A court's heard how a young man fell to his death when he tried to escape

:00:13.:00:19.

from a lift that got stuck in an apartment building in Bolton.

:00:20.:00:22.

Craig Jones was 27 - he fell five floors,

:00:23.:00:25.

suffering injuries so severe he died later in hospital.

:00:26.:00:28.

Our social affairs correspondant Clare Fallon

:00:29.:00:30.

has been at Bolton Crown Court for us today.

:00:31.:00:35.

Craig Jones has been described as a man who was full

:00:36.:00:38.

He worked as a plasterer and he lived in an apartment block

:00:39.:00:44.

that is only a couple of hundred metres from where I'm standing

:00:45.:00:47.

And, back in 2014, he got stuck in one of the lifts

:00:48.:00:51.

Now, in court we heard that there were previous

:00:52.:00:55.

People have been stuck in them before.

:00:56.:00:59.

On occasions, fire crews have been called out to rescue people.

:01:00.:01:03.

In addition, there was a problem with the emergency call button.

:01:04.:01:06.

And, so, on this occasion, Craig Jones decided to try and get

:01:07.:01:10.

He managed to get the doors open and he tried to lower himself out

:01:11.:01:16.

but he fell about five floors and suffered injuries that

:01:17.:01:25.

were so serious he couldn't be saved.

:01:26.:01:27.

Now, the company with responsibility for managing that apartment

:01:28.:01:31.

building, for ensuring its safety, Warwick Estates has pleaded guilty

:01:32.:01:34.

We were expecting the company to be sentenced today for.

:01:35.:01:39.

For the judge to say how much that company will have

:01:40.:01:42.

But towards the end of the day in court, the judge said

:01:43.:01:47.

that he simply needs more time to consider that sentence.

:01:48.:01:49.

That may now happen tomorrow or the delay may be further.

:01:50.:01:52.

Of course, Craig Jones's family came here today hoping

:01:53.:01:54.

that they would get some closure, hoping that, by this evening,

:01:55.:01:57.

they would know what punishment had been handed out but now we'll have

:01:58.:02:00.

A drink-driver who killed a woman in a hit-and-run incident

:02:01.:02:06.

in Greater Manchester has been jailed for six years.

:02:07.:02:09.

Susan Smythe was walking home from playing bingo

:02:10.:02:11.

when she was hit by a speeding car in Stretford in September.

:02:12.:02:15.

Paul Tomlinson from Sale Moor was sentenced to six years,

:02:16.:02:19.

but could be released in three, which has angered

:02:20.:02:22.

The justice system stinks in this country.

:02:23.:02:27.

For taking someone's life, three years is nothing.

:02:28.:02:31.

and her children are doing the life sentence too.

:02:32.:02:38.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder -

:02:39.:02:43.

after the death of a man following a large fight

:02:44.:02:46.

The 31-year-old was found with serious head injuries

:02:47.:02:49.

Police are are asking for witnesses to come forward -

:02:50.:02:55.

as its thought there were up ten men involved in the disturbance.

:02:56.:03:13.

a drugs fugitive has been sentenced to 13 years. A consignment of

:03:14.:03:23.

cocaine from Tilbury docks was found in November 20 13.

:03:24.:03:28.

A new trial of technology which could help hundreds

:03:29.:03:30.

of thousands of blind people to get some sight back

:03:31.:03:33.

Initial trials on the so-called "bionic eye" have been

:03:34.:03:36.

so successful, the NHS is now funding further research.

:03:37.:03:38.

Our Health Correspondent Gill Dummigan reports.

:03:39.:03:39.

Keith Hayman from Fleetwood suffers from a rare progressive condition

:03:40.:03:42.

In the mid '80s, he finally went blind,

:03:43.:03:48.

and that's how he stayed for the next 30 years.

:03:49.:03:51.

I've missed seeing my grandchildren grow up.

:03:52.:03:55.

That's the biggest heartache, really.

:03:56.:03:57.

But in 2009, Keith had a revolutionary operation

:03:58.:03:59.

at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital.

:04:00.:04:03.

Surgeons implanted a chip like this at the back of his eye,

:04:04.:04:06.

which has allowed him to see light and shapes.

:04:07.:04:09.

Not full sight, but still a life-changing improvement.

:04:10.:04:13.

It just gives you more of an interest,

:04:14.:04:16.

because instead of walking around in total darkness everywhere,

:04:17.:04:19.

you have got all these shapes to work out what they are.

:04:20.:04:25.

You know, windows and lights and people, cars, everything.

:04:26.:04:30.

The system uses special glasses with a built-in video camera.

:04:31.:04:33.

