54. | :20:59.
I said, we've got to go. He said, you can -- we cannot walk ott of our | :21:00. | :21:03.
own wedding! I said, that's what we're about to do. | :21:04. | :21:07.
How many new brides would ghve up their wedding day to watch ` rugby | :21:08. | :21:12.
league match? None of them. | :21:13. | :21:16.
Now you know one! You are one of the million. | :21:17. | :21:20.
No sign of Debbie or Greg at the University of Birmingham, where | :21:21. | :21:24.
students have gathered to w`tch and learn. Because the England rugby | :21:25. | :21:29.
league team, under captain Sam Burgess, our training hard. Having | :21:30. | :21:32.
lost by just one point in Ndw Zealand on their opening gale, | :21:33. | :21:37.
England are now hot favourites to beat Scotland. It is a fant`stic | :21:38. | :21:45.
stadium, and I think bringing our international game and obviously | :21:46. | :21:47.
playing at the Ricoh Arena hs good to be huge for our game. | :21:48. | :21:51.
Back at the Arena, rugby posts have replaced football nets. Everything | :21:52. | :21:58.
must be perfect on the big day, so it is high time Greg went down on | :21:59. | :22:01.
bended knee to pop the vital question. | :22:02. | :22:04.
Debbie... Will you love rugby league as much as I do? | :22:05. | :22:11.
I will! The newlyweds could well have their first marital tiff when | :22:12. | :22:13.
England play Australia in tdn days's time. | :22:14. | :22:18.
All the very best to Greg and Debbie on Saturday. Let's talk to @lan who | :22:19. | :22:23.
runs the Coventry Bears rugby league team. This event is the perfect way | :22:24. | :22:27.
to raise the profile of the sport, isn't it? We are hoping for both the | :22:28. | :22:34.
matches to raise the profild of the sport. And help back up all the work | :22:35. | :22:41.
we have been doing in the community all across the region in Coventry as | :22:42. | :22:45.
well. You've got a big event taking place tomorrow, haven't you? | :22:46. | :22:50.
Yes, we've got the city of rugby project tomorrow. We've got the | :22:51. | :22:56.
schools Festival, ten schools across the city are taking part in that. | :22:57. | :23:00.
That is being supported by ` number of the England players and the | :23:01. | :23:03.
kangaroos as well, the Australian team. So we are looking forward to | :23:04. | :23:08.
that. It is really going to help get the word out about the event on | :23:09. | :23:12.
Saturday. So, England against Scotland is at | :23:13. | :23:17.
5:30pm on Saturday, and that is followed by Australia against New | :23:18. | :23:20.
Zealand. Exciting times for rugby league here in the Midlands. | :23:21. | :23:24.
And for Greg and Debbie! Thanks, Ian. | :23:25. | :23:26.
Now, this sounds really intriguing - the world of dance meeting | :23:27. | :23:29.
And it's all connected with computer games, | :23:30. | :23:31.
allowing the body movements of dancers to be mirrored bx lights. | :23:32. | :23:34.
In fact, dancers are now experimenting with it | :23:35. | :23:36.
Our arts reporter Satnam Rana has been to find out more. | :23:37. | :23:43.
Watch carefully - the lights are following the performers' movements. | :23:44. | :23:48.
This is gaming technology and dance coming together. | :23:49. | :23:50.
This show is called Pattern Recognition, | :23:51. | :23:53.
by the Alexander Whitley Dance Company. | :23:54. | :24:01.
Tracking devices follow the dancer, prompting the lights to mimhc her | :24:02. | :24:05.
movements. To understand how it works, | :24:06. | :24:06.
I've come to the University of The computer is programmed to | :24:07. | :24:08.
respond to our movement. Dr Sean Duffy is used | :24:09. | :24:19.
to experimenting with Kinect technology - originally built | :24:20. | :24:21.
for Xbox to allow gamers It uses infrared to detect the | :24:22. | :24:36.
movement of the body. It can see our arms, and legs, our head. If I move | :24:37. | :24:40.
my arm to the right, it sees that the move is the picture along. - | :24:41. | :24:45.
and moves the picture along. From the lab to Dance Xchange | :24:46. | :24:50.
in the city centre - Dr Duffy has come to see Kinect | :24:51. | :24:53.
technology on the dance floor, and to meet Alexander Whitldy | :24:54. | :24:56.
who has put the show togethdr. How challenging was it to gdt it | :24:57. | :25:03.
working and set it up? We spent probably three months or so | :25:04. | :25:07.
researching ideas, and speed -- experimenting with the diffdrent | :25:08. | :25:10.
ways the lights on the dancdr 's good intellect. As I tilt to the | :25:11. | :25:14.
side, four of the lights should follow me and arrive at the same | :25:15. | :25:19.
angle as my back. If you did the same, your lights will do the same. | :25:20. | :25:26.
So we have a dance in the lhghts in the way that we are dancing | :25:27. | :25:29.
together. This is where technology medts arts | :25:30. | :25:32.
and culture. And it looks qtite beautiful. | :25:33. | :25:37.
So, frost glinting on the ground and across the rooftops this | :25:38. | :25:39.
morning, but it still turned into a beautiful sunny day. | :25:40. | :25:42.
They are not bad if you wrap up warm. It was another beautiful day. | :25:43. | :25:56.
I was spoiled for choice ag`in were our weather Watchers? -- we`ther | :25:57. | :26:03.
Watchers's photos were concdrned. A hard frost in the countryside. But | :26:04. | :26:07.
after that we saw that crisp November sunshine breaking through, | :26:08. | :26:12.
and it showed off the autumn displays particularly well. It was a | :26:13. | :26:18.
really nice, colourful day. But the high pressure today is going to be | :26:19. | :26:22.
swept to the south-east, and behind that we have this frontal sxstem | :26:23. | :26:27.
pushing in for tomorrow. Th`t will bring showery outbreaks of rain | :26:28. | :26:35.
during the course of tomorrow. If you're planning any bonfires on | :26:36. | :26:45.
Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it will be the odd shower with a cold wind. | :26:46. | :26:50.
For tonight we are looking ` clear skies to begin with, temper`tures | :26:51. | :26:54.
plunging down to freezing. That is for the south-west, and I think in | :26:55. | :26:58.
the countryside here temper`tures could be just below freezing so we | :26:59. | :27:01.
are looking at another fairly widespread frost in rural p`rts and | :27:02. | :27:06.
mist into the morning tomorrow. But gradually through the night MacLeod | :27:07. | :27:10.
is going to be thickening up, head of the frontal system pushing in, | :27:11. | :27:14.
and during the course of tolorrow we are going to be getting showery | :27:15. | :27:17.
outbreaks of rain. But to start with it should be sunny and dry. That | :27:18. | :27:20.
rain just affecting the north-western corner of the region | :27:21. | :27:24.
during the day, but temperatures will rise to between eight `nd 1 | :27:25. | :27:28.
Celsis. Then it is during the course of tomorrow night but that rain | :27:29. | :27:33.
starts to move south eastwards, but temperatures should be slightly | :27:34. | :27:36.
higher, a little bit milder but called in to Friday and the weekend. | :27:37. | :27:40.
Temperatures up to about eight or nine. I'll be back at 10:30pm. | :27:41. | :27:44.
Goodbye for now. If you trust me not | :27:45. | :27:54.
and I trust you not, then what is the point | :27:55. | :27:56.
in this marriage at all? | :27:57. | :27:59. |
