That's all from the BBC News at Six, so it's goodbye from me,

:00:00.:00:07.

The headlines tonight: Killed by a car being pursued by police,

:00:08.:00:11.

a 45-year-old pedestrian dies in Birmingham City centre.

:00:12.:00:13.

The hit and run driver had been chased by police for seven miles

:00:14.:00:16.

I am shocked. I live in this area. I see cars lining up and going

:00:17.:00:26.

high-speed and they are raising the motorbikes everyday.

:00:27.:00:30.

Also tonight: I'm at a mosque

:00:31.:00:34.

in Birmingham where a multi-faith vigil is being held

:00:35.:00:36.

to remember those who died in London's terror attacks.

The pursuit began in the north Birmingham suburb of Erdington -

seven miles away in the city centre the Mondeo went through a red light

Moments later the collision happened - the Mondeo then sped off.

More than 12 hours after this accident, the road is just about to

reopen, the hunt for the driver continues. Police are urging him to

:02:50.:02:50.

give himself up. Locals say they're tired of traffic

:02:51.:02:52.

speeding past their doors. Totally outrageous. I am shocked. I

:03:08.:03:12.

me, it is an accident waiting to go off. Along this road it is like a

:03:13.:03:18.

racetrack. And I would hope that they would put the cameras back

:03:19.:03:19.

because this would save lives. The road closure led to congestion

is at the Darulbarakat Mosque in Birmingham, where vigil

:03:46.:03:52.

is taking place, Nicola. Yes, well, this vigil

:03:53.:03:57.

has been organised by the Small Heath Multi Faith Forum

:03:58.:04:00.

to pay their respects It follows on from a number

:04:01.:04:02.

of vigils which took place this weekend -

:04:03.:04:06.

including a demonstration that was held in Victoria

:04:07.:04:07.

Square in Birmingham. Joining me now is Toby Ephraim

:04:08.:04:16.

who is of the organisers. Why was it important for you to

:04:17.:04:26.

organise this? It is important because we would like to pay tribute

:04:27.:04:34.

to the family of the PC who died and those who were injured. The

:04:35.:04:38.

community now seem to be so divided and it is very important that the

:04:39.:04:43.

community comes together to see that this has nothing to do with faith

:04:44.:04:49.

and the community needs to see that they can work together to remove

:04:50.:04:53.

misunderstanding. You mention that the community feels divided. What is

:04:54.:04:57.

the feeling in the community now? Today when you see how people look

:04:58.:05:00.

on each other, whether you are Muslim or Christian or another

:05:01.:05:05.

faith, today is not the time to prove our faith but what matters

:05:06.:05:10.

today is to see that we understand as a human being because we are all

:05:11.:05:16.

from Adam and Eve regardless of the faith we have, but we have to bear

:05:17.:05:20.

in mind that we are only human and yet we have to bring the community

:05:21.:05:25.

together. Birmingham has been in the spotlight following these dreadful

:05:26.:05:30.

atrocities. Is there a fear that Birmingham is a hotbed of extremism?

:05:31.:05:34.

What can be done to tackle this, do you think? It is very important if

:05:35.:05:39.

you are in Muslim member of the community that we encourage the

:05:40.:05:45.

mosques to be open for everyone. The community should have a forum like

:05:46.:05:49.

this we are seeing today that people have opportunity to share their

:05:50.:05:53.

views and understanding. Thank you very much indeed for joining us. One

:05:54.:05:57.

man has been arrested this weekend. Another man who was arrested in

:05:58.:06:00.

Birmingham is in custody. Thank you for that.

:06:01.:06:02.

Police have released CCTV images of a

:06:03.:06:05.

man they want to speak to in relation to the death

:06:06.:06:09.

19-year old Kaydel Williams was found dead

:06:10.:06:11.

A 34-year-old man was charged with manslaughter

:06:12.:06:23.

and kidnap in November - but officers say they think more

:06:24.:06:26.

people were involved in Kaydel's death.

:06:27.:06:27.

Police are investigating after an unexploded grenade

:06:28.:06:29.

was found by a removal man in the Nechells area of Birmingham.

:06:30.:06:32.

Officers were called to Trevor Street after it was

:06:33.:06:34.

The bomb disposal unit have removed the device for safe destruction.

:06:35.:06:39.

A gun dealer from Gloucestershire has denied "deliberately smuggling"

:06:40.:06:41.

hundreds of illegal firearms into the UK.

:06:42.:06:45.

