and Thursday. That's it. | :00:00. | :00:09.
Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Annabel Tiffin and | :00:10. | :00:13.
Roger Johnson. Our top storx: The train drain. Anger as rolling stock | :00:14. | :00:17.
from our most overcrowded route is sent south to increase capacity | :00:18. | :00:24.
there. We'll be live at one of the region's biggest stations. | :00:25. | :00:26.
Also tonight: Stronger together A suggestion Liverpool and Manchester | :00:27. | :00:29.
should merge to help close the north`south divide. | :00:30. | :00:31.
I meet the Bolton boy done good He's built a multi`million pound | :00:32. | :00:35.
business empire on the back of a ?1 bet. | :00:36. | :00:41.
And role reversal. The prim`ry school pupils using their | :00:42. | :00:43.
technological know`how to tdach the older generation. | :00:44. | :01:01.
Rail passenger groups are condemning as "crazy and scandalous" a decision | :01:02. | :01:05.
to transfer trains from a crowded line out of Manchester ` to routes | :01:06. | :01:12.
in the Home Counties. Travelwatch North West says that nine of the 70 | :01:13. | :01:15.
Transpennine Express trains ` which run between Manchester, Leeds and | :01:16. | :01:18.
Hull ` are to be switched to Chiltern Rail. Our Transport | :01:19. | :01:21.
Correspondent Judy Hobson is at Manchester's Piccadilly Station It | :01:22. | :01:40.
hasn't gone done well? This is one of the busiest routes in thd | :01:41. | :01:45.
country. So why has this decision been made? Well, TransPennine | :01:46. | :02:01.
Express don't own the stock. It s up to the Department for Transport to | :02:02. | :02:06.
decide where the stock goes. There are a lot of very unhappy pdople. | :02:07. | :02:15.
The First TransPennine Exprdss routes in and out of Manchester are | :02:16. | :02:18.
so overcrowded that at peak rush hour times nearly a quarter of | :02:19. | :02:22.
passengers are forced to st`nd ` according to government figtres In | :02:23. | :02:24.
fact, the early morning Manchester to Middlesbrough service is the | :02:25. | :02:27.
third most crowded in the country. News that the company will now lose | :02:28. | :02:31.
nine of its 70 trains has ottraged rail passenger groups. It is | :02:32. | :02:46.
unexpected. In a year, nearly a million seats off the network. | :02:47. | :02:50.
TransPennine Express recently acknowledged a problem with | :02:51. | :02:58.
overcrowding. It said a ?60 million cash boost from the governmdnt would | :02:59. | :03:01.
improve services. An increase in the number of train journeys is due to | :03:02. | :03:05.
start from later this year ` now it seems they'll lose them agahn next | :03:06. | :03:08.
year. This is one of the most overcrowded routes. We should not be | :03:09. | :03:16.
transferring stock down to the south`east. This is not accdptable. | :03:17. | :03:24.
If the cuts go ahead, it's dstimated there would be 30,000 fewer seats on | :03:25. | :03:34.
TransPennine routes per week! They usually have only a couple of | :03:35. | :03:39.
carriages. There aren't enotgh seats now. Many people are standing the | :03:40. | :03:46.
whole journey. So why this sudden U`turn by a government who `ppears | :03:47. | :03:49.
to be favouring passengers hn the south? The Department for Transport | :03:50. | :03:51.
says passengers shouldn't bd concerned. It says it will find | :03:52. | :03:55.
rolling stock from elsewherd ` and passenger journeys won't be | :03:56. | :03:57.
affected. Rail Passengers groups are yet to be convinced. Nick Donovan is | :03:58. | :04:11.
from the company. Why has this decision been made? Over thd next | :04:12. | :04:17.
year there will be about ?60,00 of investment. We have had to | :04:18. | :04:29.
renegotiate the contract. It is quite a constrained fleet. Somebody | :04:30. | :04:37.
else has been able to offer a longer term deal. The government s`ys that | :04:38. | :04:47.
we should not worry about it... We are currently talking to thd | :04:48. | :04:52.
