George Osborne will tonight face a grilling from his local | :01:03. | :01:11.
Police investigating the terrorist outrage in Westminster have arrested | :01:12. | :01:16.
two people in Manchester. They are among a number of arrests by | :01:17. | :01:21.
detectives trying to establish whether Cally Masood was helped or | :01:22. | :01:24.
encouraged by others before its attack on the capital. Our chief | :01:25. | :01:29.
reporter is in west Didsbury Waratah starts tonight. | :01:30. | :01:35.
That's right, you can see a police car behind me, at present still here | :01:36. | :01:39.
at this gated housing department as has been throughout the day this | :01:40. | :01:45.
morning. A man of 35 arrested here by detectives investigating the | :01:46. | :01:49.
outrage in Westminster. Greater Manchester Police helping a net | :01:50. | :01:53.
operating, but it very much being handled by the Metropolitan Police. | :01:54. | :01:59.
It wasn't until lunchtime they got confirmation that west Didsbury had | :02:00. | :02:03.
been involved in that operation. We heard from a 32-year-old woman who | :02:04. | :02:07.
had also been arrested. Quite a day of events in this enquiry. | :02:08. | :02:15.
In the aftermath of the outrage, the place very quickly identified the | :02:16. | :02:17.
attacker. Now they must identify whether Khalid Masood acted alone or | :02:18. | :02:23.
in collision with others. The investigation by the Metropolitan | :02:24. | :02:26.
Police has led to a number of arrests in different parts of the | :02:27. | :02:28.
country. Yesterday, the concentrated on Birmingham. Today came news that | :02:29. | :02:34.
had been arrests close to home, so far as this region is concerned. | :02:35. | :02:39.
We have made two significant arrests overnight. One in the West Midlands, | :02:40. | :02:43.
one in the North West. We have five addresses that the search is | :02:44. | :02:49.
continuing, and six search is concluded. | :02:50. | :02:52.
The scene of one of those searchers, this gated housing development in | :02:53. | :02:57.
west Manchester. A man of 35 was arrested here in the early hours of | :02:58. | :02:59.
the morning. At had no idea what was going on, I | :03:00. | :03:03.
didn't see anything and I wasn't told anything either. | :03:04. | :03:07.
Would you think of something like this happening around here? | :03:08. | :03:13.
Very, very scary. This man was informed by the police. | :03:14. | :03:21.
The police have kept us informed as usual. | :03:22. | :03:24.
What is your message to the people in the constituency? | :03:25. | :03:29.
There is no need for alarm, there is no threat to the local community. | :03:30. | :03:34.
During the afternoon, a grey car was taken away. | :03:35. | :03:39.
The police maintained a presence here throughout the day, as have the | :03:40. | :03:43.
media. In addition to the 35 man arrested here early this morning, | :03:44. | :03:47.
the Metropolitan Police now tell us a 32-year-old woman has also been | :03:48. | :03:50.
arrested as part of their operation in Manchester today. Meanwhile, in | :03:51. | :03:58.
London, a Edge Hill university students who find themselves at the | :03:59. | :04:03.
centre of yesterday's dramatist in hospital. He had a special visitor | :04:04. | :04:08.
today in the shape of the Prince of Wales. | :04:09. | :04:11.
The students have dealt with this very maturely, supporting each | :04:12. | :04:14.
other. I don't think I was be like that at their age, I'm so proud of | :04:15. | :04:17.
them. Meanwhile, the investigation into | :04:18. | :04:20.
this man, when he did it and if anyone help Tim continues. | :04:21. | :04:25.
And greater match the police stressing tonight there is no direct | :04:26. | :04:32.
evidence are intelligence to suggest any raised alert level for terrorism | :04:33. | :04:36.
here in greater match. They have been assisting the Metropolitan | :04:37. | :04:39.
Police in this particular investigation. This is a complex | :04:40. | :04:44.
investigation which will go on for some time. People will be arrested | :04:45. | :04:48.
and then released without charge, we don't know what the outcome will be | :04:49. | :04:51.
or what the placement today when they talked of a significant | :04:52. | :04:52.
arrests. George Osborne will tonight face | :04:53. | :04:58.
a grilling from his local Conservative Party over his decision | :04:59. | :05:01.
to take up a role as editor The former Chancellor last week | :05:02. | :05:04.
announced he would work for the Evening Standard | :05:05. | :05:07.
alongside his role as Tatton MP. He also has lucrative contracts | :05:08. | :05:11.
at an investment company Our political editor | :05:12. | :05:14.
