Through Sunday and inch or two inches of rain, gales are possible

:00:00.:00:40.

Good evening. Welcome to North West Tonight with Roger Johnson and Beccy

:00:41.:00:42.

Meehan. Our top story: Keep calm or face the consequences. Police warn

:00:43.:00:45.

Gaza protestors ahead of weekend gatherings. The activists have been

:00:46.:00:47.

warned to behave when they gather in Manchester tomorrow. Also tonight: A

:00:48.:00:50.

near miss with an exploding e`cigarette and a fresh warning

:00:51.:00:52.

after a man dies in a Merseyside house fire. Sailing into dangerous

:00:53.:00:55.

waters. The story to the Fleetwood Trawlers, requisitioned to fight in

:00:56.:00:58.

the First World War. And filled with pride. Burnley's only dry dock is

:00:59.:01:01.

open for business again thanks to the hard work of four enthusiasts.

:01:02.:01:04.

Traders in one of Manchester's most upmarket

:01:05.:01:07.

shopping streets are bracing themselves for large demonstrations

:01:08.:01:08.

this weekend by supporters from both sides of the conflict in Gaza.

:01:09.:01:17.

The council say that the protests are putting jobs at risk. But the

:01:18.:01:26.

protesters say it is important voices are heard. What is a scene

:01:27.:01:31.

like at King Street at the moment? You can probably see that it is

:01:32.:01:36.

reasonably quiet. It has been a low key affair this afternoon, with

:01:37.:01:43.

protesters on both sides of the Gaza debate. Loki and low numbers but

:01:44.:01:47.

both sides very keen to make their arguments very forcibly. `` low

:01:48.:01:54.

key. It is a subject that causes bitter divisions. What is wrong with

:01:55.:02:03.

Israel? What is right with Israel? Those divisions are here on the

:02:04.:02:07.

streets of Manchester today. Israel don't seem to be listening to our

:02:08.:02:13.

protest and the governments are not taking action so it is time

:02:14.:02:16.

people to rise up and do something. I think we have a moral duty to make

:02:17.:02:20.

sure that those people who bring harm and suffering to

:02:21.:02:26.

Manchester are not allowed to do that. Pro`Palestinian protesters say

:02:27.:02:29.

this cosmetics shop buys stock from Israel so it makes money for Israel

:02:30.:02:35.

and therefore they say it should be boycotted. The Israeli products

:02:36.:02:39.

bolster the Israeli economy. For those working inside, this has

:02:40.:02:45.

become a daily ritual. We will never close down because of this on

:02:46.:02:49.

principle. Not just us. Every shop in this street has been affected. He

:02:50.:02:53.

is right. Larger gatherings at weekends have attracted far more

:02:54.:02:58.

protesters from both sides. At this fashionable street in the heart of

:02:59.:03:03.

Manchester say they are suffering as a result. I think we are largely

:03:04.:03:06.

frustrated. The protesters not be happening in King Street but in a

:03:07.:03:12.

neutral area like near the town hall, near Piccadilly Gardens. Do

:03:13.:03:16.

you think the Israeli Government is watching what is going on at King

:03:17.:03:21.

Street and taking notice? The only impact of these demonstrations week

:03:22.:03:26.

in and week out is to lose jobs in Manchester. The police say

:03:27.:03:29.

do all they can to facilitate peaceful protesting but with

:03:30.:03:34.

substantial numbers expected over the weekend here, they say they

:03:35.:03:37.

do anything necessary to uphold the law and prevent disorder. Clearly I

:03:38.:03:43.

will not talk about the tactics we will be employing

:03:44.:03:48.

and coming weeks. Does there come a point where you

:03:49.:03:54.

and force them to disperse? That is a sort of thing we

:03:55.:03:59.

so King Street is bracing itself for another unpredictable

:04:00.:04:02.

Nobody is quite sure what will happen here tomorrow. The City

:04:03.:04:04.

Council is keen to stress Street and Manchester is open for

:04:05.:04:09.

business keen to stress they will do their

:04:10.:04:14.

utmost to uphold will take any action necessary to do

:04:15.:04:20.

so. Protesters on both sides keen Thank you. We will follow those

:04:21.:04:27.

protests on the bulletins this weekend.

:04:28.:04:28.

A man has died in Wirral after an explosion believed to have been

:04:29.:04:31.

Merseyside's Fire Service says it's the ninth incident involving

:04:32.:04:34.

Firefighters have been visiting homes in Wallasey this afternoon to

:04:35.:04:38.

warn smokers they may be in danger without realising it.

:04:39.:04:40.

