tonight's BBC News at Ten. That's it. Now on BBC One we | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to North West Tonight, with Annabel Tiffin | :00:00. | :00:00.
The wife of a police officer, who was left in a coma | :00:00. | :00:10.
after a road accident, asks a judge to let him die. | :00:11. | :00:14.
Lindsey Briggs says it's what he would have wanted, | :00:15. | :00:16.
13 years after she disappeared, could this CCTV | :00:17. | :00:27.
And if anyone, anyone has any information | :00:28. | :00:32.
at all, no matter how small, I would urge them to please, | :00:33. | :00:35.
A new play highlights the issues facing mums and dads | :00:36. | :00:43.
And the story of a former m`rine, almost killed in Afghanistan, | :00:44. | :00:50.
who's now a world class rugby league referee. | :00:51. | :01:06.
In July last year Paul Briggs was on his way to work | :01:07. | :01:08.
as a Merseyside Police officer when he was knocked | :01:09. | :01:11.
Now a judge has been asked to decide whether doctors should stop | :01:12. | :01:17.
His wife Lindsey says it's what he would have wanted. | :01:18. | :01:21.
They say there is a chance his condition could improve. | :01:22. | :01:26.
Here's Lindsey Prosser with the background to this case. | :01:27. | :01:31.
Paul Briggs was hit by a car as he was travelling to work | :01:32. | :01:34.
He suffered a severe brain injury and is being cared | :01:35. | :01:38.
Today's hearing was heard at the Court of Protection, | :01:39. | :01:42.
which deals with matters relating to be people unable to make | :01:43. | :01:44.
The court was told that doctors treating Mr Briggs | :01:45. | :01:50.
and an independent doctor have stated that he's in a minim`lly | :01:51. | :01:53.
conscious state, whilst another independent doctor believes that | :01:54. | :01:58.
The court heard that Mrs Briggs was distressed to learn that | :01:59. | :02:00.
without a written record of what her husband would have | :02:01. | :02:03.
intended in this situation, she couldn't stop him receiving | :02:04. | :02:05.
care she believes he wouldn't have have consented to. | :02:06. | :02:07.
Doctors looking after Paul Briggs believe there's potential | :02:08. | :02:09.
Lindsey Briggs says he'll continue to fight for her husband's | :02:10. | :02:14.
A judgment is expected later this month. | :02:15. | :02:31.
it's very rare in cases for like this for people to be named. | :02:32. | :02:35.
Earlier, I spoke to Lindsey Briggs's solicitor, Mathieu Culverhouse, | :02:36. | :02:37.
and asked him why she wanted her husband's life-support | :02:38. | :02:39.
Well, this past year has clearly been an extremely difficult time for | :02:40. | :02:43.
Lindsey Briggs and for Paul Briggs' family. | :02:44. | :02:46.
And they just want what is best for Paul. | :02:47. | :02:48.
Lindsey Briggs is firmly of the view that the | :02:49. | :02:51.
withdrawal of treatment is in Paul's best interests, | :02:52. | :02:53.
given his previously expressed wishes and feelings and | :02:54. | :02:55.
And that is a key point, isn't it, that you've | :02:56. | :02:59.
Because my next question was going to be, had he ever | :03:00. | :03:03.
expressed a view on a situation like this, | :03:04. | :03:05.
while he was fit and well, as to what he would | :03:06. | :03:08.
And, from what you are saying, he had. | :03:09. | :03:11.
Well, there is such a thing as a formal written advance decision, | :03:12. | :03:14.
which someone with the mental capacity to make decisions can enter | :03:15. | :03:19.
Unfortunately, this is not ` case where there is such an advance | :03:20. | :03:23.
But we are presenting to the court a case | :03:24. | :03:27.
that, given the expressed wishes of Paul Briggs, | :03:28. | :03:32.
wife and to others, that given his current | :03:33. | :03:35.
situation he would not want | :03:36. | :03:37.
Doctors, though, say he's in this minimally | :03:38. | :03:40.
