Our top story: A Merseyside mum calls for free removals after the | :00:12. | :00:16.
French breast implants scare. It is thought 1,000 women in | :00:16. | :00:21.
Merseyside may be affected. We will speak to the Shadow Health | :00:21. | :00:24.
Secretary. Battling the booze culture, why one | :00:24. | :00:29.
council plans to restrict new clubs and bars in the city centre. | :00:29. | :00:34.

world, why gadgets are starting to A mother from Merseyside says the | :01:05. | :01:08.
Government should force private clinics to offer free removals to | :01:08. | :01:14.
women who were given breast implants that are now at the centre | :01:14. | :01:20.
of an health scare. The company that make them have gone out of | :01:21. | :01:23.
business and in France the government is now paying for the | :01:23. | :01:28.
women to have them removed. Here, Ministers are holding back from | :01:28. | :01:32.
such measures. Dave Guest has more. | :01:32. | :01:37.
It is implants like this that are at the centre of the controversy. | :01:37. | :01:43.
PIP implants have been found to contain silicone normally used in | :01:43. | :01:45.
making mattresses. One UK specialist says they should never | :01:45. | :01:53.
have been implanted into humans. Obtaining accurate figures is | :01:53. | :01:58.
difficult. One estimate puts it at 42,000 and it is reported 1,000 of | :01:58. | :02:00.
those could be on Merseyside. I have been to meet one of those | :02:00. | :02:05.
women who wants the Government to take a tougher line with private | :02:05. | :02:09.
clinics. Jane Parry at home in Huyton with | :02:09. | :02:15.
her daughter. The building blocks are one of Olivia's Christmas gifts. | :02:15. | :02:20.
Mum got an unusual present. Her family paid for her to have an MRI | :02:20. | :02:24.
scan because she is worried about the ill effects that may be caused | :02:24. | :02:30.
by her PIP breast implants. I got a call to say they haven't ruptured. | :02:30. | :02:34.
But I want them out before they do. Jane is one of thousands of women | :02:35. | :02:39.
who received PIP implants, some of which have been found to contain | :02:39. | :02:44.
non-medical grade silicone. I had implants put in for my own reasons. | :02:45. | :02:49.
I didn't ask for non-medical grade gel to be put into my body. What | :02:49. | :02:54.
would you like to be done? Government has to say to the | :02:54. | :03:00.
clinics, "You have to replace the implants." Andy Burnham agrees the | :03:00. | :03:10.
Government needs to put pressure on clinics to help them. We have got | :03:10. | :03:18.
to see it facing up to its responsibility. For Jane, there is | :03:18. | :03:22.
an added complication, the clinic has gone out of business. | :03:22. | :03:26.
The Government has set up an expert review to assess just how much of a | :03:26. | :03:30.
risk women face. It's ordered private clinics to provide the | :03:30. | :03:34.
review panel with accurate statistics on how many PIP implants | :03:34. | :03:37.
have ruptured. The Health Secretary expects to have that information by | :03:37. | :03:42.
the end of the week. He says the Government will do whatever is | :03:42. | :03:48.
right based on the evidence to ensure the safety of women. | :03:48. | :03:51.
A Liverpool City Council could be calling time on new alcohol | :03:51. | :03:56.
licences in parts of the city centre. Councillors met to look at | :03:56. | :04:00.
proposals to stop new late-night venues from opening. The number of | :04:00. | :04:05.
pubs and bars have doubled in the last decade and there are concerns | :04:05. | :04:09.
the police can't control the resulting crime. Nina Warhurst | :04:09. | :04:18.
joins us now. Good evening. I'm in the Ropewalks area of the city. It | :04:18. | :04:28.
:04:28. | :04:28. | ||
is quiet tonight. It does get very lively around here. In fact a | :04:28. | :04:32.
little bit too lively, so much so that some councillors met this | :04:32. | :04:35.
morning with locals and with Merseyside Police. They say they | :04:35. | :04:40.
are sick and tired of late-night revellers who don't know when time | :04:40. | :04:46.
is up. So they have said enough is enough and we want to make a change. | :04:46. | :04:51.
