Hello and welcome to Midlands Today. failings at one of | :00:00. | :00:13.
The headlines tonight: Deal or no deal - a BBC Midlands investigation | :00:14. | :00:17.
discovers the offers which aren't so special - customers | :00:18. | :00:19.
being overcharged at Tesco, We'll find out what your rights | :00:20. | :00:22.
are when deals are displayed but out of date. | :00:23. | :00:27.
Also tonight: Our health is at risk - claims from tenants | :00:28. | :00:32.
who say their complaints about mould are being ignored. | :00:33. | :00:37.
I can't live like this any more. It needs sorting. It's terrible. | :00:38. | :00:43.
Banning Trump from Birmingham - the Labour MP who wants to put | :00:44. | :00:45.
a block on a possible presidential state visit coming to the Midlands. | :00:46. | :00:52.
Making fairy tales come true - behind the scenes as Cinderella | :00:53. | :00:54.
And from this over the weekend to temperatures of ten Celsius | :00:55. | :01:01.
How closely do you check your supermarket receipts? | :01:02. | :01:19.
A BBC Inside Out West Midlands investigation has discovered | :01:20. | :01:21.
overcharging at some Tesco supermarkets. | :01:22. | :01:26.
The chain has promised to check its prices much more carefully, | :01:27. | :01:30.
after undercover reporter Jonathan Gibson gathered | :01:31. | :01:31.
evidence proving customers were being overcharged. | :01:32. | :01:35.
He found the same problem in 33 of the 50 Tesco stores he visited. | :01:36. | :01:41.
I'll be talking to Jonathan in a moment, but first let's see | :01:42. | :01:44.
what he discovered here in the West Midlands. | :01:45. | :02:03.
Jonathan's here now, you must have had a pretty full | :02:04. | :02:06.
trolley by the end of this exercise, what first put you onto this story? | :02:07. | :02:12.
Like most people, I love a bargain and supermarkets like Tesco are | :02:13. | :02:20.
always advertising bargains, the kind of offers that help us help | :02:21. | :02:26.
persuade us put more in our trolley, convinced we will pay the price on | :02:27. | :02:32.
the shelf at the till. That's what I found that Tesco because a special | :02:33. | :02:35.
offer labels are being left on the shelves after the special offer has | :02:36. | :02:39.
ended and in some stores, quite a few of them. | :02:40. | :02:40.
How did you prove to Tesco it was a big problem? | :02:41. | :02:46.
Let me introduce you to the trolley full of special offers that aren't | :02:47. | :02:53.
quite what they seem. I picked up all of these multi-byte offers at | :02:54. | :02:57.
Tesco stores across the country but in every case, the till price was | :02:58. | :03:01.
more than the shelf price because they were being advertised as being | :03:02. | :03:07.
on offer when they went. Workers are supposed to remove the labels so | :03:08. | :03:11.
shoppers don't get misled but when I asked staff in Coventry why this | :03:12. | :03:14.
wasn't happening, I got a surprisingly frank response. | :03:15. | :03:26.
So what are people's rights when this kind of thing happens? | :03:27. | :03:33.
To be fair to Tesco, whenever we should staff that we paid more at | :03:34. | :03:39.
the till than on the shelf, they refunded the difference, but as a | :03:40. | :03:42.
spokesperson for trading standards said, just because we have noticed | :03:43. | :03:45.
the mistake doesn't mean 20 other people haven't. If you see something | :03:46. | :03:50.
clearly priced, you should expect to pay that. | :03:51. | :03:51.
So what is Tesco doing to put things right? | :03:52. | :03:56.
We sent our dossier of evidence to Tesco. It decided it did not want to | :03:57. | :04:02.
be interviewed but provided a statement saying it takes great care | :04:03. | :04:10.
to deliver accurate tracing to customers. They are disappointed | :04:11. | :04:15.
that there occurred and will be working with the stores involved to | :04:16. | :04:18.
reinforce responsibilities to customers. Since own investigation, | :04:19. | :04:24.
Tesco says it will be double-checking the accuracy of its | :04:25. | :04:28.
prices at every store, that's 3500 stores nationwide. | :04:29. | :04:33.
Jonathan's story has been seen by millions of people on the BBC | :04:34. | :04:36.
News website and lots of you have been telling us about your | :04:37. | :04:39.