Nina Warhurst is outside It's been a week now since that | :05:15. | :05:37.
shock announcement. Since then, George Osborne's face questions from | :05:38. | :05:41.
Parliament and journalists, but not yet has he had to face the party | :05:42. | :05:46.
faithful. The AGM is taking place around a quarter of a mile away from | :05:47. | :05:50.
here. You are told not only way we not allowed in, we removed on by | :05:51. | :05:55.
police. But he will have to face up to that question tonight, that | :05:56. | :05:59.
?75,000 question test out his salary as an MP - | :06:00. | :06:05.
how can you possibly edit a London newspaper, server us is a member of | :06:06. | :06:06.
Parliament, and serve us well. After flabbergasting Fleet Street | :06:07. | :06:10.
and rocking Westminster, Back in the North, all | :06:11. | :06:12.
hard hats and hi-vis. Yeah, building the | :06:13. | :06:15.
Northern Powerhouse! ..George Osborne said there's no | :06:16. | :06:18.
hole to dig himself out of. Whether it's as a constituency | :06:19. | :06:22.
MP or in parliament, fighting for the things I care | :06:23. | :06:25.
about, or editing the Evening Standard, I'm going to go | :06:26. | :06:27.
on fighting for a prosperous A successful Northern Powerhouse, | :06:28. | :06:32.
a successful London, He's sure he can do it all, | :06:33. | :06:35.
but not everyone's convinced. It might not have the same | :06:36. | :06:43.
status as the Standard, but the Wilmslow Guardian reflects | :06:44. | :06:45.
the opinion of "It's time to vote | :06:46. | :06:48.
Labour," shouts Charlotte. "He's not fit to represent | :06:49. | :06:55.
me," says Christine. And Alan asks, "Does anyone have | :06:56. | :06:57.
Martin Bell's phone number?" Tonight, local Tories like Tony | :06:58. | :06:59.
will get to ask more questions, Is he going to continue doing his | :07:00. | :07:02.
speeches and America, for instance? And all those questions will be | :07:03. | :07:08.
asked, without a doubt. He was the Chancellor | :07:09. | :07:15.
of the Exchequer, we're proud to have had him, | :07:16. | :07:23.
and I think he's done We just want to make sure he's | :07:24. | :07:26.
going to be able to keep It would take a lot | :07:27. | :07:30.
for Tatton Tories to fully But when patience is tested, | :07:31. | :07:34.
even the most loyal That's interesting, Tony there was | :07:35. | :07:47.
very supportive of George Osborne, thinks he can do it. What are the | :07:48. | :07:52.
possible outcomes here? Did they, if they think it's untenable, could | :07:53. | :07:58.
they get rid of him? As I understand it, what they could | :07:59. | :08:02.
do tonight is raise a motion that would begin the process of | :08:03. | :08:06.
deselection, ahead of the next election. But that could be academic | :08:07. | :08:11.
anyway, because Tatton as a constituency could disappear under | :08:12. | :08:16.
boundary changes. On a separate note, we found that the Committee on | :08:17. | :08:19.
Standards in Public Life is to launch a separate investigation into | :08:20. | :08:26.
MP's second jobs. Taking 23 the number of Government bodies that | :08:27. | :08:31.
will scrutinising George or Warren and his jobs. -- taking in pic-mac | :08:32. | :08:36.
three the number of Government bodies that will be scrutinising | :08:37. | :08:37.
George Osborne and his jobs. Police are investigating the death | :08:38. | :08:42.
of a 19-month-old girl in Preston. She died in hospital, | :08:43. | :08:44.
after being treated by paramedics at an address | :08:45. | :08:46.
in Lostock Hall yesterday. An 18-year-old woman and two men - | :08:47. | :08:48.
aged 18 and 19 - have been arrested. A former youth football scout | :08:49. | :08:54.
who worked at Liverpool has been arrested by police investigating | :08:55. | :08:56.
allegations of historical Harry Dunn was detained | :08:57. | :08:59.

they retired a year ago have received a medal from the Pope | :09:34. | :09:37.
to mark their amazing achievement. Yesterday, just before | :09:38. | :09:42.
a special mass at St Hilda's in Tottington to make the awards, | :09:43. | :09:44.
