Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight. Our top story: under | :00:06. | :00:12.
attack, an alarming increase in assaults on ambulance crews Proms a | :00:12. | :00:16.
call for better protection. Some now say they want body armour. | :00:16. | :00:22.
Also tonight: farewell to Jack, a town pays tribute to a soldier's | :00:22. | :00:28.
sacrifice. Jack disliked the terms hero and brave. He would say he was | :00:28. | :00:33.
just doing his job. A royal day on the Isle of Man with a little | :00:33. | :00:41.
confusion over who is who. Who is going to be with her? Who is her? | :00:41. | :00:50.
Prince charming. And 40 years since they formed, | :00:50. | :01:00.
:01:00. | :01:07. | ||
It is a bewildering but growing problem, the number of assaults on | :01:07. | :01:11.
ambulance staff in the north-west has gone up by more than half. In | :01:11. | :01:17.
the Fylde area alone, there were five attacks just last weekend. The | :01:17. | :01:20.
attackers who were often drunk damaged ambulance equipment and one | :01:21. | :01:26.
union says it may now be time to consider body armour for paramedics. | :01:26. | :01:29.
They go out to help and end up on the receiving end of nasty | :01:29. | :01:35.
behaviour? They do. It is extraordinary. The problem of | :01:35. | :01:39.
assaults on ambulance staff is one that is getting worse. For the last | :01:39. | :01:44.
year there were at 268 Physical and verbal attacks on paramedics in the | :01:44. | :01:49.
north-west. That is more than 50% up on the previous year. Abbas | :01:49. | :01:53.
bosses say the results are so routine that some crews do not even | :01:53. | :02:00.
report them -- ambulance bosses. is unbelievable that people would | :02:00. | :02:03.
assault staff while they are carrying out their duties. They | :02:03. | :02:06.
should not have to be looking after their -- looking over their | :02:06. | :02:12.
shoulders. We do risk assessments but they should be able to get on | :02:12. | :02:20.
with their job without fear. didn't staff in Blackpool have seen | :02:20. | :02:24.
a shocking number of assaults recently -- ambulance staff. There | :02:24. | :02:30.
were five on the weekend just gone. The ambulance service says it will | :02:30. | :02:35.
take anyone who attacks its workers to court. Last year 68 people who | :02:35. | :02:40.
attacked paramedics were prosecuted and some were sent to prison. Often | :02:40. | :02:44.
the people carrying out the attacks were drunk but not always. Managers | :02:44. | :02:48.
think education is the way to tackle the problem. We need to show | :02:48. | :02:54.
a bit of respect. They are coming to help people. They want to do the | :02:54. | :02:59.
best for the patient. We need to make them understand the | :02:59. | :03:02.
consequences of assaulting the group which could lead to the | :03:02. | :03:08.
number of -- the crew being off work. The ambulance service can | :03:08. | :03:13.
flag addresses where they have had problems before. The Association of | :03:13. | :03:15.
Professional Ambulance Personnel says staff may need protection | :03:15. | :03:18.
might body armour. That is not something that all paramedics would | :03:18. | :03:26.
welcome. In other news, a man has appeared | :03:26. | :03:29.
in court charged with the murder of a two-year-old boy in Bolton. Rio | :03:29. | :03:34.
Smedley died in hospital on Sunday. A postmortem showed he had severe | :03:34. | :03:39.
abdominal injuries. 22-year-old Daniel Rigby has been remanded in | :03:39. | :03:44.
custody. 13 people have been arrested | :03:44. | :03:49.
following a series of police raids across Merseyside targeting gun and | :03:49. | :03:53.
gang crimes. Officers went to 15 properties in Croxteth, Norris | :03:53. | :03:57.
Green and Kirkby. Seven guns as well as drugs have already been | :03:57. | :03:59.
seized as part of an ongoing operation. | :03:59. | :04:03.
An inquest has heard how an instructor died and a schoolboy had | :04:03. | :04:08.
to be resuscitated after a canoeing accident near Ullswater. Grant | :04:08. | :04:15.
Kinney was in a canoe with a 14- year-old people when they capsized. | :04:15. | :04:18.
The inquest recorded a verdict of accidental death. | :04:18. | :04:22.
He was a consummate professional soldier who died after just doing | :04:22. | :04:27.
his job in Afghanistan. Those are the words mourners heard today at | :04:27. | :04:31.
the funeral of Corporal Jack Stanley. The 26-year-old was | :04:31. | :04:36.
seriously injured in a bomb blast in February. He went to hospital in | :04:36. | :04:40.
Birmingham but died earlier this month. | :04:40. | :04:45.
