Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight with Ranvir Singh and Roger

:00:02.:00:06.

Johnson. Our top story: The family of soldier killed in

:00:06.:00:08.

Afghanistan say they're disgusted with the MoD wanting part of his

:00:08.:00:16.

wages back. I've read the letter again to make

:00:16.:00:20.

sure what I read was correct. I was shocked.

:00:20.:00:23.

The MoD have apologised but his friends tell us it's diabolical

:00:23.:00:26.

request. Also in the programme: A father whose daughter was

:00:27.:00:30.

murdered campaigns for Clare's Law - the right to know if your partner

:00:30.:00:34.

has a violent history. Save our stations, MPs' debate the

:00:34.:00:38.

BBC's plans to make cuts to local radio.

:00:38.:00:42.

And Sarah Mulkerrins is in Salford with a band gearing up for the gig

:00:42.:00:52.
:00:52.:00:59.

Lance Corporal Jordan Bancroft paid with his life serving Queen and

:00:59.:01:03.

country in Afghanistan. But the Ministry of Defence says it paid

:01:03.:01:09.

the Lancashire soldier too much in his final wage packet. The

:01:09.:01:12.

government wrote to his family to reclaim just over 400 because he

:01:12.:01:18.

was paid for a month in advance, but was killed before the end of it.

:01:18.:01:21.

His parents say they're disgusted by the penny pinching. Our Chief

:01:21.:01:24.

Reporter Dave Guest has the story. It's clear Jordan Bancroft's

:01:24.:01:28.

parents are proud of their solider son who died in the line of duty.

:01:28.:01:38.

But, they say, the Ministry of Defence has now insulted his memory.

:01:38.:01:43.

It is like having -- stabbing your heart. It is disgusting. The family

:01:43.:01:46.

received this letter telling them they were due a payment for holiday

:01:46.:01:49.

time Jordan had spent in training. In fact, by pure chance, BBC

:01:49.:01:51.

Northwest Tonight filmed Jordan on a training exercise in Norfolk the

:01:52.:01:56.

year before he died. But, the letter went on to say just over

:01:56.:01:59.

400 would be deducted from the payment because Jordan died on

:01:59.:02:09.
:02:09.:02:10.

August 21st 2010, but he'd been paid until the 31st. I was

:02:10.:02:15.

flabbergasted. I read the letter again to make sure what I read was

:02:15.:02:21.

correct. I was utterly shocked. You could have knocked me over with a

:02:21.:02:26.

further. He was killed on 21st August so what they are saying is

:02:26.:02:31.

you owe them 10 days back pay because he did not work? It is not

:02:31.:02:36.

the amount of money that is the problem. Money is not the issue, it

:02:36.:02:41.

is basically the letter and the wording of it that were quite

:02:41.:02:45.

shocking. -- that was quite shocking. Members of the Nelson

:02:45.:02:48.

branch of the Royal British Legion, preparing for this year's poppy

:02:48.:02:52.

appeal, share the family's sense of outrage. Words fail me. I think it

:02:52.:02:58.

is diabolical. Jordan did not know that he was going to die in the

:02:58.:03:04.

middle of August. In a statement, the Ministry of Defence says it

:03:04.:03:10.

regrets any offence and distress caused to Jordan's family. It says

:03:10.:03:13.

that personnel who were killed in the course of duty were dealt with

:03:13.:03:19.

care. It says recouping overpayments were designed to

:03:19.:03:25.

ensure feyness -- fairness to all. When Clare Wood met a man she liked

:03:25.:03:28.

on Facebook, she had no idea he had a violent criminal past. George

:03:28.:03:32.

Appleton became her boyfriend, and then her killer.

:03:32.:03:36.

He strangled Clare at her home in Salford before hanging himself.

:03:36.:03:39.

Ever since, her father has campaigned for police to be able to

:03:39.:03:43.

tell people if their partners have a history of violence. Today he

:03:43.:03:46.

welcomed a Government announcement that it's considering changing the

:03:46.:03:50.

law. Naomi Cornwell reports. George Appleton had a habit of

:03:50.:03:54.

contacting women through internet sites. When Clare Wood met him on

:03:54.:03:58.

Facebook in 2009, she had no idea that he had a record of domestic

:03:58.:04:02.

violence against previous partners. He went on to strangle her and set

:04:02.:04:11.

her body on fire at her home in Salford, before hanging himself.

:04:11.:04:16.

daughter was not a silly girl. Had she been given the opportunity to

:04:16.:04:20.

find out if he had done these things in the past, I would think

:04:20.:04:26.

that she would have done it so soon it would have made your eyes water.

