Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson - and | :00:20. | :00:26.
Kate Simms. Our top story. The honeymoon nightmare. An inquest | :00:26. | :00:36.
:00:36. | :00:37. | ||
hears of Ian Redmond's final moments before a shark killed him. | :00:37. | :00:42.
One of pop superstars - we are joined in the studio by JLS, ahead | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :01:00. | ||
of a sell-out weekend in Manchester. Ian Redmond was an intelligent and | :01:00. | :01:10.
:01:10. | :01:12. | ||
caring, successful man. He was a software developer from Lancashire | :01:12. | :01:15.
- who married his wife Gemma at a church in Wigan last August. Just | :01:15. | :01:19.
ten days later he was killed in a shark attack while still on | :01:19. | :01:21.
honeymoon. Today an inquest into his death heard there were no | :01:21. | :01:24.
warning on signs on the Seychelles beach where Ian died. But there'd | :01:24. | :01:28.
been no shark attacks on the island for 50 years before last August. | :01:28. | :01:36.
Andy Gill reports. Sir, We have a major problem with the sound on | :01:36. | :01:40.
that report. We will get a fix as soon as we can and come back to | :01:40. | :01:50.
:01:50. | :02:01. | ||
that story. Before that - our next story. Police identify a woman | :02:01. | :02:07.
found dead on a busy commuter route - according to CCTV images, he | :02:07. | :02:15.
picks up her shoes and possibly her hand back. There possibly damaged - | :02:15. | :02:20.
- the badly damaged body was found yesterday, she had been hit by a | :02:20. | :02:24.
number of vehicles. We hope by releasing energy of this man, that | :02:24. | :02:31.
he will come forward or people will recognise him. -- the image of this | :02:31. | :02:35.
man. We are keen to speak to him and find out the whereabouts of the | :02:35. | :02:40.
shoes and handbag. Police say it is possible the items were taking in | :02:40. | :02:45.
good faith, but they want them back, especially the hand back because | :02:45. | :02:51.
they are struggling to identify the woman. They Asian woman was wearing | :02:51. | :02:55.
a saffron and Siri and gold bangles. A truck driver arrested on | :02:55. | :03:01.
suspicion of murder was arrested -- was released without charge. | :03:01. | :03:11.
:03:11. | :03:13. | ||
Another man remains in custody. 600 jobs at BAE Systems in | :03:13. | :03:16.
Lancashire have been secured - after the company won a 446 million | :03:16. | :03:19.
pound contract to support Europe's fleet of Typhoon jets. Workers at | :03:19. | :03:21.
the Warton and Samlesbury sites will provide engineering support | :03:21. | :03:24.
for the next five years. The Liverpool celebrity hairdresser | :03:24. | :03:28.
Herbert Howe has pulled out of the race to be the city's first elected | :03:28. | :03:32.
mayor. His announcement comes just a day after he launched his | :03:32. | :03:42.
:03:42. | :03:46. | ||
election campaign - ahead of the vote on May the third. The funeral | :03:46. | :03:49.
of Vinny Derrick has taken place in Altrincham - nearly nine years | :03:49. | :03:51.
after his disappearance. His remains were found earlier this | :03:51. | :03:54.
year. Vinny had a night out in Manchester in 2003 and was never | :03:54. | :03:58.
seen alive again. His family still don't know for certain how he died. | :03:58. | :04:00.
Stuart Flinders reports. It's eight and a half years since | :04:00. | :04:04.
Vinny Derrick's family last saw him alive. Today, they paid their final | :04:04. | :04:07.
respects. Amongst those present, Vinny's brother, who travelled from | :04:07. | :04:17.
:04:17. | :04:20. | ||
Australia to be here. But many of their questions remain unanswered. | :04:20. | :04:25.