It doesn't just happen in Liverpool. A knees up leading to a punch up, a | :04:51. | :04:55.
night on the tiles turning into a night in the cells. It could become | :04:55. | :05:00.
the norm to refuse new liquor licences for late-night clubs and | :05:00. | :05:04.
bars in the Ropewalks area, as well as parts of the Cavern Quarter, | :05:04. | :05:09.
Victoria Street and parts of Matthew Street. Supporters say | :05:09. | :05:13.
current problems put too much strain on public services. There is | :05:13. | :05:21.
a risk with too many new licensed premises open it will place | :05:21. | :05:24.
additional burdens. Could the measures discriminate against | :05:24. | :05:29.
exciting new businesses with big potential? I think it is a bad idea. | :05:29. | :05:34.
If that restriction would have been in six months ago, this venue | :05:34. | :05:40.
wouldn't have been open now. Crime and anti-social behaviour are two | :05:40. | :05:44.
of the reasons behind the proposals. But there are some who fear that | :05:44. | :05:48.
restricting licences fails to deal with the causes of the current | :05:48. | :05:53.
problems. The tools are there to deal with badly-managed premises. | :05:53. | :05:58.
What we shouldn't do is penalise new businesses for badly-managed | :05:59. | :06:02.
current businesses which wouldn't be affected by the policy. It | :06:02. | :06:06.
doesn't make sense. Merseyside Police back the proposals and | :06:06. | :06:11.
stress that Liverpool remains a great place to work, live and | :06:11. | :06:19.
socialise. They say these measures could help it to stay that way. | :06:19. | :06:22.
That is important to stress that Liverpool is still a very safe | :06:22. | :06:26.
place to come out drinking. It is also important to stress that those | :06:26. | :06:29.
measures aren't definite yet and if they do go ahead, they do only | :06:30. | :06:34.
affect those small parts of the city centre that I mentioned | :06:34. | :06:37.
earlier. Liverpool City Council say if you live in the area, if you are | :06:37. | :06:43.
a business person in the area and you have your own views, get in | :06:43. | :06:46.
touch with them. The final council meeting, which will decide whether | :06:46. | :06:51.
the plans go ahead, happens in two weeks. | :06:51. | :06:58.
Thank you very much. So, do you think that there are too many pubs | :06:58. | :07:03.
and clubs in your area? Perhaps you think they do make where you live | :07:03. | :07:08.
more lively. Or do you agree that they increase | :07:08. | :07:18.
:07:18. | :07:21. | ||
anti-social behaviour? Whatever More of today's news: Almost three- | :07:21. | :07:25.
quarters of a million people in the North West are relying on credit to | :07:25. | :07:29.
pay their rent or mortgage, according to Shelter. Those | :07:29. | :07:34.
affected are having to take out payday loans to avoid losing their | :07:34. | :07:38.
homes. The family of a Lancaster University student shot dead last | :07:38. | :07:44.
week are flying into the UK. Anuj Bidve, a 23-year-old student, was | :07:44. | :07:49.
killed on Boxing Day. His family are expected to visit the scene on | :07:49. | :07:52.
Friday before taking his body home. A 20-year-old man has appeared in | :07:52. | :07:57.
court charged with his murder. The family of a Merseyside | :07:57. | :08:01.
pensioner who went missing during a hiking trip to the Canary Islands | :08:01. | :08:06.
have made an appeal for information. 65-year-old Margaret Holt was last | :08:06. | :08:16.
:08:16. | :08:17. | ||
seen in Lanzarote on 23rd December. We are very concerned. I think the | :08:17. | :08:24.
key thing is and my focus is on trying to find my mother. We need | :08:24. | :08:29.
to concentrate on the 23rd December and concentrate on the northern | :08:29. | :08:33.
part of the island. All police officers on duty at Sunday's | :08:33. | :08:37.
Manchester FA Cup derby will be wearing full riot gear. It is the | :08:37. | :08:41.
first time they will all be asked to wear that protective uniform and | :08:41. | :08:45.
the move comes after one police officer was left partially-sighted | :08:45. | :08:52.
after being struck by a missile at a previous derby match. | :08:53. | :08:55.
The Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish, has again defended the | :08:55. | :09:00.
way his club has handled the Luis Suarez affair. Liverpool decided | :09:00. | :09:04.
yesterday not to appeal the ban for racial abuse. Dalglish said there | :09:04. | :09:08.
are facts in the case which still haven't come out yet and now there | :09:08. | :09:12.
is growing criticism over the club's continued insistence that | :09:13. | :09:19.