Department for Transport. The challenge is that it is a vdry busy | :04:53. | :04:57.
market. Longer term that is a lot of money going into the North of | :04:58. | :05:01.
England for new trains and so on. But there is a short`term pdriod, | :05:02. | :05:06.
where a short, diesel fleet is very critical. This seems a very | :05:07. | :05:16.
confusing situation? We are opening up the discussion with the | :05:17. | :05:19.
Department for Transport. From March of next year, as part of thd | :05:20. | :05:26.
government's read varnishing programme, we are speaking to them | :05:27. | :05:41.
and hoping to get a good outcome. `` refurnishing. Thank you. All the | :05:42. | :05:48.
trains I have seen here tonhght have been very busy indeed. | :05:49. | :05:56.
The Court of Appeal is set to hear the case of a former Manchester gang | :05:57. | :06:00.
member who was convicted of murder. Dwaine George was jailed for 12 | :06:01. | :06:03.
years after a teenager was shot dead in Miles Platting. The case has been | :06:04. | :06:06.
investigated for tonight's Hnside Out North West programme by former | :06:07. | :06:09.
Lancashire Police detective Michael Gradwell. Michael, what's the | :06:10. | :06:19.
background to this case? Thd murder in 2001 of 18`year`old Danidl Dale | :06:20. | :06:22.
shocked Manchester ` a city already dubbed "Gunchester". Daniel was an | :06:23. | :06:26.
innocent victim of gang warfare that had already claimed 30 lives in just | :06:27. | :06:29.
five years. Disputes over drugs money, territory and reputations | :06:30. | :06:36.
spiralled into killings. Thd man convicted by a jury of Danidl Dale's | :06:37. | :06:40.
murder was Dwaine George. Hd served 12 years in prison and was released | :06:41. | :06:43.
late last year. He's always denied involvement in the killing, and now | :06:44. | :06:50.
hopes to clear his name. Let's hear what Dwaine George told us `bout | :06:51. | :06:53.
joining the notorious Cheetham Hill gang as a teenager. You went places. | :06:54. | :07:02.
People respected you becausd they feared you. You could just leet a | :07:03. | :07:05.
group of guys... Something could happen, like a confrontation... You | :07:06. | :07:08.
could end up fighting. As a gang, we were known for robberies, drugs and | :07:09. | :07:12.
partying. We got in fights from time to time. That was our life, really. | :07:13. | :07:15.
Were people scared of you? Some people, yeah. Some of the evidence | :07:16. | :07:22.
in this case relates to what's called gunshot residue ` wh`t is | :07:23. | :07:25.
that? When detectives investigate a shooting they look for thesd | :07:26. | :07:28.
microscopic particles which are ejected during firing. Thesd | :07:29. | :07:33.
particles can land on the shooter and their clothing. The mord | :07:34. | :07:36.
particles, the stronger the link between weapon and suspect. In a | :07:37. | :07:41.
coat at Dwaine George's house, forensic teams found gunshot residue | :07:42. | :07:48.
` but only two minute particles And, in a car belonging to Dwaine's | :07:49. | :07:51.
mother, they discovered a spent cartridge case which he admhtted was | :07:52. | :07:56.
his. The shell case wasn't connected to the murder ` but could it have | :07:57. | :08:00.
contaminated the coat? Let's hear what ballistics expert Philhp Boyce | :08:01. | :08:06.
has to say about that. One spent cartridge case will contain tens if | :08:07. | :08:10.
not hundreds of thousands of gunshot residue particles. These particles | :08:11. | :08:14.
are so small, even from a spent cartridge, they can become `irborne | :08:15. | :08:16.
and contaminate everything `round them. I would advise the police that | :08:17. | :08:24.
those levels are so low that you really can't come to any conclusion. | :08:25. | :08:31.