What did happen to him? His body was found beside the road, a post- | :04:25. | :04:29.
mortem revealed he had a number of bones. The police believe he may | :04:29. | :04:32.
have been involved in a road accident, but their investigation | :04:32. | :04:35.
is still going on. In August 2003 Vinny Derrick | :04:35. | :04:37.
disappeared after a night out with workmates in Manchester. It's | :04:37. | :04:41.
thought he got out of a taxi at Handforth Dean on the A34. Until | :04:41. | :04:44.
his body was found in January of this year, nobody could be certain | :04:44. | :04:52.
he hadn't chosen to disappear, abandoning his wife and child. | :04:52. | :04:58.
never believed that he had chosen to disappear. Eight years on, I | :04:58. | :05:03.
really thought it would be easier to deal with but it is not. | :05:03. | :05:05.
At the funeral, a request for donations to the charity, Missing | :05:05. | :05:13.
People. We're helping them to know and accept that you really is dead, | :05:13. | :05:18.
after all that has gone on for him. The nightmare of waiting for over | :05:19. | :05:22.
each years, to accept the reality of that, as well as talking about | :05:22. | :05:24.
the past and what they have been through. | :05:24. | :05:27.
Vinny Derrick's family will now be looking to an inquest to answer | :05:27. | :05:35.
questions they've lived with for nearly nine years. We were trying | :05:35. | :05:39.
take you back to our top story now which is the inquest into the death | :05:39. | :05:42.
of Ian Redmond. The inquest heard it was an | :05:43. | :05:48.
accidental death. Even red in's widow, here in the | :05:48. | :05:53.
centre, arrives at the inquest into the death of her husband. She told | :05:53. | :05:57.
they inquest about how they met at Manchester University and the | :05:57. | :06:02.
wedding last August. After they married, they went is seashells on | :06:02. | :06:12.
:06:12. | :06:13. | ||
honeymoon. After snorkelling, Ian was attacked by a shark. | :06:13. | :06:18.
I am sorry, we seem to be having a real problem with that report. We | :06:18. | :06:24.
will try return to it later in the programme. Our sincere apologies. | :06:24. | :06:29.
His family say he was treated like a caged animal - their teenage son | :06:29. | :06:33.
was locked in a padded and to control his behaviour. It happened | :06:33. | :06:38.
in the Beech Tree School under a care package put together by Wigan | :06:39. | :06:43.
council. The action has been ruled unlawful. What is the background to | :06:44. | :06:50.
this story? For legal reasons we can only refer to the boy as C. He | :06:50. | :06:56.
suffers from severe autism. Wigging council said he should be treated | :06:56. | :07:02.
at the beech tree special school in Preston. -- went in. Initially, his | :07:02. | :07:07.
family say his care was very good but then he spent increasing | :07:07. | :07:11.
amounts of time in a blue ruin - a padded room where he was locked in | :07:11. | :07:21.
alone, sometimes for hours at a time. At least a caged animal has | :07:21. | :07:26.
run to roam, and he is with other animals. He was in solitary in that | :07:26. | :07:32.
run. It is so difficult as a mother, because I would think what else can | :07:32. | :07:39.
I do as a mother to help him? door would bang endlessly as my | :07:39. | :07:43.
brother try to fight his way out. You would hear the walls banging | :07:43. | :07:49.
and she knew it was my brother, hitting his head on the wall. -- | :07:49. | :07:57.
you knew. How did the boy's health deteriorates? The school is run by | :07:57. | :08:01.
a charity and we spoke to them earlier today, they have that | :08:01. | :08:05.
knowledge serious mistakes were made and changes have been made. | :08:06. | :08:11.
But the idea he displayed was very unpredictable and volatile, violent | :08:11. | :08:18.
and aggressive. -- their behaviour. It took us way beyond our | :08:18. | :08:26.
experience and expertise. Last year a judge said that, under the Human | :08:26. | :08:30.
Rights Act, the boy had been treated and lawfully. They told us | :08:30. | :08:34.
the initial package of care was approved by the family and the | :08:34. | :08:39.
courts and they have now agreed compensation. The family say that | :08:39. | :08:44.
under the new care he has, he has come on leaps and bounce and his | :08:44. | :08:49.
health has improved but they're still waiting for an apology from | :08:49. | :08:53.
the council and the charity. Thank you very much. | :08:53. | :08:56.
