A thousand new jobs for Coventry - the UK's first factory making | :00:07. | :00:11.
It is great news, massive Chinese investment in the UK and the | :00:12. | :00:22.
demonstrates the confidence the world has in a designed and made UK | :00:23. | :00:24.
brand. We'll be reporting live | :00:25. | :00:27.
from the factory in Coventry - a state of the art facility built | :00:28. | :00:29.
with Chinese money. Also tonight, in the wake | :00:30. | :00:32.
of the terrorist attack in Westminster, a check on Midlands | :00:33. | :00:34.
MPs in the Parliament lockdown. The killer convicted | :00:35. | :00:36.
by a piece of chewing gum more It offers the family some sense of | :00:37. | :00:54.
closure that the person responsible has been brought to justice. | :00:55. | :00:59.
Very rare and close to dying out - how Britain's oldest breed of goats | :01:00. | :01:02.
is being saved at a farm in West Bromwich. | :01:03. | :01:07.
As we head towards the weekend high pressure is in charge. I will be | :01:08. | :01:13.
back with more details a little later. | :01:14. | :01:17.
The UK's first factory dedicated solely to electric-vehicle | :01:18. | :01:22.
The London Taxi Company's invested more than ?300 million | :01:23. | :01:29.
It'll create more than a thousand new jobs as the plant has capacity | :01:30. | :01:35.
Our transport correspondent, Peter Plisner, is at the factory | :01:36. | :01:39.
Peter, this a real boost to the automotive | :01:40. | :01:42.
It certainly is - when you consider that it could have been built | :01:43. | :01:50.
This new taxi factory is the size of around five football pitches. | :01:51. | :01:59.
And it's the region's biggest single Chinese investment. | :02:00. | :02:02.
Here they'll make black cabs for both the UK | :02:03. | :02:05.
A massive leap forward for taxi technology. | :02:06. | :02:14.
Diesel engines are on the way out and in come | :02:15. | :02:16.
Amongst the thousand staff being recruited here, | :02:17. | :02:20.
apprentices like Abbie Ferrar - braving a male-dominated industry. | :02:21. | :02:24.
I just always wanted to do engineering and Manufacturing. My | :02:25. | :02:33.
dad is a Manufacturing Ember near and I always wanted to be like him. | :02:34. | :02:40.
This line of vehicles shows taxis through the ages all of which have | :02:41. | :02:45.
been traditionally built in Coventry, and this one is no | :02:46. | :02:48.
exception but it is being built in this state-of-the-art factory. | :02:49. | :02:50.
But with a range of around 70 miles on one charge, | :02:51. | :02:53.
London cabbies like Steve MacNammara are worried. | :02:54. | :02:54.
The reality is, at the moment in London there is one charge point | :02:55. | :03:01.
within six miles of Charing Cross. It is a crazy situation. | :03:02. | :03:03.
And they won't be cheap either - rumoured to have a price | :03:04. | :03:06.
Although the company's chief executive says lower running | :03:07. | :03:09.
When you look at the monthly payments in terms of buying the | :03:10. | :03:18.
vehicle, coupled with what it costs in fuel, which will be much lower, | :03:19. | :03:22.
coupled with the lower maintenance costs, the monthly cost of running | :03:23. | :03:28.
this vehicle is not only competitive with today's, it is better. | :03:29. | :03:30.
And it's not just the London Taxi Company that's relying | :03:31. | :03:32.
At this Redditch-based laser-cutting firm they're hoping to expand | :03:33. | :03:36.
as a result of supplying a variety parts. | :03:37. | :03:38.
as a result of supplying a variety of parts. | :03:39. | :03:42.
We are doing really well, we have other suppliers we working with, | :03:43. | :03:46.
everybody is benefiting. Analysts maintain that it's a big | :03:47. | :03:47.
vote of confidence in the region. It is great news, massive investment | :03:48. | :03:56.
by the Chinese in the UK, and demonstrate the confidence that the | :03:57. | :04:00.
world has in a designed and made in the UK ran. -- brand. | :04:01. | :04:05.