65-year-old Paul Edmunds is on trial for making

:06:46.:06:48.

and supplying home-made bullets, which the prosecution say were found

:06:49.:06:52.

at more than 90 crime scenes, including fatal shootings and a gun

:06:53.:06:55.

Our reporter Ben Godfrey was at Birmingham Crown Court.

:06:56.:06:59.

When Paul Edmunds was arrested in 2015, Police found three

:07:00.:07:11.

separate armouries at his home in Hardwicke in Gloucestershire.

:07:12.:07:14.

The prosecution say "tell tale" markings on ammunition -

:07:15.:07:16.

bullet casings - found at more than 90 crime scenes since 2009

:07:17.:07:19.

were linked by ballistics experts to tools used by Edmunds,

:07:20.:07:21.

They say he's a man with "almost excyclopaedic" knowledge of gun laws

:07:22.:07:30.

who imported hundreds of pre-war weapons and sold them illegally.

:07:31.:07:35.

He denies conspiracy to supply firearms and ammunition.

:07:36.:07:47.

That he dealt in obsolete, legal guns.

:07:48.:07:51.

But under-cross examination today, Edmunds admitted lying on records -

:07:52.:07:53.

by incorrectly stating some of the guns he imported

:07:54.:07:55.

were over 100 years old, and therefore antique.

:07:56.:07:57.

Antique weapons are legal and don't require a license.

:07:58.:07:59.

So this was - said the prosecution - a deliberate attempt

:08:00.:08:02.

to smuggle live firearms - untraceable guns sold

:08:03.:08:04.

Edmunds gave a firm "No" to that suggestion.

:08:05.:08:07.

Next, he was asked "How do you explain gun cartridges found

:08:08.:08:10.

at crime scenes had markings matching tools from your home?"

:08:11.:08:12.

Well, he said he had sold some of his tooling

:08:13.:08:15.

"Who did you sell this particular die-set to?," he was asked.

:08:16.:08:30.

"I have no recollection", he replied.

:08:31.:08:33.

A group of churches in Birmingham has come together to raise money

:08:34.:08:42.

to help those affected by the famine in East Africa.

:08:43.:08:45.

Their campaign is called Feed the People.

:08:46.:08:51.

Members of the group have been speaking to our reporter.

:08:52.:08:57.

Aid agencies have described this as the largest racketeering crisis

:08:58.:09:03.

since 1945. In parts of East Africa, up to 20 million people are facing

:09:04.:09:07.

the threat of famine. It does not take a scientific mind to actually

:09:08.:09:11.

see that there is a real need for people to be fed in the short-term.

:09:12.:09:15.

We can deal with the political issues later, but we must deal with

:09:16.:09:22.

the practical reality that someone is hungry. At holy Trinity Church in

:09:23.:09:26.

Perry Barr, they are discussing how to help. They are planning to raise

:09:27.:09:31.

money for the disaster appeal. We are asking the churches and others

:09:32.:09:35.

to make a big collection to give to Christian Aid so that we can respond

:09:36.:09:42.

to this crisis. We want to try and relieve the suffering, give hope to

:09:43.:09:48.

those people to know that there are brothers and sisters outside of

:09:49.:09:51.

their particular domain who are thinking about them and not only

:09:52.:09:54.

thinking about them but actually doing something to help them. The

:09:55.:09:58.

judges are planning to make Easter Sunday the focus for their

:09:59.:10:01.

fundraising efforts. We certainly aim to work with people of other

:10:02.:10:06.

faiths and no faithful, businesses and any other group that feels that

:10:07.:10:11.

they will want to work with others so we can have a coordinated

:10:12.:10:15.

response. The need for aid is immediate. Churches in the West

:10:16.:10:18.

Midlands are determined their donations will help those most at

:10:19.:10:19.

risk. Thanks for joining us

rough sleepers will simply end up back on the streets -

:11:01.:11:03.

when it closes this week. The 16-week programme rotated

churches. I was asked why I do it. My answer was that I do this for the

:11:30.:11:34.

same reason that people send money to Africa for the drought. It is the

:11:35.:11:40.

same sort of thing. You are helping unfortunate people. Once a week

night sheltered project, offering a bed and food to some of the city's

:11:49.:11:53.

homeless. It can happen to almost anyone and so if you are put in that

:11:54.:11:56.

situation, how would you like your son or daughter to be treated? If

:11:57.:12:00.

they had ended up homeless or your mum or dad. All of these people are

:12:01.:12:07.

someone else's relative and you just want to care for people. Many of

:12:08.:12:12.

those using the shelter have experienced relationship breakdowns

:12:13.:12:16.

or addiction issues. Jason says it is helping him turn his life around.