Because they produce vapour rather than smoke, they are billed as

:04:41.:04:54.

cleaner than traditional cigarettes and some believe they are useful

:04:55.:04:58.

step on the way to giving up smoking altogether.

:04:59.:05:02.

electronic they need to be charged like a mobile phone and

:05:03.:05:07.

e`cigarette was on charge in this pub

:05:08.:05:12.

up. Now e`cigarettes are being blamed for the death

:05:13.:05:18.

Wallasey. The body of the 62`year`old man was found in a

:05:19.:05:20.

bedroom at his home. Fire investigators believe an

:05:21.:05:23.

had exploded while on charge, tearing into a pipe from an oxygen

:05:24.:05:27.

machine the man relied on to him breathe. Electronic cigarettes

:05:28.:05:32.

are increasingly popular with sales rising by 30% every year. Police in

:05:33.:05:36.

Merseyside have now been called to nine incidents involving

:05:37.:05:42.

e`cigarettes. The fire service is now including warnings about

:05:43.:05:44.

e`cigarettes on community visits. Make sure you charge them during the

:05:45.:05:50.

day. Don't leave them charging overnight. Buy them from a reputable

:05:51.:05:57.

retailer, always use the charger plug that comes with it and check it

:05:58.:06:03.

has the CE mark on it as well, the safety mark. Manufacturers are

:06:04.:06:06.

calling for a sense of proportion. It is really important that people

:06:07.:06:10.

use the supplied charger and follow instructions. Batteries should never

:06:11.:06:14.

be left unattended while charging. As the fire service has pointed

:06:15.:06:19.

out, this pales into insignificance compared to the number of fires

:06:20.:06:21.

caused by tobacco cigarettes. This is not an e`cigarette problem but a

:06:22.:06:33.

battery problem. This was the damage done to a house in

:06:34.:06:38.

faulty charge was used for an e`cigarette. Smokers are being

:06:39.:06:40.

A health regulator has found no evidence human tissue samples were

:06:41.:06:41.

sold to drug companies by Manchester's Christie Hospital

:06:42.:06:43.

The Human Tissue Authority investigated after concerns were

:06:44.:06:44.

raised in the House of Commons by the North West MP Rosie Cooper.

:06:45.:06:47.

The regulator says it's confident the Christie's procedures

:06:48.:06:49.

The National Crime Agency has released images of

:06:50.:06:57.

a man they believe was involved in an operation to smuggle 45 kilos of

:06:58.:07:00.

The man, who's thought to be from the North

:07:01.:07:04.

West, was photographed loading the suspect sacks at Liverpool docks.

:07:05.:07:10.

Rail union officials held a demonstration outside

:07:11.:07:11.

The Government is currently consulting on services

:07:12.:07:14.

and routes operated by Northern Rail and First TransPennine Express.

:07:15.:07:17.

The RMT fears a loss of direct rail services from Blackpool, no guards

:07:18.:07:19.

The Government says it's about delivering benefits for passengers.

:07:20.:07:29.

11 libraries in Liverpool could close as part of council plans

:07:30.:07:31.

The Library service needs to reduce its budget by a quarter.

:07:32.:07:35.

Among those that could be at risk are Wavertree, Fazakerley

:07:36.:07:38.

Everyone knows fracking is a controversial issue,

:07:39.:07:46.

Now there are calls for up to 12 councillors at Fylde

:07:47.:07:50.

Borough Council to stand down after they declared a prejudicial or

:07:51.:07:53.

Three were given payments by a firm conducting a geophysical survey.

:07:54.:07:57.

The other nine sit on committees which have accepted

:07:58.:07:59.

They're adamant they haven't done anything wrong.

:08:00.:08:01.

Here's our environment correspondent Judy Hobson.

:08:02.:08:16.

Two and a half years ago, Councillor Trevor Fidler allowed a company onto

:08:17.:08:26.

his land to survey the rock beneath. A macro that came through the

:08:27.:08:32.

vegetable garden. They said it was a safety matter because the coastline

:08:33.:08:37.

had just experienced two earth tremors and they were offering him

:08:38.:08:42.

?150 for the inconvenience. He said no problem. It has since emerged

:08:43.:08:48.

that company was working for Cuadrilla who plan to carry out

:08:49.:08:52.

fracking in the area. Last week there was a council vote on

:08:53.:08:56.

and campaigners working in the industry had asked councillors to

:08:57.:08:58.

declare a personal or prejudicial interest. Trevor did and now

:08:59.:09:03.

something that he and others should have done so sooner. At that time

:09:04.:09:09.