Four years ago, the old London Taxi Company went bust. | :04:06. | :04:07.
Now it's entering a new era in its 70-year history | :04:08. | :04:10.
with this new factory, and in the future they could also | :04:11. | :04:12.
be building electric vans as well as taxis. | :04:13. | :04:14.
Peter joins us again from the new factory. | :04:15. | :04:16.
Those issues about the range of the new vehicle between charges | :04:17. | :04:19.
A 70 mile range might not sound like much but in London taxis only do use | :04:20. | :04:34.
short hops and get stuck in congestion. A more serious issue is | :04:35. | :04:39.
the lack of charging stations, particularly rapid charge stations, | :04:40. | :04:43.
where you can charge to about 80% in about 20 minutes. There is only one | :04:44. | :04:48.
of those in London. Today the Business Secretary Greg Clark | :04:49. | :04:53.
announced ?40 million worth of funding for more charging stations | :04:54. | :04:56.
so hopefully that will make a difference. This vehicle also has a | :04:57. | :05:02.
small generator on-board that can charge the battery as it is going | :05:03. | :05:06.
along, but then of course it ceases to be zero emission. | :05:07. | :05:07.
Good news for the region, but how much of the new taxi | :05:08. | :05:10.
is being supplied from the West Midlands? | :05:11. | :05:12.
We found several companies supplying parts that even the London Taxi | :05:13. | :05:19.
Company admit is not as much as they would like, they have promised to do | :05:20. | :05:24.
more. When the new van comes out hopefully they will be able to | :05:25. | :05:26.
redress the balance. As we've been hearing, Westminster | :05:27. | :05:32.
remains on high alert this evening, after what's thought to have been | :05:33. | :05:35.
a terrorist incident close Three schools from our region | :05:36. | :05:37.
were on trips there today, but all are thought to be | :05:38. | :05:41.
safe and well. Numerous MPs, including many | :05:42. | :05:43.
from the Midlands, are still locked inside the Palace of Westminster | :05:44. | :05:46.
as searches continue. Elizabeth Glinka has been following | :05:47. | :05:49.
the story and joins me now. A dramatic afternoon - | :05:50. | :05:52.
what more can you tell us? Well, it's been a very | :05:53. | :05:54.
dramatic day indeed, with events continuing | :05:55. | :05:56.
to develop minute by minute. Some pretty upsetting scenes, | :05:57. | :06:03.
and just like the rest of the country many people from this | :06:04. | :06:05.
region have been caught up in it. The Lichfield MP Michael | :06:06. | :06:08.
Fabricant was on his way to a vote in the House of Commons | :06:09. | :06:10.
when events started to unfold. I heard what I now realise | :06:11. | :06:21.
workshops. A lot of worried looking Members of Parliament and others | :06:22. | :06:28.
were running towards me shouting, get back, get back. Then a police | :06:29. | :06:31.
officer started shouting, get back, as well. | :06:32. | :06:39.
We are hearing that a number of French schoolchildren were on a trip | :06:40. | :06:43.
there and they were injured. What can you tell us about the Midlands | :06:44. | :06:47.
schoolchildren? Yes, there were three schools | :06:48. | :06:48.
from the Midlands on trips There were Rugby High School, | :06:49. | :06:50.
Balsall Common Primary School, and Holy Family Catholic Primary | :06:51. | :06:54.
School, from Birmingham. Having spoken to the schools we know | :06:55. | :06:56.
that thankfully Rugby High School had left just before this happened | :06:57. | :06:59.
and are now home. The children from Balsall Common | :07:00. | :07:01.
are all safe and well - I heard earlier they were | :07:02. | :07:04.
on their coaches on the way home. Now, the children from | :07:05. | :07:07.