In effect, they're insignifhcant. Have the courts changed thehr view | :08:32. | :08:34.
on forensic evidence like this since the original murder? In those 1 | :08:35. | :08:39.
years since Daniel Dale's ddath courts have become much mord | :08:40. | :08:42.
cautious about the value of gunshot residue. So one of the new puestions | :08:43. | :08:47.
the Court of Appeal will be asking is, with just two particles to go | :08:48. | :08:52.
on, was it reliable evidencd? Michael Gradwell, thank you. You can | :08:53. | :09:01.
see more of Michael's report on Inside Out North West tonight on BBC | :09:02. | :09:06.
One at 7:30pm. Plans to set up a free school in | :09:07. | :09:10.
Oldham staffed entirely by former military personnel have been killed | :09:11. | :09:13.
off by the Department for Education. The Phoenix Free School was due to | :09:14. | :09:16.
open in September but after representations by Oldham Council ` | :09:17. | :09:19.
who cited the over capacity of secondary school places in the town | :09:20. | :09:22.
` the Department for Educathon has withdrawn its support for the | :09:23. | :09:26.
project. Motorists who use the Mersex Tunnels | :09:27. | :09:29.
are being subjected to highway robbery, according to UKIP. The | :09:30. | :09:32.
party held a protest near to the Kingsway Tunnel entrance in Wallasey | :09:33. | :09:36.
this morning. It was one of six being staged across the country | :09:37. | :09:41.
Greater Manchester's Police Commissioner Tony Lloyd has set up | :09:42. | :09:44.
an independent panel to revhew the way police deal with protests and | :09:45. | :09:47.
demonstrations. The announcdment was brought forward following rdcent | :09:48. | :09:49.
claims by anti`fracking demonstrators that they had been | :09:50. | :09:52.
subject to rough treatment from GMP officers. The Chief Constable Sir | :09:53. | :09:54.
Peter Fahy has welcomed the development. | :09:55. | :10:02.
There've been large plumes of smoke across Salford and Manchestdr from a | :10:03. | :10:06.
fire at a paper recycling shte. Fire crews are still dealing with the | :10:07. | :10:09.
blaze. It started late last night on Duncan Street in Salford. Some local | :10:10. | :10:20.
train services have been disrupted. You could see it miles away. | :10:21. | :10:25.
It's not something most people would welcome on their doorstep ` a toxic | :10:26. | :10:29.
tip. So plans to expand one in West Lancashire are meeting with strong | :10:30. | :10:32.
opposition from people living nearby. The tip's owner says it s | :10:33. | :10:35.
perfectly safe ` but needs to be bigger. The locals in Skelmdrsdale | :10:36. | :10:38.
have mobilised to fight his proposals. Our Chief Reportdr, Dave | :10:39. | :10:41.
Guest, has been speaking to both sides. Whitemoss Tip on the | :10:42. | :10:44.
outskirts of Skelmersdale t`kes the waste that others might not want. | :10:45. | :10:47.
The types of waste we take `re hazardous, like contaminated soils. | :10:48. | :10:51.
Everything that comes to us is treated before it comes to the site. | :10:52. | :10:56.
It's the waste that's hazardous ` not the site. This 17 acre site has | :10:57. | :11:01.
been operating for the past 20 years or so. It can take up to 150,00 | :11:02. | :11:09.
tonnes of waste each year. Lost is said to come from the north west. | :11:10. | :11:13.
But it'll be full within thd next couple of years, which is why the | :11:14. | :11:17.
company want to extend it. Hn fact, they plan to take the site `cross | :11:18. | :11:20.
this swathe of land which borders the M58. Many locals are far from | :11:21. | :11:27.
happy. We've had our fair share of landfill in this community. 13 | :11:28. | :11:33.
landfill sites. Extension after extension. We think enough hs | :11:34. | :11:41.
enough. There is a substanthal body of scientific evidence, published in | :11:42. | :11:44.
reputable journals, linking landfill sites with serious illnesses. Do | :11:45. | :11:49.
people round here have anything to worry about? The sites are very | :11:50. | :11:55.
tightly regulated. The government has carried out lots of | :11:56. | :11:58.
investigations... Public he`lth bodies will not support the | :11:59. | :12:03.
allegations made. Opponents remain unconvinced and say they've now | :12:04. | :12:06.
gathered names of around 3,000 people who are concerned about the | :12:07. | :12:11.
expansion proposals. The proposals will be considered during a public | :12:12. | :12:15.
examination later in the ye`r. The final decision will be taken by the | :12:16. | :12:34.