:12:17.:12:23.

Muscles can happen to anybody. We argue, anybody at all. It could

:12:24.:12:32.

happen to anybody. And don't judge. It just means that you do not have a

:12:33.:12:39.

warm bed to sleeping. Four years ago, Lee found himself slipping

:12:40.:12:43.

broth. Now he volunteers with the homeless. Homeless communities have

:12:44.:12:49.

just grown and it is getting bigger and there are a lot of people out

:12:50.:12:53.

there on the streets. We have a lot of people out there at the end of

:12:54.:12:56.

the day. The arrival of spring means the end of the winter project for

:12:57.:13:00.

another eight months and first on a return to the streets.

:13:01.:13:02.

The West Midlands can boast many award winners,

:13:03.:13:04.

now there's a new one to add to the list - Window

:13:05.:13:07.

Robert Baker has been cleaning windows for more than 50 years -

:13:08.:13:11.

he's now scooped the industry's top award.

:13:12.:13:12.

So what does it take to be top of the ladder?

:13:13.:13:15.

Rebecca Wood is with him now to find out, Beccy.

:13:16.:13:26.

Yes, yes got some top tips for hours in a minute, but first of all, it

:13:27.:13:33.

was a glorious weekend. We had some absolutely stunning weather Watchers

:13:34.:13:37.

pictures sent in from fantastic sunsets to beautiful blue skies and

:13:38.:13:42.

Fairweather cloud. It really was a very picturesque weekend. We had

:13:43.:13:45.

some lovely pictures sent in. But I don't know if you are anything like

:13:46.:13:50.

me you might have noticed that the weather did show up some smudges on

:13:51.:13:55.

the windows. Now, we happen to have the country's best window cleaner

:13:56.:13:59.

here and there is no harm in getting a bit of work done. Robert may have

:14:00.:14:03.

thought he was coming in to do an interview but I thought I would get

:14:04.:14:06.

him to do this window. He is very quick so I thought I would get him

:14:07.:14:10.

to do that. Come out here and show as how it is done. Robert, you are

:14:11.:14:16.

of the country's best window cleaner. How does that feel?

:14:17.:14:21.

Fantastic, actually. I am very proud to have won the award. Very proud

:14:22.:14:25.

indeed. You have been doing it now for more than 50 years so you know

:14:26.:14:28.

what it takes to get a window free of sticks. What do you need to do?

:14:29.:14:32.

It is all about having the right equipment. You need this pad and

:14:33.:14:35.

applicator and the more you practice the better you become. In those 50

:14:36.:14:40.

years, you will have scaled some pretty tall buildings in your time.

:14:41.:14:46.

What is the highest you have gone? 50 feet. That is like the City

:14:47.:14:51.

Hospital. That was the highest I have ever climbed. 50 feet. That is

:14:52.:14:56.

quite spectacular. You have been at the City Hospital today. Yes,

:14:57.:15:03.

cleaning the eye and Sheldon building at City Hospital. Today it

:15:04.:15:07.

has been sunny and we have some smudges on the windows. What we need

:15:08.:15:10.

to do to make sure our windows look as good as you manage to make them?

:15:11.:15:15.

It is all about having the right equipment, like I said. This pad

:15:16.:15:19.

applicator and squeezy and I always use very liquid. The more you

:15:20.:15:23.

practice the better you become. How do you get that action going? It is

:15:24.:15:28.

all about experience. The more you do it, the better you become. So

:15:29.:15:33.

there you go. The more you do it, the better you become. We have got

:15:34.:15:36.

loads of Windows and so if you do not mind, crack on. That is a bit

:15:37.:15:42.

cheeky, isn't it? He is the best in the country. He is quite good at it.

:15:43.:15:48.

He has got about 500 more windows to go. Thank you.

:15:49.:15:49.

It's a big week for Coventry City with a trip

:15:50.:15:51.

Dan Pallet has joined me - they've survived relegation

:15:52.:15:55.

Coventry City will head for Wembley this weekend,

:15:56.:15:58.

knowing they can't be relegated before their CheckaTrade Trophy

:15:59.:16:00.

Their 1-0 home win against Bristol Rovers keeps

:16:01.:16:07.

alive their faint hopes of survival in League One.

:16:08.:16:11.

And the Sky Blues aren't the only Midlands team playing

:16:12.:16:15.

at Wembley on Sunday, as Ian Winter reports.

:16:16.:16:25.