Holy Family Catholic Primary were inside Parliament | :07:08. | :07:09.
when the attack happened - we can see a picture of them | :07:10. | :07:13.
from earlier in the day, actually on Westminster Bridge, | :07:14. | :07:17.
where the attack started. Now, those children have been | :07:18. | :07:21.
involved in the lockdown at Parliament, no-one allowed | :07:22. | :07:25.
in or out while searches were going on, but we have had | :07:26. | :07:27.
a statement from the head teacher, He says "All the children | :07:28. | :07:30.
on the school trip are safe and their parents have been informed | :07:31. | :07:34.
of the situation. The deputy head teacher | :07:35. | :07:36.
is with the children and is providing me | :07:37. | :07:38.
with regular updates." Just before six o'clock this evening | :07:39. | :07:48.
those children were finally allowed out of the Parliament buildings. | :07:49. | :07:53.
Reactions to the events has been coming through thick and fast. | :07:54. | :07:59.
It has, Parliament is a major tourist attraction, thousands of | :08:00. | :08:02.
people there every day. Lots of people writing on social media. The | :08:03. | :08:07.
Stoke South MP was describing the situation on Twitter... | :08:08. | :08:26.
25-year-old Fraser Clark was one of a group of boxes. -- boxers. We now | :08:27. | :08:40.
know that one officer has been confirmed dead. | :08:41. | :08:42.
A Birmingham man's been sentenced to 12 years in prison | :08:43. | :08:44.
Osmond Bell was found guilty of the manslaughter | :08:45. | :08:47.
But it was a piece of chewing gum and modern-day DNA technology that | :08:48. | :08:54.
actually led to the breakthrough in the 36-year-old case. | :08:55. | :09:04.
Our special correspondent, Peter Wilson, has been | :09:05. | :09:05.
Nova Welsh was a happy, extrovert young woman aged just 24. | :09:06. | :09:11.
In July 1981, she was living in this block of flats | :09:12. | :09:14.
She had recently split from Osmond Bell, the father | :09:15. | :09:17.
of her two children, complaining about his | :09:18. | :09:19.
Then one night she simply disappeared. | :09:20. | :09:24.
Osmond Bell did not report her missing. | :09:25. | :09:27.
He told friends he thought she had gone to London. | :09:28. | :09:30.
In fact she'd been strangled, her neck broken. | :09:31. | :09:44.
It wasn't for another three weeks that her body was discovered | :09:45. | :09:47.
The killer had forced the lock on the cupboard door. | :09:48. | :09:51.
He needed something to fix the door to conceal the body. | :09:52. | :09:53.
The only thing he had was a piece of chewing gum. | :09:54. | :09:59.
To deceitfully show that that cupboard hadn't been forced open, | :10:00. | :10:04.
a piece of chewing gum was used to stick the lock back on and of | :10:05. | :10:07.
course with the advancements of DNA technology in the last 35 years | :10:08. | :10:10.
we were able to send that piece of chewing gum off | :10:11. | :10:13.
and find Osman Bell's DNA on that chewing gum. | :10:14. | :10:16.
This is the pink chewing gum turned brown by brick dust and dirt. | :10:17. | :10:19.
At the time, DNA forensics had not been invented. | :10:20. | :10:21.
But it wasn't the only DNA link to the case. | :10:22. | :10:24.
Police examined a letter that was written before | :10:25. | :10:26.
An anonymous letter claiming to have been written by a woman, | :10:27. | :10:44.
it pointed the finger of suspicion not at Osmond Bell but another man. | :10:45. | :10:48.
In 1981 Bell was the main suspect but he was never charged. | :10:49. | :10:51.
Then two years ago it was tested using the latest DNA techniques. | :10:52. | :11:00.
From the lipseal on that letter we found Osmond Bell's DNA on it. | :11:01. | :11:03.
Actually what that letter did, Osmond Bell co-authored it | :11:04. | :11:07.
or assisted, had some part in sending that letter. | :11:08. | :11:09.
trying to blame Nova's disappearance and ultimately her | :11:10. | :11:12.
Today Osmond Bell was found guilty of manslaughter. | :11:13. | :11:17.
Her mother gave this reaction to his sentence of 12 years | :11:18. | :11:21.
for the death of a much-loved daughter, sister and mother. | :11:22. | :11:25.
