A woman's appeared in court charged with the murder of a man

:00:12.:00:15.

who was stabbed to death in St Helens.

:00:16.:00:17.

29-year-old Mireslaw Kowalczuk died from a single stab wound

:00:18.:00:19.

Karolina Rutkowska has been remanded in custody and will face

:00:20.:00:24.

Sales of raw milk from a Cumbrian farm have been suspended

:00:25.:00:31.

after the confirmation of food poisoning.

:00:32.:00:34.

Richard and Alison Park had already voluntarily stopped

:00:35.:00:37.

selling unpasteurised milk from their premises at

:00:38.:00:39.

The Food Standards Agency has now officially suspended all sales.

:00:40.:00:45.

There have been six confirmed cases of food poisoning linked

:00:46.:00:47.

to Campylobacter found in the milk, and another 50 probable cases

:00:48.:00:50.

Lancashire Police are looking for this man who was caught

:00:51.:00:57.

on camera stealing three charity boxes from a

:00:58.:01:00.

They were taken from Waheed's on Randal Street

:01:01.:01:04.

He came in through the front door and also stole a laptop.

:01:05.:01:08.

Liverpool and Blackpool have been named among the worst performing

:01:09.:01:11.

areas in the UK for house price growth over the past year.

:01:12.:01:16.

Figures from the Halifax show average prices in Liverpool rose

:01:17.:01:19.

by 0.2%, whilst in Blackpool they fell by half a percent.

:01:20.:01:22.

The average price in Blackpool is just under ?124,000.

:01:23.:01:30.

New research suggests national parks, including the Peak District

:01:31.:01:33.

and the Lake District, have lost a quarter

:01:34.:01:36.

of their government funding in the past five years.

:01:37.:01:38.

The Peak District saw its annual funding cut by ?2 million

:01:39.:01:41.

while the budget for the Lake District fell by more

:01:42.:01:43.

The government says the Parks' budgets are protected until 2020.

:01:44.:01:52.

Some of the world's top showjumpers and their horses

:01:53.:01:54.

are making their way to Liverpool for the opening of the city's

:01:55.:01:57.

International Horse Show tomorrow, the biggest event

:01:58.:01:59.

Stuart Pollitt has been to see how things are shaping up.

:02:00.:02:05.

From the biggest names in showjumping to the smallest

:02:06.:02:08.

Shetland pony, the Echo Arena has been transformed into a mecca

:02:09.:02:11.

Among the competitors are the UK's number one rider,

:02:12.:02:16.

Scott Brash and no fewer than six members of the famous

:02:17.:02:19.

It's great to be here in Liverpool with all the family

:02:20.:02:25.

and especially at this time of year, yeah.

:02:26.:02:29.

The first year that it was on, I think Nina and all the team did

:02:30.:02:35.

a fantastic job creating a top show in the North, which is

:02:36.:02:38.

The big stars start competing tomorrow.

:02:39.:02:40.

Today's opening session was a chance for amateur riders

:02:41.:02:43.

like Sophie Howard from Lancashire to sample the big stage.

:02:44.:02:46.

When you're in there it's not as bad but leading up to it, it's like,

:02:47.:02:49.

my heart is like constantly going like that but I really enjoy

:02:50.:02:56.

We travel a couple of hours every other weekend up and down

:02:57.:03:01.

the country but to have one in the North is really good.

:03:02.:03:04.

The Echo Arena has undergone a major transformation to host this event.

:03:05.:03:06.

And not just here in the arena, where they have specially designed

:03:07.:03:09.

fences and the special surface laid out, but behind in the back as well.

:03:10.:03:13.

Part of the car park has now become a make-shift stable block

:03:14.:03:16.

with around 100 horses being stored here over the next few days.

:03:17.:03:19.

It's something different for the city of Liverpool,

:03:20.:03:21.

who of course have an equestrian heritage.

:03:22.:03:23.

We have the Grand National based down the road at Aintree.

:03:24.:03:26.

We have got nine or ten riders coming over from Europe,

:03:27.:03:28.

so they will be on their way now, so they take this really seriously.

:03:29.:03:32.

It's a big deal, it's top sport and there will be lots of people

:03:33.:03:35.

viewing from around the world on the live streaming.

:03:36.:03:37.

The main events last for three days, starting tomorrow.

:03:38.:03:40.

Stuart Pollitt, BBC Northwest Tonight, Liverpool.

:03:41.:03:44.

Now, you will have have heard of famous artists

:03:45.:03:46.

But do you recognise the name of Wynford Dewhurst?

:03:47.:03:50.

The largely unknown artist was born in Manchester in the 19th century

:03:51.:03:53.

and an exhibition of his work is currently showing in the city.

:03:54.:03:57.

Well, we saw this was a Manchester artist but to be honest

:03:58.:04:05.

with you although I'd heard that name, I didn't really

:04:06.:04:07.

I hadn't heard of Wynford Dewhurst before.

:04:08.:04:11.

