soon. That is all from the BBC News at Six, goodbye from me. On BBC One | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson and | :00:00. | :00:17.
Annabel Tiffin. Our top story. The family of Lee Rigby give us reaction | :00:18. | :00:32.
to today's sentence for his killers. Also tonight: Fears for thousands of | :00:33. | :00:42.
jobs in the North West after the Manchester`based coop announces | :00:43. | :00:45.
record losses and a restructure I've been looking at the role the | :00:46. | :00:48.
region's women played in World War One. And a golden ticket to the | :00:49. | :00:51.
Oscars this weekend for two film`makers from Manchester. The men | :00:52. | :00:54.
who murdered soldier Lee Rigby were jailed for life today ` but life | :00:55. | :00:59.
will mean life for only one of them. Michael Adebolajo was told he will | :01:00. | :01:02.
serve a whole life tariff ` that means he'll never be released. His | :01:03. | :01:07.
accomplice Michael Adebowale will serve at least 45 years before | :01:08. | :01:10.
there's any chance of him being considered for parole. Shortly after | :01:11. | :01:16.
the sentences were announced, Lee's uncle said he pitied the murderers | :01:17. | :01:20.
adding: "Lee will be remembered as the martyr and not these two | :01:21. | :01:23.
murderers". Meanwhile, in Fusilier Rigby's home town of Middleton, | :01:24. | :01:26.
there are calls for a lasting memorial to the murdered soldier. | :01:27. | :01:29.
Our Chief Reporter, Dave Guest, was there today. A few years back Lee | :01:30. | :01:38.
Rigby was a student in this classroom at Hopwood Hall College in | :01:39. | :01:50.
Middleton. It was here that the teenager fine`tuned his plans to | :01:51. | :01:53.
join the Army. This is Hopwood's Uniformed Public Services Course. | :01:54. | :01:58.
He's remembered here with fondness. He was dedicated and hard`working. | :01:59. | :02:10.
In the aftermath of Lee's brutal murder there were outpourings of | :02:11. | :02:13.
support for Lee's grieving family ` a family thrust into the media | :02:14. | :02:16.
spotlight. Today that family were in the spotlight again as they arrived | :02:17. | :02:20.
at the Old Bailey in London to discover what punishment Lee's | :02:21. | :02:22.
killers would face. The sentencing of Michael Adebowale and Michael | :02:23. | :02:25.
Adebolajo had been delayed amid discussion of whether whole life | :02:26. | :02:32.
sentences were legal. The judges decided they were. And today Michael | :02:33. | :02:37.
Adebalajo was handed one. His accomplice Michael Adebawale will | :02:38. | :02:41.
serve at least 45 years. A police officer spoke outside the court on | :02:42. | :02:48.
behalf of the family. We would like to thank the court for handing down | :02:49. | :02:51.
of what they believe the right prison terms. Back in Middleton a | :02:52. | :03:00.
sense that justice had been done. We will be here to offer help and | :03:01. | :03:06.
support and just to be here. This bench has a plaque attached with a | :03:07. | :03:29.
dedication to temper on. Lee Rigby. It would be nice to name something | :03:30. | :03:35.
after them. There are a number of options the council are looking at. | :03:36. | :03:43.
So it seems Lee Rigby won't ever be forgotten here. Dave Guest, BBC | :03:44. | :03:48.
Northwest Tonight, Middleton. Just before we came on air, I spoke to | :03:49. | :03:52.
Lee Rigby's Uncle Ray Dutton. He's a Councillor at Rochdale Town Hall. I | :03:53. | :03:56.
started by asking him for his reaction to today's sentences. It is | :03:57. | :04:00.
one of relief, actually. The family is looking for closure and we have | :04:01. | :04:07.
waited four months for the sentencing and we are happy with | :04:08. | :04:13.
that now. What feelings do you have towards the two men who killed Lee | :04:14. | :04:22.
Rigby? It is mainly petty and they have time to reflect on what they | :04:23. | :04:32.
have done. Lee will be remembered as the martyr, not those two. What do | :04:33. | :04:40.
you think of calls for the death penalty? I am personally against it | :04:41. | :04:48.
so I am pleased these people will serve the rest of lies jail behind | :04:49. | :04:55.
bars. They took Lee's life and know they have lost the lawn. `` their | :04:56. | :05:16.
own. However you coping? It has been very difficult and it has affected | :05:17. | :05:22.
the whole family as it has affected the whole nation but I believe the | :05:23. | :05:29.
nation has been grieving with us. How open can you be with Lee's young | :05:30. | :05:40.
son? Thankfully he was too young to understand what was going on. TV | :05:41. | :05:50.
clips and newspaper clips will be held for him and hopefully later he | :05:51. | :05:56.
will come to some understanding and have some good memories of his dad. | :05:57. | :06:09.