In the pouring rain mourners gathered outside the church in a | :04:45. | :04:51.
little Deraa. It was the rain that help some wipe away their tears. As | :04:51. | :04:54.
Corporal Jack Stanley's funeral cortege arrived for the funeral. | :04:54. | :04:58.
There were hundreds of people wanting to pay their respects. Some | :04:58. | :05:03.
wore the colours of his favourite football team, Bolton Wanderers. | :05:03. | :05:07.
The 26-year-old was injured in a bomb blast in February but died two | :05:07. | :05:13.
months later in Birmingham. His family were by his side. His | :05:13. | :05:16.
officer commanding read a statement on their behalf today. It will be | :05:17. | :05:20.
remembered and cherished by those who knew him in our own way and our | :05:20. | :05:25.
own time. Jack disliked the terms hero and brave. He would say he was | :05:25. | :05:31.
just doing my job. The sentiment is echoed by it injured soldiers who | :05:31. | :05:34.
now face a life with disabilities both mental and physical. Before | :05:34. | :05:39.
his death the commander for the Queen's while guards had defied | :05:39. | :05:43.
medical experts to regain consciousness. During the service | :05:43. | :05:49.
he was described as an outstanding soldier and many junior soldiers | :05:49. | :05:54.
aspire to be like him. He also had a cheeky smile and made people | :05:54. | :05:59.
around him laugh. The congregation were also thank for their support. | :05:59. | :06:03.
The military are held in high regard here, not just in | :06:03. | :06:07.
remembrance of those who have died in previous wars but obviously Jack | :06:07. | :06:15.
and others who have made it plain that the sacrifice still goes on. | :06:15. | :06:19.
private service followed the funeral. His family have asked for | :06:19. | :06:25.
donations to be paid for a charity raising money for injured soldiers. | :06:25. | :06:30.
They will be continuing their own money-raising efforts in a charity | :06:31. | :06:37.
match this weekend. On the Isle of Man it has been | :06:37. | :06:41.
quite a day. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have | :06:41. | :06:44.
been there to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It is the first | :06:44. | :06:49.
time the couple have visited the island together. Allah chief | :06:49. | :06:52.
reporter was there. They knew they were here to welcome | :06:52. | :06:57.
some very important visitors but did they know exactly who those | :06:57. | :07:05.
visitors wire? Who is going to be with her? Prince charming. Prince | :07:05. | :07:11.
charming?! Dave Prins certainly proved himself charming with the | :07:11. | :07:15.
children as did his wife -- the Prince has certainly proved himself. | :07:15. | :07:20.
They were visiting as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour. Members of | :07:20. | :07:26.
the Royal Family will be travelling to all of the Commonwealth realms, | :07:27. | :07:32.
and British overseas territories during the jubilee year. We shook | :07:32. | :07:39.
his hand. We will not be able to see him again. I am never going to | :07:39. | :07:46.
wash my hand! Their first stop was the island's National Sports Centre. | :07:46. | :07:50.
This place has produced some world- class cyclists. It is great that | :07:50. | :07:55.
they are coming to see the good work being done here. It is a great | :07:55. | :07:58.
honour the fact that they are coming to the small island and | :07:58. | :08:08.
coming to a lot of places. Those places included visiting this crowd | :08:08. | :08:13.
despite the worsening weather. The couple were particularly taken by | :08:13. | :08:22.
this sheet. He thought it was quite nice. -- this sheep. We are going | :08:22. | :08:27.
to send him some. This is reversed visited the island of the Duchess. | :08:27. | :08:32.
Prince Charles has not been here since 2000. It will be a day to | :08:32. | :08:37.
remember far everyone and not just because of the weather. | :08:37. | :08:40.
They could not have had a worse day for it! | :08:41. | :08:45.
It is always a thrill. When we had her Majesty here in the building, | :08:46. | :08:53.
everybody was with their nose up against the window. | :08:53. | :08:57.
The people of Salford will be voting in the city's first ever | :08:57. | :09:02.
election far a mayor a week today. Salford and Liverpool will become | :09:02. | :09:06.
the first cities in the north-west to have elected leaders. Who should | :09:06. | :09:16.
:09:16. | :09:17. | ||
get the job? BBC Radio Manchester is holding a debate this evening. | :09:17. | :09:22.