Cuadrilla had never been heard of and fracking had never been referred

:09:10.:09:12.

to. It was simply a scientific and therefore why should one make

:09:13.:09:17.

500 households allowed seismic testing on their land in return to

:09:18.:09:24.

cash, including Councillor Tommy Threlfall who holds the portfolio

:09:25.:09:29.

for the environment. He also said he did not realise the company was

:09:30.:09:32.

connected with Cuadrilla and declared a prejudicial interest

:09:33.:09:38.

before the vote. Neither think they have done anything wrong and others

:09:39.:09:41.

disagree. Where is the trust? How can we trust them to make decisions

:09:42.:09:47.

with any influence when they have money in their pockets from

:09:48.:09:49.

Cuadrilla? Nine other councillors said they were members of community

:09:50.:09:54.

groups that received money from Cuadrilla and another councillor

:09:55.:10:00.

said she was also paid for tests on her land and said it was done in

:10:01.:10:04.

good faith. It over the borough. If I had known

:10:05.:10:11.

then what I know now, I have allowed it. The whole episode

:10:12.:10:17.

has outraged anti`fracking groups. I have been councillors for a very

:10:18.:10:25.

long time and they know you have to borough council can't approve

:10:26.:10:31.

fracking, that is down to the County intense scrutiny over the coming

:10:32.:10:36.

months. North West exports to India have

:10:37.:10:38.

increased 15% in the last two years. It's a huge opportunity

:10:39.:10:38.

and no wonder. By next year, the size of its

:10:39.:10:40.

wealthy new middle class is expected to exceed the population of the UK,

:10:41.:10:42.

Germany, Italy and France combined. So as part of our Export Or Die

:10:43.:10:45.

series, we're going to follow one company as it sets out on its Indian

:10:46.:10:48.

adventure. Here's our economics correspondent

:10:49.:10:50.

Jayne McCubbin to introduce them. We start this programme is a

:10:51.:11:09.

newsflash. Alcohol consumption in the UK is going down. Binge drinking

:11:10.:11:15.

Britain is getting clean? Has anybody checked this script? The

:11:16.:11:23.

truth is that Britain as a whole has been drinking less and less of this

:11:24.:11:28.

every year since 2002. For this man, that is a problem. I think consumers

:11:29.:11:33.

are much more aware of alcohol intake. There is also the health

:11:34.:11:37.

thing and the Government actively targeting us to make sure people

:11:38.:11:41.

don't drink as much alcohol any more. No wonder Halewood

:11:42.:11:48.

International has to become more international. So the next step is

:11:49.:11:56.

here. Give me an idea of why you are excited about this and the scale of

:11:57.:12:02.

it. I think the scale is the big one. One. Alcohol might be banned in

:12:03.:12:07.

parts of India but boozing is booming. Admittedly many people

:12:08.:12:17.

don't drink but many do. There is a huge drinking consumption in India.

:12:18.:12:22.

They are super`confident and no wonder. Exporting has already

:12:23.:12:27.

transformed their business. When we started two years ago it was less

:12:28.:12:35.

than 2%. Over the next four years it will be about 30%. Amazing. Can you

:12:36.:12:39.

be blas? about India? I would like to. There

:12:40.:12:45.

be done. Can the exporters crack the overseas market? No idea! We will

:12:46.:12:51.

find out over the next 12 months. And more from that story later in

:12:52.:12:55.

the year, no doubt. But can Blackburn make a winning

:12:56.:12:56.

start as the new football season The restored dry dock,

:12:57.:13:01.

where they're hoping business will The First World War was

the first total war. Every economic sinew was yoked to

the cause of victory and the Trawler fleets

:13:16.:13:17.

and their crews were commandeered by the Royal Navy and put to work

:13:18.:13:20.

protecting vital shipping lanes. In the last of our current

:13:21.:13:23.

World War One At Home series, Annabel Tiffin tells the story

:13:24.:13:26.

of the Fleetwood trawlers. Robert Butler, drowned aged just 20

:13:27.:13:48.

while trying to clear a mine off the Scottish coast on a Fleetwood

:13:49.:13:52.

trawler. No glory in this death, no medals, no heroism, not a death to

:13:53.:13:57.

inspire a poem or heroic monument. A victim from a forgotten corner of

:13:58.:14:05.

the First World War's killing grounds. Here in Fleetwood there are

:14:06.:14:10.

no trawlers left. The cod wars and EU quotas saw to that. Just

:14:11.:14:15.

reminders of the fishing past dotted around the channel. 100 years ago

:14:16.:14:20.

this entire area would have been crammed, and in 1914, virtually the

:14:21.:14:26.

entire fleet of 111 was signed up to the war effort. Fleetwood had ships

:14:27.:14:32.

and experienced sailors. 100 trawler men were already part of the Naval

:14:33.:14:39.

reserve. The day before war was declared, they got the call, landed

:14:40.:14:45.

their catch and sailed away. Looking across to the deepwater channel,

:14:46.:14:51.

where the big trawlers that became the minesweepers and the First World

:14:52.:14:56.