:04:26.:04:29.

These are the last pictures of George Appleton, caught on CCTV on

:04:29.:04:32.

the day before Clare's body was found. The week before he'd smashed

:04:32.:04:35.

down her front door. That earned him a fine and a harassment order.

:04:35.:04:38.

But he had a history of harassing other women too. He'd had been

:04:38.:04:41.

jailed in 2001 for breaching a restraining order. The following

:04:41.:04:44.

year, he was sent to prison for harassment with fear of violence.

:04:44.:04:47.

He was also before the courts for criminal damage at the home of a

:04:47.:04:49.

former girlfriend. Now the Government's launched a 12-week

:04:49.:04:52.

consultation on plans to give men and women the right to know whether

:04:52.:05:01.

their partners have previous convictions for domestic violence.

:05:01.:05:06.

I would like it that those who are in a domestic violent situation to

:05:06.:05:11.

have this information available. But some civil liberties groups

:05:11.:05:20.

have concerns about the plans. Given these powers are already in

:05:20.:05:25.

place, we are very concerned that this new database is being proposed

:05:25.:05:30.

and a lot of funding will go into a new framework which could have

:05:30.:05:32.

serious unintended consequences. And a change in legislation could

:05:32.:05:35.

come even sooner, an amendment to the Legal Aid and Sentencing Bill

:05:35.:05:44.

introducing similar powers will be debated at Westminster next week.

:05:44.:05:47.

The Prime Minister's been asked to apologise for comments he's claimed

:05:47.:05:50.

to have made about the families of the 96 Liverpool fans who died in

:05:50.:05:53.

the Hillsborough Stadium disaster. Yesterday, it was reported that

:05:53.:05:55.

David Cameron compared bereaved families pressing for the release

:05:55.:05:59.

of more information to "a blind man, in a dark room, looking for a black

:05:59.:06:09.

cat that isn't there". A local MP today called on him to say sorry.

:06:09.:06:12.

Will the Prime Minister take this opportunity to apologise to the

:06:12.:06:21.

relatives and friends of the 96 Hillsborough victims for these

:06:21.:06:26.

grossly comments? This government has done the right thing by opening

:06:26.:06:31.

up the Cabinet papers to help those people find the closer they seek.

:06:31.:06:33.

A manager at Trafford Housing Trust, demoted for making comments against

:06:33.:06:36.

gay marriage, has received support from gay rights campaigner Peter

:06:36.:06:40.

Tatchell. Adrian Smith from Bolton had his pay cut after he wrote on

:06:40.:06:43.

Facebook that allowing gay weddings in churches was "an equality too

:06:43.:06:53.

far". But Mr Tatchell believes the punishment was harsh. Adrian

:06:53.:06:58.

Smith's comment was Martley homophobic and expressed a view

:06:58.:07:03.

that is shared by most of the population, including myself. Their

:07:03.:07:08.

former, I don't understand why Trafford Housing Trust have taken

:07:08.:07:12.

this rather severe decision to demote him and effectively cut his

radio stations could lose up to a quarter of staff. BBC Radio Cumbria,

:08:12.:08:16.

one of five local stations in the region feeling the budget squeeze.

:08:16.:08:25.

It's facing a 20% cut: 12 out of 37 staff may have to go. Professionals

:08:25.:08:30.

who rely on the service are worried. It is all very well for those

:08:30.:08:34.

making the decisions to say you can use Twitter and Facebook, but a lot

:08:34.:08:38.

of people would not know how to do that. It really is very important,

:08:38.:08:41.

it is a life blood for certain parts of the community.

:08:41.:08:44.

What's caused this is the government's decision to freeze the

:08:44.:08:47.

BBC licence fee and force the Corporation to take on extra costs.

:08:47.:08:50.

But it's the BBC that's decided how to spend the money and local radio

:08:50.:08:57.

is not at the top of the list. The BBC has refused an interview but on

:08:57.:09:02.

her blog the Director of BBC News Helen Boaden writes: "Are the plans

:09:36.:09:40.

agree with me that it is not just a question of what money goes where,

:09:40.:09:43.

it is a question of identity? the government seems broadly

:09:43.:09:50.

supportive. Other members have suggested closing down services and

:09:50.:09:55.

cuts to Radio 4 which would result in job losses. They suggested cuts

these books were collected by many generations of a farming family.