Thank you. This is the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra's studio and | :09:22. | :09:28.
it promises to be quite a show. We have got a number of the voters who | :09:28. | :09:33.
will be making a decision in this election as well as nine of the 10 | :09:33. | :09:37.
candidates. Labour has decided not to turn up because they do not want | :09:37. | :09:44.
to share a platform with the British National Party. For the | :09:44. | :09:50.
first time, Salford gets the chance to vote for its leader of the | :09:50. | :09:54.
council, its new city mayor. I have been looking at the ways in which | :09:54. | :09:59.
that person could change the image of the city. A city's name projects | :09:59. | :10:04.
and identity. For many, Salford still means terraced housing, | :10:04. | :10:09.
poverty and crime. One old church has seen the city around it changed. | :10:09. | :10:13.
When I first moved here, there were a lot of disadvantaged young people | :10:13. | :10:18.
and a lot of crime. There are still some problems as they are in any | :10:19. | :10:25.
city. But the problems are a lot less. Even fewer problems in this | :10:25. | :10:32.
neighbourhood far from the inner city. A Meyer should be able to | :10:32. | :10:37.
help with initiatives to bring together the community -- a mayor. | :10:37. | :10:42.
I am talking about businesses, the BBC as well as local people. | :10:42. | :10:46.
Looking around Salford Quays and perhaps you can spot the city's | :10:46. | :10:50.
future. One of those instrumental in the regeneration says an elected | :10:50. | :10:55.
mayor is not going to help. What we need in Salford as in many parts of | :10:55. | :10:59.
the North of England is sustained investment to change the reality of | :10:59. | :11:04.
people's lives, changed the skill base, improve housing, improve the | :11:04. | :11:08.
environment. One new figurehead with no new powers and resources is | :11:08. | :11:13.
not going to do that. When riots broke out last year, some felt a | :11:13. | :11:17.
figurehead was exactly what the City needed. Last summer's riots, | :11:17. | :11:23.
it would have given the media, the public, somebody to go to as the | :11:23. | :11:28.
accountable person to talk to and for Salford. 10 people want the | :11:28. | :11:32.
high-profile role. That is 10 different ways to shape the image | :11:32. | :11:37.
of Salford. I am pretty sure that the image of the city is one of | :11:37. | :11:41.
those issues that will come up today. I should say that there is a | :11:41. | :11:44.
full list of candidates who are standing in the election bomb mayor | :11:44. | :11:52.
of Salford on the website. -- in the election for mayor. The debate | :11:52. | :11:59.
on the radio starts at 7pm. It will be a very different kind of | :11:59. | :12:04.
production to what normally comes out of the studio. | :12:04. | :12:11.
Thank you very much. Still to come: when in Rome, drive | :12:11. | :12:16.
like they do in Rochdale. The cars made here with an Italian job in | :12:16. | :12:20.
mind. And an Olympic hopeful drops into | :12:20. | :12:26.
Manchester. How many days is it to go? How many days is it to the | :12:26. | :12:33.
game's? I know it was 100 days... thought you would know off the top | :12:33. | :12:40.
of your head. I am just focusing on my training. | :12:40. | :12:44.
After all the bleak economic news, something brighter to report. Quite | :12:44. | :12:49.
literally. A Lancashire business has won a Queen's Award for Export | :12:49. | :12:53.
after lighting some of the world's most famous modern buildings. Using | :12:53. | :12:58.
state-of-the-art technology designers at ACDC have used special | :12:58. | :13:05.
low energy techniques to bring the structures to live. | :13:05. | :13:11.
-- to bring the structures to live. From the world's tallest tower in | :13:11. | :13:15.
Dubai to Regent Street in London. Modern lighting is much more than | :13:15. | :13:24.
purely functional. The designs are created here. This is the lies that | :13:24. | :13:31.
are in Kew Gardens in London. You have l e d fixtures mounted between | :13:31. | :13:36.
bronze. It brings to the bridge to life in the evening. For today's | :13:36. | :13:41.
architects, lighting is part of the design, creating a mood, a better | :13:41. | :13:45.
place to work or simply an eye- catching statement. This is the | :13:45. | :13:50.
traditional method of making lighting. Gases are ignited within | :13:50. | :13:58.
a glass of two. The future is bright, this time it is LED. Modern | :13:58. | :14:02.
lighting uses the faction of the energy it used to. LED lights go on | :14:02. | :14:06.
for years. The bobbing more creative with lighting, | :14:06. | :14:11.
particularly now as new light sources become available. We have | :14:11. | :14:14.
got energy efficiency and people are more willing to use the light | :14:14. | :14:19.
source and look at different ways you can use it within a space. | :14:19. | :14:22.
Queen's Award for Export is for enterprise within international | :14:22. | :14:32.

trade. The firm has grown by 90% A great achievement. Don't you love | :14:34. | :14:42.
the city by night to? Now, what sort of car to drive? Something | :14:42. | :14:47.
stylish and eye-catching? It is the kind of car you might see at the | :14:47. | :14:52.