War sailed in and out of the port. This local historian

:14:57.:15:01.

the Fleetwood trawlers did was a vital and underappreciated role.

:15:02.:15:04.

They were helping to keep food Lifeline is open, make sure ships

:15:05.:15:11.

were protected in our coastal waters, which was a vital part of

:15:12.:15:16.

the war. Only a tidal proportion of ships passing around the British

:15:17.:15:23.

waters were lost relatively, largely due to the efforts of these men.

:15:24.:15:29.

There were fears about the town's survival but fishing was still a

:15:30.:15:35.

vital industry. Replacement trawlers were built and retired men put back

:15:36.:15:38.

to work. My own great`grandfather was one of these men. He came and

:15:39.:15:44.

retired to the Fleetwood area and he was asked when war broke out if he

:15:45.:15:53.

sure that the ships were kept at sea. Of the 111 Fleetwood trawlers

:15:54.:15:58.

conscripted, 20 were lost. Robert's memorial is in the church at the dog

and his nephew and niece still live here. `` the church in the village.

The whole family were fishing for shrimps and shellfish and it was all

:16:19.:16:21.

away. They were looking for and he went down and they lowered

the boat to go in but it capsized. He went overboard and basically all

it is part of our family. The latest in our World War I films. You can

season is finally here. Blackburn Rovers get

us under way tonight. Some consternation from viewers that

:17:18.:17:29.

the football season is already here even though it is summer. Dumb

:17:30.:17:35.

people will be delighted and other people think there has been no

for Blackpool this season. I want to see the North West

:18:40.:18:48.

clubs higher in the league. But seeing the negativity around the

:18:49.:18:53.

clubs, the supporters aren't happy and it might take time for the

players to gel and suddenly you are A poor start and

a strong finish was last season's Manager Dougie Freedman says he now

has a very good and honest group I don't think they will be

relegation candidates but I can't see them being

:19:10.:19:14.

in the top six positions. They are

:19:15.:19:17.

a club that should be because of the Premier League pedigree they

:19:18.:19:20.

have had over the last ten years but I think this might be a stable

period for Bolton this season. Last season was one to remember

for Wigan with their first journey in European competition and another

great run in the FA Cup. Although despite momentum going

:19:32.:19:36.

into the play`offs under Uwe Rosler They have a lot

of quality within that squad anyway and I think now with the signings

they have made, they are going to be Overall I think they will be

FA Cup winners Arsenal, a useful Maybe both teams don't arrive at our

:20:15.:20:36.

best moment because both teams have a lot of players just arriving from

:20:37.:20:40.

the World Cup but I think it will be both teams to win it and we will try

:20:41.:20:47.

to. So, City off to Wembley and they

:20:48.:20:48.

could soon be followed there by two Warrington and Widnes will meet

:20:49.:20:51.

there in the Challenge Cup final if they can win their respective

:20:52.:20:56.

semis this weekend. But while one of those clubs is well

:20:57.:20:58.

used to trophy glory, the other has been long starved of

:20:59.:21:01.

silverware, as Ian Haslam reports. Warrington know all

:21:02.:21:03.

about winning the Challenge Cup. Under coach Tony Smith they have

:21:04.:21:06.

done it three times What happened in the past is

:21:07.:21:08.

in the past and it is what we do It should be a good battle

:21:09.:21:12.

between two very good teams. Widnes used to know all

:21:13.:21:17.

about winning the Challenge Cup but the one`time kings have not done

:21:18.:21:19.

so for 30 years. It is building the cultures

:21:20.:21:22.

and philosophies of this club, understanding our history,

:21:23.:21:25.

how great this club was On Sunday it will be a 12,000

:21:26.:21:27.

sell`out at Leigh Sports Village It is special this club,

:21:28.:21:36.

the success we have had, Once you get a taste for it,

:21:37.:21:44.

you have a craving for it. For Wolves that marks familiar

:21:45.:21:53.

territory, for Widnes it marks progress, and since returning

:21:54.:21:55.

from Super League last year they have gone from finishing bottom to

:21:56.:21:57.

being play`offs contenders. To be in the top eight in the

:21:58.:22:01.

