he hopes to prove the earnings | 0:00:00 | 0:00:00
forecasts | 0:00:00 | 0:00:01
Hi, I'm Annabel Tiffin.
Welcome to North West Today. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
The headlines this
Thursday lunchtime: | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
The clean-up begins after heavy rain
caused severe flooding | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
in North Lancashire and South
Cumbria. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
And the group of fire cadets
from Cheshire tell us | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
about their experiences rebuilding
a school in Nepal damaged | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
by an earthquake. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:33
More than 70 people and 20
horses had to be rescued | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
from floods in North Lancashire
and South Cumbria as bad weather | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
hit our region last night. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:41
Emergency crews received
more than 500 calls | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
due to the heavy rain. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
There's been disruption
on the roads and trains. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Beccy Barr joins us from Galgate,
one of the worst affected areas. | 0:00:47 | 0:00:57
Yes, that's right. Galgate is a
couple of miles south of Lancaster, | 0:01:01 | 0:01:07
near to Lancaster University. When
the rain came down last night so | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
heavily on the river it started to
rise, it is the River Conda that | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
runs through Galgate, as the rain
came down in the middle of the night | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
the River Conda burst its banks and
many homes and businesses in this | 0:01:18 | 0:01:22
part of the county were flooded.
There was a lot of destruction | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
overnight to the roads, railways.
Also schools. The local school here | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
in Galgate is closed today because
of that damage. People each year I | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
left with the task of pumping out,
as you can see, pumping out | 0:01:34 | 0:01:41
basements in this village. Lots of
people have a really long job ahead | 0:01:41 | 0:01:46
of them today. Judy Hobson has more. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:50
The River Conda burst
it's banks in Galgate | 0:01:50 | 0:01:52
near Lancaster last night, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
flooding houses and forcing others
to abandon their cars. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
In Lentworth Drive,
more devastation. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:57
The Coastguard had to rescue people. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
One of the big concerns that I have
tonight is that at the beginning | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
of October I contacted Lancashire
county council raising a concern | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
about the way in which drains
were not being cleared | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
across the constituency. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
It's been seven weeks and I've not
heard back from them at all. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
The drains have continued
to be very much blocked. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:14
I think a lot of the people I've
been speaking to are particularly | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
concerned about drainage. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
But the county council said today
there was nothing to indicate | 0:02:18 | 0:02:21
blocked drains or gullies had
caused the flooding. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
The back has broken its banks
further upstream and that's | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
after the EA had recently done
some additional works, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
flood protection works. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
We've had a lot of rain and it's not
got anywhere to go, apparently. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
Cumbria was also badly affected. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
Roads including the main
A590 closed, as well as | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
two lanes of the M6. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:44
There were no rail services
between Lancaster and Barrow, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
and 22 schools remain closed today. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
This morning, the clean-up. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
At its height, the water at this
house in Galgate was waist high. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
It rose relatively quickly
but gradually at that point and then | 0:02:58 | 0:03:03
it came through the back door
as well, and through the back door | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
it properly flew into the house,
it rose very quickly from then | 0:03:07 | 0:03:09
on until about one in the morning. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:11
My housemate went to get his wellies
from the car and had to climb out | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
to climb out the window,
because he tried opening | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
the front door and water came
through like a tsunami. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
It was like a film. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
In some areas of the county,
seven inches of rain | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
fell in just 24 hours. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
Several flood warnings
remain in place. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
Judy Hobson, BBC North West Today. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:36
I think it is that risk of potential
further flooding that really worries | 0:03:36 | 0:03:41
people and the fact it is still only
November, the winter looks very long | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
and hard ahead of us. Remember, put
this into the context of the past | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
couple of years, it was just two
years ago that we had very | 0:03:49 | 0:03:54
significant flooding around
Lancaster which was said to be a | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
once in a century flood. At that
point, the electricity was out for a | 0:03:58 | 0:04:03
week on and off. It was a huge
amount of destruction. Just two | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
years on, we are in a similar
situation. The electricity lightly | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
has remained on, but homes and
businesses are suffering once again. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
Just down the road and Lancaster I
spoke to a business. We featured | 0:04:15 | 0:04:21
them on north-westerly and North
West Tonight before. They have been | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
flooded several times and again
overnight were flooded. Later on | 0:04:24 | 0:04:29
North West Tonight we will be
speaking with Kat Smith about the | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
responsibility on local Government
to help to ameliorate the situation. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:38
We will get more into that later.
