early 1990s. That's all from the BBC News at Six. It's goodbye from me. | :00:00. | 3:59:59
On Good evening. Welcome to North West | :00:00. | :00:08.
Tonight with Annabel Tiffin and Roger Johnson. Our top storx tonight | :00:09. | :00:11.
is a potential bumper jobs boost for Barrow. Yes, ?300 million to be | :00:12. | :00:20.
spent on revamping the famots shipyard. When it is finishdd, they | :00:21. | :00:24.
say, it will be fit to build the next generation of nuclear | :00:25. | :00:27.
submarines. We'll hear from the leader of the local council. Also | :00:28. | :00:30.
tonight: The father of a Merseyside sailor imprisoned in India since | :00:31. | :00:33.
Christmas talks of his fears. The volunteer paramedics convicted | :00:34. | :00:36.
after helping at a road acchdent ` even the judge thinks it's tnfair. | :00:37. | :00:41.
And the art of selfie promotion Manchester is named the self`snap | :00:42. | :00:43.
capital of Europe. Thousands of new jobs could be | :00:44. | :01:03.
created in Barrow after the government announced a ?300 million | :01:04. | :01:05.
investment in the town's shhpyard. It'll mean a major redevelopment for | :01:06. | :01:09.
the site to prepare for a ndw generation of nuclear submarines. | :01:10. | :01:13.
The decision on whether to build them, though, is still two xears | :01:14. | :01:20.
away. Potentially, good news, though. Our Chief Reporter Dave | :01:21. | :01:25.
Guest is in Barrow now. Davd. Yes, and the dock behind me as to be | :01:26. | :01:31.
the most famous landmark around these parts, but it is a landmark | :01:32. | :01:34.
that is going to change, as they redeveloped the shipyard, spending | :01:35. | :01:39.
300 and pounds. They say thdy will need around 850 people to c`rry out | :01:40. | :01:43.
construction work in the next eight years, and they say when it is | :01:44. | :01:47.
finished, this place will bd fit to build the new generation of nuclear | :01:48. | :01:54.
submarines. These duke class submarines are kept Barrow busy for | :01:55. | :01:57.
a number of years now, and will pull some years to come. There is an air | :01:58. | :02:01.
of optimism about the place. I have lived in Barrow all my life, and I | :02:02. | :02:05.
think the fact that BAE are doing such great things with the | :02:06. | :02:09.
submarines, it is fantastic to have that opportunity. What do you see | :02:10. | :02:16.
yourselves being here when xou reach retirement age? I hope so. BAE | :02:17. | :02:21.
Systems were commissioned to build seven submarines in all. Two are in | :02:22. | :02:25.
service, four are in progress, and today they announced that work has | :02:26. | :02:28.
now begun on the seventh and final one. This is the third of the | :02:29. | :02:34.
submarines being built here in Barrow. Not a place for the | :02:35. | :02:38.
claustrophobic. 100 people can spend up to two or three months all`cause | :02:39. | :02:42.
at it together in here. Obvhously, they get to know one another very | :02:43. | :02:46.
well. This submarine is classed as nearly finished, though it will not | :02:47. | :02:50.
actually see operational service until 2016. This Duke class is | :02:51. | :02:58.
nuclear power, but does not carry nuclear weaponry. That is the job of | :02:59. | :03:04.
the Vanguard class, who are now reaching the end of their n`tural | :03:05. | :03:07.
lives. A replacement is being considered, but the decision will | :03:08. | :03:12.
not be made to 2016. We will support investment. Today, the Defence | :03:13. | :03:15.
Secretary said millions of pounds are being made available to Barrow | :03:16. | :03:19.
so the yard can be prepared to build that successors of Marine. Ht is a | :03:20. | :03:25.
big investment, 300 million, which relies on some 850 construction | :03:26. | :03:29.
jobs, but it also safeguard our ability to build nuclear submarines | :03:30. | :03:33.
into the future. Millions are being spent preparing for the success but | :03:34. | :03:37.
suppose there was no successor? What then for this yard? It is a | :03:38. | :03:42.
political decision, and we respect that. We are focused on the planet | :03:43. | :03:46.
getting ready to build a successor, starting in two to 16. Forttnately, | :03:47. | :03:50.
there is a high degree of cross`party consensus betwedn the | :03:51. | :03:53.
two major parties on the importance of this programme to Britain's | :03:54. | :03:58.
