Welcome to North West Tonight with Annabel Tiffin

A mother screams murderer in court at the police officer

:00:07.:00:11.

Anthony Grainger was killed by police in 2012.

:00:12.:00:17.

An investigation is underway after a prison officer

:00:18.:00:21.

is slashed across the neck by an inmate in Liverpool.

:00:22.:00:26.

The Government urges the RMT Union to call-off

:00:27.:00:30.

Saturday's strike as talks with rail companies collapse.

:00:31.:00:33.

It's 40 years since the Grand National's greatest horse

:00:34.:00:38.

In racing, he is the one horse that everybody can remember.

:00:39.:01:02.

The mother of an an armed man who was shot by police today shouted

:01:03.:01:11.

murderer at the officer who was the trigger. The officer said he would

:01:12.:01:16.

do the same again to the public enquiry. He said he thought he

:01:17.:01:19.

thought Anthony Grainger was reaching for a gun and that is why

:01:20.:01:21.

he started shooting. Our social affairs correspondent

:01:22.:01:24.

Clare Fallon was at the hearing - and is live for us this evening -

:01:25.:01:27.

and emotions running They were. This was the day the

:01:28.:01:37.

family of Anthony Grainger have waited for four more than five

:01:38.:01:41.

years, a date where they got to hear the police officer who pooled the

:01:42.:01:46.

trigger gave an account of his actions. He has been granted

:01:47.:01:51.

anonymity and gave his evidence from behind a curtain. He said he was

:01:52.:01:54.

part of the Greater Manchester Police team who were sent out in

:01:55.:02:00.

March 20 12th to tackle a suspected armed robbery. He said he was

:02:01.:02:03.

certain Anthony Grainger had a gun and that when he opened fire, he

:02:04.:02:08.

thought his colleagues were in extreme danger. We now know that

:02:09.:02:14.

there was no gun. He said he was also left devastated by what

:02:15.:02:17.

happened. Asked if he would do the same thing again, he said he would.

:02:18.:02:23.

That is when there was an angry response from Anthony Grainger's

:02:24.:02:28.

mum. She shouted out murderer, that is what you are. This is all a

:02:29.:02:33.

farce. Everyone in this court knows you murdered my son. Also in the

:02:34.:02:37.

courtroom today listening to the evidence was Anthony Grainger's

:02:38.:02:41.

partner. She gave me her response after hearing. Even though it has

:02:42.:02:47.

been established that the intelligence was inaccurate, and

:02:48.:02:51.

that is the word that was used, he still says he would do it again

:02:52.:02:55.

knowing that he acted on flawed intelligence. He did not see a gun

:02:56.:03:01.

or any weapons. There was no justification at all. Knowing he was

:03:02.:03:10.

less than ten feet away from hiding behind a curtain, if you generally

:03:11.:03:14.

thinks what he did was right and he would do it again and he acted on

:03:15.:03:20.

his true belief, why is he hiding? This has been going on for some

:03:21.:03:23.

time. You heard about what happened in the days after the shooting. We

:03:24.:03:29.

did. We heard about a meeting between this officer and a police

:03:30.:03:34.

officer from the Metropolitan Police, who shot a man called Mark

:03:35.:03:39.

Duggan. That was a very high profile police shooting. That meeting

:03:40.:03:43.

happened five days after Anthony Grainger was shot. That meeting was

:03:44.:03:48.

about welfare and support, it was said. Those men have since become

:03:49.:03:53.

friends. He has since met the police officer who shot in London. It

:03:54.:04:00.

sounds like there is a little club of you fire arms officers who should

:04:01.:04:08.

people, it was said. It will continue until the end of this

:04:09.:04:09.

month. Merseyside Police say a fire -

:04:10.:04:11.

which forced a family, from their home last night -

:04:12.:04:15.

was started deliberately. Police believe the house in Seaforth

:04:16.:04:19.

was mistakenly targeted by two men. Armed police have been called

:04:20.:04:22.

to a flat above a restaurant The officers in several vehicles

:04:23.:04:25.

arrived in Main Street just after 10 Police say there's no

:04:26.:04:30.

risk to the public. Inspectors have praised the work

:04:31.:04:38.

of the new management team for South Lakes Safari Zoo

:04:39.:04:48.

and highly encouraged An investigation has begun

:04:57.:04:58.

after a prison officer was slashed across the throat by an inmate

:04:59.:05:01.

at the privately-run Altcourse The wounded officer

:05:02.:05:03.

is now recovering. The attack comes amid growing

:05:04.:05:06.

concern about violence Our reporter Juliet Phillips

:05:07.:05:08.

is outside HMP Altcourse now. What more can you tell

:05:09.:05:14.

us about this attack? The incident happened at around half

:05:15.:05:30.

past four yesterday afternoon. A prisoner was moved to a holding area

:05:31.:05:33.

where it was thought he was going to be moved to another prison. It was

:05:34.:05:39.

there that the prison guard was slashed in the throat with a razor

:05:40.:05:44.

type object. He was later taken to hospital. The prisoner, who is

:05:45.:05:50.

alleged to be involved in this attack, we know is already facing

:05:51.:05:55.

serious charges. The guard was taken to hospital yesterday and later

:05:56.:05:59.

allowed to return home. This is not the first time that the present has

:06:00.:06:02.

been at the centre of controversy, is it? -- be present. Back in 2015,

:06:03.:06:14.

the prison had some issues with violence on site. There were around

:06:15.:06:20.