And you can watch the full report this evening | :04:40. | :05:13.
on Inside Out West Midlands here on BBC One at 7:30. | :05:14. | :05:21.
The amount of shoplifting from convenience stores | :05:22. | :05:23.
across the country has reached record levels. | :05:24. | :05:26.
A survey of more than 7,000 local UK shopkeepers estimates they're losing | :05:27. | :05:29.
For one beleaguered shop owner in Coventry, | :05:30. | :05:36.
the situation is so bad, he's been forced to put bicycle | :05:37. | :05:39.
This is a man who has reached the end of his tether, so much so, | :05:40. | :05:45.
he's decided to tether the handles of the store's meat fridge because | :05:46. | :05:48.
When a customer comes in, the alarm goes, which alerts our team and one | :05:49. | :05:59.
of them have to come down to uncoveniently open | :06:00. | :06:05.
the padlock for our customers to get into the chillers. | :06:06. | :06:09.
We've had to do this for the amount of theft we've had. | :06:10. | :06:12.
Paul has CCTV, but says it's time-consuming to monitor. | :06:13. | :06:18.
He's also taken to shaming thieves by putting their picture up in store | :06:19. | :06:21.
He says shoplifting is costing his business big time. | :06:22. | :06:26.
Government need to give them more support and resources so we're | :06:27. | :06:36.
all working together in a good partnership. | :06:37. | :06:47.
In statement West Midland Police said: | :06:48. | :07:05.
But the Association of Convenience Stores says 71% | :07:06. | :07:10.
of retailers it surveyed said they were dissatisfied | :07:11. | :07:14.
with the response of police to reports of theft. | :07:15. | :07:18.
For now, Paul says he'll continue to do what it takes | :07:19. | :07:21.
"We can't live like this" - the frustration from families | :07:22. | :07:27.
in Coventry, who say they're suffering from poor health | :07:28. | :07:29.
They say the blame lies at the door of the city's largest | :07:30. | :07:35.
social housing landlord, Whitefriars, which manages more | :07:36. | :07:37.
The tenants got in touch with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire, | :07:38. | :07:43.
It's all behind my children's high chair. | :07:44. | :07:53.
Laura Burch has been living here for four years. | :07:54. | :07:56.
The mould, she says, has been around just as long no | :07:57. | :07:59.
matter how often she cleans it, it keeps returning. | :08:00. | :08:01.
My daughter is coughing through the night. | :08:02. | :08:07.
It's affecting his school work because he's awake | :08:08. | :08:12.
After Laura sent these images to the BBC, Whitefriars did | :08:13. | :08:17.
come round last week to make some repairs. | :08:18. | :08:20.
They've told us they've spent ?1,000 in her flat dealing with damp | :08:21. | :08:29.
and Laura's recent complaints are linked to a minor water leak, | :08:30. | :08:32.
My curtains have gone black and mouldy. | :08:33. | :08:34.
We've uncovered a wider problem on this street in Willenhall. | :08:35. | :08:41.
At almost every home we called at there were signs of mould. | :08:42. | :08:45.
I paint it every three months and it comes back. | :08:46. | :08:48.
And with it anger from tenants who believe Whitefriars | :08:49. | :08:50.
I've redecorated the property about five times in four years. | :08:51. | :08:59.
When something is wrong, they're chasing you, | :09:00. | :09:01.
but when you're chasing them, they're not interested | :09:02. | :09:03.
Whitefriars manages council houses, and last year boasted an 87% | :09:04. | :09:11.
customer satisfaction rate, so when we introduced one leading | :09:12. | :09:14.
councillor to Laura Burch, we were expecting real surprise, | :09:15. | :09:18.
but the surprising truth is he'd seen it all before. | :09:19. | :09:24.
We'll be looking to take this up with the housing ombudsman | :09:25. | :09:28.
because it shouldn't take this kind of pressure and time to get action. | :09:29. | :09:35.
We've seen funding for social housing associations decrease year | :09:36. | :09:38.
on year and we're beginning to see the impact on people's living | :09:39. | :09:42.
No one from Whitefriars could meet us to discuss. | :09:43. | :09:49.
In a statement, they said their homes are "structurally sound" | :09:50. | :09:52.
