Good evening. Welcome to NorthWest Tonight. Our top story. | :00:00. | :00:18.
Ten years on from the cockling tragedy in Morecambe Bay, we speak | :00:19. | :00:23.
to the only survivor. I tried to swim through the channel. I thought, | :00:24. | :00:28.
am I going to die? 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned after being trapped | :00:29. | :00:36.
by the tides. Also tonight: Could Blackpool become the first place to | :00:37. | :00:39.
ban alcohol sales in the early hours. | :00:40. | :00:42.
Sixty days of sharks and storms ` the Bolton boys who survived their | :00:43. | :00:49.
Atlantic challenge. Hold on tight as we take you to new | :00:50. | :00:54.
heights in the Lake District. And we are live on stage at the magister | :00:55. | :01:00.
arena where 7000 children prepare for a performance. | :01:01. | :01:08.
Everyone here had heard the stories about Morecambe Bay. Tides quicker | :01:09. | :01:14.
than a running horse. Quicksands and channels to claim the unwary. But in | :01:15. | :01:18.
February 2004, the world became aware of its truly lethal danger. | :01:19. | :01:24.
That was when 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned after being trapped | :01:25. | :01:29.
by the tides. This week marks the 10th anniversary of that disaster. | :01:30. | :01:33.
With the first of three special reports into the cockle tragedy | :01:34. | :01:40.
here's Peter Marshall. Well these are images forever etched | :01:41. | :01:44.
on the minds of anyone who was at the scene of that developing tragedy | :01:45. | :01:48.
on the 5th of February, 2004. The sands of Morecambe bay had been the | :01:49. | :01:52.
epicentre of a rush for valuable cockles. But the human cost would | :01:53. | :01:56.
prove immeasurable. 23 people ` Chinese illegal immigrants with | :01:57. | :01:59.
families back home ` washed to their deaths. Only one man would be pulled | :02:00. | :02:04.
alive from the waters that night ` his story a potent reminder of the | :02:05. | :02:12.
bay's ever`present danger. Morecambe Bay ` both beautiful and | :02:13. | :02:14.
brutal. We have visual with one person only, | :02:15. | :02:49.
on a sandbank. Ten years have passed but time is not diminished the | :02:50. | :02:51.
painful memories of one who survived. | :02:52. | :02:57.
TRANSLATION: I tried to swim through the channel, | :02:58. | :03:01.
but I couldn't do it. I thought Obama parents. I wondered, am I | :03:02. | :03:05.
going to die? Li Hua was the only person rescued | :03:06. | :03:09.
alive from the waters that night. He now lives under witness protection | :03:10. | :03:15.
with a new identity. He gave evidence in the trial. He was very | :03:16. | :03:23.
nearly the 24th victim. When did you realise you were in great danger? | :03:24. | :03:28.
TRANSLATION: It was when the water covered the | :03:29. | :03:34.
wheel. Everyone was panicking. We try to swim but the water was | :03:35. | :03:38.
flowing so quickly, some were dragged under it straightaway. I was | :03:39. | :03:45.
in despair. I thought, am I going to die tonight. I thought about my | :03:46. | :03:53.
parents and my wife and my child. I just couldn't understand why God | :03:54. | :04:02.
would do this to me. He stripped off his waterproofs, struggled and | :04:03. | :04:07.
stumbled in the darkness. I thought I might just as well wait to die. | :04:08. | :04:14.
Then, I don't know how, wave may be turned me around, I was on my own | :04:15. | :04:18.
and in Sharrow `` was in shallow water. I kept praying and praying. I | :04:19. | :04:30.
kept waving. They did not seem to see me. But then, they stopped. Li | :04:31. | :04:40.
Hua has rebuilt his life together with the wife and son he feared he | :04:41. | :04:46.
would never see again. My family are all healthy and we are happy. I have | :04:47. | :04:53.
a job. We don't have a lot of money, but we are happy to go through each | :04:54. | :04:59.
day peacefully. I am very grateful to the police and the British | :05:00. | :05:07.
authorities. I am glad to be alive. The words there of Li Hua, spoken | :05:08. | :05:10.
through an interpreter. Tomorrow we'll hear from those who took part | :05:11. | :05:14.
in the huge search operation and from the detectives faced with | :05:15. | :05:20.
unravelling just who was to blame. And the full story on tonight's | :05:21. | :05:24.