Finally, after 36 long years, she can rest in peace... | :11:26. | :11:39.
After 30 years, to be able to convicted a man of manslaughter in a | :11:40. | :11:52.
case were Nova's family had kept in touch with the police, it is a | :11:53. | :11:55.
really good achievement. Nova Welsh and Osmond | :11:56. | :11:57.
Bell had two sons. By all accounts, | :11:58. | :11:59.
he's been a good dad. I understand the boys, now grown | :12:00. | :12:03.
men, are completely bewildered, devastated that their father has | :12:04. | :12:05.
proved to be their mother's killer. Police are investigating reports | :12:06. | :12:12.
that gunshots were fired in a residential area of Birmingham | :12:13. | :12:14.
in the early hours of this morning. A man was found lying | :12:15. | :12:18.
on Hamstead Road in Lozells It's thought he'd been dragged | :12:19. | :12:20.
from a car and assaulted. The area between Soho Hill | :12:21. | :12:24.
and Villa Road was cordoned Midland Metro Services are to be | :12:25. | :12:27.
taken over by Transport for West Midlands as part | :12:28. | :12:34.
of a multi-million-pound The trams, which have been operated | :12:35. | :12:35.
by National Express for 18 years, run from Wolverhampton | :12:36. | :12:40.
to New Street Station. Plans include an extension of routes | :12:41. | :12:44.
through Birmingham city centre and new routes for the Black | :12:45. | :12:46.
Country. The handover is planned for October | :12:47. | :12:51.
2018, with new services expected A postmaster's been describing | :12:52. | :12:53.
the moment he was tied up and robbed by masked men during one | :12:54. | :13:01.
of his regular drop-in Steve Bentley says he's | :13:02. | :13:03.
so traumatised that he may give up, leaving the Shropshire village | :13:04. | :13:12.
of High Ercall without the few hours of post-office services | :13:13. | :13:15.
people there rely on. There are about 700 similar | :13:16. | :13:17.
services around the country. It's not a place you'd associate | :13:18. | :13:19.
with violent robbery. High Ercall in Shropshire | :13:20. | :13:24.
lost its post office two years ago, leaving a limited service twice | :13:25. | :13:27.
a week from the village hall. But that's currently closed, | :13:28. | :13:30.
after this happened. They were shouting and screaming. | :13:31. | :13:47.
They tied my hands behind my back. Grabbed at the cash box, waved his | :13:48. | :13:52.
pickaxe handle around a bit, smashed it on the desk. | :13:53. | :13:53.
was robbed by two masked men, who stole ?2000 and his Jaguar. | :13:54. | :13:58.
I have to consider what the next move is. It isn't feasible to | :13:59. | :14:09.
consider opening the post office in the same way it used to operate. | :14:10. | :14:11.
There needs to be real security. Steve's working | :14:12. | :14:13.
closely with detectives, You wouldn't expect this kind of | :14:14. | :14:22.
thing to happen, just trying to do a nice thing for the community, some | :14:23. | :14:27.
security is going to be an issue. Are you advising him about how to | :14:28. | :14:32.
improve that? Yes, those things are ongoing. | :14:33. | :14:33.
Steve says he feels safer at Waters Upton Post Office. | :14:34. | :14:37.
That is three miles away and there isn't a bus to get there. | :14:38. | :14:49.
Back in High Ercall, people are concerned about the future. | :14:50. | :14:53.
A lot of ladies are depending on that service and I think it's sad. | :14:54. | :15:01.
It needs to be safer but I wouldn't like to lose the post office for the | :15:02. | :15:03.
future. The Post Office declined | :15:04. | :15:05.
an interview, but told us they were supporting Steve | :15:06. | :15:07.
and the police. But in the meantime the village-hall | :15:08. | :15:11.
service remains closed. Quiz question for you - | :15:12. | :15:14.
what's the oldest breed Well, it's thought to be the rare | :15:15. | :15:17.
black-and-white Bagot goat, but their numbers have | :15:18. | :15:25.
been fast diminishing. Now, with fewer than 200 females | :15:26. | :15:26.
registered in the UK, a special breeding programme's | :15:27. | :15:30.
under way in the Black Laura May McMullan has been along | :15:31. | :15:32.
to Sandwell Valley Country Park to see the initial and enchanting | :15:33. | :15:36.
results of the programme - Just over three weeks old, | :15:37. | :15:38.
and still finding their feet. They're the first baby | :15:39. | :15:50.