How does a court decide which way to go in a | :03:41. | :03:44.
situation where you have soleone saying one thing and doctors saying | :03:45. | :03:48.
The gathering of evidence is ongoing, because clearly a | :03:49. | :03:51.
medical diagnosis can change, so the court will be presented | :03:52. | :03:56.
with up-to-date evidence on the medical diagnosis. | :03:57. | :03:59.
But the court will be looking at this decision on the | :04:00. | :04:03.
basis of what is in Paul's best interests. | :04:04. | :04:05.
one can foresee, not in this case perhaps, | :04:06. | :04:09.
where a family might have | :04:10. | :04:11.
another reason for wanting to switch a machine off. | :04:12. | :04:17.
Everyone who works in these cases recognises that this | :04:18. | :04:19.
is the most important decishon a court and a judge is ever | :04:20. | :04:22.
These cases are treated extremely seriously and none | :04:23. | :04:26.
of these decisions are taken lightly, in any way. | :04:27. | :04:30.
Thank you very much indeed for your time. | :04:31. | :04:32.
"A popular 18-year-old with a promising future." | :04:33. | :04:39.
That's how the coroner described England under-19 footballer | :04:40. | :04:41.
Zoe Tynan at the inquest into her death earlier todax. | :04:42. | :04:46.
Zoe was playing for Fylde L`dies FC and hoping to sign a professional | :04:47. | :04:50.
She died in August, after she walked in front of a train at West Allerton | :04:51. | :04:58.
Mark Edwardson has been at the inquest. | :04:59. | :05:08.
Mark, Zoe was hoping to have a successful football career, wasn't | :05:09. | :05:18.
she? She was. And that may have already started. She did indeed | :05:19. | :05:23.

to her. And obviously, for the family, | :05:54. | :05:59.
our hearts go out to them. And, obviously, for the club | :06:00. | :06:03.
and oursleves it's a huge tragedy, but we've just got to make sure | :06:04. | :06:06.
that we keep going for Zoe, and I'm sure that's | :06:07. | :06:10.
what she would have wanted. So what was said in court today The | :06:11. | :06:26.
coroner spoke of CCTV footage which was taken from the train that hit | :06:27. | :06:28.
was taken from the train th`t hit Zoe. It appeared to show her calmly | :06:29. | :06:33.

reported there was no alcohol or drugs in her book bloodstream. The | :06:56. | :06:59.
coroner also described her `s a coroner also described her as a | :07:00. | :07:04.

teenager Charlene Downes have criticised police for taking | :08:32. | :08:35.
13 years to release potentially important CCTV | :08:36. | :08:39.
images of their daughter Charlene was just 14 | :08:40. | :08:44.
when she was last seen, in November 2003, and it's believed | :08:45. | :08:47.
she was murdered. Police say the new footage was found | :08:48. | :08:51.
as part of a review of the initial investigation | :08:52. | :08:54.
into her disappearance. Saturday, November the 1st, 2003 - | :08:55. | :08:57.
and Charlene Downes is seen walking with her sister Rebecca | :08:58. | :09:05.
on Blackpool's Bank Hey Strdet. A few hours later | :09:06. | :09:09.
she would disappear. You learn to live with it. But you | :09:10. | :09:13.
never get over it. I will ndver get never get over it. I will never get | :09:14. | :09:24.
over it. Until justice is done. In the footage she's | :09:25. | :09:26.
wearing the clothes in which she disappeared, | :09:27. | :09:28.
including a distinctive pair Yet the footage has never bden seen | :09:29. | :09:30.
by the public. What I can't fathom is why this was | :09:31. | :09:43.
never found in the previous investigation. This is the bit I am | :09:44. | :09:47.
disgusted with. But at the same time I am happy they have found the | :09:48. | :09:51.
footage. Now hopefully they could move forward and get some answers. | :09:52. | :09:52.
The first investigation into Charlene's disappearance | :09:53. | :09:53.
This man - Iyad Albattikhi was charged with her | :09:54. | :09:56.