defence. So, assuming the stccessor is built in Barrow, they sax it will | :03:59. | :04:02.
create a next 1000 jobs on this site. So, 1000 jobs here, btt | :04:03. | :04:09.
potentially many hundreds more elsewhere. I am joined now by the | :04:10. | :04:15.
council leader. Presumably, this place thriving pasty be good for the | :04:16. | :04:20.
area? Same absolutely. This project is just so important at a whole | :04:21. | :04:23.
range of levels. It is important for the people who work in the xard at | :04:24. | :04:27.
the moment for job security. It is important for the people who | :04:28. | :04:32.
actually do the construction. There is employment there, there hs | :04:33. | :04:34.
employment for people in thd future who come to build the next level. | :04:35. | :04:39.
Then there is also the impact on the town itself, businesses will pick | :04:40. | :04:45.
up, etc, and when you do a big project like this, I am surd there | :04:46. | :04:50.
are potential investors who are looking at the interview now and | :04:51. | :04:54.
think, what is going on in Barrow? We will have a look. So agahn, there | :04:55. | :04:58.
is potential for development in the town as well. In the 90s, this place | :04:59. | :05:03.
had its problems. They say when the shipyard has a sniffle, Barrow | :05:04. | :05:06.
catches a cold. Presumably when it is in health, that is good news | :05:07. | :05:11.
Absolutely first`class news. Again, there is partnership work going on | :05:12. | :05:14.
in the town which helped to sustain that. We have a working rel`tionship | :05:15. | :05:18.
with the management in the xard and other organisations, so that we | :05:19. | :05:22.
speak with one voice, and that is about building the next gendration | :05:23. | :05:25.
of submarines in Barrow. Thhs all depends on that new generathon of | :05:26. | :05:29.
submarines being commissiondd by whichever government is in power in | :05:30. | :05:32.
2016. Are you as confident `s everybody was today about that? Yes, | :05:33. | :05:39.
in a word. It is necessary to have a successor class, because th`t gives | :05:40. | :05:43.
us our place at the world t`ble it helps us to defend our country | :05:44. | :05:48.
should that be necessary, and so it is just so important to the whole | :05:49. | :05:53.
Britain, not just to Barrow. Thank you very much. So, a Labour council | :05:54. | :05:58.
leader agreeing with a Tory defence minister who was here earlidr today. | :05:59. | :06:02.
I will hand back to you. That is nice to hear, a bitter | :06:03. | :06:05.
political consensus. The jury in the trial of thd Ribble | :06:06. | :06:09.
Valley MP Nigel Evans has hdard that the man who was allegedly assaulted | :06:10. | :06:12.
in the MP's home later described him as a "good egg". The man's | :06:13. | :06:15.
girlfriend told the court she thought Mr Evans had fallen in love | :06:16. | :06:19.
with him. Our Political Editor Arif Ansari joins us from Preston Crown | :06:20. | :06:26.
Court. So what happened tod`y, Arif? Well, they fall of this tri`l, and | :06:27. | :06:33.
Mr Evans arrived here this lorning to listen to the cross`examhnation | :06:34. | :06:36.
of the man who claims he was sexually assaulted while st`ying at | :06:37. | :06:42.
Mr Evans's home in his constituency in Pendleton. It was put to that man | :06:43. | :06:47.
that in fact, he willingly slept with Mr Evans on the sofa. | :06:48. | :06:53.
Absolutely not, he replied, but he admitted that he continued to see Mr | :06:54. | :07:00.
Evans regularly and rationally at Westminster, as he later described | :07:01. | :07:04.
Mr Evans as an all`round good egg and eventually came to view the | :07:05. | :07:08.
incident with a degree of amusement. This afternoon, the | :07:09. | :07:12.
man's girlfriend at the timd gave evidence. She said, I had come to | :07:13. | :07:16.
the conclusion that Nigel w`s in love with him, but not necessarily | :07:17. | :07:24.
prior to this event. She added: Nigel never liked me very mtch. At | :07:25. | :07:27.
that point, Mr Evans appeardd to smile from the dock. I belidve | :07:28. | :07:32.
details emerge of how anothdr MP helped bring these allegations into | :07:33. | :07:37.
the public domain? Ya, that is right. The court heard how the | :07:38. | :07:40.
alleged victim was discussing life at Westminster with Doctor Sarah | :07:41. | :07:46.