Suarez has done nothing wrong. Luis Suarez smiles down from | :09:19. | :09:23.
Anfield today, but he and his club are still seething. They have | :09:23. | :09:27.
decided not to appeal against his eight-match ban because it would | :09:27. | :09:31.
obscure efforts to stamp out racism in football. They still say he has | :09:31. | :09:35.
done nothing wrong and they were right to wear T-shirts to support | :09:35. | :09:40.
him. If one of your guys was in trouble, would you help him if you | :09:40. | :09:45.
knew it was right? Would you support him? If they want to show | :09:45. | :09:49.
support for a team-mate, what is wrong with that? Suarez was banned | :09:49. | :09:53.
for racially abused Patrice Evra. The FA said he used a racial term | :09:53. | :09:58.
seven times during a match in October. And gave unreliable and | :09:59. | :10:02.
inconsistent evidence. Some think Liverpool should apologise. In my | :10:02. | :10:06.
view, that would be the correct thing to do. That would help speed | :10:06. | :10:10.
the process of people moving on. Maybe dealing with the situation so | :10:10. | :10:15.
it doesn't happen in the future. While the stance is one of trying | :10:15. | :10:20.
to say he's done nothing wrong, it goes against the spirit of our | :10:20. | :10:24.
league. One football expert says Liverpool's response has been | :10:24. | :10:30.
confused. The club has to be very careful that it doesn't appear to | :10:30. | :10:34.
be approving of the kind of behaviour that Suarez has been | :10:34. | :10:38.
found guilty of. Suarez's ban started with last night's defeat at | :10:38. | :10:43.
Manchester City. It is clear that Liverpool's sense of injustice | :10:43. | :10:46.
burns just as fiercely as the opinions of those who think the | :10:46. | :10:50.
club have played a poor hand in all this. If the results over the next | :10:50. | :10:54.
seven matches are as poor as the result last night, that sense of | :10:54. | :11:02.
injustice can only deepen. Tony will be here with the sport | :11:02. | :11:08.
later. Now, these are tough economic times. | :11:08. | :11:12.
So how come sales of a prestigious car made in Cheshire are soaring? | :11:12. | :11:18.
Bentley, which employs 4,000 workers, saw worldwide sales jump | :11:18. | :11:23.
by 37% last year. China is an important new market. Here, sales | :11:23. | :11:29.
were up by 5%. Who is buying them? It's one of the slowest production | :11:29. | :11:33.
lines in the world. If you stare hard enough, you will just about | :11:33. | :11:37.
see that that car is moving. But then it takes a long time to make a | :11:37. | :11:42.
Bentley. This factory in Crewe will turn out no more than 30 today. | :11:42. | :11:45.
Each one tailored to a particular buyer. But one thing all the buyers | :11:46. | :11:51.
have in common is money. customers are wide and varied. They | :11:51. | :11:55.
are all successful people that work very hard, of course... They are | :11:55. | :12:05.
all rich? They are not necessarily rich. They have funds to spend. | :12:05. | :12:10.
These cars start at 140,000? do. Of course, they take the choice | :12:10. | :12:15.
based on the value that they are getting. Sales are up 37% worldwide. | :12:15. | :12:20.
China's a big new market. But sales have improved in the US, Europe and | :12:21. | :12:26.
the UK, not everyone it seems is tightening the belt. In times of | :12:26. | :12:30.
recession, rich people, people who have been very successful, maybe | :12:30. | :12:33.
they want to demonstrate how successful they are. What better | :12:33. | :12:38.
way than to buy a supercar. years ago falling sales led to | :12:38. | :12:43.
hundreds of job cuts and short time working here. Bentley appears to be | :12:43. | :12:52.
weathering the storm. The company was taken over by VW in 1998. 4,000 | :12:52. | :12:56.
people work here. The sales figures are good news for those workers and | :12:56. | :13:04.
for the Cheshire businesses where they spend their money. | :13:04. | :13:13.
I will be getting a Fred Flintstone one! Still to come: The science | :13:13. | :13:18.
behind cycling success. We meet the Manchester team helping Britain to | :13:18. | :13:22.
Olympic glory. Riding home to a civic reception, | :13:22. | :13:26.