His trial in 2008 collapsed after doubts about the reli`bility | :09:57. | :10:00.
Lancashire Police was criticised for its handling of the case. | :10:01. | :10:06.
Charlene's parents hope this new footage will create | :10:07. | :10:08.
But believe it should have been made public sooner. | :10:09. | :10:18.
Can you understand their disappointment that it has taken 13 | :10:19. | :10:20.

this and they were shown the images. We have just found them. And that is | :10:30. | :10:37.
why we are just publishing them now. But I completely understand they | :10:38. | :10:40.
want to know what happened to their daughter, and we are committed to do | :10:41. | :10:44.
all we can to find those responsible for Charlene's murder. As time goes | :10:45. | :10:49.
for Charlene's murder. As thme goes by detectives except it is harder to | :10:50. | :10:55.
solve the mystery. But they say they remain determined. A ?100,000 reward | :10:56. | :11:00.
remains an offer for inform`tion leading to a conviction or recovery | :11:01. | :11:03.

difficulties it can also be... The play is being performed... | :12:06. | :12:15.
On stage they're the The play is being performed... | :12:16. | :12:17.
Off it, these performers say they're too often disregarded. | :12:18. | :12:24.
I know that it is real life and want people to consider if we were in | :12:25. | :12:32.
charge would reorganise society charge would reorganise sochety | :12:33. | :12:33.
differently. Mia is about a learning disabled | :12:34. | :12:34.
woman who's having a baby. It was inspired by the experiences | :12:35. | :12:36.
of the sister of one of the cast, and deals with the whole issue | :12:37. | :12:40.
of parent assessments. There is so much going on in the | :12:41. | :12:53.
parent assessment manual that she had to fill in. And you wonder how | :12:54. | :12:55.
do I even answer half of thdse do I even answer half of these | :12:56. | :12:56.
questions. For Anna Gray it's her | :12:57. | :12:57.
first big job. I don't want to give anything away. | :12:58. | :13:10.
I just want to make the most of it for my fellow team. | :13:11. | :13:15.
The performers here say the very fact this theatre company exists | :13:16. | :13:17.
sends a powerful message - that people living with learning | :13:18. | :13:20.
disabilities shouldn't be defined by them. | :13:21. | :13:33.
Just as I have a learning dhsability doesn't mean I'm not able to think | :13:34. | :13:43.
for myself. We want people to come away not thinking I watched some | :13:44. | :13:44.
learning disabled people, but to learning disabled people, btt to | :13:45. | :13:49.
come away thinking I watched some professional performers on stage. | :13:50. | :13:50.
Mia's on at the Lowry for just two nights - | :13:51. | :13:52.
Football - and we'll be at the Etihad Stadium in a loment, | :13:53. | :14:01.
where Manchester City take on Barcelona in the | :14:02. | :14:03.
They will be hoping their success replicates that of the women's team. | :14:04. | :14:21.
You look like you have on a replica shirt. | :14:22. | :14:23.
The club's women go into the next stage of their competition | :14:24. | :14:26.
against Brondby next week, after winning | :14:27. | :14:27.
A draw in their final Women's Super League match | :14:28. | :14:31.
at the weekend meant they fhnished the domestic season unbeaten. | :14:32. | :14:33.
Earlier I asked City's Engl`nd stars Lucy Bronze and Steph Houghton | :14:34. | :14:36.
Yes, for us, our first priority was to win the league trophx, | :14:37. | :14:40.
As the season has gone on, game by game, we've been pl`ying | :14:41. | :14:43.
It was all about trying not to get beaten, and I feel as if we have | :14:44. | :14:48.
developed the mentality where it is, no matter what, at all costs, | :14:49. | :14:51.
So probably that was evident on Sunday. | :14:52. | :14:54.
We didn't play at our best, but no matter what, we knew | :14:55. | :14:57.
we would get a point or three points. | :14:58. | :14:59.
So I think it's been a fantastic season. | :15:00. | :15:01.
To come here with two trophies is unbelievable. | :15:02. | :15:03.