Woolston, another Conservathve MP. She apparently seized on a chance | :07:47. | :07:51.
remark, asked to see him later, and then urged him to take thesd matters | :07:52. | :07:56.
to the Commons Speaker, John Bercow, which is exactly what happened. In | :07:57. | :08:00.
court, the defence barrister described events. | :08:01. | :08:11.
He admitted that events werd, in his words, spiralling out of control. Mr | :08:12. | :08:28.
Evans left court this evening still facing nine charges. He denhes them | :08:29. | :08:39.
all. The case continues on Londay. The father of a Merseyside lan who | :08:40. | :08:43.
was among 16 oil workers who died in a helicopter crash are callhng for | :08:44. | :08:45.
the Kraft's operator to be prosecuted. James Edwards from | :08:46. | :08:49.
Fazakerley was one of those who lost their lives when the Super Puma came | :08:50. | :08:53.
down in the North Sea five xears ago. An enquiry has found that the | :08:54. | :08:56.
tragedy could have been prevented. Relatives are now calling for a | :08:57. | :08:59.
criminal investigation. If there is something wrong, you look for it and | :09:00. | :09:04.
fix it, especially a helicopter or any aircraft, for that mattdr. | :09:05. | :09:08.
Unless you have actually fotnd a problem and fixed it. I just can't | :09:09. | :09:12.
understand why there was no prosecution brought. | :09:13. | :09:14.
A Manchester teacher who's charged with terrorism offences has been | :09:15. | :09:17.
remanded in custody by magistrates in London. 29`year`old Jamshed | :09:18. | :09:20.
Javeed from Levenshulme was arrested on Tuesday by police investhgating | :09:21. | :09:24.
links with the war in Syria. He ll appear again at the Old Bailey next | :09:25. | :09:28.
month. Liverpool Football Club has | :09:29. | :09:30.
announced plans for a charity match to mark the 25th anniversarx of the | :09:31. | :09:33.
Hillsborough disaster. Footballers past and present will take place. | :09:34. | :09:37.
The aim is to celebrate the lives of the 96 fans who died. Half the money | :09:38. | :09:41.
raised will go to the Hillsborough Families Support Group and the rest | :09:42. | :09:51.
to the LFC Foundation. For le personally, I will be there to enjoy | :09:52. | :09:55.
the occasion, and I'm sure ` lot of other first`team players will be | :09:56. | :09:59.
there as well to play their part. Let's just hope that we can fill a | :10:00. | :10:03.
stadium and make it a fantastic occasion. | :10:04. | :10:04.
Blackpool Illuminations switch`on will revert back to being a free | :10:05. | :10:07.
event this year. Last year, when Gary Barlow stood in at the last | :10:08. | :10:11.
minute after The Script pulled out, tickets were ?34. Organisers hoped | :10:12. | :10:14.
to make the event profitabld within five years, but the two`day event | :10:15. | :10:21.
lost ?372,000. The father of a Merseyside sailor | :10:22. | :10:25.
who's been in jail in India for five months says the worry is tyhng him | :10:26. | :10:29.
up in knots. Paul Towers, who's originally from Litherland, was one | :10:30. | :10:32.
of six Britons arrested aftdr the Indian coastguard seized an | :10:33. | :10:34.
American`owned vessel carryhng guns and ammunition. The company says the | :10:35. | :10:39.
vessel was protecting merch`nt ships in the Arabian Gulf, and it had | :10:40. | :10:44.
permits for all the arms aboard Here's our Merseyside reporter Andy | :10:45. | :10:50.
Gill. In the five months since his son was | :10:51. | :10:54.
arrested, Don Towers has had one letter from him. At home in | :10:55. | :10:58.
Litherland this afternoon, he spoke of the effect the waiting is having. | :10:59. | :11:06.
It can tie you up in knots, you know? It's had an effect on all of | :11:07. | :11:12.
his family. Everybody is concerned about it. Highly concerned. Paul | :11:13. | :11:17.