They claim the vast majority of cases are about condensation, | :09:53. | :09:59.
so they're asking tenants to clean, crank the heating up and ventilate. | :10:00. | :10:05.
West Midlands Police have confirmed that four men have been arrested | :10:06. | :10:14.
in connection with the theft of ?3 million worth of engines, | :10:15. | :10:20.
The machines, which were taken on January 31st, | :10:21. | :10:24.
were recovered from two locations in Warwickshire earlier today. | :10:25. | :10:29.
The men aged 47, 40, 29 and 56 were arrested on suspicion | :10:30. | :10:32.
of conspiracy to steal and have been bailed pending further inquiries. | :10:33. | :10:38.
The Archers actress, Sarah Coward, has died of cancer at the age of 69. | :10:39. | :10:41.
Ms Coward had played Caroline Sterling on the BBC Radio | :10:42. | :10:45.
She was diagnosed with terminal cancer last year, shortly | :10:46. | :10:52.
As well as her regular role in the show, she was also | :10:53. | :10:58.
You may have seen reports over the weekend suggesting | :10:59. | :11:05.
the possibility of President Trump visiting Birmingham, | :11:06. | :11:07.
Venues such as the National Exhibition Centre are apparently | :11:08. | :11:10.
being considered, although details of his visit are yet | :11:11. | :11:13.
This has prompted Labour MP for Hodge Hill, Liam Byrne, | :11:14. | :11:19.
to start an online petition against a Birmingham rally | :11:20. | :11:21.
This is a man who has shown tremendous disdain for veterans, for | :11:22. | :11:34.
women, for telling the truth, for the rule of law and minorities so if | :11:35. | :11:39.
I thought we could bring him to Birmingham, taken out for a curry | :11:40. | :11:43.
and changes made on a few things, I be helping him role that the red | :11:44. | :11:48.
carpet but I think it would be a one-way conversation with massive | :11:49. | :11:53.
demonstrations, a bill that the police would have to pick up and I | :11:54. | :11:57.
guess we got to ask yourself to be want to spend millions hosting an | :11:58. | :12:02.
almighty row that might end up damaging UK and American relations? | :12:03. | :12:06.
Your petition has had just over 1000 signatures. It says the people of | :12:07. | :12:14.
Birmingham are not that fast. We asked people early. | :12:15. | :12:15.
I don't think he should come to a multicultural | :12:16. | :12:17.
I don't think he'd be welcome at all. | :12:18. | :12:20.
I certainly wouldn't welcome him in the slightest. | :12:21. | :12:22.
People should be allowed to go wherever they want, | :12:23. | :12:24.
but he might not get such a good reception. | :12:25. | :12:27.
He might be all right in the town centre, | :12:28. | :12:31.
but if he goes to other areas, he'll probably get a bit | :12:32. | :12:34.
I mean, the alternative is Hillary Clinton, wasn't it, really? | :12:35. | :12:38.
Who should definitely be banned from Birmingham. | :12:39. | :12:47.
Mixed reaction - some of your constituents might feel | :12:48. | :12:49.
there are issues closer to home of greater concern. | :12:50. | :12:53.
How serious do you think it is, the idea of Donald Trump coming here to | :12:54. | :13:00.
the Midlands? I think it could be the Government tried to dig its way | :13:01. | :13:04.
out of a hole so it will be a controversial visit. The security | :13:05. | :13:06.
when he comes to London will be enormous. I wanted to give people | :13:07. | :13:12.
the chance to weigh into the debate if they are opposed to it. I don't | :13:13. | :13:15.
think it's a good idea. I think it will be divisive rather than | :13:16. | :13:21.
unifying but we'll see what people think. I presented the Prime | :13:22. | :13:26.
Minister in the Commons the matter how many people signed. It's my job | :13:27. | :13:31.
to represent the people of my constituency and wider Birmingham. I | :13:32. | :13:35.
would encourage people to debate on my Facebook page. People have said | :13:36. | :13:40.
we should have free speech, but a majority of people have said we do | :13:41. | :13:43.
not want someone like that around here. | :13:44. | :13:50.
If you were watching Midlands Today on Friday, | :13:51. | :13:52.
you'll have seen our exclusive report on the unexpected | :13:53. | :13:54.