Bagot goats to be born since a special breeding programme | :15:51. | :15:53.
was introduced last November. It's quite overwhelming sometimes | :15:54. | :16:09.
seeing new birth being brought in. And it is amazing because we kind of | :16:10. | :16:11.
saving the breed. It's believed there are less | :16:12. | :16:15.
than 200 registered breeding females left in the country and so the aim | :16:16. | :16:17.
of this conservation programme IV, who I have to say is my | :16:18. | :16:32.
favourite, is aged 14. -- Ivy. She produced two grade a embryos, which | :16:33. | :16:36.
I am very pleased with. insemination methods and so far four | :16:37. | :16:38.
grade-A embryos have been harvested them into the Rare Breeds | :16:39. | :16:41.
Survival Trust's gene bank. We are over the moon with the | :16:42. | :16:55.
results we have had from the embryo transfer service. | :16:56. | :16:58.
This is the first time this has ever been done with primitive goats. | :16:59. | :17:02.
Bagots are the oldest breed in Britain | :17:03. | :17:03.
and it's hoped the fertility programme will now help to preserve | :17:04. | :17:06.
Thanks for joining us on Midlands Today. | :17:07. | :17:16.
A thousand new jobs for Coventry - the UK's first factory making | :17:17. | :17:23.
Filthy day weather-wise, but Rebecca assures me it'll | :17:24. | :17:29.
A tiny glimmer of hope for Coventry City last night, | :17:30. | :17:35.
as they beat relegation rivals Port Vale at the Ricoh. | :17:36. | :17:39.
And revealed once more - an ancient church mural that's been | :17:40. | :17:42.
Professional cricketers are one of the groups | :17:43. | :17:54.
most at risk for developing an addiction to gambling, | :17:55. | :17:56.
More than 60% of them admit to having a wager | :17:57. | :18:01.
So a former addict is now touring every county club to advise | :18:02. | :18:07.
the teams on how to tell if it's becoming a major problem. | :18:08. | :18:10.
What I am trying to do with these sessions is make it something we can | :18:11. | :18:23.
talk about, same as mental health, depression... | :18:24. | :18:25.
On the surface Paul Buck was a successful financial advisor | :18:26. | :18:27.
In reality he had a pathological gambling problem. | :18:28. | :18:30.
He lost more than a million pounds before attempting to kill himself | :18:31. | :18:33.
Today he was at New Road to alert Worcestershire's players | :18:34. | :18:37.
Even for those who don't gamble, it is great that they get an insight | :18:38. | :18:45.
into what a problem gambler would be feeling and doing, their | :18:46. | :18:49.
characteristics, so they could help intervene for lawyers in the squad | :18:50. | :18:52.
who may have an issue. You spend a lot of time with your team-mates, | :18:53. | :18:57.
especially in summer in hotel rooms up and down the country, so you | :18:58. | :19:02.
probably know them as well as anybody does, so it is good that we | :19:03. | :19:03.

A beautiful work of art hidden away in a church in Coventry is to be | :23:21. | :23:24.
restored and put back on public display. | :23:25. | :23:26.
The mural, known as Ascension, was painted at St Mark's Church | :23:27. | :23:28.
near the city centre by a renowned Jewish-German artist | :23:29. | :23:31.
But it was hidden behind a wall when the church was converted | :23:32. | :23:34.
to a hospital outpatients' unit in the 1970s. | :23:35. | :23:36.
St Mark's Church in Hillfields in Coventry, once an NHS clinic, | :23:37. | :23:40.
now being reverted back to a place of worship. | :23:41. | :23:45.