How much is the way Manchester City have embraced women's football, | :15:04. | :15:05.
Because you train alongside the men, don't you, on a similar footing | :15:06. | :15:09.
City have got a plan in place, and they've invested | :15:10. | :15:12.
It's not just thrown at players' feet, it's thrown into the club | :15:13. | :15:16.
into the pitch, look at the stadium we've got, | :15:17. | :15:18.
the attendances, the quality of football, | :15:19. | :15:20.
So it's really invested in the right ways, and that's the way City | :15:21. | :15:24.
have done it differently with the Women's Team, | :15:25. | :15:26.
it is not just money, money, money, it's really the time and the effort | :15:27. | :15:30.
and the planning that we've done, and obviously we've come out | :15:31. | :15:32.
with these two trophies, and we're changing the whold | :15:33. | :15:34.
perception of women's footb`ll as well in doing that. | :15:35. | :15:37.
As young girls growing up, did you ever imagine a caredr | :15:38. | :15:40.
in the way it has panned out, because those changes have | :15:41. | :15:42.
come along, I guess, in unison with you moving | :15:43. | :15:45.
Yes, it has massively changdd, especially over the last | :15:46. | :15:49.
three or four years, and I think, I am probably speaking | :15:50. | :15:51.
on behalf of Lucy as well, I think we always thought you'd have | :15:52. | :15:55.
to get an education, we both went to university, | :15:56. | :15:57.
got a degree, and football was more of a hobby than a job, | :15:58. | :16:00.
but now we are fortunate enough to say, OK, yes, | :16:01. | :16:02.
I'm a full-time footballer, I play for Manchester City, | :16:03. | :16:04.
That's the way the game is going, which is great for young girls that | :16:05. | :16:18.
are just starting to play football now. | :16:19. | :16:19.
The reason we are prerecordhng this earlier in the day is | :16:20. | :16:22.
because the men's team are playing tonight. | :16:23. | :16:24.
I guess you're going to go and watch. | :16:25. | :16:25.
They are the ones that have got to live up to you, really, now! | :16:26. | :16:29.
No, they kick-started it all, didn't they? | :16:30. | :16:31.
They really started it off and it has filtered | :16:32. | :16:33.
You look at the 23, the 18s, the women's, the boys' acaddmy, | :16:34. | :16:37.
the girls' academy that has just started now was well, | :16:38. | :16:39.
and the success in the club in every aspect of it. | :16:40. | :16:42.
Lucy, Steph, many thanks indeed, many congratulations, | :16:43. | :16:43.
Incredible success. Billion. | :16:44. | :16:55.
And it is something that the men And it is something that the men | :16:56. | :16:57.
would love to emulate if thdy can. It kicks off in just under an hour, | :16:58. | :17:02.
so let's get the latest from Stuart Flinders, | :17:03. | :17:05.
who's live at the Etihad St`dium. When they were then Barcelona, it | :17:06. | :17:15.
did not go well, 4-0. City have a lot to prove on their home ground, | :17:16. | :17:21.
haven't they? They have, but this stadium was built for nights like | :17:22. | :17:26.
this. In just one hour, 22 of the best players on the planet will be | :17:27. | :17:30.
in action. Let us start by hearing the words of the city managdr. | :17:31. | :17:38.
As it's the final, and you have to play in that way, | :17:39. | :17:41.
like a final because there's just three games left, and like | :17:42. | :17:43.
we dropped two points in Glasgow, we were penalised a lot in that time | :17:44. | :17:47.
and you have to recover the points in the next two games. | :17:48. | :17:53.
That is the Manchester city manager. Let us hear from Ian from the Daily | :17:54. | :18:04.
Mail. Barcelona tonight, without the big players, should be a pushover? | :18:05. | :18:10.
Absolutely. It is never a ptshover and against this team. Many teams | :18:11. | :18:13.
have tried to beat Barcelona and have failed. But I would sax that | :18:14. | :18:19.