There are fears tonight over the future of thousands of jobs in the | :06:10. | :06:12.
North West at the Manchester`based Co`op group after it was revealed it | :06:13. | :06:16.
plans to sell off large parts of its business. Annabel has more. The | :06:17. | :06:27.
Co`op is a company which has its roots firmly in the North West, | :06:28. | :06:30.
formed 170 years ago in Rochdale. 3000 people work at the headquarters | :06:31. | :06:34.
in Manchester, and the group employs around ten thousand across the North | :06:35. | :06:37.
West. Today's business is a sprawling operation. It has | :06:38. | :06:41.
supermarkets, farms, pharmacies funeral homes and, of course, | :06:42. | :06:45.
financial services. And it is its losses within the banking arm which | :06:46. | :06:49.
are being blamed for its current situation, as it looks to off`load | :06:50. | :06:52.
parts of its business. The group is expected to announce record losses | :06:53. | :06:57.
of ?2 billion for 2013. It needs to save ?500 million over the next four | :06:58. | :07:00.
years, which means as well as selling it's farms and pharmacies, | :07:01. | :07:04.
many jobs could be under threat at head office where we join Mark | :07:05. | :07:12.
Edwardson now. Behind me is the modern and new Co`op headquarters in | :07:13. | :07:24.
Manchester. A statement of faith in the future. But behind its glass and | :07:25. | :07:28.
steel facade things are not going nearly as well as anyone, especially | :07:29. | :07:32.
its staff and loyal customers, would like. The Co`op's Manchester | :07:33. | :07:39.
headquarters ,lit by the afternoon sunshine... The business was built | :07:40. | :07:43.
on its core values set out during the founding of the Co`operative | :07:44. | :07:45.
movement in 19th`century Rochdale. Values cherished by its customers in | :07:46. | :07:51.
times of peace and war. Its place of the fabric of the region told | :07:52. | :07:54.
explained at the People's History museum in Manchester. It was founded | :07:55. | :07:58.
on democratic membership and women could vote ever got the vote in | :07:59. | :08:08.
parliament. Also the way it did business and the principles of | :08:09. | :08:19.
equality. Despite years of prosperity, Co`operative Group is in | :08:20. | :08:26.
deep financial trouble. The beloved dividend could become a museum piece | :08:27. | :08:29.
under proposals to drop it and replace it with lower prices in | :08:30. | :08:32.
shops. And there are other possible casualties. Many of the pharmacies | :08:33. | :08:41.
that it owns could be sold. These have come under pressure as the | :08:42. | :08:45.
National Health Service tries to save money on prescriptions. Staff | :08:46. | :08:49.
today told us they're still in the dark about their futures. I have not | :08:50. | :08:55.
heard much about it so I cannot comment on it. It is being urged to | :08:56. | :09:07.
stick to its core principles. I think it has a unique proposition | :09:08. | :09:12.
that it can make ear to the public that other retailers do not have. | :09:13. | :09:21.
The Co`op's future could be sealed as early as next month. Mark | :09:22. | :09:37.
Edwardson, BBC North West Tonight. The crunch meeting that will decide | :09:38. | :09:41.
the future will take place on the 26th of next month. But it will be | :09:42. | :09:45.
years before we know if the expected restructuring of Co`op will pay | :09:46. | :09:52.
dividends. More than 1000 jobs are set to be created in Liverpool, | :09:53. | :09:55.
through a ?16`million project to help businesses expand. The City | :09:56. | :09:58.
Council has successfully bid for almost ?8 million of European | :09:59. | :10:01.
funding, which will be matched by private sector money and public | :10:02. | :10:03.
funding. Nearly 1200 small businesses will be supported by the | :10:04. | :10:07.
new scheme, which will run until October 2015. Hillsborough | :10:08. | :10:08.
campaigners have described as "disgraceful", claims that tickets | :10:09. | :10:11.
for the 25th Anniversary Memorial Service were sold for profit by | :10:12. | :10:14.
touts outside Anfield. The tickets for next month's event are free ` | :10:15. | :10:17.
but it's believed a handful were disguised as match day tickets ` and | :10:18. | :10:21.
sold for as much as ?100 each. Children were given a lesson in how | :10:22. | :10:25.
not to spell when council contractors painted this road sign | :10:26. | :10:28.
outside a school in Chester. The markings outside Highfield Community | :10:29. | :10:30.