Environment Secretary next xear Now, can you imagine this. Driving | :12:35. | :12:39.
up the M6 from London and bding greeted by a road sign welcoming you | :12:40. | :12:48.
to ManPool. Maybe LiverChester! A new super`city linking, you guessed | :12:49. | :12:51.
it, Manchester to Liverpool. It s one idea from a new commisshon which | :12:52. | :12:55.
will advise the government on how it could help cities outside of London | :12:56. | :12:58.
better perform. Jayne McCubbin is outside now ` and I suspect there | :12:59. | :13:01.
are plenty of people howling at their TV screens right now, because | :13:02. | :13:04.
behind this are years of fidrce rivalry! I'll tell you what ` they | :13:05. | :13:20.
weren't liking this on Facebook this afternoon. We're here because this | :13:21. | :13:26.
is where the Scouse`Manc rivalry first began. The Manchester Ship | :13:27. | :13:29.
Canal. But what we're talking about is an idea ` to better conndct the | :13:30. | :13:33.
cities and reap the rewards that follow. Massive response to this on | :13:34. | :13:41.
Facebook today. Manpool ` sounds like a male dating site ` s`ys one | :13:42. | :13:45.
person. No ` it's not a mald dating agency... It is a serious economic | :13:46. | :13:49.
idea that will go to governlent later this year. Two cities with a | :13:50. | :13:52.
long history of rivalry. Not just on the football pitch ` but | :13:53. | :13:55.
economically too. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway ` the first | :13:56. | :13:58.
inter`city railway in the world But rivalry reared its head when | :13:59. | :14:01.
Mancunian merchants grew tired of paying dues to bring goods hn and | :14:02. | :14:05.
out of Manchester. So, this was built ` the world's biggest ship | :14:06. | :14:08.
canal ` a big bold statement which told Liverpool 'we don't nedd you'. | :14:09. | :14:12.
But is it time to man`up to the possibility of a ManPool? It's not | :14:13. | :14:22.
about trying to get them to be the same place. It's about workhng | :14:23. | :14:30.
together. The reality is, the North is massively overshadowed bx the | :14:31. | :14:33.
might of London. And the gap is growing. Look at what happens in | :14:34. | :14:37.
rush hour across the countrx. The population in London booms. All that | :14:38. | :14:40.
economic activity. Creating all of that wealth. Manchester bardly a | :14:41. | :14:43.
blip in the distance. Now ` look at these stats. In 2011 the government | :14:44. | :14:46.
invested ?1.2 billion in research and development in London and the | :14:47. | :14:50.
south east. In the North West, just ?82 million. In terms of tr`nsport | :14:51. | :14:53.
infrastructure, the governmdnt's spending ?5,000 per person hn London | :14:54. | :15:00.
and the south east. Compare that to ?800 per person here. We ard wasting | :15:01. | :15:11.
potential. If we invested shmilar amounts... We could see our | :15:12. | :15:30.
economies in the north flourish As far as Manchester is concerned, they | :15:31. | :15:40.
often look towards Leeds. Who knew the Spice Girls were unwitthngly | :15:41. | :15:43.
onto a new economic strategx? When two become one... Could it happen? | :15:44. | :15:49.
The Liverpudlians could takd off if they were the second part of the | :15:50. | :15:59.
name. `` kick off. Who knew you were a Spice Girls fan! | :16:00. | :16:12.
Still to come on North West Tonight. Wembley winners again. Manchester | :16:13. | :16:15.
City lift the League Cup for the first time since 1976. | :16:16. | :16:22.
And primary school are coming IT on its head. `` turning. | :16:23. | :16:31.
What can you do with a pound? These days, you might say, not very much. | :16:32. | :16:36.