Still to come on North West Tonight. She's being hailed as the possible | :08:56. | :08:59.
savour of the High Street. Today the Government accepted the | :08:59. | :09:01.
recommendations of Mary Portas to kick-start our ailing shopping | :09:01. | :09:04.
centres. It's also the deadline for towns bidding for a share of 10 | :09:04. | :09:08.
million and a bit of direct advice from Mary herself. One of those is | :09:08. | :09:15.
Crewe - from where Laura Yates joins us. | :09:15. | :09:19.
Take a look. And you can easily see why it could do with a bit of | :09:19. | :09:29.
:09:29. | :09:35. | ||
stardust sprinkled over it .. Boarded up shops. The council think | :09:35. | :09:41.
she can fix the old high street. They want to turn things around | :09:41. | :09:47.
with her ideas. We will be here in Crewe are all here, because this is | :09:47. | :09:52.
our economy town. We had been meeting people at all week and | :09:52. | :09:57.
tonight we meet the Darlington sisters who run a thriving family | :09:57. | :10:07.
:10:07. | :10:13. | ||
business, but can they take it global? It's a company with a 2 | :10:13. | :10:16.
million pound turnover. More than 70 jams, chutneys and sauces. Sold | :10:16. | :10:19.
all over the UK. But it all began thirty years ago on the family farm | :10:19. | :10:23.
with a few cracked eggs. Mum and dad had a glut of eggs on | :10:23. | :10:30.
the farm so dad suggested mum make lemon curd tried to sell it. Within | :10:30. | :10:33.
a week it had sold out and she wanted some more. | :10:33. | :10:36.
From humble beginnings then to much greater things. Mrs Darlington | :10:36. | :10:39.
joined by one daughter and then the other. | :10:39. | :10:42.
From the farmhouse kitchen to a purpose built factory too. Although | :10:42. | :10:50.
many old faces remain. Collecting eggs at the farm to | :10:50. | :10:54.
start with and then marion asked me would I like to start in the | :10:54. | :10:58.
kitchen with her and I thought I'll give it a go and here I am thirty | :10:58. | :11:02.
years later still here. Business is good. But growth has | :11:02. | :11:06.
slowed. The cost of ingredients is going up all the time. Sugar by | :11:06. | :11:11.
almost 50% in the last six months. Fruit and glass too. | :11:11. | :11:16.
And then there are the local shops. I think the biggest thing we're | :11:16. | :11:26.
:11:26. | :11:27. | ||
finding is that the high street is struggling. So many cuxtomers shut | :11:27. | :11:32.
their doors for the final time which is very sad. So the family | :11:32. | :11:34.
has one eye on something else. A bigger, international market. To | :11:35. | :11:37.
try and break into. For us export is the big | :11:37. | :11:39.
opportunity right now there are some really exciting things going | :11:40. | :11:45.
on we're talking to the US to China and in Canada. | :11:45. | :11:48.
Can the Darlingtons take their jams abroad? How will they deal with | :11:48. | :11:58.
:11:58. | :12:00. | ||
rising prices and a struggling high street? We'll be back to see soon. | :12:00. | :12:03.
Much more on all the people we've introduced you to and Crewe in the | :12:03. | :12:07.
weeks and months to come. And as always please do get in touch if | :12:07. | :12:10.
you live or work in Crewe or if you have something to say about your | :12:10. | :12:17.
high street - usual addresses - high street - usual addresses - | :12:17. | :12:27.
:12:27. | :12:27. | ||
high street - usual addresses - email, facebook or twitter. | :12:27. | :12:30.