Towers was working for a firm providing security for merchant | :11:18. | :11:20.
ships in the Arabian Gulf. The Indian authorities seized the ship | :11:21. | :11:23.
last October when they found 35 rifles and nearly 6,000 rounds of | :11:24. | :11:28.
ammunition aboard. The ship's owners say the Indian coastguard allowed it | :11:29. | :11:31.
to enter the port of Tuticorin to shelter from a cyclone. But Indian | :11:32. | :11:36.
authorities say they intercdpted the vessel and the ammunition h`d not | :11:37. | :11:42.
been properly declared. A total of 35 crewmen are in jail in Chennai | :11:43. | :11:45.
facing charges, including illegally transporting arms. Paul's f`ther | :11:46. | :11:51.
believes he can cope with bding in jail. Any father would worrx. Has it | :11:52. | :12:02.
been difficult? Yes, but I know he is a strong lad. He was in the Army. | :12:03. | :12:07.
All the lads were in the arly. They are all strong lads. In a statement, | :12:08. | :12:09.
the British Foreign Office said Paul's family say the case hs due | :12:10. | :12:24.
before the Indian courts ag`in tomorrow, and they're hoping | :12:25. | :12:30.
there'll be fresh news. Still to come on North West Tonight: | :12:31. | :12:36.
Happy holiday memories for Salford's schoolchildren. But for how much | :12:37. | :12:40.
longer? We report on the calpaign to save the Jam Butty camp. | :12:41. | :12:45.
And, hello, everybody! Manchester tops the European table for selfies. | :12:46. | :12:54.
A court has "regretfully" rtled that two volunteer paramedics from | :12:55. | :12:59.
Manchester can no longer usd sirens and flashing lights to reach | :13:00. | :13:03.
emergencies. Michael Issler and Mark Bamberger were reported by police | :13:04. | :13:07.
officers for using what are known as "blues and twos" to reach the | :13:08. | :13:10.
victims of a road accident on the outskirts of Bury last year. They're | :13:11. | :13:15.
members of a Jewish medical organisation called Hatzolah. | :13:16. | :13:19.
Chances are you might not h`ve heard of them before. Annabel can explain. | :13:20. | :13:27.
Hatzolah takes its name frol the Hebrew word for "rescue" and it s | :13:28. | :13:31.
thought to be the largest volunteer Ambulance Service in the world. It | :13:32. | :13:34.
was founded in the late 1960s in Williamsburg in New York. In the UK, | :13:35. | :13:38.
there are four Hatzolah chapters ` two in London, one in Gateshead and | :13:39. | :13:43.
one in Manchester. Volunteers are trained in emergency medicine. They | :13:44. | :13:47.
cover smaller areas, so say they can get to an emergency faster. | :13:48. | :13:50.
Crucially, though, the servhce claims it's more aware of the | :13:51. | :13:53.
particular cultural needs of the orthodox Jewish community. But it's | :13:54. | :13:59.
the use of blue lights and sirens which has got the Manchester | :14:00. | :14:03.
volunteers into trouble. Sttart Flinders went to meet them. | :14:04. | :14:10.
It's an unlikely looking ambulance ` a Mercedes car. And these are no | :14:11. | :14:17.
run`of`the`mill paramedics. What do you do for a living? Property | :14:18. | :14:21.
Management. So you are not ` professional full`time medical Umag | :14:22. | :14:26.
absolutely not. You do have some medical training? We do. We have | :14:27. | :14:30.
ongoing medical training, rdfresher courses. Michael Issler and Mark | :14:31. | :14:33.
Bamberger are Hatzolah volunteers. It's a Jewish organisation based in | :14:34. | :14:36.
north Manchester. Last October, they were reported by Greater Manchester | :14:37. | :14:39.
Police for using two`tone shrens and flashing blue lights. Originally, | :14:40. | :14:48.
magistrates refused to convhcted two men of any offence, but that has now | :14:49. | :14:51.
been overturned in the High Court. The judge said it is with rdgret | :14:52. | :14:57.
that the volunteer paramedics seeking only to do good, must be | :14:58. | :15:00.
convicted of a criminal offdnce It means the siren and flashing lights | :15:01. | :15:07.
can no longer be used. It is going to cause us issues. Ultimatdly, an | :15:08. | :15:14.
urgent call comes through, baby choking, a heart attack, solething | :15:15. | :15:17.
like that, it can take is a lot longer to get there with tr`ffic | :15:18. | :15:19.
constraints. Greater Manchester Police say: | :15:20. | :15:40.
surely, this sort of facility, the permission to use blue lights and | :15:41. | :15:46.
sirens, has to be limited to those people who are professionals? No. | :15:47. | :15:52.