Manchester city have a puncher's chance tonight. Barcelona are | :18:20. | :18:25.
missing players, defenders. They still have good players. Lionel | :18:26. | :18:28.
Messi's beard has not slowed him down. City have good players. They | :18:29. | :18:39.
would the -- last game, and if the start well tonight, they could do | :18:40. | :18:41.
start well tonight, they cotld do something here tonight. What do the | :18:42. | :18:45.
Manchester city defenders h`ve something here tonight. What do the | :18:46. | :18:48.
Manchester city defenders h`ve to do to war against Lionel Messi, Luis | :18:49. | :18:50.
Suarez, Neymar, they are frightening Suarez, Neymar, they are frhghtening | :18:51. | :18:56.
names. I was going to say they should pray, but that is not enough. | :18:57. | :19:00.
You have to rely on midfield to help you out, to make sure you do not | :19:01. | :19:04.
make mistakes. City have made mistakes against Barcelona before. | :19:05. | :19:07.
You have to hope that they make You have to hope that they lake | :19:08. | :19:20.
mistakes. They can be beaten, occasionally. Thank you for that. | :19:21. | :19:25.
The news is less good over `t Old Trafford, where the manager, Jose | :19:26. | :19:30.
Mourinho, has been charged with misconduct | :19:31. | :19:34.
for second time in a week by the Football Association | :19:35. | :19:36.
following his behaviour during Manchester United's draw | :19:37. | :19:38.
He was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg for allegedly | :19:39. | :19:41.
It follows a misconduct charge for comments he made about referee | :19:42. | :19:45.
Anthony Taylor before United's goalless draw | :19:46. | :19:47.
Next, to a story that's not just about sport, | :19:48. | :19:51.
Six years ago a Royal Marind from Wigan was shot | :19:52. | :19:59.
It was touch and go whether he'd survive. | :20:00. | :20:08.
This weekend, he'll be on dtty as a referee in rugby league's | :20:09. | :20:11.
Even if you're not a rugby fan, see what you make of this. | :20:12. | :20:22.
The men refereeing the Four Nations have to be as fit as the players. | :20:23. | :20:25.
On a cold morning in Leeds, they're being put through their pacds. | :20:26. | :20:28.
They are the best, not just in this country, but in the world, | :20:29. | :20:31.
and each will have his own story about how he got here, | :20:32. | :20:34.
but none will be quite so remarkable is Jack Smith's. | :20:35. | :20:40.
Hard to believe, but you're looking at a man who's had a bullet | :20:41. | :20:43.
rip into his chest, damaging liver and lung, | :20:44. | :20:45.
and breaking ribs as it made its way | :20:46. | :20:47.
In 2010, Jack Smith, from Wigan, was a Royal Marine | :20:48. | :20:59.
During a routine patrol he was shot, escaping the line of fire by rolling | :21:00. | :21:05.
As soon as I saw the hole in my chest, you kind | :21:06. | :21:15.
Anything on your limbs, or certainly gunshots to yotr limbs, | :21:16. | :21:20.
you're probably going to be surviving as blood loss is not | :21:21. | :21:23.
going to be as much, but as soon as you get a gunshot | :21:24. | :21:26.
through your vitals, you're struggling. | :21:27. | :21:27.
And yet, barely six years on he looks as fit and strong | :21:28. | :21:32.
But his recovery isn't quite complete. | :21:33. | :21:37.
I have quite a lot of back trouble and hamstring trouble | :21:38. | :21:40.
from the gunshot wound in mx back, and also from falling off the roof, | :21:41. | :21:43.
so I spend a lot of time away from your doing rehabilitathon | :21:44. | :21:46.
Since 2010, Jack's married, started a family and made hhs debut | :21:47. | :21:51.
Jack Smith, the referee, only his second super leagud game. | :21:52. | :21:57.
Now, he's joined the elite, taking charge of | :21:58. | :21:59.
It is a remarkable story, but ultimately he will be judged | :22:00. | :22:11.
with as a referee, and it won't take long if he is not | :22:12. | :22:14.
up to the level for people to remind him that he needs | :22:15. | :22:17.