Primary School in Blacon was meant to read "clear" but instead read | :10:31. | :10:33.
"claer". The sign was corrected this morning for free. A survivor of an | :10:34. | :10:43.
arson attack in Altrincham that killed her mother and teenage | :10:44. | :10:46.
brother has been giving a dramatic account of what happened to an | :10:47. | :10:49.
inquest. David Potts broke into his former girlfriend's house in the | :10:50. | :10:52.
middle of the night and began pouring petrol over the floor and | :10:53. | :10:55.
himself. The inquest in Stockport heard of the violent struggle to | :10:56. | :10:58.
prevent him igniting the fuel before they were engulfed | :10:59. | :11:00.
Cailin Van Straaten and a brother who was four at the time were the | :11:01. | :11:06.
only survivors of the fire. Today, she gave a vivid account of what | :11:07. | :11:09.
happened the night her mother's former boyfriend, David Potts, took | :11:10. | :11:12.
a taxi to her home carrying canisters of petrol. It was | :11:13. | :11:23.
September 2011. She woke early to the sound of a loud bang. David | :11:24. | :11:32.
Potts had broken into the house He calmly poured petrol on the floor | :11:33. | :11:41.
below. Her brother went to reach a hammer to stop them. As they | :11:42. | :11:47.
wrestled with them, he took his lighter and engulf them all in | :11:48. | :11:53.
flames. Tracy Jones and her 15`year`old son, Shaun, died along | :11:54. | :12:03.
with David Potts. A month before the fire, social workers came to the | :12:04. | :12:06.
house to warn Tracy Jones that Potts was a danger to her children. 3 ` | :12:07. | :12:10.
years`old, he was a heavy drinker and drug abuser. He had a history of | :12:11. | :12:14.
mental illness and had had a child by an underage girl in Lancashire. | :12:15. | :12:17.
Tracy Jones ended their relationship, but he couldn't accept | :12:18. | :12:20.
it. Her daughter told the inquest today he was "creepy" and aggressive | :12:21. | :12:23.
and had already hurt the four`year`old. Her mother, she said, | :12:24. | :12:25.
was "submissive." She was frightened of Potts. The inquest is expected to | :12:26. | :12:29.
continue its investigation into what happened here for some weeks yet. | :12:30. | :12:32.
Stuart Flinders, BBC North West Tonight, Altrincham. | :12:33. | :12:36.
Still to come on North West Tonight. We take a look at what this year | :12:37. | :12:42.
holds for Sale Sharks star Mark Cueto. What would you do if you were | :12:43. | :13:01.
a God? The short film which has propelled two Manchester film`makers | :13:02. | :13:10.
to the Oscars. All this week we re marking the 100th anniversary of | :13:11. | :13:13.
World War One with a look at how the war affected life here in the North | :13:14. | :13:20.
West. Tonight, we're looking at the Cunard Shell Works, one of the many | :13:21. | :13:24.
munitions factories that sprung up around the region. It was built by | :13:25. | :13:27.
the great Liverpool`based shipping line, and as I've been finding out, | :13:28. | :13:30.
it was the first heavy munitions factory to employ women. Is the | :13:31. | :13:41.
magnificent Cunard Building in Liverpool. In 1918, there was a | :13:42. | :13:49.
magnificent party here. But they were not celebrating the glamour of | :13:50. | :13:56.
transatlantic liners. They were celebrating the success of a much | :13:57. | :13:58.
more grim and legal business that take place a few miles away on the | :13:59. | :14:07.
Dock Road. The war that was going to be all over by Christmas had, by | :14:08. | :14:12.
1915 settled in to an appalling war of attrition. Expect a like Cunard | :14:13. | :14:34.
`` expertee companies like Cunard were drafted in. This is all that is | :14:35. | :14:45.
left of the munitions works. With men away, all the workers were | :14:46. | :14:51.
women. The solution was female labour. They decided that they were | :14:52. | :15:02.
capable of doing the whole operation with women. It was the first | :15:03. | :15:08.
munitions factory in the country to employ entirely female labour. This | :15:09. | :15:15.
radical move was replicated across the country and noted in a letter to | :15:16. | :15:32.
