murdering 29 people in the Omagh bombing. The Co-Op Bank has said | :00:00. | :00:00.
sorry Good evening. Welcome to North West | :00:00. | :00:08.
Tonight with Roger Johnson `nd Nina Warhurst. Our top story: Rebuilding | :00:09. | :00:11.
his life after being cleared of all sex charges but was it right to | :00:12. | :00:14.
bring the Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans to court? | :00:15. | :00:25.
Career in bits, his well behng destroyed. His position as deputy | :00:26. | :00:29.
speaker gone. We ask the Crown Prosecution Service | :00:30. | :00:32.
whether people in the public eye are being disproportionately targeted. | :00:33. | :00:35.
Also tonight. Crisis over leadership. With annual losses of | :00:36. | :00:38.
one`point`three billion pounds ` where does the Co`Op go frol here? | :00:39. | :00:49.
Mystery over the disappearance of Matthew. He was last seen rtnning | :00:50. | :00:55.
from a pub in the Lake District And I am with fans preparing for | :00:56. | :01:01.
Wembley. Once again. And once again they are confident of upsetting the | :01:02. | :01:02.
odds. And more than the fifth member of | :01:03. | :01:10.
Joy Division. A new film celebrates one of Manchester's most influential | :01:11. | :01:12.
music producers. Friends of the Ribble Vallex MP | :01:13. | :01:29.
Nigel Evans say he's "in bits" following his five week`long trial | :01:30. | :01:34.
at Preston Crown Court. Mr Dvans was cleared yesterday of nine sdx | :01:35. | :01:37.
charges, including rape. Thdre's been intense criticism todax of the | :01:38. | :01:40.
Crown Prosecution Service for pursuing a case that some s`w as | :01:41. | :01:43.
weak. And it's still unclear what the MP's political future is. We'll | :01:44. | :01:53.
hear from the CPS in a moment. First, here's our Political Editor | :01:54. | :01:55.
Arif Ansari. He's been sustained by support and | :01:56. | :02:00.
best wishes. And today Nigel Evans will be considering his futtre after | :02:01. | :02:03.
almost a year of investigathon, prosecution and finally acqtittal. | :02:04. | :02:13.
After the last 11 months I have gone through, nothing will ever be the | :02:14. | :02:16.
same again. He's endured a five week trhal which | :02:17. | :02:20.
his friends say has been devastating. Career in bits. His | :02:21. | :02:28.
well being destroyed. His position as deputy speaker, Don. | :02:29. | :02:33.
So questions for the Crown Prosecution Service. It's their | :02:34. | :02:35.
fourth high profile failure following the cases of actors Andrew | :02:36. | :02:39.
Lancel, Michael Le Vell and Bill Roache. In the Nigel Evans' trial | :02:40. | :02:42.
three of the seven complain`nts told the court they did not support | :02:43. | :02:43.
prosecutions. But they were given no choice. I | :02:44. | :02:52.
asked the MP's solicitor if Mr Evans feels he was unfairly treatdd. He | :02:53. | :03:02.
does. However, he respects the British judicial system and feels if | :03:03. | :03:09.
there are genuine complaints, people ought to come forward. In this case, | :03:10. | :03:15.
he feels he was treated disproportionally because of his | :03:16. | :03:17.
status. His future status depends on voters | :03:18. | :03:21.
and what they made of the trial He should go. Whether he is proven | :03:22. | :03:29.
innocent, it is the stigma. He works hard for the people in Ribble | :03:30. | :03:33.
Valley. I would like to see him continue. | :03:34. | :03:36.
And after more than 20 years as MP, Nigel Evans and his local p`rty must | :03:37. | :03:42.
decide whether to stick togdther. Your brain must be scrambled after | :03:43. | :03:46.
12 months of this and six wdeks trial. It is for him to dechde what | :03:47. | :03:53.
he wants to do. There's a great deal for Nigel Evans | :03:54. | :03:56.
to consider now that he's elerged from what he called "absolute hell". | :03:57. | :04:03.
Earlier I spoke to the Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West, Nazir | :04:04. | :04:06.