A Birmingham organisation which provides therapy | :13:55. | :13:56.
to some of the city's most deprived children. | :13:57. | :13:59.
A week and a half ago, Alison Selvey who runs the company, | :14:00. | :14:01.
This raised questions, whether money paid by schools to the organisation | :14:02. | :14:06.
Since our report Ms Selvey has been in touch and Elizabeth Glinka | :14:07. | :14:13.
The Big Community had contracts with dozens of schools, | :14:14. | :14:20.
supporting children dealing with everything from divorce | :14:21. | :14:22.
to domestic violence, so when news broke they were in trouble it | :14:23. | :14:26.
created some panic, something director Alison | :14:27. | :14:28.
We've worked really hard so when the decision came for me | :14:29. | :14:34.
to close down the company, it was never going | :14:35. | :14:36.
Can you understand people would be confused? | :14:37. | :14:42.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and could I have communicated | :14:43. | :14:51.
Alison says Big Community has helped 40,000 children over the years | :14:52. | :15:01.
and is still completing its contracts in some schools. | :15:02. | :15:04.
In 2015-2016, Birmingham City Council says it paid | :15:05. | :15:06.
the organisation ?140,000 and that's in addition to the academies | :15:07. | :15:11.
where the company has individual contracts, | :15:12. | :15:15.
so there is now concern about what will happen | :15:16. | :15:19.
To be clear, any school which has paid your oganisation and may now | :15:20. | :15:27.
not get the service, will they get their money back? | :15:28. | :15:31.
Any money owed to schools will get their money back at the end | :15:32. | :15:34.
I would never leave schools or children vulnerable in Birmingham. | :15:35. | :15:38.
It's not me and anybody who knows me and has worked with me | :15:39. | :15:41.
Alison says it's now the responsibility of the Council | :15:42. | :15:46.
to fill the gap left by the demise of Big Community. | :15:47. | :15:53.
Growing up with two profoundly deaf parents meant Wayne Barrow learned | :15:54. | :15:58.
sign language before he could speak English. | :15:59. | :16:00.
It's a skill that's now winning him hundreds of thousands | :16:01. | :16:03.
Wayne, from Birmingham, regularly posts videos of himself | :16:04. | :16:06.
He's also started a petition to get sign language put | :16:07. | :16:12.
Classic hits with a twist all courtesy of Wayne Barrow | :16:13. | :16:31.
His Sign Language renditions have proved popular on the Internet | :16:32. | :16:37.
with one video getting 1.2 million views. | :16:38. | :16:41.
They're also getting a positive response closer to home. | :16:42. | :16:49.
It's almost opened up a new world to my mum, because she has never really | :16:50. | :16:57.
understood any music before so it is making her realise what music is all | :16:58. | :16:58.
about. Both Wayne's parents | :16:59. | :16:59.
are profoundly deaf. The popularity of his signed pop has | :17:00. | :17:02.
encouraged him to start a petition asking for British Sign Language | :17:03. | :17:05.
to be included on the Just knowing those signs | :17:06. | :17:08.
can make a huge impact. I thought I was getting all these | :17:09. | :17:21.
views and thought it was the perfect opportunity to get involved in the | :17:22. | :17:26.
petition because it seemed to have such a big response. | :17:27. | :17:30.
At Dunchurch Bowton Junior School near Rugby, they're already | :17:31. | :17:33.
Last week, these children took part in Sign2Sing, | :17:34. | :17:39.
an annual fundraising event to help deaf charities. | :17:40. | :17:41.
They've learned to sign have to learn to sign | :17:42. | :17:43.
Is hard at first when you're just learning signs that you can't really | :17:44. | :17:56.
control and then next you just get on with it. You get practising. Once | :17:57. | :18:02.
you keep on practising, it just comes to you and will be able to do | :18:03. | :18:06.
it quicker. It would be good if everybody could communicate to deaf | :18:07. | :18:13.
people. More than 12,000 people have signed the petition. If it is | :18:14. | :18:17.
successful, needed there will be a new way of signing off our reports | :18:18. | :18:24.
one day. Wayne and Lizzie for BBC Midlands Today. | :18:25. | :18:25.
Let's talk about the weekend's sporting action with Dan. | :18:26. | :18:27.
Not a bad weekend for our Premier League clubs, | :18:28. | :18:31.