Inside, the medical fittings and partitioned walls remain, | :23:46. | :23:48.
but behind one wall a gem which has been hidden for all that time. | :23:49. | :23:52.
Known as Ascension, this mural was painted by renowned Jewish | :23:53. | :23:55.
artist Hans Feibusch, who fled Nazi Germany | :23:56. | :23:57.
He was taken on by the Bishop of Chichester, who wanted to bring art | :23:58. | :24:10.
into churches, and there is a beautiful piece in Chichester | :24:11. | :24:14.
Cathedral, and from that his fame grew. He has painted murals like | :24:15. | :24:20.
this in over 40 churches in the country and also in civic buildings. | :24:21. | :24:25.
The nearest one to hear being in Dudley town Hall. | :24:26. | :24:28.
The Church was damaged during the Coventry Blitz and it led | :24:29. | :24:31.
to a window in the chancel wall being destroyed. | :24:32. | :24:33.
Lack of funds led to it being bricked up and the mural | :24:34. | :24:36.
We are going to renovate the building so the remnants of what was | :24:37. | :24:44.
left by the NHS will be cleared out and it will be turned back into a | :24:45. | :24:48.
church, bring life back into this building. | :24:49. | :24:49.
It's hoped a new congregation can be generated from, | :24:50. | :24:51.
in part, new student housing being built nearby. | :24:52. | :24:58.
Well, as you can see, the builders are now here | :24:59. | :25:02.
The church is appealing for anybody who may have been married or | :25:03. | :25:14.
christened here to come forward with their memories. | :25:15. | :25:16.
The information will be used in an exhibition, | :25:17. | :25:18.
and in the meantime other aspects of this beautiful church | :25:19. | :25:20.
Time for the weather, and Rebecca's ever-changing mural. | :25:21. | :25:23.
Dark, dank and dismal - the only words for it today, Rebecca? | :25:24. | :25:30.
I am afraid so but we are going to peel back the layers and reveal | :25:31. | :25:37.
something a bit more pleasant. It is an improving picture out there but | :25:38. | :25:42.
the same can't be said for today. Dull, damp, grey, miserable, | :25:43. | :25:46.
temperatures struggling. In Hereford today we got just five Celsius at | :25:47. | :25:53.
one point last week we were 12 degrees higher. There was some hail | :25:54. | :25:56.
in the rain, some thunder, and it was dull and damp today, but through | :25:57. | :26:03.
the afternoon we started to see the cloud and rain retreat northwards | :26:04. | :26:06.
and we started to see the cloud breaking up to give some brighter | :26:07. | :26:10.
spells to end the day. For some spots it certainly wasn't too bad | :26:11. | :26:14.
for the last couple of hours. Through this weekend we will start | :26:15. | :26:18.
to see things improving and in fact it all starts from tomorrow. It will | :26:19. | :26:24.
be much drier, some sunny spells, but with clear spells overnight | :26:25. | :26:30.
Thomas overnight frosts, and tonight it is chilly. Skies clearing | :26:31. | :26:33.
initially, a few more holes in the cloud allowing mist patches to | :26:34. | :26:41.
develop, but the rain will work its way back in. Temperatures from one | :26:42. | :26:47.
to three degrees overnight. We have a battle tomorrow morning, high | :26:48. | :26:50.
pressure building, pushing that low pressure which have driven our | :26:51. | :26:57.
whether further south. It will nag along the south of the country, but | :26:58. | :27:02.
once it pushes away tomorrow we will see things brightening up. The sun | :27:03. | :27:05.
coming out, bit of cloud here and there through the afternoon but | :27:06. | :27:09.
largely dry and temperatures back into double figures. With light | :27:10. | :27:14.
winds it won't feel too bad at all. By the end of the day we see the | :27:15. | :27:21.
skies clearing before that cloud comes in. Friday, dry and bright, | :27:22. | :27:29.
the cloud starting to break, and by Saturday much better weather and we | :27:30. | :27:33.
might see temperatures back up to 15 or 16 Celsius. | :27:34. | :27:37. |