Afzal, and I asked him that considering three of the alleged | :04:07. | :04:09.
victims said they didn't believe a crime had been committed ` should Mr | :04:10. | :04:13.
Evans have ever been brought to court? We have dealt with m`ny cases | :04:14. | :04:22.
over the years where victims do not feel they were victims in some way. | :04:23. | :04:26.
The grooming cases, they did not feel like they were victims but we | :04:27. | :04:31.
have to look at all of the circumstances around this event and | :04:32. | :04:36.
we did in this case. The people who made complaints were happy to come | :04:37. | :04:40.
to court. They signed their statements and the evidence was | :04:41. | :04:46.
reviewed, not just by prosecutors. But this was different from | :04:47. | :04:51.
Rochdale. These were people who knew their own minds, they make clear | :04:52. | :04:55.
decisions, one of them said I don't consider myself a victim. I do not | :04:56. | :05:02.
wish for Nigel Evans to be charged. We have many cases where victims | :05:03. | :05:07.
don't want to give evidence. For example, domestic abuse casds. We | :05:08. | :05:12.
present the evidence and it's important to remember the jtdge is | :05:13. | :05:16.
independent. The judge decided the case should go to the jury. This is | :05:17. | :05:22.
the latest of a number of high`profile acquittals. Is there a | :05:23. | :05:29.
danger the reputation of thd CPS is being damaged? Absolutely not. 5% | :05:30. | :05:38.
is the conviction rate. In the same week this case is dealt with, 1 00 | :05:39. | :05:43.
others have been successfully prosecuted. We are doing our job | :05:44. | :05:48.
well. We are not complacent. There will be learning in this case about | :05:49. | :05:54.
how to improve the service. What you say to people who say, the CPS is so | :05:55. | :06:00.
terrified of missing the next Jimmy Savile or the grooming ring that | :06:01. | :06:04.
people in the public eye ard being disproportionally targeted? | :06:05. | :06:09.
Noted a .9% of people would prosecute are not known to `nybody | :06:10. | :06:12.
but their families or the pdrson they have harmed. | :06:13. | :06:18.
Across the board we don't c`re who the claimant is. We look at the | :06:19. | :06:23.
evidence. The evidence that evidence is what drives us. Ultimately we | :06:24. | :06:31.
only allow those cases wherd there is chance of prosecution to go to | :06:32. | :06:38.
court. And on this week's Stnday Politics, Arif will be joindd in the | :06:39. | :06:41.
studio by Mr Evans' friend, the former health minister, Edwhna | :06:42. | :06:44.
Currie. That's BBC One on Stnday at the later than usual time of half | :06:45. | :06:52.
past two. A man from Lancashire ` who stabbed his partner and son to | :06:53. | :06:56.
death ` has launched a legal bid to inherit his victim's estate. Paul | :06:57. | :06:59.
Chadwick killed Lisa Clay and their six`year`old son Joseph in Bolton le | :07:00. | :07:03.
Sands last year. Her family say the claim is "too appalling for words". | :07:04. | :07:05.
Naomi Cornwell reports. The bodies of Lisa Clay and her son | :07:06. | :07:09.
Joseph were found at their home in Bolton le Sands in April last year. | :07:10. | :07:13.
They'd both been stabbed to death. Lisa's partner, Joseph's father Paul | :07:14. | :07:16.
Chadwick was taken to hospital with serious stab wounds. A court later | :07:17. | :07:20.
heard he'd killed them both before turning the knife on himself, but | :07:21. | :07:23.
his plea of not guilty to mtrder was accepted by the Crown after two | :07:24. | :07:27.
psychiatrists agreed that it was a case of diminished responsibility. | :07:28. | :07:30.
He admitted two counts of manslaughter and was sectioned under | :07:31. | :07:34.
the Mental Health Act, to bd held in hospital for an unlimited thme. But | :07:35. | :07:39.
now he's lodged legal papers claiming an inheritance frol Lisa | :07:40. | :07:48.
thought to be worth around ?150 000. The basic rule is if you colmit a | :07:49. | :07:52.
crime you can't profit from the crime. But there is an exception in | :07:53. | :07:58.
the forfeiture act and that is the rule Chadwick is bringing hhs action | :07:59. | :08:04.
under. I hope the court sees in circumstances such as this, whether | :08:05. | :08:08.
murder or manslaughter, there should not be a difference. If you commit a | :08:09. | :08:13.
crime of this severity, there should be no opportunity to profit. | :08:14. | :08:16.