Sport now Tony and first up, something for every fan of whatever | :12:30. | :12:35.
team to celebrate. Absolutely. Ever since Bolton's Fabrice Muamba | :12:35. | :12:38.
collapsed on the pitch at White Hart Lane almost two weeks ago | :12:38. | :12:43.
football has been praying for him. Well, his recovery appears to be | :12:43. | :12:49.
continuing. Have a look at this. It's a picture of the midfielder in | :12:49. | :12:52.
hospital tweeted by his fiancee Shauna who said, '"Fab wanted me to | :12:52. | :12:55.
post this pic for you all and to also say thank you for such | :12:55. | :13:02.
overwhelming support." It's a brilliant picture and the | :13:02. | :13:06.
doctor treating him says the recovery is 'miraculous'. Well, | :13:06. | :13:09.
when you listen to what happened you can understand why. He was | :13:09. | :13:11.
technically 'dead' for 78 minutes and received 15 defibrillator | :13:11. | :13:14.
shocks, 12 in the ambulance on the way to hospital. So it's worth | :13:14. | :13:21.
another look at him today. Bolton have said even if he doesn't play | :13:21. | :13:27.
football again the club will find a role for him. Certainly seems like | :13:27. | :13:33.
we're going to get a happy ending. So well done, Muamba, I'm not sure | :13:33. | :13:35.
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is as inclined to be as | :13:36. | :13:39.
nice about his star striker Sergio Aguero today. He's going to miss | :13:40. | :13:42.
Saturday's crucial Premier League game against Sunderland with what's | :13:42. | :13:47.
described as a 'stupid' foot injury. The Argentine has scored 24 goals | :13:47. | :13:50.
in 41 games but Mancini - who won't reveal exactly what caused the | :13:50. | :14:00.
problem - does concede it's not the player's fault. It is a stupid | :14:00. | :14:08.
injury, but not his fault. It is a stupid injury but, he cannot play | :14:08. | :14:15.
with his injury for a one-week or 10 days. | :14:15. | :14:17.
Top-of the-table Manchester United don't play until Monday at | :14:17. | :14:27.
:14:27. | :14:31. | ||
Blackburn. And just to finish off the football news for now the FA | :14:31. | :14:33.
Cup semi-final between Everton and Liverpool at Wembley on April the | :14:33. | :14:37.
14th will kick off at 1230. Cricket now and Lancashire have posted the | :14:37. | :14:40.
biggest losses of any first class County - almost four million pounds | :14:40. | :14:42.
for 2011. The County Champions say it's not a | :14:42. | :14:44.
surprise after the long running battle for planning permission to | :14:44. | :14:47.
redevelop Old Trafford and are confident their financial situation | :14:47. | :14:50.
will improve considerably with the sale of tickets for the 2013 Ashes | :14:50. | :14:54.
test. Two big ties in Super League this | :14:54. | :14:58.
evening. Wigan travel to the City of Salford Stadium to play the City | :14:58. | :15:00.
Reds, with both sides looking to bounce back after defeats last | :15:00. | :15:04.
weekend. And it's a sell-out at top of the table Warrington for their | :15:04. | :15:07.
game with St Helens - who have struggled this season, but hope to | :15:07. | :15:14.
build on last weekend's win over Leeds. It is very exciting, these | :15:14. | :15:19.
are the big games you want to be involved in. We're coming up | :15:19. | :15:23.
against Warrington who had been very consistent. It will be a big | :15:23. | :15:28.
test for us. We are great football team and individually, we play good | :15:28. | :15:31.
rugby. BBC Radio Merseyside has full | :15:31. | :15:33.
commentary of that match from 7.30pm tonight. Wigan's game with | :15:34. | :15:39.
Salford can be heard on BBC Radio Manchester. | :15:39. | :15:42.
This man will be keeping an eye on that game. St Helen's boxer Martin | :15:42. | :15:46.