Inside Out North West on BBC One at 7:30pm. | :05:25. | :05:30.
A mother has appeared in court charged with murdering her | :05:31. | :05:32.
seven`week`old son in Oldham. Katarzyna Gacek is accused of | :05:33. | :05:36.
killing her son Thomas last week. She is also accused of assault or | :05:37. | :05:40.
ill`treatment of a child. The 24`year`old was remanded in custody | :05:41. | :05:44.
to appear before Crown Court. Two men, aged 35 and 26, also appeared | :05:45. | :05:57.
charged with child neglect. Survivors of the Hillsborough | :05:58. | :06:01.
disaster say they were intimidated by police from the independent force | :06:02. | :06:07.
asked to investigate the disaster. According to an investigation by | :06:08. | :06:10.
Newsnight, fans have come forward to ask our West Midlands Police took | :06:11. | :06:21.
their statements. A clean`up operation is under way on | :06:22. | :06:25.
the Isle of Man as high tides and strong winds lead to more flooding | :06:26. | :06:28.
in coastal areas today. Numerous roads, including Douglas Promenade, | :06:29. | :06:31.
that you can see here, were closed for most of the afternoon to keep | :06:32. | :06:34.
traffic and pedestrians away. Jurors in the William Roache trial | :06:35. | :06:38.
have been told to leave emotion out of their decision making. The trial | :06:39. | :06:41.
judge made the comments while summing up the evidence in the | :06:42. | :06:46.
actor's trial. Our chief reporter Dave Guest is at | :06:47. | :06:51.
Preston Crown Court. You have been there most days of the trial, the | :06:52. | :06:56.
time is almost here for the jury to retire and consider its verdict | :06:57. | :07:02.
Yes, that was the message to the jury from the judge. He told them | :07:03. | :07:08.
they would be hearing no further evidence and the time would soon | :07:09. | :07:11.
come when they would have to assess and examine the evidence that they | :07:12. | :07:15.
have heard during the three weeks of the trial. They would have to sit | :07:16. | :07:18.
down and decide what they believed in what they didn't. And who they | :07:19. | :07:25.
did not believe. William Roach arrived at court | :07:26. | :07:29.
knowing that his trial is entering the final stages. Five women accused | :07:30. | :07:35.
the actor of molesting them as teenagers in the 1980s. He denies | :07:36. | :07:39.
it. That, says the judge, is at the heart of this case. He told the jury | :07:40. | :07:44.
there is a conflict of evidence which they must resolve. He added, | :07:45. | :07:50.
you must assess the witnesses, bringing together your experience, | :07:51. | :07:53.
knowledge of the world and common sense. You must decide whether you | :07:54. | :07:59.
accept all, some, or none of what witnesses say. The judge said the | :08:00. | :08:02.
case have probably aroused emotions but emotions had no place in the | :08:03. | :08:08.
decision`making process. He pointed out that the prosecution had to | :08:09. | :08:12.
prove guilt, not for the defendant to prove his innocence. He added | :08:13. | :08:17.
that if they were sure he was guilty, the verdict must be guilty. | :08:18. | :08:21.
If they were not sure, the verdict must be not guilty. So, tomorrow | :08:22. | :08:26.
morning, the judge will continue with the final part of his summing | :08:27. | :08:31.
up. He said he expects to send out the jury to consider their verdict | :08:32. | :08:39.
in the afternoon. He denies four charges of indecent assault and two | :08:40. | :08:44.
charges of rape. Cumbria's former Chief Constable has | :08:45. | :08:47.
broken his silence about his yearlong suspension from the force | :08:48. | :08:49.
following allegations of misconduct. Stuart Hyde was cleared of all | :08:50. | :08:52.
charges, but in an exclusive interview on tonight's Inside Out on | :08:53. | :08:59.