In a statement, Lisa's family have said: | :08:17. | :08:28.
The case is expected to be heard in Manchester later this year. Police | :08:29. | :08:46.
are appealing for information after a 68`year`old man died ` after being | :08:47. | :08:50.
hit by a lorry on the M61 ndar Bolton. It is thought Stephdn Hayes | :08:51. | :08:53.
from Blackpool had been on foot on the northbound carriageway ` after | :08:54. | :08:56.
visiting Rivington Services when he was struck by a lorry early this | :08:57. | :08:59.
morning. Campaigners who lobbied to save the Settle`to`Carlisle railway | :09:00. | :09:02.
have been marking the 25th anniversary of achieving thdir goal. | :09:03. | :09:05.
It had been on the brink of closure following cuts to British R`il in | :09:06. | :09:09.
the 1980s ` but a campaign was launched to stop it from behng shut. | :09:10. | :09:21.
It's been a bad week for thd Manchester`based Co`operative Group. | :09:22. | :09:24.
First the man brought in to revive its fortunes announced he w`s | :09:25. | :09:27.
standing down. And today thd Co`Op bank has announced losses of | :09:28. | :09:30.
?1.3billion. So what's the lood among staff and customers? Our Chief | :09:31. | :09:33.
Reporter, Dave Guest, is here with more. The sun shone in Manchester | :09:34. | :09:40.
today. But dark clouds have been overshadowing the co`operathve | :09:41. | :09:42.
group's shiny headquarters hn the city for some time. Last month the | :09:43. | :09:45.
Chief Executive Euan Sutherland quit saying the organisation was | :09:46. | :09:47.
"ungovernable." This week Lord Myners, the man tasked with making | :09:48. | :09:51.
it governable said he'd be standing down. He'd accused the group's board | :09:52. | :09:53.
of overseeing "breathtakingly value`destructive decisions". Today | :09:54. | :09:59.
the Co`op Bank confirmed it made losses of ?1.3bn last year `nd it | :10:00. | :10:03.
doesn't expect to make a profit this year or next. The bank's | :10:04. | :10:06.
headquarters are in Manchester but it's no longer controlled bx the | :10:07. | :10:09.
co`operative group ` the result of last year's deal to plug a huge hole | :10:10. | :10:17.
in its finances. And between them the two organisations emplox 25 000 | :10:18. | :10:21.
across the region. So how are those employees feeling amid all this | :10:22. | :10:34.
gloomy news? All organisations go through challenges, including Tesco | :10:35. | :10:41.
and Morrisons. Are you confhdent working here? Absolutely. Wd are | :10:42. | :10:47.
high`spirited. What about the future? Yes. The staff showhng a | :10:48. | :10:53.
brave face. But what about the customers? The bank has 4.7 million | :10:54. | :10:58.
of them and today the Chief Executive Niall Booker apologised | :10:59. | :11:00.
for "past failings" that had placed the future of the business so | :11:01. | :11:06.
seriously at risk. So how are those customers feeling ` and do they | :11:07. | :11:11.
still have faith in the bank? I still think they are doing well | :11:12. | :11:18.
Other banks have been in worse situations. It affects people at a | :11:19. | :11:24.
higher level. That's why we don t think it will cause a probldm with | :11:25. | :11:29.
us banking with them. It is disappointing in the context that | :11:30. | :11:33.
they have high moral values on paper. But they do not display them | :11:34. | :11:36.
in public. And the stormy weather isn't over | :11:37. | :11:39.
yet. The co`operative group will publish its results next wedk. The | :11:40. | :11:42.
outgoing chief executive was moved to describe them as ugly. So that | :11:43. | :11:54.
hardly bodes well. The mothdr of a missing student has asked all boat | :11:55. | :11:57.
owners on Windermere to search the lake this weekend for her son. | :11:58. | :12:00.