Galbraith from his staff. It goes on to say that he demonstrated to the | :15:33. | :15:37.
Hall engineering community of Great Britain what could be done. Life in | :15:38. | :15:44.
the factory was caught in a remarkable series of pictures caught | :15:45. | :15:53.
by Cunard. The serenity of the scenes is a strange contrast to the | :15:54. | :15:57.
devastation that the shells would produce. They had their on magazine | :15:58. | :16:14.
and there on musicians. `` their own musicians. It might not have led to | :16:15. | :16:33.
a sense of the title meant `` entitlement but no women could see | :16:34. | :16:43.
that their work was appreciated `` now women could see that their work | :16:44. | :16:54.
was appreciated. And don't forget your BBC local radio station has a | :16:55. | :16:57.
different World War One at Home story every morning at this week at | :16:58. | :17:01.
8.15. It's a series made in partnership with Imperial War | :17:02. | :17:37.
Museums. Sport now, and Richard A performance by Manchester United in | :17:38. | :17:39.
the Champions League that David Moyes described as the worst his | :17:40. | :17:43.
team has played in Europe? Yes, someone said it was the worst | :17:44. | :17:46.
performance in Greece since Shane Ritchie played Danny Zuko in the | :17:47. | :17:49.
musical. No laughing matter for United fans of course. Two`zero | :17:50. | :17:51.
against Olympiakos who the Greek champions, but let's face it aren't | :17:52. | :17:55.
at the level of Bayern Munich or Barcelona. United would have | :17:56. | :17:58.
expected at least a draw and now progressing into the quarter finals | :17:59. | :18:01.
becomes very tricky in the return at Old Trafford in three weeks' time. | :18:02. | :18:04.
The Greeks scored once in either half. This second goal was the | :18:05. | :18:08.
killer. David De Gea unable to keep it out and at the other end United | :18:09. | :18:12.
didn't create enough and when they did couldn't make it count. This | :18:13. | :18:15.
chance fell to the right man Robin Van Persie, but the Dutchman smashed | :18:16. | :18:19.
it the wrong side of the bar. Some of the back pages will have made for | :18:20. | :18:23.
very unpleasant reading for David Moyes, and Robin Van Persie's quotes | :18:24. | :18:26.
after the game might not have pleased him either? No, the Dutchman | :18:27. | :18:29.
said various things ` that his team`mates are often in the area he | :18:30. | :18:33.
wants to play in, that as a result he has to change the way he plays, | :18:34. | :18:37.
that the build`up was too slow. All sorts of problems for David Moyes to | :18:38. | :18:41.
address before the next match against West Brom a week on | :18:42. | :18:44.
Saturday. In last night's Football League action Preston North End | :18:45. | :18:47.
dropped two points at home to Rotherham who scored an 89 minute | :18:48. | :18:49.
equalizer. It finished three`three in a thrilling game at Deepdale Joe | :18:50. | :18:53.
Garner thought his 18th goal of the season had won it for North End who | :18:54. | :18:57.
were left frustrated by just a point and are six points from the | :18:58. | :19:00.
automatic promotion places. After narrowly avoiding relegation last | :19:01. | :19:02.
season it's been a completely different campaign so far for Sale | :19:03. | :19:06.
Sharks. The Sharks are looking up at the top six this time rather than | :19:07. | :19:09.
worrying about the battle of the bottom. Some things don't change, | :19:10. | :19:12.
though. Mark Cueto remains a key part of the team and he's still | :19:13. | :19:16.
breaking records. He has proved himself time and again for club and | :19:17. | :19:20.
country. He is a great team man and the enthusiasm is all was there `` | :19:21. | :19:40.
the enthusiasm is always there. His career has seen him break on record | :19:41. | :19:54.
after the other. `` one record after another. People talk about my | :19:55. | :20:03.
loyalty to the club but they have been loyal to me as well. They have | :20:04. | :20:13.
always stood by me. He has changed his mind about calling time on his | :20:14. | :20:18.
playing days so good though still be time to make it 100 tries in the top | :20:19. | :20:25.
division? If I can get to ten this year, 100 is in sight but we will | :20:26. | :20:35.
wait and see. If he stays free from injury, a magic century of scores | :20:36. | :20:46.
might not be the surprise. Thousands of people are expected to line the | :20:47. | :20:49.
streets of Preston for the civic funeral of Sir Tom Finney tomorrow. | :20:50. | :20:55.