Challenge Cup in our third season, I'm not sure how many rugby league

:22:02.:22:07.

pundits would have predicted that. We are quite happy with

:22:08.:22:11.

our progression. Of course both sides know what would

:22:12.:22:14.

await them in the final, each other. Some are not willing to

:22:15.:22:18.

tempt fate too much. Wembley hasn't been spoken

:22:19.:22:21.

of ones and hopefully if we can get the result this week

:22:22.:22:25.

we can start to mention the W word. There are going to be nervous

:22:26.:22:30.

but they are good. Win, and they might struggle

:22:31.:22:35.

to contain their excitement. I hope that happens because it would

:22:36.:22:55.

be a cracking final. Yes, and the rest of the football on Monday

:22:56.:22:59.

night's programme. Thank you. It's taken months of sweat

:23:00.:23:00.

and tears but an important part of Burnley's waterways history is

:23:01.:23:02.

back in business. The Bank Hall dry dock fell

:23:03.:23:04.

into ruin after the colliery closed but it's now been lovingly restored

:23:05.:23:07.

to its former glory. This dog was once at the heart of

:23:08.:23:22.

the nation but when the coal and textiles industries disappeared, so

:23:23.:23:31.

did the men who worked here. `` dock. Almost half a century on, they

:23:32.:23:37.

are repairing boats here once again as part of the restoration. It was

:23:38.:23:42.

my only chance to do something like this in my life. It was 70 feet long

:23:43.:23:49.

and 40 feet wide and six feet deep. Mud, dirt, shopping trolleys,

:23:50.:23:53.

everything. Everything you could imagine was in the bottom. It was a

:23:54.:23:58.

dumping ground. We have been on board for the last 12 years. Les

:23:59.:24:06.

built his own boat and we wanted to paint boats and there was

:24:07.:24:12.

do them. This wasn't what we wanted because we just wanted to

:24:13.:24:17.

odd boat. A nice way to fill your time. And then this was just

:24:18.:24:20.

marvellous. All they needed business plan and once that was in

:24:21.:24:30.

place, the council agreed to lease the land. The dried dock is

:24:31.:24:34.

remaining link to the industrial past of this area. There were once

:24:35.:24:39.

22 canal boats every day taking coal station. This is the first canal

:24:40.:24:46.

boat they have repaired and there should be more. Three days down to

:24:47.:24:52.

Wigan and three up to Skipton. If somebody once their boat back in,

:24:53.:24:56.

this couldn't be better. Although the dock is still a work in

:24:57.:25:01.

progress, waterways around Burnley are still open for business once

:25:02.:25:07.

again. That was a real Labour of love. Great work. We have had some

:25:08.:25:15.

apocalyptic weather forecasting. Is it going to happen? A weekend of two

:25:16.:25:21.

halves. Still not firm on the detail for Sunday. On Sunday there is doubt

:25:22.:25:29.

about the rain for our part of the world and let me

:25:30.:25:34.

Saturday is not too bad with fine spells of sunshine.

:25:35.:25:37.

hurricane Bertha coming through the endless channel

:25:38.:25:43.

of the day we could see the remnants of it moving in from late morning

:25:44.:25:49.

onwards. Some showers turned up today, not as widespread as we

:25:50.:25:53.

thought, but where they have turned up they have been belters with

:25:54.:25:58.

localised flooding and torrential downpours. They were relatively

:25:59.:26:02.

short lived. Some of them firing in Cumbria but they will travel North

:26:03.:26:06.

over the next couple of the theme tonight is settled and

:26:07.:26:15.

quiet. If you are dog walking last night, working or going out,

:26:16.:26:23.

and fresh and that is because of the westerly winds.

:26:24.:26:32.

the difference. Really it could be eight and

:26:33.:26:39.

degrees. And Saturday I would love to

:26:40.:26:48.

at any point. That is all the risk is and many places

:26:49.:26:55.

comes and goes, so not wall`to`wall sunshine and we

:26:56.:27:01.

breeze. Not boiling hot but a top temperature in the afternoon of 21.

:27:02.:27:04.

21 is the magic figure of 70 Fahrenheit. On Sunday, the

:27:05.:27:07.

weather will be in southern parts of the country

:27:08.:27:13.

us, we could see strong winds and heavy rain.

:27:14.:27:17.

way in terms of weather forecasting so we bring you the very latest at

:27:18.:27:26.

10:30pm. `` 24`38 hours. A weekend of two halves? Shias after your job!

:27:27.:27:38.

We will have a job swap. `` she is after your job! Enjoy your weekend.

:27:39.:27:40.

Goodbye.