Matthew Jordan disappeared hn Bowness two weeks ago, after a night | :12:01. | :12:03.
out with friends. The 20`ye`r`old was last seen leaving The Stag's | :12:04. | :12:06.
Head. His parents have been handing out leaflets to help find hhm. | :12:07. | :12:15.
Adrian Pitches reports. Two weeks on and Matthew's parents | :12:16. | :12:21.
are intensifying the search, handing out leaflets and urging boat owners | :12:22. | :12:24.
to launch a coordinated search of the lake this weekend. We are trying | :12:25. | :12:32.
to get as many people or local residents as well to get thdir | :12:33. | :12:36.
boards onto the lake `` boats so many people, kayaks, anything, to | :12:37. | :12:46.
search in the lake as well. Matthew was staying with friends two weeks | :12:47. | :12:52.
ago when he left the Stags head and disappeared. A police sniffdr dog | :12:53. | :12:57.
tracked down a road were busy in the daytime but dark and lonely at | :12:58. | :13:02.
night. Family have been searching for Matthew ever since alongside | :13:03. | :13:06.
hill walkers alerted to his disappearance. People have come | :13:07. | :13:12.
down, done searches, even at night time with the locals, gone back | :13:13. | :13:18.
people have stayed until 2al searching so we cannot belidve it is | :13:19. | :13:23.
two weeks and still nothing but we know our son and so does evdryone | :13:24. | :13:28.
else. He would have been in touch. I can only plead from the bottom of my | :13:29. | :13:34.
heart to everyone, please come forward. I am not bothered, I just | :13:35. | :13:41.
need him home. Hopefully thd family will have answers after the weekend | :13:42. | :13:50.
search. Still to come on North West Tonight. | :13:51. | :13:55.
On song for Wembley. Wigan's Chairman hits the right notds ahead | :13:56. | :14:00.
of the FA Cup semifinal. And the man behind the music. A new | :14:01. | :14:05.
film celebrates one of Manchester's most influential producers. Sport | :14:06. | :14:27.
now and ahead of Wigan's FA Cup semifinal against Arsenal tomorrow | :14:28. | :14:30.
we've sent Richard out to Whgan where the fans are gearing tp for | :14:31. | :14:43.
Wembley. You seem to suggest I rather liked a drink! Yes, this is | :14:44. | :14:52.
an in a beautiful spot outshde Wigan. Quite a few Wigan athletic | :14:53. | :14:59.
fans. Excited to be gay to Wembley. We will chat to them in a moment. | :15:00. | :15:05.
First, a big game at Anfield. Liverpool top of the table. Brendan | :15:06. | :15:10.
Rodgers's side are four points clear. But the blues do havd two | :15:11. | :15:14.
games in hand on both Liverpool and Chelsea. And a win for eithdr side | :15:15. | :15:17.
may well prove to be decisive. They've scored 174 goals between | :15:18. | :15:34.
them this season. But for Lhverpool and Manchester only one goal matters | :15:35. | :15:44.
now. Being champions. Nobodx was expecting us to be where we are We | :15:45. | :15:48.
enjoyed it. Liverpool, with nine straight wins, | :15:49. | :15:53.
have the form. They have thd current manager and players of the lonth | :15:54. | :15:56.
too. But Manchester City have Sergio Aguero back and have the recent | :15:57. | :16:05.
title winning experience. It isn't a bad thing some of us have the | :16:06. | :16:09.
winners medal all ready. We are hungry for the next one. It is all | :16:10. | :16:18.
different circumstances. Wh`t are your feelings? Apprehensive. But we | :16:19. | :16:28.
will win. For Liverpool, ond of the biggest domestic games for ` | :16:29. | :16:32.
decade. The question for both teams is how to handle the magnittde of | :16:33. | :16:36.
the match and the emotion of the occasion? This game is at Anfield, a | :16:37. | :16:44.
special place to play footb`ll. We will unleash the supporters again on | :16:45. | :16:49.
the opponent. It is a difficult place for people to come and play. | :16:50. | :16:58.
An emotional day but they whll win the game. They are capable of | :16:59. | :17:07.
beating anybody here. It is in our hands, no one else's. And after this | :17:08. | :17:10.
game, one of these clubs cotld have at least one hand on the title. | :17:11. | :17:21.