The blue light since Ireland's allow me to get there in time, or no blue | :15:53. | :15:56.
lights and sirens, but then, we will be late. The volunteers say other | :15:57. | :15:59.
police forces take a differdnt attitude, and they're considering | :16:00. | :16:01.
challenging the court's interpretation of the rules. | :16:02. | :16:08.
The Salford Children's Holiday Camp ` affectionally known as thd "Jam | :16:09. | :16:11.
Butty Camp" ` was set up in Prestatyn almost 80 years ago for | :16:12. | :16:14.
disadvantaged children from the city. These days, children from any | :16:15. | :16:20.
Salford Primary school can go there in return for a donation. The | :16:21. | :16:23.
council says budget cuts me`n they can no longer fund it, but | :16:24. | :16:26.
fundraisers believe it must stay open. Yunus Mulla reports. | :16:27. | :16:40.
Let's also not forget there was another holiday camp in Prestatyn, | :16:41. | :16:46.
opened in 1926. It was the chance to get away from the slums of Salford. | :16:47. | :16:50.
The word Paul was later dropped and a small contribution introdtced | :16:51. | :16:54.
Over the years, it became known as the Jam Butty camp. The children | :16:55. | :17:00.
from Primrose Hill in Salford were planning to go this summer, and had | :17:01. | :17:04.
their deposits ready. They told us we were not going to Prestatyn. I | :17:05. | :17:08.
felt really upset, because H went last year and found it really fun. | :17:09. | :17:13.
The letter we had during thd holidays was the first opportunity | :17:14. | :17:16.
that we knew anything about the camp actually closing. Salford council | :17:17. | :17:22.
needs to make ?97 million worth of budget cuts. They can no longer | :17:23. | :17:26.
afford to give a grant of ?40,0 0 per year to the camp. The council | :17:27. | :17:30.
has to look at every little bit of spending that it makes, and | :17:31. | :17:34.
therefore, it has chosen to cut this particular grant. There are many | :17:35. | :17:37.
other grants that have been cut as well. This is when Nick Abbot and | :17:38. | :17:42.
his supporters coming. A have raised enough to keep it open temporarily, | :17:43. | :17:46.
and are working on a long`tdrm plan. It is a fantastic asset for the | :17:47. | :17:50.
city, and there are tens of thousands of children who normally | :17:51. | :17:54.
never have a holiday, whose first experience is Salford children's | :17:55. | :18:00.
holiday camp. A petition has attracted almost 1400 signatures. We | :18:01. | :18:03.
still live in a world where people are getting food from food banks. We | :18:04. | :18:07.
are not in a world where evdryone has a great income and can `fford a | :18:08. | :18:12.
holiday. The children come from broken homes... Tomorrow, a rescue | :18:13. | :18:16.
plan will be put to Salford council. But will the authority | :18:17. | :18:19.
agreed at the camp is needed as much now as when it was first opdned | :18:20. | :18:26.
Lots of happy memories for people there. Running into the sea in your | :18:27. | :18:30.
pants! Great memories. A sulmer holiday for you. As a kid! | :18:31. | :18:35.
Let's have a look at sport now. Richard is here, and we knew it was | :18:36. | :18:39.
a long shot for Manchester City against Barcelona in the Ch`mpions | :18:40. | :18:42.
League, and it proved to be the case? | :18:43. | :18:44.
Yes, it was always going to be difficult. City are out of the | :18:45. | :18:47.
Champions League after losing 2`1 at the Nou Camp to Barca just ` few | :18:48. | :18:51.
days after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan. The Bltes had | :18:52. | :18:55.
to overturn a 2`0 deficit from the first leg, but conceded aftdr Joleon | :18:56. | :18:58.
Lescott's defensive error w`s punished by Lionel Messi. Vhncent | :18:59. | :19:01.
Kompany got the equaliser, but a minute later, Dani Alves got another | :19:02. | :19:05.
for Barca to give them a 4`0 aggregate win. Some good news at | :19:06. | :19:13.
least for Blues fans ` City seem to be playing down fears that Sergio | :19:14. | :19:16.
Aguero picked up another injury Yes, no definitive statement from | :19:17. | :19:19.
City as yet, but the word after the game was that it was more of a | :19:20. | :19:23.
precautionary measure. And with the Premier League title race now the | :19:24. | :19:26.
focus for the Blues, they'll certainly need their top scorer and | :19:27. | :19:29.
will want to put last night behind them. Not least Pablo Zabaldtta who | :19:30. | :19:33.
after Edin Djeko wasn't awarded a penalty, was sent off for dhssent. | :19:34. | :19:38.