BBC One, he says he's not satisfied. It does not feel like a fair process | :09:00. | :09:05.
at all. It feels like a one`sided view. People that made allegations, | :09:06. | :09:11.
their allegations have been treated as correct without any opportunity | :09:12. | :09:15.
for me to address them. Next tonight, Blackpool could | :09:16. | :09:17.
restrict opening hours and roll back 24 hour drinking if an application | :09:18. | :09:20.
by Lancashire Police is successful The force has applied for an EMRO ` | :09:21. | :09:24.
an Early Morning Restriction Order ` that would ban the sale of Alcohol | :09:25. | :09:35.
at certain times. This is how the night ends for some | :09:36. | :09:39.
` the result of too much alcohol ` so is the answer to ban its sale in | :09:40. | :09:44.
the early hours? Today Blackpool Council's licensing committee heard | :09:45. | :09:46.
an application from Lancashire Police for an EMRO ` Early Morning | :09:47. | :09:49.
Restriction Order. This B owner gave evidence and is in favour. The | :09:50. | :10:00.
weekend is a nightmare. It is full drinking after three o'clock that | :10:01. | :10:05.
now continues. There are swarms of people, anti`social elements. The | :10:06. | :10:14.
order would prevent alcohol sale between three and 6am ` although | :10:15. | :10:20.
opening hours would not change. 22 out of the town's 1377 licensees | :10:21. | :10:27.
would be affected. The police say that the area would `` where would | :10:28. | :10:35.
apply accounts for 35% of all violent crime in Blackpool. | :10:36. | :10:39.
Lancashire Police say it is not about punishing individual | :10:40. | :10:41.
businesses. It is an attempt to `` to address an imbalance. Reducing | :10:42. | :10:51.
opening hours was recently trialled in St Helens where incidents far by | :10:52. | :10:59.
72%. They used to be a doorman at one of the nightclubs, so I can see | :11:00. | :11:05.
the benefits. I am happy for them to do everything they can. Back in | :11:06. | :11:12.
Blackpool, the owner of the biggest nightclub is one of the strongest | :11:13. | :11:15.
opponents. We have to compete with other places and we compete by | :11:16. | :11:21.
having great facilities. We do not want to be disadvantaged by having | :11:22. | :11:26.
to close early. The early `` the hearing is expected to end to carry | :11:27. | :11:36.
on to the end of the week. Still to come, 60 days of sharks and | :11:37. | :11:41.
storms. We will be chatting to Bolton boys who survived the | :11:42. | :11:46.
Atlantic Road. And the launch of Super League 014. | :11:47. | :11:57.
A lot of boys in the second half of this programme! | :11:58. | :12:03.
They spent almost 60 days at sea, surviving storms and a catastrophic | :12:04. | :12:09.
problems with the boat and even a capsized mid`ocean. Now they are | :12:10. | :12:15.
celebrating in the Caribbean. There are some flash photography in this | :12:16. | :12:19.
report. Bobbing along on the beautiful | :12:20. | :12:24.
briny. An adventure for Mark Brocklehurst, Nick Griffiths, Matt | :12:25. | :12:27.
Nuttall and Finn Christo. The Bolton Atlantic challenge is about to set | :12:28. | :12:35.
off from the Canary Islands. This is for the Bolton Lads and Girls Club. | :12:36. | :12:41.
We spotted a problem there. We want to do this for a friend of ours He | :12:42. | :12:53.
was going to be one of the crew He died in a plane crash in Nepal. Said | :12:54. | :12:58.
to be the world's toughest rowing race, it took them across the | :12:59. | :13:05.
Caribbean to the island of Antigua. It was over 3000 miles of open | :13:06. | :13:11.
ocean. The waves towered over us and crashed on top of us. We were | :13:12. | :13:22.
inverted. 59 days, 18 hours, four minutes and nine seconds after | :13:23. | :13:26.
leaving the Canaries... A warm Bolton welcome at the quayside in | :13:27. | :13:29.