What a game that might be. Once again, underdogs but we've heard | :17:22. | :17:29.
that before. They all said it. They all believed | :17:30. | :17:45.
it. For Wigan fans, it was once in a lifetime moment. Wigan athldtic have | :17:46. | :17:54.
won the FA Cup. A dream that surely would never be repeated. Yot would | :17:55. | :18:01.
not have found many of thesd fans thinking they would be at Wdmbley | :18:02. | :18:05.
for the FA Cup this season but because of the opposition they have | :18:06. | :18:08.
beaten, Manchester city and the pressure is on Arsenal this time at | :18:09. | :18:13.
this lot are full of confiddnce quite a few think the Lasix might do | :18:14. | :18:20.
it again. I am optimistic bdcause Arsenal are under more pressure | :18:21. | :18:26.
I think we will win 2`1. I said to my lad, drink it in. | :18:27. | :18:32.
I feel happy because Arsenal will be under pressure. | :18:33. | :18:41.
# I am from Wigan, me. You `re not dreaming. | :18:42. | :18:44.
That is the chairman in Italian chick video, all part of thd | :18:45. | :18:50.
non`pressure builds up. I don't think he will be nervous. | :18:51. | :18:57.
It is a massive task for us to eliminate a top team out of the | :18:58. | :19:02.
premiership. You never know. In football, things can happen. | :19:03. | :19:08.
The pressure that is on Arsdnal It is a great chance for us and we want | :19:09. | :19:13.
to take the opportunity to go into the final. | :19:14. | :19:19.
Wigan aren't prepared to sign off as FA Cup holders and have shown they | :19:20. | :19:24.
can mix it with the best of them or am I dreaming again? | :19:25. | :19:32.
Lets chat to the fans. Hello, Alison. Will you do it again? | :19:33. | :19:44.
Oh, yes. We beat Man City bdfore. Total confidence. What about you, | :19:45. | :20:00.
Greg? I hope so, Richard. It would be fantastic to be able to do it | :20:01. | :20:08.
again. Ross has the right idea. Everything is looking rosy. It is | :20:09. | :20:16.
your birthday tomorrow. I know. It is my birthday. We always go to | :20:17. | :20:21.
Wembley, I think. You are gdtting used to this. Going to Wembley, | :20:22. | :20:28.
that's right. What will it lean if you can do it again and havd a | :20:29. | :20:34.
chance to win the FA Cup? Alazing. To think we never thought wd would | :20:35. | :20:39.
be going again. No pressure whatsoever. The pressure is on | :20:40. | :20:44.
Arsenal. And on you, it's your birthday. We wish you the bdst. | :20:45. | :20:55.
Cheers. A great achievement if Burnley can get back into the | :20:56. | :20:58.
Premier League which they could do tomorrow if they beat Middldsbrough | :20:59. | :21:01.
and Derby failed to beat Huddersfield. Just one defe`t in the | :21:02. | :21:07.
last 19 Championship games has seen The Clarets move 11 points clear in | :21:08. | :21:11.
the second automatic promothon spot. And with just five games left, | :21:12. | :21:14.
they're very close to booking a return to the Premier Leagud. Good | :21:15. | :21:19.
luck to the clarets. What a fantastic achievement it will be. St | :21:20. | :21:22.
Helens captain Paul Wellens will become the longest`serving player in | :21:23. | :21:25.
Super League history tonight when he leads his team against Castleford. | :21:26. | :21:31.
The 34`year`old will break Keith Senior's appearance record hn his | :21:32. | :21:36.

not sure they believe this time Of course we do! They can't waht. They | :22:49. | :22:57.
might do it again. Back to xou. Go back to Greg. What is he drhnking | :22:58. | :23:03.
out of? It looks like a jar. They were telling me about this. This is | :23:04. | :23:10.
not a Wigan thing. It is a crook village thing. You don't get a | :23:11. | :23:14.
pint, I presume it is applidd. But you get a jar full of ale. @nd I | :23:15. | :23:23.
want one. What a great placd to live. Well done. That has m`de his | :23:24. | :23:29.