In the Championship, Burnlex led at Birmingham three times but conceded | :19:39. | :19:42.
a last minute equaliser in ` 3` thriller. Dean Marney and Mhchael | :19:43. | :19:45.
Duff scored the first two and Sam Volkes added the third in the 8 th | :19:46. | :19:50.
minute. But Birmingham's on`loan Manchester United striker Fdderico | :19:51. | :19:58.
Macheda levelled the match. Wigan's 1`0 victory over Shdffield | :19:59. | :20:00.
Wednesday boosted their plax`off hopes. Jordi Gomez's late pdnalty | :20:01. | :20:05.
made it seven straight wins in all competitions. Meanwhile, Bl`ckburn | :20:06. | :20:09.
Rovers lost 1`0 at home to Bournemouth. Let's change sports | :20:10. | :20:15.
now. Water polo supplied more north`west | :20:16. | :20:18.
competitors at London 2012 than any other sport. But the future of the | :20:19. | :20:21.
British women's team, which is based in Manchester, is under thrdat. The | :20:22. | :20:24.
team have had their funding withdrawn by UK Sport, which | :20:25. | :20:27.
allocates money to Olympic teams. Stuart Pollitt reports. | :20:28. | :20:33.
Is the future of the British women's water polo team below the | :20:34. | :20:40.
water line? Last month, the team were told their funding was | :20:41. | :20:44.
finished. It was absolutely devastating. No words can ptt into | :20:45. | :20:52.
what I was feeling. I did think it was `` didn't think it was real at | :20:53. | :20:56.
first. The women's team recdived around ?3 million of funding for | :20:57. | :21:01.
London 2012, increase last xear to four and a half million through two | :21:02. | :21:05.
Rio 2016, but a few weeks ago, UK Sport told the team they were | :21:06. | :21:09.
withdrawing the money and they would get nothing at all. You plan your | :21:10. | :21:12.
future based on this funding, and now it is gone? Yes. The Olxmpic | :21:13. | :21:17.
Games was the thing that evdryone wanted to do, and the dream is just | :21:18. | :21:22.
not there any more. Keeping the dream alive depends on winnhng an | :21:23. | :21:27.
appeal UK Sport's decision. A verdict is due next week. It is very | :21:28. | :21:31.
much now an elitist agenda of success, of medals, and | :21:32. | :21:39.
qualification for team sport at the finals of the Olympics. I think we | :21:40. | :21:43.
may need to look at this agdnda we may need to see whether it should | :21:44. | :21:47.
not be widened. All the hours my mum put in getting about 5am to get to | :21:48. | :21:51.
training, going into work l`te, coming out early to get me. It does | :21:52. | :21:57.
not just impact me, but everyone. UK Sport says the impact of its money | :21:58. | :22:01.
is to produce medals, not please mothers, and at the moment, medals | :22:02. | :22:05.
or a long shot for water polo. For this team, just staying afloat is | :22:06. | :22:13.
the goal for now. Took part in one water polo game | :22:14. | :22:17.
once. It was absolutely exh`usting. Thank you very much. | :22:18. | :22:19.
Do you recognise the photo behind us? It was taken during the Oscars | :22:20. | :22:23.
recently and featured a host of A`list film stars. It's the most | :22:24. | :22:27.
famous example yet of the "selfie", a photo you take yourself using your | :22:28. | :22:32.
own camera and an outstretched arm. This is the latest selfie ` which | :22:33. | :22:35.
hasn't taken the social medha networks by storm. What a h`ndsome | :22:36. | :22:45.
bunch! It's the NWT producthon team! Perhaps not quite so glamorous. And | :22:46. | :22:48.
the reason we're talking about selfies is that Time magazine has | :22:49. | :22:51.
named Manchester as Europe's Selfie Capital. So we sent Suzanne Hailey | :22:52. | :22:52.
to find out why. That Oscar selfie, the most | :22:53. | :23:08.
retweeted HR of all time. Sdlf these are the social media trend of the | :23:09. | :23:13.
moment. And nowhere more so than in Manchester. You want to feel good | :23:14. | :23:16.
about yourself, so you put xourself out there. I macro the sexy ones | :23:17. | :23:23.
are... When nature writer do the smile like this as well. It is a | :23:24. | :23:27.
trend really, just to capture the moment. A reasons but the instant | :23:28. | :23:32.
gram pictures tagged as selfie and posted with a location showdd 1 4 | :23:33. | :23:39.
self snappers for every 100,000 people in Manchester. The hhghest in | :23:40. | :23:43.
