Tributes have been paid to the lead singer

of the Liverpool band Dead or Alive, Pete Burns who's died.

His management say he suffered a massive cardiac arrest yesterday.

Friends and family say they're devastated by his

Mark Edwardson's been looking back at his career.

Always an eye catcher - eternally controversial.

Pete Burns came to national fame as the flamboyant front man

of Liverpool's Dead Or Alivd - a pioneering hi-energy hit -

and the first UK number one for the Hit Factory producthon team,

Like David Bowie, he was thd last of the guys who wanted to do it their

way and there were no compromises. There were no compromises whth Pete.

He was unmanageable. He had to do everything his own way.

Before national exposure, Pete Burns was well known

on the Liverpool music scend - often seen behind the countdr

His friends from that scene have been paying tribute.

A musician for more than 30 years - a Pete Burns anthology was due to be

Joining me now is John Robb - musician and journalist

Thank you very much for comhng in. Tell others about your earlhest

meetings and memories of thd Burns. We used to go down to Probe records

in London. Behind the countdr, he was absolutely legendary. Hd would

always say, "What are you btying that for?" He was a terrifyhng

presence. A lot of people I went with it wouldn't take their record

up to the counter. He was terrifying. He was told. Yot'd never

seen anyone like him. He had an utterly original appearance. There

was nothing like that. Lookhng back, he was the first. The originator.

Before the likes of boy George and Steve strange in London? Thdre is a

strong argument for that. Lhverpool had this really amazing post punk

micro culture. Really incredible people like

Peter, Jaynje Casey and Petd Wylie. He was the original. A lot of people

will know him from reality TV. Do you think his music was his legacy?

He looked incredible. He was like a completely walking piece of art He

changed every month. His luck was changed every month. His luck was

completely exotic and incredible. He looked great. He could even go on

top of the Pops with a pullover on because he was a beautiful lan. But

he took it to extremes. Anybody created to be a pop star, it was

him. Thank you very much indeed Two people are still missing

after fire gutted a house It's not known whether the owners -

a couple believed to be in their 60s or 70s -

were in the house in Merseyside Fire Service

says its officers had previously warned the couple that hoarding

items inside the house was creating The fire quickly engulfed

the house on Mather Avenue. A passing motorist dialled 899

after spotting smoke just bdfore Firefighters were

on the scene eight minutes later. We are three doors down.

We were out when the fire started. We came home on the bus

and we thought We learned from somebody else

on the street it wasn't. It was the house

with the yellow car. We knew it was occupied by people

who didn't go out very much. Knowing what we know of the people,

it seemed quite likely It was very shocking.

days before they manage to `ccess They don't know whether

the occupants of the house They know they have a daughter

but haven't been able Neighbours had been in cont`ct

with the city council were hoarding large amounts

of possessions at the property. Due to the large amount of hoarding

material in the property and the subsequent collapse

of the first We have struggled to gain access but we are working

in unison with Merseyside Police and a demolition

company to affect access. Officers had previously

visited the house but had As the couple owned it,

they would have had to obtahn a warrant to get in and had not

yet been able to do so. The Fire Service have attempted

to come to the property on numerous occasions,

we were last here in July, H think, As a private property,

we don't have the same powers but we have been and given

advice to the owners. The building is now being dhsmantled

to make it safe for fire officers A man's appeared in court

a new power cable underground to preserve the beauty

of the Lake District Nation`l Park. But it still plans to build

huge new pylons across Our Chief Reporter,

the new power line is needed. It's a nuclear power station

which is due to be built ne`r to They'll have to get

the electricity generated hdre It's a massive project and

one that's proving controversial. It's just a disaster for

the landscape of the Duddon Estuary. Part of the proposal

involves putting up giant straight through

the picturesque Furness penhnsula. Today, those concerned

about the plan were invited to this hotel in Kendal to discover

exactly what the National Grid They discovered the company had made

some changes to its original plans. For instance, they've deciddd

to bury a 14-mile stretch along the western fringe

of the Lake District Nation`l Park. That's on top of the money

they've already agreed to sink into a 13-mile

tunnel beneath Morecambe Bax. However, they still plan to run

an overground section About quarter of the route will be

underground and out of sight. The rest of the route,

we think we can replace the existing line with biggdr pylons

but a lot fewer of them. When he says bigger,

he means they could be almost twice the size of the existing pylons

in the Duddon Estuuary. We need to push them

to the final solution. National Grid say they will be

starting a public consultathon at the end of this week and it

will run through till early January. They hope to submit a formal

planning application during 201 . Their main aim is to try to get

construction underway during 20 9. Dave Guest,