Friday night. I might have ` jam jar of wine. Is that allowed? Some say | :23:30. | :23:40.
he was the man behind Tony Wilson, and the world famous Manchester | :23:41. | :23:44.
music scene of the 1990s. Btt not many people have heard of mtsic | :23:45. | :23:46.
producer Martin Hannett. He produced songs for OMD, Paul Young and U , as | :23:47. | :23:51.
well as putting Happy Mondaxs on the musical map. Now, two decadds after | :23:52. | :23:54.
his death, the man from Milds Platting will be remembered in a | :23:55. | :23:57.
documentary about his life. Eno Eruoter reports. | :23:58. | :24:00.
He created what we now know as the trademark Manchester sound. From the | :24:01. | :24:04.
music of Joy Division and Ndw Order, to Buzzcocks and The Stone Roses. | :24:05. | :24:11.
Martin Hannett was Factory's genius in`house producer, musician and | :24:12. | :24:13.
sonic experimenter. He created an audio experience of | :24:14. | :24:30.
Manchester in music. He was fascinated with Trafford Park, | :24:31. | :24:32.
factories in Hollingwood and Chadderton. The sound of thd north, | :24:33. | :24:40.
the sound of Coronation Strdet. Hewitt has produced the fill aptly | :24:41. | :24:43.
titled He Wasn't Just The fhfth Member Of Joy Division from an | :24:44. | :24:46.
archive of 150 hours of intdrviews with fellow musicians and friends. | :24:47. | :24:54.
We did three albums at Strawberry Studios. Martin wasn't convdntional. | :24:55. | :25:01.
He's been recognised for his contribution to the Manchester music | :25:02. | :25:05.
scene. It made a big differdnce and put Manchester on the map. @s one of | :25:06. | :25:09.
the founding directors of F`ctory Records, he was one of Tony Wilson's | :25:10. | :25:13.
greatest assets until they fell out over a lawsuit in 1982. Oh, he was | :25:14. | :25:20.
devastated. He didn't deal with that kind of thing well. He internalised | :25:21. | :25:25.
it. I think it contributed to his premature death. Martin Hannett died | :25:26. | :25:31.
of heart attack in 1991 but his method and his music lives on in the | :25:32. | :25:33.
new film. A different take on the Manchester | :25:34. | :25:49.
music scene. Thank you for watching this evening. We appreciate your | :25:50. | :25:57.
company. I wish I could say the weekend will be nice but it changes. | :25:58. | :26:06.
Everyone is going, oh, no! What do you expect? Today, very nicd. | :26:07. | :26:12.
Through Saturday, a line of whether bringing rain for most of us. By | :26:13. | :26:18.
Sunday, a bit of rain for Ctmbria and parts of Lancashire that it | :26:19. | :26:23.
should be dry. There is clotd moving in everywhere really. It is spilling | :26:24. | :26:32.
down from the North. Further south, more chance of breaks in thd cloud | :26:33. | :26:37.
cover so in theory temperattres could fall to two or three degrees. | :26:38. | :26:44.
I think it'll be five or six degrees but we need cloud cover. Tolorrow | :26:45. | :26:50.
morning, a North South Divide. Further south, brighter skids could | :26:51. | :26:55.
be. Further north, the weather front pushing cloud cover and spilling in | :26:56. | :27:02.
everywhere. You can see the Isle of Man and Cumbria get it first. It is | :27:03. | :27:06.
moving relatively quickly so the good news is there will be clearer | :27:07. | :27:12.
weather behind it. It does fall apart. The breeze still gusting | :27:13. | :27:19.
temperatures around 12 or 13. Brighter skies behind. Sund`y, not | :27:20. | :27:25.
bad, mostly dry and fairly fine at times. You are tempering it now | :27:26. | :27:31.
Fairly all right. After everyone groaned. You do complain regularly. | :27:32. | :27:39.
A jam jar of wine. A vodka `nd tonic! We are classy. Thank you for | :27:40. | :27:45.
watching. Goodbye. Will you feel nervous | :27:46. | :28:14.
when this is unveiled? In 2013, the public voted for | :28:15. | :28:14.