But locked away at home is a reminder that he's | :22:18. | :22:22.
It's the bullet that nearly killed him. | :22:23. | :22:33.
When times are hard or times are bad, | :22:34. | :22:35.
I've got a beautiful wife and a lovely family at home, | :22:36. | :22:40.
so no matter how bad it gets, you're so much luckier | :22:41. | :22:43.
That kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? | :22:44. | :22:54.
Josh Charnley, who's switched codes with a move | :22:55. | :22:56.
from Wigan Warriors to new club Sale Sharks, says he's determined | :22:57. | :22:59.
The 24-year-old winger won two Grand Finals and two Challenge Cup | :23:00. | :23:03.
medals for Wigan in more than 150 appearances. | :23:04. | :23:05.
He's been with Sale for just over a week and preparing | :23:06. | :23:07.
for Friday's match against Wasps in the Anglo Welsh Cup. | :23:08. | :23:10.
That is it from me. A big m`tch in prospect here in one hour. Back to | :23:11. | :23:15.
you. Thank you very much indeed. Goodness | :23:16. | :23:19.
me. What an amazing guy, Jack Smith. If you fancy getting a bit lore | :23:20. | :23:24.
active, then it might be worth grabbing your trainers | :23:25. | :23:27.
and heading to Salford. A new initiative called | :23:28. | :23:29.
Beat The Street is turning the city Competitors can walk, run, | :23:30. | :23:32.
cycle or roll to fifty sensor points It's proving popular, | :23:33. | :23:43.
with 5,000 people already signed up, The objective is simple - | :23:44. | :23:46.
take a fob... It is quite hard to reach area, | :23:47. | :23:49.
and we wanted to harbour a bit of community spirit | :23:50. | :23:57.
and get people involved, and going to the green spacd | :23:58. | :23:59.
like the Park, places like that. That mileage has now increased | :24:00. | :24:02.
slightly, thanks to the efforts of pupils from Light | :24:03. | :24:08.
Oaks Junior School. Every day you're doing, | :24:09. | :24:15.
you will get healthy and unhealthy. And it's much more fun | :24:16. | :24:17.
than watching TV. And, you get to miss | :24:18. | :24:21.
maths this morning. From those getting out of lessons | :24:22. | :24:23.
to those getting out on thehr lunch breaks, Beat The Street | :24:24. | :24:28.
is open to all ages. It has really helped with having | :24:29. | :24:31.
different jobs, that I've jtst been able to go and tap that extra box | :24:32. | :24:34.
and wok that extra mile. I think it has really | :24:35. | :24:46.
benefited the kids as well. And the more distance you cover | :24:47. | :24:50.
the more points you can earn You won't remember | :24:51. | :24:52.
Play Your Cards Right, will you? They're certainly in the hunt | :24:53. | :25:00.
for prizes, having climbed to sixth Different teachers in school have | :25:01. | :25:03.
been doing different things in the classroom | :25:04. | :25:10.
and PE lessons to push it. There was a great buzz | :25:11. | :25:13.
in the assembly when the children were told about it, | :25:14. | :25:15.
and so many of them could not wait Do you think the teacher should be | :25:16. | :25:18.
doing more of it? Because they are just working | :25:19. | :25:23.
in school, they should get a bit Something Mrs Hughes | :25:24. | :25:27.

Let us have a look at the weather. Let us have a look at the weather. | :25:35. | :25:44.
It was a nice day for those youngsters in Salford. | :25:45. | :25:47.
Tomorrow is exactly the samd. Good Tomorrow is exactly the same. Good | :25:48. | :25:53.

everywhere. Through this evdning and everywhere. Through this evening and | :26:13. | :26:16.
overnight it will be cold, probably the coldest we have seen for a | :26:17. | :26:21.
while. One or two showers drifting in, but they will be the exception | :26:22. | :26:25.
rather than the rule. Here, you can see the rain moving into thd higher | :26:26. | :26:29.