Antigua for Mark Brocklehurst, Nick Griffiths, Matt Nuttall and Finn | :13:30. | :13:35.
Christo. They should have been here in January but he is here now, so | :13:36. | :13:42.
that is fantastic. 16 team started the race. The boys from Bolton | :13:43. | :13:47.
finished the rate. Four birds have to be abandoned, while other teams | :13:48. | :13:53.
have yet to arrive in Antigua. Well done to them. | :13:54. | :14:03.
Standing the test of time is an overused phrase. GL Robertson has | :14:04. | :14:11.
been an institution in the city It started out as a pharmacy but | :14:12. | :14:15.
branched out to the newfangled craze of photography. | :14:16. | :14:21.
It has assessed its last print and shut up shop. | :14:22. | :14:31.
It is 1796. King George III is king. Spain declares war on Britain and a | :14:32. | :14:38.
pharmacy is" best. This is Cheapside, where the old pharmacy | :14:39. | :14:46.
used to be. `` a pharmacy is opened up in Lancashire. Most geographers | :14:47. | :14:54.
`` most photographers were doing their own work with chemicals that | :14:55. | :14:58.
could only be bought from the local chemists. This is my other camera, a | :14:59. | :15:06.
Kodak folding camera. Times changed and the shop moved here. Reg Stodden | :15:07. | :15:12.
started working in the chop from the 1960s but soon bought the building. | :15:13. | :15:19.
`` he bought the shop. When I started, I was using the touring | :15:20. | :15:27.
cameras. Then I have used cameras manufactured over a period of 1 0 | :15:28. | :15:33.
years. But now he is retiring. Nobody wants the business. It is a | :15:34. | :15:42.
shame to see it go. Very sad, very disappointing. All the family are | :15:43. | :15:48.
interested in photography. Not bad for a 200`year`old business from | :15:49. | :15:52.
pharmacy to photography. Who would have thought. | :15:53. | :15:59.
The end of an era. Football now There is a big game tonight. And | :16:00. | :16:02.
tonight the unstoppable force meets the immovable object in what | :16:03. | :16:06.
promises to be an explosive match at the Etihad. The Premier League's | :16:07. | :16:11.
most prolific scorers ` second placed Manchester City ` take on | :16:12. | :16:14.
third placed Chelsea. Richard Askam is at the stadium now. | :16:15. | :16:21.
I imagine it is all getting very exciting down there? You can always | :16:22. | :16:26.
tell when the fans think it is a pivotal fixture `` fixture, because | :16:27. | :16:35.
there is an edge in the night. It is the best scorers against the meanest | :16:36. | :16:40.
defence in Chelsea. The two managers do not particularly get on. They | :16:41. | :16:45.
have a long history going back to their time in Spain. Jose Mourinho | :16:46. | :16:49.
has been playing mind games. He has been saying things like, with all | :16:50. | :16:52.
their money, city should have one more trophies. Manuel Pellegrini is | :16:53. | :17:02.
not rising to it. I think we have two points more. It is not only a | :17:03. | :17:10.
race against Chelsea. There are chances to get the title so at this | :17:11. | :17:15.
moment of this it `` of the season, we are thinking about improving | :17:16. | :17:22.
everything. We are going to try to win. We are not going to change our | :17:23. | :17:26.
philosophy. We are going in a certain direction and we are not | :17:27. | :17:33.
changing because of one game against a certain opponent. In the | :17:34. | :17:41.
Championship, Burnley continued the pressure for automatic promotion | :17:42. | :17:44.
with a 3`3 draw away to second placed QPR. The clarets equalised | :17:45. | :17:57.
twice. But wins Park Rangers `` Queens Park Rangers share the | :17:58. | :18:01.
points. Blackburn's kept alive play`off hopes with a 2`0 win over | :18:02. | :18:04.
managerless Blackpool. Veteran midfielder David Dunn opened the | :18:05. | :18:07.
scoring in the first half with this. Grant Hanley got a late second. | :18:08. | :18:10.