But what if you placed a bet with it and ended up with a billion pound | :16:37. | :16:39.
company? Well, that's what happened to John Roberts. His friend wagered | :16:40. | :16:42.
a pound John wouldn't get hhs business idea off the ground. AO.com | :16:43. | :16:46.
has just floated on the Stock Exchange and John's share h`s made | :16:47. | :16:49.
him a very wealthy man. Mark Edwardson went to meet the Bolton | :16:50. | :16:54.
boy made good. You might know AO.com from its TV adverts. It grew into a | :16:55. | :17:00.
huge company selling washing machines and fridges online, from | :17:01. | :17:03.
bizarrely humble beginnings in a Bolton pub... And a bet. Wotld all | :17:04. | :17:18.
that have happened without the bet? I couldn't say! John Roberts left | :17:19. | :17:21.
school without qualifications. The Bolton boy's become known as the | :17:22. | :17:25.
Kitchen King. His firm's floated on the stock Exchange, valued `t ? .6 | :17:26. | :17:31.
billion. It's reported he's taken home ?86 million so far. We talk | :17:32. | :17:41.
about culture... This our pdople having fun. Today, celebrathons at | :17:42. | :17:46.
the firm's headquarters in Horwich. We had a viable business. To do | :17:47. | :17:55.
?80,000 in our first month... We knew we could build it. It's a real | :17:56. | :18:00.
buzz. AO.Com now employs 1,000 people. Appropriately, the company | :18:01. | :18:14.
has laid out the red carpet. There is always fun stuff happening. You | :18:15. | :18:20.
are made to feel part of a lassive family. Did your friend pay up on | :18:21. | :18:41.
the bed? `` bet? Of course. Well done to him! | :18:42. | :18:48.
Richard is here with the sport now and the quadruple... Or certainly | :18:49. | :18:51.
the treble... Could be on for Manchester City. It didn't look good | :18:52. | :18:58.
at half`time. They were loshng one note to Sunderland. `` 1`0. | :18:59. | :19:08.
Manchester City are also in the quarterfinal of the FA Cup. They are | :19:09. | :19:13.
in the champions league as well Far from basking in the success of his | :19:14. | :19:20.
first trophy in England, Manuel Pellegrini is hoping this is just | :19:21. | :19:39.
the start. Manuel Pellegrinh! Who says that the Capital One Ctp | :19:40. | :19:54.
doesn't matter? Toure! What a goal! Fantastic! Oh yes! That was | :19:55. | :20:18.
incredible. Toure... To Nav`s.. All over! The commitment from everybody | :20:19. | :20:26.
is fantastic. It means so mtch to the fans. This is the best. Manuel | :20:27. | :20:42.
Pellegrini! To win the first trophy is important for me and important | :20:43. | :20:53.
for the club. City 3`1 Sunddrland! So the treble or even the qtadruple | :20:54. | :21:04.
is still on for Manchester City One down, three more to go! Thex have | :21:05. | :21:13.
just got to keep believing. Manuel Pellegrini! Manchester City fans | :21:14. | :21:26.
were great fun yesterday. Luiz Suarez was instrumental in all | :21:27. | :21:29.
three of Liverpool's goals `t Southampton to take them into second | :21:30. | :21:32.
place in the Premier League ` four points behind Chelsea. The Truguayan | :21:33. | :21:36.
capitalised on a poor back pass to score this ` his 24th leagud goal of | :21:37. | :21:39.
the season. Suarez then provided the pass for substitute Raheem Sterling | :21:40. | :21:43.
to make it 2`0. He then won a penalty which Steven Gerrard | :21:44. | :21:46.
converted for their four win in a row. | :21:47. | :21:55.
Bolton Wanderers moved nine points clear of the Championship rdlegation | :21:56. | :21:58.
zone with a 4`0 win over Bl`ckburn. Neil Danns crossed to midfidlder | :21:59. | :22:01.
Mohamed Kamara who headed W`nderers ahead. Joe Mason doubled thd lead | :22:02. | :22:10.
before the break. In the second half, Jay Spearing's long r`nge shot | :22:11. | :22:14.
was adjudged to have crossed the line. Andre Moritz's got thd fourth. | :22:15. | :22:19.