I went to meet John and Elanie Carroll and they told me | :09:45. | :09:47.
about their extraordinary family. Recognition from the Pope for | :09:48. | :09:53.
a lifetime of life-changing work. In over 40 years, John | :09:54. | :09:59.
and Elaine Carroll have adopted three children and fostered | :10:00. | :10:02.
another 25 more. And I would recommend anybody to do | :10:03. | :10:06.
fostering if they could. I'm sorry I'm a bit emotional, | :10:07. | :10:20.
but I have missed it. You know, I really, | :10:21. | :10:28.
really missed it. Last night, in a private mass | :10:29. | :10:32.
at St Hilda's in Tottington, the man who alerted the Vatican | :10:33. | :10:35.
to the Carroll's commitment to caring for children presented | :10:36. | :10:39.
them with the Benemerenti Medal It's very much an important part | :10:40. | :10:47.
of Catholic life, is the family. Because of John and Elaine, | :10:48. | :10:51.
over the years, children have had a great chance to start their lives | :10:52. | :10:54.
and to grow and develop. There's a shortage of over | :10:55. | :10:56.
1200 foster places in John and Elaine pay tribute to Child | :10:57. | :11:01.

in their lives, really. We help them, support them, | :11:10. | :11:14.
that's all you can do, isn't it? You have to tell them | :11:15. | :11:17.
that what happened to It's something that's been, well, | :11:18. | :11:19.
forced on them, if you like. Sheena was first fostered and then | :11:20. | :11:28.
adopted by John and Elaine. She was there to see them | :11:29. | :11:31.
received the papal medal. I just find it completely | :11:32. | :11:34.
amazing, really. And I just think they've | :11:35. | :11:37.
done such a good job, I'm very happy that | :11:38. | :11:41.
I've got these parents. An exceptional couple | :11:42. | :11:47.
who so thoroughly deserve A really lovely family and a very | :11:48. | :11:50.
well-deserved award. The wait is over - | :11:51. | :12:01.
we hear from Anthony Crolla I'll go absolutely mad, | :12:02. | :12:05.
I'll go mad along with that crowd. It gives me goose bumps | :12:06. | :12:12.
just thinking about it. And your wonderful efforts | :12:13. | :12:15.
for Comic Relief - we'll look at your fundraising, | :12:16. | :12:17.
and a superstar guest presenter Younger viewers will really enjoy | :12:18. | :12:36.
it. If you have young children in the house, you might want to get | :12:37. | :12:40.
them round. He's good. Could be a bit scary protest action! -- scary | :12:41. | :12:46.
for us! Next tonight, the story of a group | :12:47. | :12:47.
of people in Cheshire who took Throughout the 1960s, | :12:48. | :12:50.
many were reluctantly moved into high-rise flats | :12:51. | :12:53.
as their old houses were demolished. But when residents of a street | :12:54. | :12:56.
in Macclesfield were told to move into tower blocks in 1971, | :12:57. | :12:58.
they simply refused. Many of the tower blocks built | :12:59. | :13:00.
to replace streets of terraced Back in the 60s, the march | :13:01. | :13:08.

for a high-rise in the We'd only just left one | :13:24. | :13:26.

when they came through and said The campaign to save their | :13:34. | :13:36.
properties was led by Rod Hackney, a young architect who lived | :13:37. | :13:46.
in the street. The greatest piece of single | :13:47. | :13:50.
advice, I think, is having The biggest challenge | :13:51. | :13:53.
was to persuade people to break All their life, they had been | :13:54. | :14:00.
used to being looked And here they were, unfortunately, | :14:01. | :14:06.
living in houses that were slums. And I was coming in and saying, | :14:07. | :14:13.
we can do something about it Rod Hackney showed the houses | :14:14. | :14:16.
could be renovated at a third The council wouldn't go for it, | :14:17. | :14:21.
so the residents did it themselves. It was all new, and we were | :14:22. | :14:33.
young, fit, so we just It took five years, but the houses | :14:34. | :14:37.
are still there today. And so are some of those who took | :14:38. | :14:46.
on the powers that be. Their success inspired similar | :14:47. | :14:49.
schemes around the world. I've come down in the morning, | :14:50. | :14:54.
opened the blinds, and there would be people from halfway | :14:55. | :14:57.
round the world, looking out Prince Charles praised it | :14:58. | :15:00.