A legend for England and Preston North End, Sir Tom died at the age | :20:56. | :21:09.
of 91, 12 days ago. Many famous faces from the world of football | :21:10. | :21:12.
will be among the 600 invited guests at Preston Minster. But the only way | :21:13. | :21:16.
for the general public to watch Sir Tom's funeral service is on a big | :21:17. | :21:20.
screen at Preston North End. It s ticket only, and tickets can be | :21:21. | :21:23.
obtained from the club. The roads around Deepdale will be closed | :21:24. | :21:26.
tomorrow morning and the funeral cortege will leave Deepdale at | :21:27. | :21:29.
12.15. It will then move along Sir Tom Finney Way, Deepdale Road, and | :21:30. | :21:32.
Ringway, before arriving at Tithebarn Street at around 12.4 , | :21:33. | :21:35.
where it will be joined by a mounted police escort. A few minutes later | :21:36. | :21:39.
it will arrive at Preston Guildhall, where it will be met by the Preston | :21:40. | :21:42.
and District Veterans Association. It should arrive at Preston Minster | :21:43. | :21:46.
on Church Street at around 12.5 . Church Street will be closed to both | :21:47. | :21:49.
traffic and pedestrians throughout the service. The service itself is | :21:50. | :21:53.
due to start at one o'clock, and will be followed by a private | :21:54. | :21:57.
burial. If you'd like to sign the Books of Condolences which have been | :21:58. | :22:01.
opened for Sir Tom, you can do that at Preston Town Hall or the Harris | :22:02. | :22:05.
Museum until 6.30 tomorrow evening. It will be an emotional occasion. | :22:06. | :22:13.
Tomorrow night we will be live from Preston at 6:30pm. It was shot over | :22:14. | :22:34.
three days in Manchester and its stars acted for free, but now the | :22:35. | :22:37.
British film The Voorman Problem, could win an Oscar. It was made by | :22:38. | :22:41.
Baldwin Li and Mark Gill who got in touch with Kevin Spacey to see if he | :22:42. | :22:45.
could lend them a hand. Colin Paterson's been finding out. We shot | :22:46. | :22:54.
the opening scenes at Strangeways prison. On Sunday, they will join | :22:55. | :23:11.
Hollywood stars at the Academy Awards. The film stars Tom Hollander | :23:12. | :23:43.
and Martin Freeman.. I did some work as a cameraman. I worked on classic | :23:44. | :24:04.
Dr Who DVDs. What will they say if they win? Not a bad problem for the | :24:05. | :24:27.
boys from the The Voorman Problem. And now the weather. | :24:28. | :24:35.
We had a perfect day. But last night lines of showers worked their way | :24:36. | :24:46.
across Lancashire and some of them were fairly heavy. You will have | :24:47. | :24:55.
noticed the wind biting through the day. The sun made a massive | :24:56. | :25:01.
difference but if you were exposed to that when it has felt very raw. | :25:02. | :25:18.
`` exposed to that wind. You can see some of the rain will be fairly | :25:19. | :25:23.
heavy and there could be sleet and snow. It is a narrow band so it does | :25:24. | :25:34.
not last too long. By four o'clock five o'clock in the morning it will | :25:35. | :25:41.
have gone from the Isle of Man. By about seven o'clock it may be over | :25:42. | :25:53.
the Pennines. If you get a couple of hours of clear weather temperatures | :25:54. | :25:58.
will not fall too far and will be about five degrees of six degrees | :25:59. | :26:03.
from many places. Tomorrow it will be scattered showers and patchy | :26:04. | :26:11.
cloud. The showers will be more evenly distributed tomorrow and | :26:12. | :26:14.
hopefully that will not be too many of them. That Breeze continues to be | :26:15. | :26:29.
fairly brisk and the more southern parts may see showers as they head | :26:30. | :26:43.
towards the time. `` as they head towards tea`time. A yellow alert has | :26:44. | :26:48.
been issued by the Met Office. We have added a new viewer as we | :26:49. | :27:13.
have been on a. A grand daughter for Dave Guest. Goodbye. | :27:14. | :27:23. |