:11:08.:11:12.

generations to come. It is a painstaking process and to

:11:17.:11:21.

restore this library: They are more than 1,500 books in this room,

:11:21.:11:26.

dating from the 16th century up to 1942. That restoration task lies

with these two women. Minor repairs to tears in the pages. In this one,

:11:34.:11:40.

it has been repaired down here and along the edges. Then things like

:11:40.:11:45.

repairs to the corners of the books. Many of these books are extremely

:11:45.:11:50.

rare and preparing them has only been made possible after the

:11:50.:11:55.

National Trust received a grant of 14,000. Given the wide variety of

:11:55.:11:59.

the books and their ages, we have one of the top three libraries

:11:59.:12:02.

within the National Trust. But because the books have been well

:12:02.:12:08.

used, lots of them have torn pages so it is important to repair those

:12:08.:12:13.

things to give another few hundred years of life to the books.

:12:13.:12:16.

And delving into this library also provides an insight into the

:12:16.:12:24.

family's lives. I love this collection because there is so much

:12:24.:12:30.

evidence to the people who read the books, you can feel their presence.

:12:30.:12:35.

It has something very special about it. Also there is the fact that the

Browns were Bookbinders. Papering over the cracks will be a time-

:12:40.:12:43.

consuming exercise. The whole project will take seven months to

:12:43.:12:47.

complete. Now it was going be the

:12:47.:12:51.

breakthrough gig for Manchester band The Slow Show. They were

:12:51.:12:54.

selected from a pool of new bands to support Elbow in a special

:12:54.:12:58.

concert in Manchester tomorrow night.

:12:58.:13:02.

However on Monday, their van was stolen with the drum kit inside.

:13:02.:13:05.

With no kit, it looked like they would have to miss their biggest

:13:05.:13:09.

gig yet. But the show will go on, and Sarah Mulkerrins is with the

:13:09.:13:19.
:13:19.:13:48.

Well, that was Manchester band The Slow Show and a few days ago a

:13:48.:13:53.

rehearsal like this wasn't possible. That's because their drum kit and

:13:53.:13:55.

other equipment was stolen on Monday evening from outside drummer

:13:55.:14:04.

Chris Hough's house. Chris, explain to us what happened? I was loading

:14:04.:14:09.

up the van to come to Brussels on Monday night and my wife asked me

:14:09.:14:16.

to go to the supermarket with her so I was begrudging. Eventually I

:14:16.:14:21.

did go and when we returned an hour later, the van had disappeared and

:14:21.:14:26.

they had smashed through the back doors of the House, the front doors,

:14:26.:14:35.

and all the stuff had gone, some symbols and other things. He spent

:14:35.:14:39.

25 years collecting this stuff? and it has taken a lot of money to

:14:39.:14:45.

build everything up. A lot of people have been very good, Mike

:14:45.:14:49.

Joyce offers a drum-kit for the gig we have got on Thursday which is a

:14:49.:14:57.

big one for us. That is massive, isn't it? Yes, it is a great honour

to support Harare elbow. We were chosen by a panel from that tour

bans, we were lucky. You have gathered a new drum-kit in time to

:15:17.:15:23.

make the gig for tomorrow. The guy from Manchester Drum Centre sorted

:15:23.:15:30.

me out so I really appreciate that because we would have been up stuck.

:15:30.:15:34.

We have a logo on the front as well. We will let you get back to

:15:34.:15:44.
:15:44.:15:52.

They sound good. I'm sure they will be fine regardless of their drum-

:15:53.:16:02.

kit. It is becoming unedifying, someone

:16:02.:16:12.
:16:12.:16:16.

who Hardy plays is in the headlines. Mean Carlos Tevez by any chance?

:16:16.:16:18.

Last night, City released the findings of their internal inquiry

:16:18.:16:21.

over his apparent refusal to come off the bench against Bayern Munich.

:16:21.:16:24.

Tevez has been found guilty of five breaches of contract. They include

:16:24.:16:27.

refusing to play in a match, failing to follow his manager's

:16:27.:16:30.

instructions and bringing the game and club into disrepute. He was

:16:30.:16:33.

fined four weeks' wages, believed to be around 1 million, and has

:16:33.:16:36.

already served a two-week suspension. And Tevez and his

:16:36.:16:39.

advisers have reacted strongly to these findings? The BBC understands

:16:39.:16:41.

Tevez's advisers are considering suing manager Roberto Mancini for

:16:41.:16:43.

his comments after that match in Germany. They've always maintained

:16:43.:16:46.

he didn't refuse to play and Mancini's comments could amount to

:16:46.:16:50.

defamation of character. Here's what a sports lawyer thinks of the

:16:50.:16:55.

chances of such an action succeeding.