as an example of good Rod Hackney went on to become | :15:01. | :15:06.
president of And the authorities were made | :15:07. | :15:10.
to think again about the rush Sport now with Richard, | :15:11. | :15:16.
and one of our best-known boxers has his sights set on winning | :15:17. | :15:30.
back his world title. Yes, Manchester's Anthony Crolla | :15:31. | :15:32.
goes into the ring tomorrow night against the man | :15:33. | :15:37.
who took his lightweight title Anthony, known as "million Dollar", | :15:38. | :15:40.
lost his WBA lightweight crown And if he wins this one, | :15:41. | :15:45.
it really will open the doors The pair weighed in this afternoon | :15:46. | :15:50.
ahead of their clash at And as I found out, | :15:51. | :15:54.
Anthony is desperate For Anthony Crolla, this is a chance | :15:55. | :15:57.
to get back to the very top. It's noticeable how | :15:58. | :16:13.
relaxed Anthony has been As he told me in his gym, | :16:14. | :16:15.
he says he's absolutely determined If I win back the title, it's among | :16:16. | :16:22.
the best prices in the sport, against a future Hall of Famer, | :16:23. | :16:33.
this would take some beating. For you, it would actually | :16:34. | :16:38.
top winning the world Anthony, known as one | :16:39. | :16:40.
of the nice guys in boxing, In the lead up to his previous | :16:41. | :16:45.
fight, he was personally I've been lucky enough where two | :16:46. | :16:51.
very good friends and my little I'm not worried about driving | :16:52. | :16:58.
across to certain parts of Manchester, or timing | :16:59. | :17:01.
it with the rush hour It was, but there's | :17:02. | :17:03.
no-one else to blame. But I certainly feel | :17:04. | :17:10.
the benefits of not doing that. Anthony never shirks training, | :17:11. | :17:13.
but occasionally, like everyone And as a fanatical | :17:14. | :17:17.
Manchester United fan, Going away with supporters up | :17:18. | :17:21.
and down the country, around Europe, there's not much of a better | :17:22. | :17:29.
buzz than that. And you'll be a celebrity | :17:30. | :17:33.
fan, of course. Emotionally, how would you feel | :17:34. | :17:35.
if you do win the title back? I'll go absolutely mad, | :17:36. | :17:41.
I'll go mad along with that crowd. It does give me goose bumps | :17:42. | :17:47.
just thinking about it. Manchester City have been | :17:48. | :17:59.
fined ?15,000 by Uefa for a pitch invasion, | :18:00. | :18:03.
objects being thrown and a late kick-off in the home leg | :18:04. | :18:05.
of their Champions League And they've accepted an FA | :18:06. | :18:08.
charge of - and I quote - "Failing to ensure their players | :18:09. | :18:12.
conducted themselves in an orderly fashion" after Liverpool | :18:13. | :18:14.
were awarded a penalty in last The case will be heard by an | :18:15. | :18:17.
independent regulatory commission. On the pitch, City's women have | :18:18. | :18:22.

been several well that North West Tonight is going to the dogs. It's | :19:42. | :19:43.
about it, perhaps. Lots of you have been getting up | :19:44. | :19:46.

the years, Alice and Brenda So we sent them to visit some | :19:58. | :20:00.
of the people they help They went with Ben Shires | :20:01. | :20:04.
from Officially Amazing on CBBC. Hello, I'm Ben Shires and I'm | :20:05. | :20:11.
here for Comic Relief in the Anfield area of Liverpool to take a look | :20:12. | :20:14.
at some inspiring charity work that's being helped by the two | :20:15. | :20:17.
fantastic fundraising females They've been working for more | :20:18. | :20:20.
than 30 years to raise money So shall we take | :20:21. | :20:24.
a look around, ladies? And I'd better dress | :20:25. | :20:27.
for the part, too. MUSIC: Finetime | :20:28. | :20:30.
by Cast Good for the community, | :20:31. | :20:47.
good for the kids, and that's what Comic | :20:48. | :20:53.