Paul Hanagan receives plaudits from the people of Warrington. | :13:26. | :13:32.
It means ever so much. I mean, it brings it all back, really. It | :13:32. | :13:39.
seems a while ago now that I was crowned champion. | :13:39. | :13:44.
He was the country's most controversial police officer. Sir | :13:44. | :13:47.
Jim Anderton was Chief Constable of Greater Manchester police | :13:47. | :13:51.
throughout the 1980s and was guided by his Christian faith. One remark | :13:51. | :13:56.
in particular about AIDS victims triggered a move to force him out. | :13:56. | :13:59.
Now Government papers showed the Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, | :13:59. | :14:06.
helped to save his career. He could inspire loyalty and | :14:06. | :14:11.
loathing, but even by Sir Jim Anderton's standards, this was | :14:11. | :14:17.
blunt language. AIDS victims he said were swirling around in a | :14:17. | :14:21.
human cesspool of their own making. The then Labour Leader had enough. | :14:21. | :14:31.
:14:31. | :14:40. | ||
I was appalled at many of the statements that Sir Jim Anderton | :14:40. | :14:45.
made at the time. He was clearly creating tension between very | :14:45. | :14:50.
different ethnic communities in Manchester. He was targeting gay | :14:50. | :14:55.
groups in a very prejudiced way. The man was not fit to hold public | :14:55. | :14:59.
office. I wanted the Government to have an inquiry with the result I | :14:59. | :15:02.
would have hoped for of getting rid of him! The Prime Minister, | :15:02. | :15:06.
Margaret Thatcher, wanted to keep him, a suggestion that he would | :15:06. | :15:09.
need to clear future statements was shot down by Downing Street in the | :15:09. | :15:19.
:15:19. | :15:30. | ||
At the time, the disease wasn't - people didn't think it was as | :15:30. | :15:35.
serious as it really was. I don't think you could say that sort of | :15:35. | :15:39.
thing nowadays. There's too much political correctness in society | :15:39. | :15:46.
nowadays. People are frightened of telling the truth. To some, moral, | :15:46. | :15:50.
to others prejudiced, but almost certainly naive. The documents | :15:50. | :15:53.
include a Home Office official explaining that Jim Anderton | :15:53. | :15:58.
thought there would have been no reason for him to anticipate any | :15:58. | :16:04.
controversy. Time for sport now. Tony is here. | :16:04. | :16:10.
Happy New Year! From that to Suarez. There's been | :16:10. | :16:15.
more reaction tonight? There has. Lots of people intervening. Gordon | :16:15. | :16:19.
Taylor is the latest, the Chief Executive of the professional | :16:19. | :16:21.
Football Association. He said tonight the punishment imposed on | :16:21. | :16:25.
Suarez sent out a clear warning that racism will not be tolerated | :16:25. | :16:35.
:16:35. | :16:45. | ||
in football. He's issued a Apart from the damaging effect this | :16:45. | :16:49.
is having on Liverpool's reputation, it is also starting to have an | :16:49. | :16:53.
impact on the pitch? It is. They played without him last night | :16:53. | :16:59.
against Manchester City and they lost 3-0. Fans will be hoping that | :16:59. | :17:04.
he doesn't do irreparable damage to their Champions League hopes. City | :17:04. | :17:09.
marches on though. Manchester United are at Newcastle tonight. | :17:09. | :17:14.
What will happen with Wayne Rooney? He got fined a week's wages on | :17:14. | :17:21.
Boxing Day? That is what that they say. He's accepted his fine as well. | :17:21. | :17:25.
United fans will be desperate that he steps up tonight. They want | :17:25. | :17:28.
three points at Newcastle to stay level with Manchester City. For | :17:28. | :17:32.
these two rivals at the top at the moment, it is all about who can | :17:32. | :17:37.
hold their nerve. Manchester City may have wobbled | :17:37. | :17:40.
against Sunderland, but when Liverpool came calling, the wobble | :17:40. | :17:45.
was on the other foot. Pepe Reine should have saved Aguera's effort, | :17:46. | :17:49.
and Glen Johnson should have done more to prevent Yaya Toure making | :17:49. | :17:54.
it two. By the time Gareth Barry had been sent off, the Reds were | :17:54. | :18:00.
not helping themselves. James Milner made it three from the spot. | :18:00. | :18:03.