:16:55.:16:59.

This is probably part of a much wider picture between the club and

:16:59.:17:05.

the player. Ultimately, this situation will be resolved, not

:17:05.:17:08.

necessarily through the courts. I think there has probably been a

:17:08.:17:12.

long history up something that is not quite right. Maybe this is the

:17:12.:17:16.

latest chapter in that affair. And it's not over. Tevez does have

:17:16.:17:20.

the opportunity to appeal. Now, let's get back to football. While

:17:20.:17:23.

Bolton Wanderers and Burnley bowed out of the Carling Cup last night

:17:23.:17:26.

it was back to business for Manchester United whose fourth

:17:26.:17:29.

round tie took them down into the Football League, from where there

:17:29.:17:36.

were loads of goals for our sides too.

:17:36.:17:41.

Chalk one up to the reserves, Sir Alex made 11 changes to the side

:17:41.:17:47.

and they did not let him down. After this goal after 15 minutes on

:17:47.:17:51.

his hundreds star, Michael Owen made it two before this player

:17:51.:17:57.

scored the goal of the night. Tranmere march on in League One and

:17:57.:18:02.

are in the play-off zone with 82-0 win over Hartlepool. This came just

:18:02.:18:10.

22 seconds after the start. What did Preston have to do to win? They

:18:10.:18:17.

were 2-0 up on all that much. Two goals in three minutes then display

:18:17.:18:25.

at levelled it. They thought they had done it with this unbelievable

:18:25.:18:31.

third only for the opposition to equal with just four minutes to go.

:18:32.:18:36.

In League Two, at more come up suffering a similar Hanover this

:18:36.:18:46.
:18:46.:18:48.

morning. It ended 3-3. Crew headed home from Cheltenham with all three

:18:48.:18:53.

points. They had won five in a row until this penalty put paid to

:18:53.:19:00.

their run. Macclesfield are flying and it was a spot-kick for them

:19:00.:19:07.

against Bradford. The City keeper was sent the wrong way. They are

:19:07.:19:12.

one win from automatic promotion. Plenty more Carling Cup action this

:19:12.:19:15.

evening with four of our sides aiming to join United in the

:19:15.:19:18.

quarter finals. Liverpool head down the M6 to face Stoke, closely

:19:18.:19:21.

followed by Man City who play Wolves. There are home ties for

:19:21.:19:24.

Blackburn against Newcastle, and Everton who host Chelsea.

:19:24.:19:27.

Highlights of those games on the League Cup Show on BBC1 at 11:30.

:19:27.:19:30.

Better still there's live coverage of all the games on BBC Radios

:19:30.:19:35.

Lancashire, Manchester and Merseyside.

:19:36.:19:39.

Now, the North West has a rich tradition in churning out stars in

:19:39.:19:43.

a range of sports. But when it comes to racing drivers, we've been

:19:43.:19:46.

in the slow lane. However, that could be about to change. Oliver

:19:46.:19:50.

Webb from Cheshire is on the verge of securing a place in one of

:19:50.:19:54.

America's top Indy Car teams, as Ian Haslam reports.

:19:54.:19:59.

Since the age of ten, Oli Webb's been living life in the fast lane.

:19:59.:20:08.

Having started off in karting, the Cheshire driver's quickly moved

:20:08.:20:12.

through the ranks of motor racing. Next up it's Indycar, America's

:20:13.:20:22.

answer to Formula One. They would do 240 miles an hour. Formula One

:20:22.:20:26.

doesn't do that. It is their main thing and they travel around the

:20:26.:20:30.

world like to Japan and other countries. What kind of fans do get

:20:30.:20:35.

over their? At the last race, we had about 210,000. This isn't the

:20:35.:20:38.

first time we've met Oli on North West Tonight: 18 months ago he was

:20:38.:20:41.

preparing for his debut in Formula Three, with Tony in the passenger

:20:41.:20:49.

seat. For me, it is always about the speed. I want to be at the top

:20:49.:20:56.

of what I do. Aylott comes with that, and be known in the north-

:20:56.:21:00.

west has come out of it. Of course no motorsports are without risk,

:21:00.:21:03.

and Indycar has found itself in the spotlight this month following the

:21:03.:21:06.

death of British driver Dan Wheldon during a race in Las Vegas. He

:21:06.:21:13.

raced for the Schmidt Racing team. I was with him that before he got

:21:13.:21:17.

in the car. It was an upsetting weekend, but we have to understand

:21:17.:21:23.

that that happens. As soon as we get in the car and we put the right

:21:23.:21:26.

pedal down, we stopped thinking about that. The danger will always

:21:26.:21:29.

be there, so will the chance for Oli to show his talents to the

:21:29.:21:39.
:21:39.:21:40.

world. He flies out to the USA My fingernail marks are still in

:21:40.:21:42.

his seat! Finally tonight, after Mario

:21:42.:21:44.