Murray is a Saints fan and says he only has himself to blame after his | :15:46. | :15:49.
latest chance to try and win a world title fell through. The 29 | :15:49. | :15:51.
year old British middleweight champion was forced to withdraw | :15:51. | :15:54.
from a clash with Julio Cesar Chavez Junior after his application | :15:54. | :15:57.
for a visa to enter the United States was delayed by his criminal | :15:57. | :16:07.
past. Here's Stuart Pollitt. His career might be going places, but | :16:07. | :16:12.
he is not. He cannot get an American visa in time to fight the | :16:12. | :16:19.
champion. This is because of his past criminal convictions. I was | :16:19. | :16:26.
gutted. It is a massive chance for me. To fight him in his own back | :16:26. | :16:34.
yard, boxing is all about the chances. I am gutted it that I | :16:34. | :16:40.
cannot get to the fight. He has lost his chance because of nasty | :16:40. | :16:43.
fight outside the ring minus four spells in prison when he was | :16:43. | :16:48.
younger have come back to haunt him. Just fighting, and being a young | :16:48. | :16:54.
kid on the street, it was my own fault. I am not disappointed with | :16:55. | :16:59.
anyone or anything other than myself. He has put his past behind | :16:59. | :17:04.
him and has credited boxing with helping him to it. He is accredited | :17:04. | :17:13.
youth worker now and a family man. In seems like a lifetime ago, to be | :17:13. | :17:17.
honest. I never had these children then, they have turned my life | :17:17. | :17:22.
around. He is hoping that change will be enough to persuade the | :17:22. | :17:26.
American authorities to allow him to continue his career across the | :17:26. | :17:31.
Atlantic. For now however, he must keep training and hope for a fight | :17:31. | :17:41.
:17:41. | :17:42. | ||
closer to home. That is it for the sport now. Thank | :17:42. | :17:49.
you very much. The weekend weather with Dianne in | :17:50. | :17:53.
a moment - as well as JLS here in the studio. But first, all this | :17:53. | :17:56.
week we've been bringing you a musical look at life in Hattersley | :17:56. | :17:59.
- through the eyes of the local residents. Our final feature | :17:59. | :18:08.
focuses on the battle to keep the residents' centre going. The | :18:08. | :18:13.
community centre opened in the late 1960s and has always been that the | :18:13. | :18:19.
beating heart of our community. We heard in 2007 that the local | :18:19. | :18:22.
council had decided that the building was beginning to show its | :18:22. | :18:27.
age and had become too expensive to run. They decided to knock it down | :18:27. | :18:33.
and replace it with a privately run building on the edge of the estate. | :18:33. | :18:36.
We planned to move into the building in autumn this year but | :18:36. | :18:40.
are still waiting for details about how much residents and local groups | :18:40. | :18:50.
:18:50. | :19:06. | ||
will have to pay to use the new facilities. # Going to miss this | :19:06. | :19:15.
place when they close the doors, And the musical theme continues. | :19:15. | :19:25.
:19:25. | :19:57. | ||
With every blink another memory... # It's so much more than just a | :19:57. | :20:07.
:20:07. | :20:10. | ||
building. # It's a collection of our lives. # The sum of years and | :20:10. | :20:20.
:20:20. | :20:32. | ||
friendship. # I hope it's heart will survive. # Everything moves on | :20:32. | :20:41.
and bricks and mortar crumble. # Don't be scared of change, we'll | :20:41. | :20:51.
:20:51. | :20:53. | ||
make things work. # We'll start again. # People here are strong, we | :20:53. | :21:03.
:21:03. | :21:40. | ||
carry on. # But we'll miss this The shutter has come down on our | :21:40. | :21:44.
seas from Hattersley. At least the equipment work that time. From | :21:44. | :21:54.
:21:54. | :21:58. | ||
They are, you may know, JLS - one of Britain's biggest selling bands. | :21:58. | :22:01.
Right now they're getting ready to take to the stage at the Manchester | :22:01. | :22:05.
Arena for the first of three dates in the city. It's been a busy few | :22:05. | :22:09.
months for the boys - who shot to fame as runners-up on X-Factor in | :22:09. | :22:12.