Jet Set European resort. But while the athletes gathered in Rome to | :14:52. | :14:57.
compete, the cars rolled off the production line in Rochdale. | :14:57. | :15:01.
Enthusiasts are trying to gather as many Rochdale Olympics as they can | :15:01. | :15:11.
:15:11. | :15:17. | ||
to celebrate the Olympic torch's Forget the Ferrari, put aside the | :15:17. | :15:23.
Porsche. The north-west once had its own brand -- band of sports car, | :15:23. | :15:33.

the Rochdale. It was in a disused cotton mill. In 1960, the company | :15:34. | :15:38.
decided to mark the Rome Olympics with the new model of kit car that | :15:38. | :15:42.
if -- that enthusiasts could assemble at home. It might be a | :15:42. | :15:46.
long way from Italy, but this town was proud of the Rochdale Olympic. | :15:46. | :15:52.
It was so well-engineered. It was just a big lump of plastic, like | :15:52. | :15:58.
formal racing cars are these days. Around 400 had been made by the | :15:58. | :16:03.
time production ended in the 1970s. Now many of those are set to the | :16:03. | :16:12.

it back into the public eye. happens all the time. People come | :16:25. | :16:33.
up and ask you, nice car, it looks like a little Jaguar! Nice | :16:33. | :16:43.

colourful stop what is it? And I go, it is a Rochdale Olympic. He did | :16:44. | :16:48.
Rochdale pass through the town on Saturday 23rd June. -- the Rochdale | :16:48. | :16:57.

Now, she is the place to go up this year's Olympics. She is just as | :17:02. | :17:11.
likely to appear in the fashion pages as the sports section. | :17:11. | :17:15.
Jessica is one of our great hopes for a medal in three months' time, | :17:15. | :17:18.
but today she met a group of teenage athlete hoping to become | :17:18. | :17:24.
the Olympic stars of feature. Jessica Ennis has this effect on | :17:24. | :17:28.
people, stopping shoppers in their tracks at the Manchester Arndale | :17:28. | :17:33.
this morning. She was there to promote the great City Games, an | :17:33. | :17:37.
event next month which will be her final competition before the | :17:37. | :17:42.
Olympics. How many days is that until the Games? I know it was a | :17:42. | :17:45.
hundred days to go... I thought you would know off the top of your | :17:45. | :17:51.
head! I'm just focusing on my training. Everyone is exciting -- | :17:51. | :17:57.
excited about counting down the numbers. For those of you who don't | :17:57. | :18:01.
know much about athletics, Jessica Ennis is a heptathlete. That means | :18:01. | :18:05.
she has to perform well in seven track and field events to win a | :18:05. | :18:10.
medal, and the signs are, she is going to do just that. She is known | :18:10. | :18:15.
beyond athletics. One newspaper offered tips this week on how to | :18:15. | :18:18.
have a stomach like hers. You probably have to follow at a | :18:18. | :18:24.
punishing training regime for six hours a day like her. It was an | :18:24. | :18:29.
inspirational meeting today. She is a very dedicated athlete. She goes | :18:29. | :18:32.
back to the drawing board when things go wrong and trains 10 times | :18:32. | :18:39.
harder. It is not just about Lord Cullen. Just to get suffered an | :18:39. | :18:43.
injury to her for it, forcing had of the Olympics. But thanks to her | :18:44. | :18:48.
determination, she has bounced back and she can't see beyond 2012. | :18:48. | :18:53.
really focusing on this year, but definitely, next it to the bar | :18:53. | :18:57.
championships again which I'm preparing for. It is very hard at | :18:57. | :19:07.
:19:07. | :19:07. | ||
the moment because it is such a big thing. Jessica Ennis will be back | :19:07. | :19:15.
for those Great City Games on May 20th. A bit of football news for | :19:15. | :19:23.
you. Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United are in a better | :19:23. | :19:25.
position to win the title than local rivals Manchester City as | :19:26. | :19:28.
both sides prepare for Monday's derby, which is built as a | :19:28. | :19:31.
potential title-decider. United's manager says his side can afford to | :19:31. | :19:34.
draw the game while City must win the match to have a realistic | :19:34. | :19:37.
chance of becoming Premier League Champions. He also told the press | :19:37. | :19:39.
conference that, in terms of trophy - trophies, the battle between | :19:40. | :19:42.
United and City now surpasses the rivalry between United and | :19:42. | :19:44.
Liverpool. If we're going to be contesting for titles, which I | :19:44. | :19:47.
think we will be doing, it will become just as important as the | :19:47. | :19:49.