United fans will hope for a similar response from their side at | :18:03. | :18:08.
Newcastle tonight after that 3-2 home defeat to Blackburn. Rooney | :18:08. | :18:13.
will play as they play catch-up. The only thing on his menu tonight? | :18:13. | :18:18.
Goals. Which side of Manchester has got the bottle? I have had my head | :18:18. | :18:22.
in my hands for 35 years watching the Blues. Of course it could go | :18:22. | :18:27.
wrong. If I was a betting man, I would put my money on City. This | :18:27. | :18:37.
:18:37. | :18:37. | ||
bloke is a Blue. Watch his wife's face. They know now they have to | :18:37. | :18:40.
own it. Manchester United have more experience. They want to win. They | :18:40. | :18:48.
didn't want to win last Saturday! Pressures of a different sort for | :18:48. | :18:53.
Wigan who stay in the bottom three after a thumping by Sunderland. | :18:53. | :19:01.
Hugo Rodellaga's goal was only a consolation. What's no consolation | :19:01. | :19:05.
is that the next survival game is against Manchester City. | :19:05. | :19:09.
Steve Kean might have hoped that the demonstrations against him | :19:09. | :19:13.
would end, but following Monday's defeat at home to Stoke, | :19:13. | :19:18.
supporters' groups say they will be resuming their protests with | :19:18. | :19:21.
increased intensity. The organisers' aim is to remove Kean | :19:21. | :19:25.
as manager, the Venkys as owners and to replace the current Board of | :19:25. | :19:29.
Directors. The American World Cup star Landon Donovan could play his | :19:29. | :19:34.
first game for Everton tonight as they take on Bolton. Donovan's re- | :19:34. | :19:44.
joined Everton on a two-month loan from LA Galaxy. Owen Coyle hopes to | :19:44. | :19:54.
:19:54. | :19:58. | ||
play Gary Cahill tonight. Gary has coped with endless speculation over | :19:58. | :20:05.
the last two years. He is so focused on his football. That is | :20:05. | :20:14.
why clubs want him. He has all those attributes. Wales have to | :20:14. | :20:18.
play Costa Rica to honour Gary Speed, who was found hanged at his | :20:18. | :20:24.
home in November. The game will be played in Cardiff on February 29th. | :20:25. | :20:30.
Now, Warrington's Champion jockey Paul Hanagan is used to winning. | :20:30. | :20:35.
Today he was given an honour that was very close to his heart. He was | :20:35. | :20:41.
guest of honour at a special reception in his hometown. He is | :20:41. | :20:46.
still extremely humble about his star status. | :20:46. | :20:50.
An achievement recognised as one of the greatest in his sport was today | :20:51. | :20:55.
officially recognised by his hometown. The plaque and small | :20:55. | :20:59.
gathering at the town hall low-key for a man who boasts an incredible | :20:59. | :21:04.
record but doesn't like to boast. don't think I could achieve what I | :21:04. | :21:11.
have done if I wasn't from Warrington. It was a really good | :21:11. | :21:16.
upbringing. So, yeah, very proud moment. As a Warrington lad, we are | :21:16. | :21:21.
very proud of him. Extremely proud of his achievements. As a double- | :21:21. | :21:25.
winning Champion jockey, Paul has had more than his fair share of | :21:25. | :21:31.
accolades. But what does he make of what he's achieved? I'm very proud. | :21:31. | :21:38.
I'm more delighted for my parents. I started off as a stable hand. | :21:38. | :21:44.
is a commitment that takes its toll. Last year, Paul rode in 1,200 races, | :21:44. | :21:49.
travelling by car over 100,000 miles up-and-down the country. Paul, | :21:49. | :21:53.
you have hinted that because of the number of miles you have to travel | :21:53. | :21:57.
and the number of rides that you might not defend your title. Have | :21:57. | :22:04.
you made your mind up? It is a strenuous season. But once you have | :22:04. | :22:09.
recharged the batteries, you then get your fitness back, you never | :22:09. | :22:14.
know. An indication he has got bigger prizes in mind. What price | :22:14. | :22:24.
:22:24. | :22:31. | ||
Mr Hanagan riding a Derby winner? Richard was stood on a doorstep! | :22:31. | :22:35.
