Hello and Welcome to Northwest Tonight. A candlelit vigil is being

staged in Salford tonight in memory of an Indian student shot dead

there on Boxing Day. Anuj Bidve was studying at Lancaster University. A

man calling himself Psycho Stapleton appeared in court this

morning charged with his murder. Police officers from Greater

Manchester have visited Mr Bidve's family in India. Anuj Bidve was 23.

He was shot in the head in the early hours of Boxing Day morning.

He was studying at Lancaster University. This morning, a man

accused of his murder was brought to the dock, but appeared for only

a few minutes. When asked to confirm his name, he said his name

was Psycho Stapleton. He will be remanded to Manchester Crown Court.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police have travelled to Mr Bidve's

home in India. Today, they met his parents. There was support for the

family in the country's capital, New Delhi, with a peace march to

the British Embassy. Kiaran Stapleton was refused bail. Four

others have been arrested in connection withe the police inquiry.

defender Gary Ablett has died after a long battle against cancer. It's

understood he passed away peacefully last night. Tributes

have been pouring in from the footballing world, as Kate Simms

reports. A lovely man, a great servant, a true Scouser. Just some

of the tributes paid to Gary Ablett today. He died last night 16 months

after being diagnosed with non- Hodgkin's lymphoma. As a player,

Gary Ablett was loved on both sides of Stanley Park. A Liverpool lad,

he made 128 appearances for Everton and 109 for the red side of the

city. An exceptional player, a credit to the club. Gary Ablett

remains the only player who lifted the FA Cup for both Merseyside

clubs. Alan Hansen played with him at Liverpool. He was a lovely guy,

quiet and unassuming. Everybody loved him. For he was in the

dressing room when Liverpool wore one of the great teams. Talking to

two or three ex-players, we are absolutely stunned. But he was a

manager, too. He joined Stockport County in 2009, and although he was

here for just one season, fans remember him fondly. It is

understood that Stockport's players will wear black armbands this

weekend. Gary Ablett was just 46 years old. He leaves a wife and

three children. A canoeist is in hospital with

serious injuries after being rescued from an icy river in

Cumbria. She got caught up in fast- flowing waters in the River Rothee

near Sedbergh yesterday. Britain's first female track gold

medallist, Ann Brightwel, marked the start of 2012 by taking part in