414 assaults that year, according to Government figures. The Government

:06:21.:06:27.

doing the prison has had issues with items being smuggled in. The prison

:06:28.:06:32.

had to go into lockdown because two knives were thrown over the prison

:06:33.:06:37.

wall and packages. The prison is managed by G four S, who have very

:06:38.:06:42.

strongly following this attack today. They say there is no place in

:06:43.:06:47.

our prison committee for violent behaviour and we will always work

:06:48.:06:53.

with the police and wish for the possible sanctions in court for

:06:54.:06:56.

prisoners to undermine safety. The police investigation into this

:06:57.:06:57.

incident continues. Britain's biggest union says it's

:06:58.:06:59.

worried about the jobs of nearly three thousand people

:07:00.:07:03.

in the North West who work There are growing fears the Bank,

:07:04.:07:05.

which employs staff in Manchester, Stockport and Skelmersdale,

:07:06.:07:09.

is about to collapse. Today the Co-op group revealed

:07:10.:07:13.

that its stake in the Bank It's written off its

:07:14.:07:20.

20% shareholding, putting the Group into the red

:07:21.:07:28.

for the first time in four years. Business as usual was the message

:07:29.:07:31.

from the Co-op headquarters in Manchester today

:07:32.:07:35.

After the group announced a pretax The group grew from the consumer

:07:38.:07:40.

with the aim of creating an ethical But in recent years, the Coop Bank

:07:41.:07:43.

has struggled to survive. The bank's impact is disappointing

:07:44.:07:54.

on the group. We have taken decision to write down our value in the bank.

:07:55.:07:58.

It does not reflect the great year the Co-op has had.

:07:59.:08:00.

division are all doing well with strong sales.

:08:01.:08:05.

The bank was part of that group, but was rescued by US investors

:08:06.:08:08.

Since then, the Co-op Group has only been a minority shareholder,

:08:09.:08:12.

And now it's reduced the value of that stake from ?185m to zero.

:08:13.:08:19.

The bank has been looking for buyers since February.

:08:20.:08:21.

Last month the BBC revealed Bank of England contingency plans

:08:22.:08:24.

to ensure the "orderly failure" of the Coop bank are well advanced.

:08:25.:08:31.

Its Chief Executive insists there is real value in its ethical

:08:32.:08:34.

position and customer relationships which set it apart and provide

:08:35.:08:36.

strong future potential, saying they are focused

:08:37.:08:39.

on the interests of all our stakeholders.

:08:40.:08:43.

If it collapsed, customers would be protected.

:08:44.:08:49.

But the Unite union, which represents some

:08:50.:08:50.

of the bank workers, is concerned for their future.

:08:51.:08:55.

A collapse would be devastating for bank workers in Manchester and the

:08:56.:09:02.

north-west. There are four and a half thousand people employed by the

:09:03.:09:06.

co-operative bank. They would be a wider concern about the contagion

:09:07.:09:10.

that would be generated by a collapse of a major UK banks.

:09:11.:09:16.

The bank says there could be an announcement

:09:17.:09:18.

The police have released dramatic video footage of a gang

:09:19.:09:22.

from Merseyside using explosives to blow open cash machines.

:09:23.:09:27.

The men stole half a million pounds in a series of robberies from

:09:28.:09:30.

They were caught after an operation involving armed officers

:09:31.:09:34.

Seven men will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court

:09:35.:09:37.

Two men, their faces hidden by protective clothing,

:09:38.:09:44.

are trying to make a hole in the front of a cash machine.

:09:45.:09:47.

What looks like a crow bar is used to prize open a gap.

:09:48.:09:50.

A rubber pipe is attached and oxyacetyline pumped inside.

:09:51.:09:54.

Moments later, an explosion gives them access to the money inside.

:09:55.:10:00.

Here's what it looks like from the other side.

:10:01.:10:02.

A safe that looks solid is torn apart in the blast.

:10:03.:10:04.

The men cut their way into the building and helped

The gang targeted cash machines all over the country from Aberdeen in

the north to Reading in the south of England. This Co-op in Cheshire was

:10:20.:10:24.

hit twice in the space of six months. Attempts to catch those

involved included a 150 mile an hour car chase in the dead of night.

:10:30.:10:34.