Europe, and the seventh highest in the world. Closely followed by | :23:44. | :23:47.
image`conscious Milan. We t`ke more Selbys here... I better movd! They | :23:48. | :23:54.
are a bit of fun. I have never taken one. But, of course, you can only | :23:55. | :23:59.
take a selfie if you can work out how. But what is it that makes us | :24:00. | :24:03.
want to take pictures of ourselves and share them with the world? I | :24:04. | :24:07.
think it links to something in social psychology called self | :24:08. | :24:12.
presentation. We always want to portray the most positive ilage we | :24:13. | :24:15.
can, normally, to the peopld around us. The best way of ensuring that | :24:16. | :24:21.
you have the best angle, thd best side, is to do it yourself. But what | :24:22. | :24:28.
makes a selfie? Well, according to one definition, it is a photograph | :24:29. | :24:32.
that one has taken of 1's sdlf, typically taken with a smartphone or | :24:33. | :24:35.
webcam, and uploaded to a social media website. Perhaps someone | :24:36. | :24:39.
should try explaining it to this lady. Recent figures show that over | :24:40. | :24:46.
half of us have now taken a selfie, but perhaps that does not include | :24:47. | :24:49.
those of us who aren't prep`red to admit it. | :24:50. | :24:58.
Here we go. Make sure I get it right. There we are. A live selfie | :24:59. | :25:04.
on North West Tonight! I will put it on Twitter. That will break the | :25:05. | :25:11.
million pound mark. You had a hand in front of your face there. If you | :25:12. | :25:16.
are camera shy, why are you doing this job? That was my pose! You need | :25:17. | :25:23.
to do something a bit different And now, the weather. | :25:24. | :25:29.
We promise a lot of fog this morning, and there was fog to start | :25:30. | :25:33.
with. It was slow to lift, `nd there is more at the same in the next 12 | :25:34. | :25:37.
to 24 hours. Another yellow warning from The Met Office for fog. This | :25:38. | :25:42.
one is valid from 1am until 11am tomorrow morning, so this evening | :25:43. | :25:47.
was at with clear skies initially. The fog begins to spread in from | :25:48. | :25:51.
across the Irish Sea. It will be very tense overnight. Some lissed in | :25:52. | :25:58.
between that, and frost as well Temperatures, you can see, not too | :25:59. | :26:03.
bad, down to three or four Celsius. Tomorrow morning, we start with a | :26:04. | :26:07.
lot of fog again. There could be problems on the road, visibhlity | :26:08. | :26:11.
problems for Brecht was rush hour, and the BBC local radio stations | :26:12. | :26:15.
will keep you up to date through the morning. This is the fog tolorrow | :26:16. | :26:24.
morning. You can see it is right across the region. Not a brhlliant | :26:25. | :26:28.
start, but into the afternoon, that fog begins to lift. Very, vdry | :26:29. | :26:34.
slow. Again, we will see a lot of ploughed around, and for thd first | :26:35. | :26:38.
time in a few days, we will see some spots of rain through the afternoon. | :26:39. | :26:43.
The westerly winds also start to pick up a tad. It won't be | :26:44. | :26:47.
particularly warm tomorrow. 12 or 13 Celsius in the South, but over | :26:48. | :26:52.
Cumbria, just seven or eight Celsius with bits and pieces of rain, so we | :26:53. | :26:58.
had into view weekend hanging on to high pressure. It will bring a lot | :26:59. | :27:03.
of ploughed. We will see sole more rain on Saturday, not particularly | :27:04. | :27:10.
heavy. Disappointing temper`tures, so cloudier, breezy, and as you can | :27:11. | :27:14.
see, cooler over the weekend. Thank you very much. I have Twitter | :27:15. | :27:22.
on my phone. It has not crashed Not yet. It is worth having a look. You | :27:23. | :27:30.
can see why people take Selbys. It is an easy way of quickly sdnding a | :27:31. | :27:34.
picture to family or friends. It would be nice to see other peoples | :27:35. | :27:39.
as well. We have had a few sent in. That is it. Thanks for watching | :27:40. | :27:41.
Good night. | :27:42. | :27:45. |
