The evening. Manchester United are refusing to comment on the future of

manager David Moyes, followhng widespread reports that he hs about

to be sacked. Good evening. The 50`year`old Scot is said to have

lost the support of the club's owners, the Glazer family, following

yesterday's defeat at Everton. Moyes has been under pressure following a

string of disastrous results which have seen the club fail to pualify

for next season's Champions League. Elaine Dunkley reports.

Despite yesterday's two`nil defeat at Everton, a match which hhs old

club won with almost embarr`ssing ease, David Moyes was last night

still talking about his plans for next season. But this afternoon

several national newspapers reported that United's owners, the Glazer

family, had finally run out of patience with the Scot. We would try

to make sure we get the right things in place for next season and get a

better chance of competing near the top of the league. Outside Old

Trafford, there was little surprise among United's fans. We havd not won

enough. Games and trophies this season, unfortunately. Watching the

game against Everton, there was no shape and balance, it just seemed

gutless. I feel sorry for hhm but I am happy because now we can get a

better manager and United c`n be more successful like they usually

are. Moyes became United manager only 11

months ago, when Sir Alex Fdrguson suddenly announced his retirement,

after more than 26 years. Shr Alex personally approved Moyes as his

successor. But following Brhtain's most successful manager was always

going to be tough. Under Ferguson, United won 38 trophies, including 13

Premier League titles. Sincd Moyes arrived from Everton, United have

suffered a sudden and shockhng demise, slumping to seventh in the

League. A 30`year`old man is in a critical

condition after a serious assault in Liverpool city centre. Detectives

believe the victim was attacked by a group of men in St Peter's Square,

off Seel Street, at about 4`m this morning. His injuries suggest he was

stabbed, and he has undergone emergency surgery. Police are

checking CCTV, and have stepped up patrols.

A sell`out crowd at Anfield has watched some of Liverpool's

greatest`ever players play ` charity match in honour of the 96 f`ns who

died at Hillsborough. Robbid Fowler scored twice, as a side man`ged by

Kenny Dalglish drew two`all with a team managed by Gerard Houllier

Among the others taking part were Michael Owen, Ian Rush, John

Aldridge, and Steve McManam`n. The Liverpool comedian John Bishop

missed a late penalty. It is club legends and playdrs who

have played over the last 20 years and it is not just going to be

Liverpool fans, it will be dveryone hoping for one goal. It is just to

remember and I do not think anybody will ever forget. The familhes will

not and the fans will not and I think it is important.

Burnley are celebrating prolotion to the Premier League. Goals from

Ashley Barnes and Michael Khghtly earned them a two`nil victory over

Wigan. It means the Clarets return to the top flight after an `bsence

of four years. Brilliant! Absolutely! Great goals.

Premiership class. We are staying up there now and I think we have a

manager that will keep us up there. Absolutely amazing, fantasthc.

Come on, Burnley! Elsewhere in the Championshhp,

Blackburn Rovers won 4`2 at Birmingham and Scott Dobie rescued a

point for Blackpool, who sthll remain in the bottom three. In

League One, goalless in all`out local matches, apart from Preston,

who put five past Shrewsburx. North End already secure a play`off pace.

Crewe and Tranmere are both just a point above the relegation zone

In League Two, Rochdale camd from behind to boost their promotion

chances to chances with a 2`1 win at Bristol Rovers. Fleetwood bdat

Wycombe 1`nil. Morecambe lost at Hartlepool, Accrington went down at

Southend and Bury lost at York. In today's Super League acthon,

Salford lost at Leeds by 32 points to four, Widnes beat Saints for only

the second time in the Super League, winning by 40 points to 26. Wigan

thrashed Bradford 84`6, and Warrington lost at Castleford by 40

points to six. Cricket, and Warwickshire h`ve

easily overhauled Lancashird 's first innings on des two at Old

The RSPB says three eggs have been laid at an undisclosed location in

the city centre. The male bird can usually bd seen

perching around Manchester City centre so he uses the Arndale Centre

and particularly the B! It hs the 11th year peregrines have bden

spotted here and thanks to ` webcam, anybody can watch the femald bird in

debating at a secret location in the city centre `` incubating eggs.

As the chicks start to grow, the action gets exciting. Since the bird

started breeding, they have successfully raised a total of 9

chicks and the charity hopes it will be converted by the end of the

summer. `` it will become 32.

Time for the weather. Hardly a cloud in the sky. Hn the

sunshine, daytime temperatures have been increasing and along the

The day has ended in a bang with places, some thunderstorms developed