The horse with the Gamay leg, trained by a taxi driver on a beach

:22:26.:22:30.

amazed the horse came home fit and well. 40 years on, Michael Burns

:22:31.:22:35.

returns to the spot used it that day. His grandfather owned the horse

:22:36.:22:42.

the father knew as Read. My father was 89 years of age. The only time I

:22:43.:22:51.

saw him move was he did as he crossed the line, you got up and

:22:52.:22:55.

raised his arms and sat down again. The celebrations were more rockers

:22:56.:23:01.

that evening when they moved to the hotel in Southport. They had to take

:23:02.:23:05.

the doors off the main doors of the hotel so the horse could come in and

:23:06.:23:09.

there were people shouting and screaming and patting him on the

:23:10.:23:13.

neck and all of this. He stood there for about an hour in the ball room

:23:14.:23:18.

and I could not believe the crowd that were there clapping him and the

:23:19.:23:23.

horrors just stood. You were to think he was a saint. -- the horse

:23:24.:23:31.

just stood there. It was 40 years since Red Rum ran down here for the

:23:32.:23:36.

final time. The impact the horrors made on this course and this city

:23:37.:23:42.

lives on. I take two is around the race course and I come to the statue

:23:43.:23:48.

and see this as the horse you have to thank. Every time I get letters

:23:49.:23:59.

in and a month ago I got somebody from New Zealand. There will never

:24:00.:24:05.

be a horse like him again. My grandfather owned lots of people

:24:06.:24:12.

felt he was part of them. He was very special. Red Rum is buried

:24:13.:24:18.

beside the winning post. The horse that saved Aintree. The horse that

:24:19.:24:26.

made the Grand National. Wonderful memories of Red Rum. We have had

:24:27.:24:33.

some coming in. Ken says that he has a special place in his heart as he

:24:34.:24:38.

got married on the day of his first national win. That was 1973. 44

:24:39.:24:46.

years. They had their 44th wedding anniversary not too long ago. Phil

:24:47.:24:51.

says it is 50 years to the day as Red Rum made his debut. He was a

:24:52.:24:58.

winner in 73, 74, second and 75, when in 77. We have not done enough

:24:59.:25:04.

about Aintree this week. We are going to find out

:25:05.:25:05.

what the weather is going to be like. All of my friends had the

:25:06.:25:12.

Osmonds and David Cassidy on the wall, I had read Rum. Much prettier.

:25:13.:25:18.

You like your horses, don't you? I do indeed. If you are heading to

:25:19.:25:22.

racing at Aintree as we go through the next couple of days, we are glad

:25:23.:25:26.

to see the forecast going up. Sunshine through the afternoon but

:25:27.:25:30.

Saturday we will see a marked improvement. Things are going to

:25:31.:25:34.

improve. The Weather Watcher pictures are looking very lovely and

:25:35.:25:39.

part of the region. Language so the of the weather. -- Lancashire. It

:25:40.:25:47.

changes over the next couple of days and if you follow the lines of the

:25:48.:25:51.

ice of buyers as it tracks across the country, that is when the cloud

:25:52.:25:55.

cover starts to them and break and were sent on coming through. For the

:25:56.:25:59.

next couple of days, things will get better. That area of high-pressure

:26:00.:26:04.

blocks as through the weekend. As we start the working week next week,

:26:05.:26:07.

the temperatures will fall away and the rain will return. It is all

:26:08.:26:12.

about the cloud cover. Many chilly start to the day. Through this

:26:13.:26:16.

evening and overnight, nothing really changes. It was almost

:26:17.:26:20.

blanket cloud cover and it is sticking with us. Temperatures are

:26:21.:26:25.

sticking up. That is positive of having the cloud cover in the

:26:26.:26:31.

overnight period. Temperatures of seven or eight Celsius tomorrow.

:26:32.:26:37.

Drizzle working its way in. For most of us, a repeat of this morning. A

:26:38.:26:45.

gloomy morning. It will start to lose the cloud cover. More of a

:26:46.:26:51.

south westerly wind. As the cloud comes towards us, here come the

:26:52.:26:56.

spells of sunshine. Through the afternoon, more optimistic for

:26:57.:27:01.

brighter skies. The temperatures. Still a chill in the day. 12 or 13

:27:02.:27:06.

Celsius at the very best. This is when the picture starts to get

:27:07.:27:14.

better. A quiet night into Saturday morning. That all-important wind

:27:15.:27:17.

direction, the cloud cover will thin and break and brighter skies. By

:27:18.:27:22.

Sunday we could have 18 Celsius. That's lovely. That is very warm,

:27:23.:27:29.

isn't it? Other parts of the country is warmer. It will be ladies Day.

:27:30.:27:36.

Will they be topping up their tans? Fable have come spray tanned anyway.

:27:37.:27:43.

-- the all will have come spray tanned. Much safer anyway. Thank you

:27:44.:27:45.

for watching. Good night. Stacey and Chris are preparing for

:27:46.:27:56.

marriage by spending a few days living alone with

:27:57.:27:58.

their in-laws to be, and asking them all kinds of

:27:59.:28:01.

questions. Did you get a kiss on

:28:02.:28:04.

the first date? No. What does their in-laws' marriage

:28:05.:28:06.

tell them about each other's I expect you'll want to become

:28:07.:28:09.

a schoolmaster, sir. That's what most of the gentlemen

:28:10.:28:18.

does that get sent down