The Manchester Art Gallery has opened an exhibition,

:04:12.:04:18.

which showcases a collection of the finest works

:04:19.:04:23.

by the Manchester-born writer and artist dubbed

:04:24.:04:25.

Dewhurst's works were heavily influenced by one of the founders

:04:26.:04:31.

Everybody who truly loves Manchester really should be very,

:04:32.:04:37.

Not only was he born and raised here, he held a lifelong

:04:38.:04:43.

Dewhurst is most famous for his 1908 work, the picnic.

:04:44.:04:54.

Dewhurst is most famous for his 1908 work, The Picnic.

:04:55.:04:57.

This is the artist in 1908, at the very peak of his powers.

:04:58.:05:00.

He is expressing his vision in probably his most complete way

:05:01.:05:02.

and many people do see this as his finest work.

:05:03.:05:06.

He originally trained in the legal profession but after showing

:05:07.:05:11.

artistic flair and after a number of his paintings were published

:05:12.:05:15.

in local journals, he decided to become a painter.

:05:16.:05:20.

And he was quite a controversial character in that he devised

:05:21.:05:23.

a theory that the art movement, Impressionism, first

:05:24.:05:25.

Dewhurst outlines in his theory that Impressionism wasn't French

:05:26.:05:32.

in origin but it was British and he names specifically

:05:33.:05:36.

John Constable and J M W Turner, two of the greatest landscape

:05:37.:05:39.

artists in history, obviously British.

:05:40.:05:44.

Whatever the case, Dewhurst's talent certainly speaks for itself.

:05:45.:05:46.

Manchester's Monet is on until April.

:05:47.:05:48.

Deena Campbell, BBC Northwest Tonight, Manchester.

:05:49.:05:56.

A greengrocers shop in Cheshire is to close

:05:57.:05:58.

Richard's on Park Road in Hale will open for the final time tomorrow.

:05:59.:06:04.

The current owners who have run the shop for the past thirty years

:06:05.:06:07.

say despite expanding the business it is no longer sustainable.

:06:08.:06:10.

Local residents say the shop will be mist.

:06:11.:06:15.

It's a great shame, I mean Richard's an institution and not enough people

:06:16.:06:18.

unfortunately have supported the shop over the years and it's so

:06:19.:06:22.

convenient, no problem with parking and I'm going to miss him.

:06:23.:06:28.

I'll be very sad because I've been coming very

:06:29.:06:31.

regularly and I've now got to make a major decision,

:06:32.:06:33.

A lot of blog today. Yes, and mixed over the next few days. It looks

:06:34.:06:53.

like tonight and tomorrow rather cloudy and very, very mild. On New

:06:54.:06:58.

Year's day it will be cold but it should be bright. In between, there

:06:59.:07:03.

is that line of rain turning up as people will be having their New

:07:04.:07:07.

Year's Eve celebrations, the worst possible time. At the moment, a lot

:07:08.:07:12.

of cloud but not complete the there will be a break every now and then.

:07:13.:07:16.

You could see some spots of drizzle and the highest ground but nothing

:07:17.:07:20.

more than that. In most cities these are big numbers on the chart, very

:07:21.:07:25.

mild. In the tomorrow and like today, a lot of cloud in many places

:07:26.:07:30.

but other places will see some sunshine. Many places will the nice

:07:31.:07:34.

spells of sunshine. A couple of hours in the afternoon. The breeze

:07:35.:07:38.

is relatively light and once again the numbers are good. Temperatures

:07:39.:07:43.

of nine or 10 Celsius, way above where they should be. That here

:07:44.:07:47.

comes New Year's Eve and as the rain works its way across the whole of

:07:48.:07:51.

the North West in time for midnight I am afraid some of that rain will

:07:52.:07:55.

be heavy. It spoil things, though, will it? No, we just stay inside! We

:07:56.:08:01.

will be back at ten past 11pm. Goodbye.

:08:02.:08:08.

Good evening, fog has been a problem in recent days, slow changes over

:08:09.:08:15.

the next 48 hours or so as this weather front moves south bringing

:08:16.:08:19.

rain and behind it, much cleaner, cold arctic air which will sweep

:08:20.:08:24.

that fog out of the way. The fog was dense in places, you could hardly

:08:25.:08:28.

see across the Thames in Kingston, Greater London this afternoon. It

:08:29.:08:32.

has been thickening up in the last few hours and if you are on the move

:08:33.:08:36.

in the next few hours, into the morning, state shoes and two BBC

:08:37.:08:39.

local radio because it will keep you up-to-date because it will be dense

:08:40.:08:46.

in the morning. -- stay tuned. Maybe some fog elsewhere. It will be down

:08:47.:08:50.

to 2 degrees in the centre of London and lower than that in rural areas

:08:51.:08:54.

but no problems like that for the North with a south-westerly breeze

:08:55.:08:56.

keeping temperatures in double figures for many parts. Rain moving

:08:57.:09:01.

south into the central lowlands in the afternoon and going towards

:09:02.:09:03.

Northern