Our four teams in the championship will be hoping for a quick recovery | :18:32. | :18:44.
after failing to win a point between them and they became. It was a | :18:45. | :18:48.
miserable weekend in the second tier. At least three of them have | :18:49. | :18:49.
the chance to bounce back. Let's get the pain | :18:50. | :18:50.
over and done with. From Birmingham City's Friday night | :18:51. | :18:54.
humbling at Sheffield Wednesday to Burton's 4-1 defeat at Brighton, | :18:55. | :18:56.
it was pointless weekend And both Wolves and Aston | :18:57. | :18:58.
Villa lost 1-0 at home. Villa conceded a late winner | :18:59. | :19:04.
to Ipswich's only shot on target. And Wolves lost to | :19:05. | :19:10.
table-topping Newcastle. At least they still have the FA | :19:11. | :19:11.
Cup to look forward to. Our Premier League | :19:12. | :19:15.
teams fared better. Stoke City beat Crystal Palace 1-0 | :19:16. | :19:21.
thanks to this excellent goal. I got a few earlier in the season | :19:22. | :19:24.
when I first played there. I had a bit of a drought | :19:25. | :19:33.
so thankfully I got one today and hopefully I'll go on another | :19:34. | :19:36.
little run again. There was late drama at West Ham - | :19:37. | :19:38.
the home side thought they'd got a late winner when Manuel Lanzini | :19:39. | :19:41.
scored a stunner on 86 minutes. But Albion have great battling | :19:42. | :19:44.
qualities and deep into injury time, Johnny Evans headed an equaliser | :19:45. | :19:49.
for a 2-2 draw. The West Ham manager Slaven Bilic | :19:50. | :19:51.
was less than impressed. Shrewsbury Town were our second team | :19:52. | :19:57.
to win at the weekend, Freddie Ladapo scored | :19:58. | :20:00.
the winner again. His goals are helping | :20:01. | :20:06.
Shrewsbury climb away So not much to cheer | :20:07. | :20:07.
on the football front, but there were some great stories | :20:08. | :20:14.
in rugby union. That remarkable game | :20:15. | :20:17.
at Cardiff on Saturday. The match wining try came | :20:18. | :20:22.
from Wasps' Elliot Daly as England came from behind to beat Wales 21 | :20:23. | :20:25.
points to 16. Wasps gain further credit and lock | :20:26. | :20:27.
forward Joe Launchbury The Premiership also | :20:28. | :20:29.
returned this weekend. A defeat for Gloucester, | :20:30. | :20:42.
a draw for Wasps, and a memorable And so important in terms | :20:43. | :20:44.
of their survival. Saracens are the European Champions | :20:45. | :20:49.
but they were weakened Ryans Mills scored all | :20:50. | :20:51.
of Worcester's points kicking eight And it gives Worcester | :20:52. | :20:57.
a five-point cushion over I was worried when I heard the | :20:58. | :21:23.
commentators saying that wasps had shot themselves in the foot! | :21:24. | :21:24.
And on Friday we featured Hartpury and their domination | :21:25. | :21:29.
They scored seven tries. Let's just see one of them. The top of league | :21:30. | :21:47.
one, absolutely flying. Promotion is guaranteed. The coach said he was | :21:48. | :21:54.
very disappointed to concede four tries. | :21:55. | :21:57.
You've heard the story of how Cinderella got | :21:58. | :21:59.
to the ball, but did you know the Birmingham Royal Ballet's | :22:00. | :22:02.
production needed the power of some 4,000 horses to make | :22:03. | :22:05.
As the company's huge convoy of trucks rolled into the city, | :22:06. | :22:12.
Ben Sidwell was invited back stage to see Cinders return | :22:13. | :22:14.
home to the Hippodrome for the final leg of the tour. | :22:15. | :22:26.
It's not just the dancers who have to perfect their moves | :22:27. | :22:29.
when the Birmingham Royal Ballet go on tour. | :22:30. | :22:37.