In six days' time, they will be running out at Wembley to play the

:16:26.:16:30.

biggest game of their lives. Will you be going down the night before

:16:31.:16:34.

to get a good sleep? Lots of energy and then hopefully you'll enjoy the

:16:35.:16:36.

game and come back with the trophy. A timely pep talk from Paul Hurst

growing and the opportunities are there for them as well as the men.

:17:14.:17:20.

What will be scored be? Bristol City one, as three. Good luck. By the

:17:21.:17:26.

time they run out at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, the battle to

:17:27.:17:28.

avoid relegation from League 1 will have taken another twist. At least

:17:29.:17:33.

Coventry City can't be relegated before they play Oxford in the

:17:34.:17:45.

trick-or-treat final. They are still 11 points behind Shrewsbury.

:17:46.:17:48.

Saturday's defeat by Bolton means the shrews are now only one point

:17:49.:17:54.

above Port Vale who drew 0-0 against the MK dons. Will this go right to

:17:55.:17:59.

the wire? I think it is looking that way. I have said recently when I

:18:00.:18:03.

first came to the club, you wanted to make sure we could try to be part

:18:04.:18:09.

of it. We have managed to do that. The players have had some good

:18:10.:18:13.

results on the way and we are in there fighting. Cheltenham Town are

:18:14.:18:20.

still six points clear of lead relegation but no such worries for

:18:21.:18:25.

the girls as they make their final preparations for that Wembley date

of the table in rugby I think they are safe

despite losing to Wasps yesterday. The bottom club Bristol lost

:18:50.:18:58.

to Gloucester on Friday night. And then we had a sensational game

:18:59.:19:01.

at the Ricoh yesterday. Wasps won 40 points to 33 with two

:19:02.:19:04.

tries form the league's top But Worcester also earned two

:19:05.:19:07.

bonus points in defeat. They scored five tries

:19:08.:19:13.

and lost by just seven. So Worcester are now nine

:19:14.:19:18.

points clear of Bristol It seems we could have

Kevin Healey faced as a child Dramatised in this film

:20:49.:20:51.

Twin Brothers Worlds Apart. Neighbour Trish remembers how hard

:20:52.:21:00.

it was growing up for young Kevin in Knutton in Newscaster Under

:21:01.:21:04.

Lyme. I was different. You were different

:21:05.:21:13.

and there was no other way of putting it because I didn't

:21:14.:21:16.

understand what you had got but I knew your heart was bigger than

:21:17.:21:20.

anything and I used to get angry and I used to come in and stamp my feet

:21:21.:21:26.

and cry and I thought, hang on a minute. Kevin doesn't let it get him

:21:27.:21:34.

down. He holds his head up high and you always have done and I am so

:21:35.:21:35.

proud of you, Kevin. Back in the 80s then no one

:21:36.:21:39.

knew Kevin was autistic. His twin brother was diagnosed

:21:40.:21:43.

with autism at 18 but Kevin was diagnosed when he was 26

:21:44.:21:46.

with a milder form. This is the park I grew up in as a

:21:47.:21:53.

child and used to play here regularly. Why did you want to put

:21:54.:21:58.

your personal story out there? To raise more awareness of autism and

:21:59.:22:01.

to move away from the misconceptions of autism.

:22:02.:22:02.

According to the National Autistic Society 700,000 people

:22:03.:22:04.

are on the autism spectrum in the UK - that's more than 1 in 100.

:22:05.:22:11.

As a child, what was it like before being diagnosed and what is it like

:22:12.:22:19.

now as an adult? As a child, I found it really hard to interact with

:22:20.:22:22.

other children and communicate with them as a child growing up. As an

:22:23.:22:26.

adult now, even though I can communicate quite articulately, I

:22:27.:22:32.

still have problems with communication. People not

:22:33.:22:36.

understanding me or people thinking I can be quite literal and to the

:22:37.:22:38.

point. After tonight's premiere,

:22:39.:22:39.

it'll be taken to film festivals Satnam Rana, BBC Midlands Today,

Newcastle Under Lyme. Now we all love a happy ending -

:22:42.:22:50.

and when it comes to losing a pet - there's nothing more rewarding

:22:51.:22:54.

than being reunited with them. But this tale has

:22:55.:22:56.

a slightly unusual twist. Darcy, a young female cat,

:22:57.:22:59.

was found sheltering in the storms a week ago,

:23:00.:23:00.

and was rescued. When she was taken to the vets

:23:01.:23:03.

to check if she had a microchip - Laura May McMullan

:23:04.:23:06.

takes up the story. Returning home and back where she

:23:07.:23:18.