What was your favourite Christmas present? I e-mailed my wife six | :22:35. | :22:41.
books I wanted and none of them arrived! Excellent(!) Maybe you | :22:41. | :22:47.
have got an iPhone, iPad, video camera, a smartphone, lots of | :22:47. | :22:50.
people did. Improvements in technology have changed many | :22:50. | :22:54.
people's lives. They have also revolutionised the world of sport | :22:54. | :23:00.
science. In the second of his special series, Stuart Pollitt has | :23:00. | :23:08.
been given access to the English Institute of Sport in Manchester. | :23:08. | :23:18.
:23:18. | :23:28. | ||
Hoy has got it! He will get the bronze. Behind those successes, are | :23:28. | :23:32.
the people who work behind those doors. This is the team behind the | :23:32. | :23:42.
:23:42. | :23:44. | ||
team. The British cycling team is the envy of the world so too is | :23:44. | :23:49.
their use of sports science and the latest technology. High in the | :23:49. | :23:53.
stands, armed with gadgets, performance analysts are as much | :23:53. | :23:57.
against the clock as the riders, racing to get stats to the middle | :23:57. | :24:03.
of the track. That video is streamed down, it is accessible by | :24:04. | :24:09.
the iPad touch displays. We have it down to one or two minutes after | :24:09. | :24:14.
the riders have finished that effort. In other events, such as | :24:14. | :24:19.
your team pursuit, where there's often four or five hours between | :24:19. | :24:24.
the rounds, that allows us to do a level of analysis on their | :24:24. | :24:34.
:24:34. | :24:34. | ||
performance. A mile away, athletes can't escape analysis. It may look | :24:34. | :24:37.
like a Sports Hall, but you will find a total of seven hidden | :24:37. | :24:42.
cameras - four on that wall, two on that wall and one on the ceiling. | :24:42. | :24:48.
They are pointed on the fighters. They have been essential in giving | :24:48. | :24:54.
the fighters here that extra edge. It makes such a difference. Not | :24:54. | :25:01.
many teams have this. You don't feel you are on an episode of Big | :25:01. | :25:08.
Brother? Not quite! I suppose it is an intimidation factor when they | :25:08. | :25:13.
see the level our athletes can get day-to-day. Another example of how | :25:14. | :25:17.
those behind-the-scenes are making sure our athletes will be better | :25:17. | :25:26.
prepared than ever for the Olympics. Fascinating. We were promised lots | :25:26. | :25:33.
of rain yesterday. I believe it is still chucking it down. I cannot | :25:33. | :25:40.
tell you how fed up I am of tell you how fed up I am of | :25:40. | :25:41.
bringing you all of this miserable news! It doesn't get any better. I | :25:41. | :25:44.
suppose tomorrow afternoon, there is a chance you could see some | :25:44. | :25:47.
brighter conditions working their way through. Through the day today, | :25:47. | :25:55.
the rain kept on coming for many and it will keep on coming. Add to | :25:55. | :26:05.
:26:05. | :26:11. | ||
that the wind, it will be gusty to gale force at times. Look at this, | :26:11. | :26:16.
this rain. Once you get past midnight, we will start to see this | :26:16. | :26:23.
rain breaking up. That is another grim night. It is wet, it is windy. | :26:23. | :26:31.
In terms of temperatures, it won't be too chilly. Now, when you get up | :26:31. | :26:34.
first thing, you will not notice the join. The cloud cover is still | :26:34. | :26:38.
around, the rain will keep on coming through the morning. You can | :26:38. | :26:41.
see the wind has changed to a north-westerly. It is still very | :26:41. | :26:44.
strong, though. Showers will die out as the morning goes on. Look | :26:44. | :26:47.
what happens as you head towards the tail end of the day. The sun | :26:47. | :26:52.
will start to come out for many places. After lunch, the sun will | :26:52. | :26:57.
start to get into the Isle of Man. We will all start to see drier | :26:57. | :27:02.
conditions. Towards tea time, the showers and the cloud start back | :27:02. | :27:06.
all over again. That wind will continue to be strong and gusty all | :27:06. | :27:15.
the way through taking the edge off the temperatures. We have been | :27:15. | :27:20.
looking for jobs - there is a weather presenter's job in | :27:20. | :27:28.
California! I lost my brolly today! It turned inside out. People have | :27:28. | :27:34. |