Wigan continued their great run under new boss Uwe Rosler. Late | :18:11. | :18:13.
goals from Marc`Antoine Fortune and Jordi Gomez ensured a two`one win | :18:14. | :18:23.
over Charlton. If you're a fan of one of our Super League teams you | :18:24. | :18:27.
won't need me to tell you the long wait is nearly over. The new season | :18:28. | :18:30.
will get underway on Friday when Champions Wigan Warriors kick off | :18:31. | :18:33.
against Huddersfield Giants. Well today was the official launch for | :18:34. | :18:36.
the new campaign and it certainly got the juices flowing. | :18:37. | :18:41.
The men hoping to lead their team to Super League glory. And you can be | :18:42. | :18:44.
sure there'll plenty of bumps and bruises along the way. | :18:45. | :18:57.
Changes to the way the game has been structured come into play this | :18:58. | :19:05.
season. In particular the return of promotion and relegation. The North | :19:06. | :19:07.
West's five top division teams all have different targets. It will make | :19:08. | :19:14.
it a tougher competition. There `` it will be a lot more competitive. | :19:15. | :19:18.
When you are playing a team towards the bottom, they are fighting for | :19:19. | :19:25.
their lives. The Northwest's five top division teams all have | :19:26. | :19:27.
different targets. Wigan, double winners last season, to do it again. | :19:28. | :19:32.
Warrington Wolves pipped at the post in the final to finally make this | :19:33. | :19:36.
the year they win that elusive title. Much fancied St Helens to | :19:37. | :19:39.
bring the glory days back. Salford, with 14 new players, to challenge | :19:40. | :19:43.
for the first time. And Widnes to keep on improving. We brought in two | :19:44. | :19:53.
or three players to make a stronger throughout the year. We need a bit | :19:54. | :19:57.
of luck. The depth of our squad is not fantastic. And with the | :19:58. | :20:02.
relegation trapdoor the battle at top and bottom could be even more | :20:03. | :20:09.
intense than ever. It promises to be a fascinating | :20:10. | :20:14.
season. Because of that promotion and relegation coming in, it will be | :20:15. | :20:18.
very competitive indeed. Good luck to all of our teams. | :20:19. | :20:24.
Absolutely. Any team news for tonight? No! Not yet. The teams come | :20:25. | :20:35.
out shortly and I will be first with that. But we know there are a couple | :20:36. | :20:41.
of key players missing. Sergio Aguero, top scorer, out with a | :20:42. | :20:46.
hamstring problem for four to five weeks. Also Nasri, who has been | :20:47. | :20:52.
playing well. But Manchester City are not short of reinforcements | :20:53. | :20:57.
Negredo is likely to be upfront tonight. | :20:58. | :21:03.
Annabel was tried elegantly guide you towards telling us that! Will | :21:04. | :21:12.
Chelsea come to park the bus? Just hit us on the counterattack? Jose | :21:13. | :21:19.
Mourinho was complaining that West Ham's football was 19th century | :21:20. | :21:22.
football because of the way they parked the bus against his Chelsea. | :21:23. | :21:27.
But he is no stranger to playing that defensive way. The meanest | :21:28. | :21:31.
defence in the Premier League. It is safe to say that Chelsea will not be | :21:32. | :21:36.
open tonight. There is full commentary on BBC Radio Manchester. | :21:37. | :21:40.
One City player highly recommends it. Brazilian Fernandinho says he | :21:41. | :21:47.
listens to the station on the way to training sessions to learn English. | :21:48. | :22:07.
Of course he does! The voices of seven thousand | :22:08. | :22:10.
children will fill one of Manchester's biggest venues tonight. | :22:11. | :22:12.
Young Voices is aimed at bringing together children from across the | :22:13. | :22:15.
region and boosting their confidence. | :22:16. | :22:17.
And as if performing in an arena used by the likes of Beyonce and | :22:18. | :22:20.
Robbie Williams wasn't exciting enough, they'll be singing with the | :22:21. | :22:29.
X Factor's Stacey Solomon. There are loads of people there | :22:30. | :22:35.