Liverpool game. Maybe not in terms of the motion, because the | :19:49. | :19:52.
Liverpool United games are emotional, but in terms of | :19:52. | :20:02.
:20:02. | :20:07. | ||
importance, it is. -- in terms of emotion. And some bad news for | :20:07. | :20:10.
Liverpool fans. Charlie Adams - Charlie Adam has been ruled out of | :20:10. | :20:13.
the FA Cup Final at Wembley against Chelsea in nine days' time. He'll | :20:14. | :20:16.
miss the rest of the season with strained knee ligaments. Cricket, | :20:16. | :20:19.
and defending County Champions Lancashire have had a good opening | :20:19. | :20:21.
day against Somerset, with Steven Croft hitting a century. Lancashire | :20:21. | :20:24.
are something big for something small with Croft now on something | :20:24. | :20:33.
large not out. The Red Rose lost their first two matches of the | :20:33. | :20:36.
season and are looking to bounce back at Taunton. | :20:36. | :20:39.
They were the biggest band of their day, Manchester based, all four | :20:39. | :20:41.
members brilliant writers, singers and musicians. Mention 10cc to | :20:41. | :20:44.
people today and they still evoke vivid images and sounds from the | :20:44. | :20:54.
:20:54. | :20:59. | ||
1970s. Do you remember them? They did some great songs. A new 10cc | :20:59. | :21:01.
tour is about to get underway with performances at the Bridgewater | :21:01. | :21:04.
Hall and in Liverpool. Earlier I spoke to original member Graham | :21:04. | :21:07.
Gouldman and asked him whether people were right to call them the | :21:07. | :21:11.
Take That of the 70s. I don't know about Take That, that is very nice | :21:11. | :21:16.
of you to say that! What was it like back in those days? You ruled | :21:16. | :21:21.
the airwaves. I suppose we did. A lot of bands go through periods | :21:21. | :21:28.
when they can do no wrong because they do it right. There was a | :21:28. | :21:34.
wonderful period during the early 70s when it was there for a bus -- | :21:34. | :21:44.
:21:44. | :21:49. | ||
when it was the four of us. We were like a gang, a team, it was us | :21:49. | :21:53.
against the world. We were having a great time, we had our own studio. | :21:53. | :22:00.
We all wrote and produced, we all sang, we all played. We were a | :22:00. | :22:07.
self-contained unit. And the idea is that big pop stars go off to LA, | :22:07. | :22:13.
you guys were in Stockport the whole time. I think you can create | :22:13. | :22:20.
dramatic anywhere. What impact of that have, staying in the north- | :22:20. | :22:24.
west to record the biggest hits? think it had a big effect on the | :22:24. | :22:27.
music scene in the north, mainly because of the fact that we had | :22:28. | :22:35.
strawberry studios in Stockport. It was as good or better than any | :22:35. | :22:45.
:22:45. | :22:49. | ||
other studio in the country. are reforming and doing loads of | :22:49. | :22:59.
:22:59. | :23:10. | ||
shows. Yes, you can definitely feel the rebel. -- ripple. You can feel | :23:10. | :23:20.
:23:20. | :23:28. | ||
people going, ah. We will hear more from you later on in the programme. | :23:28. | :23:30.
The special performance will be playing out of the programme with | :23:30. | :23:39.
their performance later. He gets very excited on stage, he says. | :23:39. | :23:44.
Let's take a look at the weather. Guess who is back! Good evening. | :23:44. | :23:48.
I'm back and I haven't bought anything good for you. You weather | :23:48. | :23:52.
does not change through the next three days. In Scotland, it will be | :23:52. | :23:57.
bright, in the south of England, it will be warm. It is going to be | :23:57. | :24:03.
really quite wet. Not as wet as it has been today, it has been about | :24:03. | :24:10.
this area of low pressure. There will be some more rain in now | :24:10. | :24:13.
forecast. Showers through the day- to-day have been belting. The Met | :24:13. | :24:17.
Office is warning that they will continue for a time tonight. We're | :24:17. | :24:24.
not out of the woods yet. The rain was very lively and active today. | :24:24. | :24:30.
We had some thunder and hail as well. We don't have any flood | :24:30. | :24:36.
alerts, but when this rain comes through in the night, they could be | :24:36. | :24:46.
:24:46. | :24:48. | ||
some localised flooding. It will be lighter than it has been. | :24:48. | :24:57.
Temperatures 6-seven degrees for most of us. Things will be better | :24:57. | :25:02.
for the Isle of Man and parts of Cumbria. This weather in the south- | :25:02. | :25:10.
west to move away but does not do so successfully. So you come back | :25:10. | :25:17. |