Balotelli's hectic week with Manchester City, what with

:21:44.:21:46.

fireworks and demolishing Manchester United, what better way

:21:46.:21:49.

to relax than go shopping? Although, according to one report today, he

:21:49.:21:58.

was a little off target. Instead of buying an iron for his mum as he

this story. Now all good sports teams have a

:22:27.:22:30.

mascot, and the darts team at The Royds Arms pub in Rochdale is no

:22:30.:22:34.

exception. In fact its members are so proud of Jip the dog - yes, dog

:22:34.:22:37.

- they've made him an honorary member. So what does Jip bring to

:22:37.:22:41.

the team? Well you could say he's a real high flier, as Abbie Jones has

:22:41.:22:45.

been finding out. Meet Jip, the border collie. She's

:22:45.:22:50.

a dog of many talents. In fact, when it comes to doggie tricks, Jip

:22:50.:23:00.
:23:00.:23:07.

Jip's athletic fetching skills have earned her a place in the pub's

:23:07.:23:12.

darts team. And she's really hit the bull's-eye with its members.

:23:12.:23:17.

Nothing like it before. There is no like it in this town. Definitely

:23:17.:23:22.

not! She is brilliant. You don't have to get your darts out of the

brought you any luck? Loads of luck. She puts the opposition of like you

Kenny's got more tricks in store for Jip, but for now, she's

:24:09.:24:19.
:24:19.:24:24.

What a dark! Something to make you happy. She looked like she was on a

:24:24.:24:33.

trampoline. Maybe call her the ultimate retriever. I know!

:24:33.:24:37.

Yesterday, around this time, we were asking Diane how we could

:24:37.:24:42.

spice up her walk. We have got some excellent suggestions that came in.

:24:42.:24:47.

Anyway, do one of the first ones. I'm going to stand here, I am not

:24:47.:24:56.

Debate turned out to be better than we anticipated. We talked about

:24:56.:25:02.

showers, there were some, but for many places we were bone dry. There

:25:02.:25:07.

was a real nice afternoon of sunshine for most of us. You can

:25:07.:25:10.

track the showers that move into Cumbria. Over the last couple of

:25:11.:25:14.

hours, they became more widespread. But the story is for them to get

:25:14.:25:19.

out of the way this evening and for us to be fairly clear tonight.

:25:19.:25:24.

Unfortunately, it will feel fairly chilly again. It was cool last

:25:24.:25:28.

night. Same story tonight. You can see the lighter areas on the map

:25:28.:25:31.

and that is where the cloud cover will break. Overnight, temperatures

:25:31.:25:37.

could be as low as five. It will only be for a short while because

:25:37.:25:42.

the map is darkening in the south. An area of rain is pushing to us in

:25:42.:25:49.

the early hours of the morning. It will put further north later

:25:49.:25:53.

through the night. Overnight temperatures will be boosted a bit

:25:53.:25:57.

with the arrival of the cloud cover all rain, around seven degrees. But

:25:57.:26:02.

this is not a good picture. The brain pushes north and there is

:26:02.:26:06.

more to come. It will be light and patchy through the morning. Past

:26:06.:26:10.

lunch time, that is when it will take hold. There will be a heavy

:26:10.:26:13.

burst from time to time. If you are lucky, especially in parts of

:26:13.:26:17.

Cumbria, the Isle of Man and Lancashire, he will not see a lot

:26:17.:26:20.

because it is coming from the south. But through the afternoon, it will

:26:21.:26:24.

be trying to spread everywhere. Temperatures through the day were

:26:24.:26:29.

12 and 13 degrees, but you have the sunshine. Tomorrow, not a glimpse

:26:29.:26:33.

of sun so even though the same, it will feel fairly cool.

:26:34.:26:39.

We will brighten up your evening. I'm not looking forward to this.

:26:39.:26:44.

were talking about your walk and how to spice it up. Tony husband,

:26:53.:27:02.

Have a look. That is due in a bubble. I like the bobble! There

:27:02.:27:10.

are more, here we go. Chickpeas and a unicycle. Look at you in the