belongs. Hello. It's been quite a tale

:23:19.:23:23.

for this little lady. Darcy went missing three

:23:24.:23:30.

weeks ago in Birmingham When he took her to

:23:31.:23:32.

the vets, however - her microchip was registered

:23:33.:23:37.

in Valencia, in Spain. I was absolutely speechless

:23:38.:23:39.

and so was the vet. He just looked at the screen

:23:40.:23:45.

and went "what" because it's Despite an international

:23:46.:23:48.

search, and an appeal on Midlands Today this morning -

:23:49.:23:59.

it turns out the answer lies here in Birmingham in January

:24:00.:24:01.

which brings in cats It has been true love ever since. I

:24:02.:24:23.

genuinely never thought I would see her again. So to get her back and to

:24:24.:24:26.

see her in good health, today is a good day. The best part of all was

:24:27.:24:32.

handing her back to Matthew. That was absolutely brilliant. I can't

:24:33.:24:37.

stress enough how important it is that details are updated immediately

:24:38.:24:41.

if people change address or if the pet is re-homed. Without having a

:24:42.:24:46.

microchip, it reduces the chances of owners to be reunited with their

:24:47.:24:51.

pets. The international database currently has more than 67 million

:24:52.:24:55.

pets registered on it. And that number is growing every day. Do you

:24:56.:24:59.

know how much I have missed you? the corner all along -

:25:00.:25:05.

already making her home in Isn't that gorgeous? And also a

:25:06.:25:09.

gorgeous end to the day. Glorious spring sunshine over

:25:10.:25:23.

the weekend, but in short supply today, how's it

:25:24.:25:25.

looking for the week? Well, if you like whether mild, we

:25:26.:25:34.

have more of that to come but it will also be more unsettled. You

:25:35.:25:36.

know we are getting brighter days and sunlight but I am afraid there

:25:37.:25:41.

will be a bit of a change as we head to this week. We are starting to see

:25:42.:25:45.

things breaking down. We keep the mild weather. We will have some

:25:46.:25:49.

sunshine at times. Some showers will start to push on and by the time we

:25:50.:25:53.

get to Wednesday and the second half of the week, that is where we will

:25:54.:25:57.

see rain moving in. So it really is going to start to break down from

:25:58.:26:01.

the settled weekend that we had. As for tonight, we did have plenty of

:26:02.:26:04.

cloud around but that did start to thin and break and we have seen a

:26:05.:26:08.

glorious end to the day but through tonight it will bubble back up and

:26:09.:26:11.

we will start to get more pushing its way up from the south and west.

:26:12.:26:15.

A change is on the way. Our wind direction is changing so that is

:26:16.:26:19.

bringing in some warmer error but temperatures overnight ranging

:26:20.:26:24.

between 3-6 C. The battle between high pressure and low pressure is

:26:25.:26:27.

taking place. We will see low-pressure squeezing that high

:26:28.:26:30.

pressure out of the way. It will change our wind direction but it

:26:31.:26:34.

will also open the floodgates for weather systems or for the start of

:26:35.:26:37.

the day tomorrow there will be some bright spells of sunshine and also

:26:38.:26:40.

cloud but then we will start to see showers pushing their way in from

:26:41.:26:45.

the South West and as is the nature with showers, they could arrive just

:26:46.:26:50.

about anywhere through the day. They could be heavy with thunder as well.

:26:51.:26:53.

Temperature is doing better than they did today. 13-15 C. As we had

:26:54.:26:58.

through the remainder of the day tomorrow, we will see those showers

:26:59.:27:02.

continuing to come through on the breeze. They will start to ease

:27:03.:27:04.

overnight eventually but we will keep the cloud overhead. It will be

:27:05.:27:11.

10-11 C. That is about as good as we 10-11 C. That is about as good as we

:27:12.:27:15.

had today so it will feel much milder. To the end of the week, that

:27:16.:27:19.

is when we start to get that break down. More weather systems working

:27:20.:27:25.

in from the West. Heavy rain. Something a bit fresher as well.

:27:26.:27:29.

Temperatures will be up to 13-15 C for most of the week. Something to

:27:30.:27:34.

cling onto their although the pesky showers are back.

:27:35.:27:35.

Thanks, Rebecca, and thanks for all the weather watchers

:27:36.:27:37.

If they don't appear on the programme, they're often

:27:38.:27:41.

That's on tomorrow's programme at 6.30pm.

:27:42.:27:43.

That's all from us for now, I'll be back at 22.30pm

:27:44.:27:47.