2008. But they popped-in to see us earlier - to tell us how they're | :22:12. | :22:22.
feeling ahead of tonight's gig. Very excited - Manchester is always | :22:22. | :22:29.
a good crowd. For as, building up to the big gigs, it is a massive | :22:29. | :22:35.
achievement. Thousands of people. You have just done London, which is | :22:35. | :22:38.
huge, day notice the difference when you play in different parts of | :22:38. | :22:47.
the country? Definitely. We used to think he was quieter in London, but | :22:47. | :22:53.
its Even in Manchester, you do not get the noise they get hear | :22:53. | :23:03.
:23:03. | :23:03. | ||
anywhere else. In terms of planning as well, how the fans will get here. | :23:03. | :23:10.
They will try to get on the tour bus. They will get to the hotel. | :23:10. | :23:20.
:23:20. | :23:30. | ||
Normally, we run out the back, but they're just there. You had been so | :23:30. | :23:36.
busy, this is your third album and she did Sport Relief, what was that | :23:36. | :23:43.
like? Fantastic. Sport Relief is an amazing charity. We went to Uganda | :23:43. | :23:49.
last year to see how the money raised is saving lives in Africa. | :23:49. | :23:58.
Also in the UK as well. That is why we want to set up our own charity. | :23:58. | :24:04.
We want to help where we can. We know we are in a place of power and | :24:04. | :24:09.
influence and want to use that in a positive way. You have a couple of | :24:09. | :24:14.
days in Manchester and then another one on 20th April, he had just | :24:14. | :24:18.
centenier tickets for that? We have just released seats so if people | :24:19. | :24:24.
want to come to that, we will be glad to see them. Have you had any | :24:24. | :24:34.
:24:34. | :24:35. | ||
strange requests? We have a concoction of... Stop there. | :24:35. | :24:44.
Something we have before we go on his loads of fresh garlic. That is | :24:44. | :24:49.
not very rock and roll! It is like having a short but is really | :24:49. | :24:59.
:24:59. | :25:02. | ||
healthy. So the fans get a shock when you come out! Lucky there is a | :25:02. | :25:07.
big distance between us and the fans. It is great to see you, best | :25:07. | :25:14.
of luck for the dates in Manchester. Thank you very much. | :25:14. | :25:23.
They were very nice let me tell you, they spread a little sunshine. Can | :25:23. | :25:30.
you do the same? I cannot. You have had to sunshine for this week. Good | :25:30. | :25:34.
evening. The weekend looks much evening. The weekend looks much | :25:34. | :25:41.
cloudier and we will see some rain eventually a we have a weather | :25:41. | :25:47.
front coming in tomorrow. Drizzly rain overnight. The choir happens | :25:47. | :25:53.
as we start next week, the working week will bring a change. -- look | :25:53. | :25:59.
what happens. Some real rain coming in next week. The cloud broke today | :25:59. | :26:03.
on the Isle of Man and Cumbria but everywhere else struggled with | :26:03. | :26:10.
cloud cover. Through the night it pushes in everywhere. It does keep | :26:10. | :26:20.
:26:20. | :26:23. | ||
the temperatures up, there could be hill fog however. He could catch | :26:23. | :26:28.
some rain drifting through Merseyside but it is not a big deal. | :26:28. | :26:32.
The cloud cover will be constant tomorrow morning and some drizzle | :26:32. | :26:39.
on high-ground, but that will die out mid-morning. Fingers crossed, | :26:39. | :26:44.
we should see an improvement in the weather. The cloud cover will | :26:44. | :26:49.
trying break in the afternoon. You'll start to see things are | :26:49. | :26:56.
improving. The wind changes direction towards the north eastern. | :26:56. | :27:00.
An improvement from warning through to the after an end. Temperatures | :27:00. | :27:06.
will be in a form. We have wall-to- wall sunshine earlier in the week | :27:06. | :27:10.
with temperatures of 21 but tomorrow we're back to 12 degrees - | :27:10. | :27:13.
tomorrow we're back to 12 degrees - much more realistic. I have next | :27:13. | :27:22.
week off as well. You should plan ahead. Can apologise for the | :27:22. | :27:27. |