Relief's all about. It's about making sure | :20:54. | :20:55.
that the people get something As long as you promise not to | :20:56. | :21:00.
soak me! What is the bus going to be | :21:01. | :21:14.
used for in the area? The bus is going to | :21:15. | :21:21.
be used as a youth bus that goes around and could be | :21:22. | :21:23.
used by multiple charities to do We're hoping that the youth buses | :21:24. | :21:26.
going to be able to be set up, done by young people, | :21:27. | :21:31.
and then actually get used by young people on the streets, | :21:32. | :21:34.
so they can actually engage with us without going into a building | :21:35. | :21:36.
or be somewhere else Girls, are you having | :21:37. | :21:39.
a good day today? What's the best thing | :21:40. | :21:42.
about coming here? So there's something | :21:43. | :21:46.
for everyone here, isn't there? I think it's boosted | :21:47. | :22:01.
me confidence a bit. I enjoy working with the children | :22:02. | :22:03.
and getting to know them has built up my | :22:04. | :22:05.
confidence in my future. Do you have any advice any would-be | :22:06. | :22:13.
fundraisers who might want to do No, I don't think George Osborne's | :22:14. | :22:17.
taken on it too much. Thank you for that informative, | :22:18. | :22:40.
yet entertaining report. You're watching BBC North West | :22:41. | :22:42.
Tonight with me, Hacker T Dog. Look it that big red ball, how | :22:43. | :22:51.
exciting! That says charity to me! Let's have a look at the fun you've | :22:52. | :22:55.
been having across the North West MUSIC: Give Me Your Love | :22:56. | :23:03.
by Sigala Yeah, it's a slow news day. Now, | :23:04. | :24:34.
over to the weather! I'm all right. | :24:35. | :24:40.
Tell us about the rain. There's nine, sunshine all the way. | :24:41. | :24:46.
People say you're a lot to handle, but I have worked with Tony lives | :24:47. | :24:52.
safer long-time! Good evening to year, beautiful day today, tonnes of | :24:53. | :24:56.
sunshine around, and this area of high pressure stays in charge over | :24:57. | :25:00.
the next couple of days. Try and find is what we're looking at. No | :25:01. | :25:04.
showers at all on the forecast today are likely hey, Diane! | :25:05. | :25:11.
What is the weather like in Wigan?! Where is Wigan the? Where it is. | :25:12. | :25:18.
That's wed the budget goes. Has Carol Kirkwood ever done that | :25:19. | :25:23.
for you? Think about it. The weather from Wigan and everywhere else, as | :25:24. | :25:27.
we go overnight, the blue descends on the map, so it will be cool in | :25:28. | :25:33.
places. Temperatures down to perhaps -1, you might get -2 somewhere. The | :25:34. | :25:40.
numbers are very towns and cities, so up to three for most of us. The | :25:41. | :25:46.
sun is up just before 6am, you get the light from around 5:30am, and | :25:47. | :25:51.
sunshine all the way, tonnes of sunshine. The breeze as lights, | :25:52. | :25:55.
lighter than today. I know today was better than yesterday, tomorrow will | :25:56. | :25:59.
be better than today. The reason is lighter, a better direction, so | :26:00. | :26:04.
through the afternoon we will have almost an interrupted sunshine for | :26:05. | :26:08.
all of the North West. You never know, we might push to 60 degrees | :26:09. | :26:12.
towards the end of the afternoon. Through the evening and into Sunday, | :26:13. | :26:20.
not quite as chilly as tonight. And the clocks go forward, Sir that's | :26:21. | :26:24.
what we're looking ahead to. On Sunday, the picture is the same. | :26:25. | :26:29.
Slightly more cloud cover through the day, but I prefer most places, | :26:30. | :26:34.
try and find. Nice amateurs will go for 13 degrees. | :26:35. | :26:41.
What was that, do it again? You're supposed Tillerson! | :26:42. | :26:46.
Hello, regional Roger, how are you? It's nice to be on a regional show | :26:47. | :26:50.
for a change. I'm normally on national television. Voice be yes, | :26:51. | :26:56.
very big time. It's so lovely to meet you, we'd | :26:57. | :27:06.
never met before. How are you? You're the budget Mike | :27:07. | :27:12.
Bushell? The mini version! | :27:13. | :27:22.
Not again! Try and balance it on your head. | :27:23. | :27:28.
He's gone off to chase it now! Are you going to be on the big show | :27:29. | :27:32.
at 7pm? Raising money for Children In Need. | :27:33. | :27:38.
Comic Relief, whatever it is. Comic Relief! It's on all evening. | :27:39. | :27:42.
See you! Bye-bye! | :27:43. | :27:47. |