Birmingham is always our biggest presentation, where we have | :22:38. | :22:43.
everything, the whole stage available to us. Through just what | :22:44. | :22:47.
is needed to take a show like this on the road? They got ten | :22:48. | :22:52.
articulated lorries full of scenery, costumes, lighting and a stage and | :22:53. | :22:56.
of course Cinderella's coach. They also need more than 150 people, | :22:57. | :23:01.
staff, dancers and musicians and it costs tens of thousands of pounds | :23:02. | :23:06.
every week just to get Cinderella onto the stage. Certainly in the | :23:07. | :23:12.
ballet world it is a big lighting thing. In terms of rock 'n' roll, | :23:13. | :23:19.
maybe not as many lights, but in terms of theatre, it's right up | :23:20. | :23:24.
there with one of the biggest lighting sets. Let me explain some | :23:25. | :23:29.
of the technical challenges. They hippodrome stage is one of the | :23:30. | :23:32.
biggest stages anywhere in the country. Sunderland, one of the | :23:33. | :23:39.
features, the stage comes to about here. Just about half the size of | :23:40. | :23:44.
Birmingham, yet they have to fit all of this on to that. The dancers may | :23:45. | :23:52.
be the start of the show but they know just how important the | :23:53. | :23:57.
backstage team are. -- stars of the show. They work through the night | :23:58. | :24:00.
and they are at every venue before us setting it up and everything. We | :24:01. | :24:05.
make sure the floor and scenery are perfect and put the light in the | :24:06. | :24:08.
right place and by the time the dancers get there, everything is set | :24:09. | :24:17.
up perfectly for us. Cinderella is on the Birmingham hippodrome from | :24:18. | :24:21.
the 50s to the 25th of February before heading out on tour around | :24:22. | :24:22.
the country. -- 15th. An iPad featuring this wedding | :24:23. | :24:29.
day photo was handed into West Midlands Police | :24:30. | :24:35.
and officers are asking The image has been shared on social | :24:36. | :24:39.
media in the hope of getting the iPad back to its owners ahead | :24:40. | :24:43.
of Valentine's Day. Anyone with information is asked | :24:44. | :24:45.
to contact police on 101. It would have felt like spring today | :24:46. | :25:09.
if it wasn't for the southeasterly breeze but temperatures have | :25:10. | :25:12.
improved since yesterday. Plenty of sunshine right across the region and | :25:13. | :25:16.
some definite tell-tale signs of spring. This is how the rest of the | :25:17. | :25:20.
week is looking. Warmer days ahead of us but the Knights could be on be | :25:21. | :25:24.
chilly side and development of cloud initially but then we could see some | :25:25. | :25:28.
breaks in the cloud and brighter spells developing by the weekend. | :25:29. | :25:32.
Right now we're between high pressure to the east and low | :25:33. | :25:36.
pressure to the west and the low pressure is going to start driving | :25:37. | :25:40.
through some troughs and weather systems from the Atlantic but the | :25:41. | :25:44.
main difference is the wind. It starts to veer from southeasterly to | :25:45. | :25:48.
southerly and eventually westerly by mid week so this is what is going to | :25:49. | :25:52.
be drawing in the milder air. Through this evening, we start with | :25:53. | :25:56.
clear spells across the region. The cloud is going to bring clear spells | :25:57. | :26:05.
and temperatures remain above freezing around 123 Celsius -- one | :26:06. | :26:15.
and three Celsius. Where we get cloud spells, it will be cold and we | :26:16. | :26:22.
can see mist patches and fog tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, the | :26:23. | :26:25.
global start to thicken and across the region it will spread so there | :26:26. | :26:31.
will be flickers of brightness so a cloudy day than today and light, | :26:32. | :26:35.
patchy rain developing from the southwest but temperatures will rise | :26:36. | :26:39.
to between six and nine Celsius tomorrow so perhaps a touch milder | :26:40. | :26:44.
than it was today and that wind will be easing from the southeasterly | :26:45. | :26:48.
direction. We keep hold off that cloud through tomorrow night so | :26:49. | :26:54.
we've got those spits of rain and temperatures will be higher tonight, | :26:55. | :26:58.
down to about five or six Celsius and that continues into Wednesday, | :26:59. | :27:00.
so a cloudy, damp start to the week. Tomorrow, we'll be meeting Molly the | :27:01. | :27:13.
rescue dog. She's having a pacemaker fitted following a charity appeal | :27:14. | :27:17.
that has raised over ?3000 for the operation. You can find out how it | :27:18. | :27:19.
goes at 6:30pm tomorrow evening. | :27:20. | :27:22. |