For now it is a long and slow | 0:04:38 | 0:04:42
clean-up for people living in this
area. Back to you. Very difficult | 0:04:42 | 0:04:46
for people in that area. Thanks very
much. | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49 | |
And for updates, don't forget
BBC Radio Lancashire | 0:04:49 | 0:04:51
will have the latest flooding news
and traffic right throughout day. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
As you'll have seen on the main one
o'clock news, one of the killers | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
of toddler James Bulger has been
recalled to prison suspected | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
of having child abuse
images on his computer. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:01
It is the second time Jon Venables
has been sent back to jail under | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
similar circumstances. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:06
He was released in 2001 on licence,
after serving eight years | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
for the murder of two-year-old
James in 1993. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
The 35-year-old, who had been living
under a new identity, | 0:05:13 | 0:05:15
was recalled to prison last week. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:19
Within the last few minutes,
Labour have announced that they've | 0:05:19 | 0:05:22
suspended the Bury South MP
Ivan Lewis from the party. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:25
It's while they investigate claims
he'd made unwanted sexual | 0:05:25 | 0:05:29
advances towards women. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
The party said it had received
a complaint about his conduct. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
Mr Lewis previously denied making
any "non-consensual sexual comments | 0:05:35 | 0:05:39
or sexual advances towards women." | 0:05:39 | 0:05:49
The pre-inquest hearings,
which were due to be held | 0:05:49 | 0:05:51
into the Manchester Arena Bombing
this week, have been | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
postponed until the new year. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:54
It's to enable
investigations to continue. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
It's six months since 22
people were killed. | 0:05:56 | 0:06:02
A group of fire cadets
from Cheshire who've been | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
rebuilding a school in Nepal,
say the experience has changed them. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:07
More than a dozen teenagers made
the trip to an earthquake damaged | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
region of the Himalayan country. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
They raised tens of thousands
of pounds to pay for it, | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
and they've just returned. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
Mark Edwardson's been to see them. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Cheshire Fire Cadets -
16 of them on a two week trip | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
to a remote and isolated
Nepalese village. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
Ravaged by an earthquake in 2015,
rebuilding takes a long time | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
in this impoverished place. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:34
That's what spurred these
teenagers into action. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:36
The school, well, it was more
than I ever expected it | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
to be, to be honest. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:40
It was huge! | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
I only thought we were building
a small, little school, | 0:06:42 | 0:06:46
but it turned out to be an amazing
high school that will benefit | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
so many people in the future. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
The Cadets funded the trip entirely
by themselves, raising £70,000 | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
for their mercy mission. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
It took them four days to reach
their destination and the welcome | 0:06:55 | 0:06:58
they received was humbling. | 0:06:58 | 0:07:01
Flower garlands over our necks,
sitting there, bit of a speech. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
But just looking round and seeing
the smiles on all the kids' faces | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
and the teachers and everyone
in the village, it's | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
their life in that school,
and for generations to come. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
It just made me really happy
to know that I've helped | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
contribute to their happiness. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
Remaking and remodelling,
bricks and brushes occupied | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
the Cadets for six days. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
And they too have been changed. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
I honestly do feel like I've grown
up quite a bit since I've been | 0:07:30 | 0:07:33
in there because I could have been
a bit selfish, a bit moody. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
But when I came back,
I was more into helping around | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
the house and the local community
more because it shows | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
you what a difference you can make
on people's lives. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
It was a whistle stop trip,
but they'll remember | 0:07:44 | 0:07:48
it for a long time. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
Mark Edwardson, BBC
North West Today, Widnes. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:55
Football, and new Bury manager
Chris Lucketti says his appointment | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
at the club feels like a homecoming. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
The former defender made close
to 300 appearances for the club, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:09
and since last year has been
assistant manager | 0:08:09 | 0:08:11
at Scunthorpe United. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
He arrives at Bury with the side
bottom of League One. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
The club means everything to me. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:17
The most successful time
I've had in my career | 0:08:17 | 0:08:19
was at Bury Football Club. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:20
Especially when we took the club
from the bottom of the fourth | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
divison into a Championship club. | 0:08:23 | 0:08:25
The impressions I've got off
the lads have all been positive, | 0:08:25 | 0:08:27
and the calibre of players that
we've got is more than good enough | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
to stay in this league. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:31
That has got to be our
first port of call. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
Now for the forecast
from Alex Hamilton. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:35
Good afternoon. | 0:08:36 | 0:08:37
It was a wet and windy night last
night, rainfall totals up | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
to 71mm in Morcambe. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:40
That did cause some flooding
across various parts | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
of Lancashire today. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
As we go through the course
of this afternoon, it'll | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
still be breezy at times,
with patchy showers. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
But also some bright spells
in between and highs of around | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
nine degrees Celsius. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
Tonight, a yellow weather warning
for ice so do take care. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
There could be some tricky
driving conditions. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
It will drop cold tonight,
lows of around zero degrees | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
Celsius in rual spots. | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
A mostly dry night, perhaps some
wintry showers over higher ground. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
Then tomorrow we're expecting drier
and brighter weather, | 0:09:06 | 0:09:09
just the odd shower here and there. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
But it will be feeling cool,
with highs of only around | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
seven degrees Celsius. | 0:09:13 | 0:09:15
Fairly bright as we go
towards the weekend, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
but wrap up warm, it will be chilly. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:22
That's all for now.
Goodbye. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:31 |