That sends wireless signals to that chip implanted on Keith's retina.

:04:34.:04:39.

The chip then helps send that visual information to the brain.

:04:40.:04:43.

Keith's operation was funded by the company

:04:44.:04:45.

This new trial with five patients, also with the same condition,

:04:46.:04:49.

the technology could eventually become widely available.

:04:50.:04:58.

Retinitis Pigmentosa, the condition which Keith

:04:59.:05:00.

and the five patients in this new trial suffer from, is fairly rare.

:05:01.:05:06.

But there's a second trial being run here to see how the same technology

:05:07.:05:10.

can help people with Age-Related Macular Degeneration,

:05:11.:05:13.

the most common cause of sight loss in the UK,

:05:14.:05:17.

I think a lot of ophthalmologists think this is in the realms

:05:18.:05:25.

of science fiction, but it's very much become science fact.

:05:26.:05:27.

So we are very, very excited about it.

:05:28.:05:34.

Keith helped researchers shape this technology.

:05:35.:05:36.

The hope is that, within a few years,

:05:37.:05:40.

the benefits he's had from it can be shared with thousands of others.

:05:41.:05:47.

The Food Standards Agency has begun an investigation after six food

:05:48.:05:50.

It's believed the cause of the outbreak of the campylobacter

:05:51.:05:56.

bacteria is the consumption of raw milk from a vending machine

:05:57.:05:59.

South Lakeland council says the owner is helping

:06:00.:06:05.

with the investigation and has suspended the sale of raw

:06:06.:06:07.

The Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General will be known

:06:08.:06:13.

as Teaching Hospitals from now on to reflect their

:06:14.:06:15.

The East Lancashire Trust, which runs the hospitals,

:06:16.:06:18.

says they already have a well established reputation for providing

:06:19.:06:22.

placements for students and they're significantly increasing the number

:06:23.:06:24.

Iran Air has placed a multi-billion pound order for 100 new Airbus jets.

:06:25.:06:33.

The wings will be built at the company's plant

:06:34.:06:35.

Airbus is one of many western businesses attempting to take

:06:36.:06:40.

advantage of the easing of international

:06:41.:06:41.

Dianne will be here in a moment to tell us more

:06:42.:06:49.

about Storm Barbara, but first - in a few days' time,

:06:50.:06:52.

many communities in the north west will be marking the first

:06:53.:06:55.

anniversary of the devastating Boxing Day floods.

:06:56.:06:56.

One of the Lancashire villages hardest hit

:06:57.:06:58.

Today a new flood defence system aimed at protecting

:06:59.:07:02.

The new flood defence for Croston has been built a couple of miles

:07:03.:07:10.

From today, it protects 400 properties to

:07:11.:07:17.

The Environment Agency spent ?6 million building a dam which will

:07:18.:07:21.

hold back the river Yarrow if needed.

:07:22.:07:24.

One of the problems is that when heavy rain produces surface

:07:25.:07:26.

water, which would normally run into the river,

:07:27.:07:30.

if the river is full, it has nowhere to go.

:07:31.:07:38.

Now these new gates can be closed, damming the

:07:39.:07:40.

river here so thought water builds up further upstream, meaning there

:07:41.:07:43.

is more room further downstream in Croston

:07:44.:07:45.

Last December, it was one of many Northwest communities affected

:07:46.:07:52.

One community leader said the floods caused huge stress for many people,

:07:53.:08:03.

some of whom are not in their house now.

:08:04.:08:05.

She is confident the new scheme will work.

:08:06.:08:07.

People often stand here and say, it could not possibly have

:08:08.:08:10.

If we had that amount of rain again, their steam would cope with it.

:08:11.:08:27.

Storm Barbara could affect the north-west tomorrow.

:08:28.:08:32.

Ferries to and from the Isle of Man are likely to

:08:33.:08:35.

An extra freight ship has been brought in to

:08:36.:08:41.

mate sure that supplies storage the island.

:08:42.:08:45.

Bad weather and Christmas traffic mean some road journeys

:08:46.:08:47.

could take three times longer than normal.

:08:48.:08:51.

The M6 between Stoke and Warrington is expected to be one of

:08:52.:09:00.

the busiest routes, the M60 and M62 near Rochdale

:09:01.:09:02.

Get onto our website or download our app

:09:03.:09:08.

and look at the route you have

:09:09.:09:11.

to take and plan your journey on plenty of time.

:09:12.:09:14.

Engineering work and station closures will affect some

:09:15.:09:16.

A planned strike by British Airways cabin crew is due

:09:17.:09:24.

All eyes are on Storm Barbara as she works her way

:09:25.:09:38.

across the North West of England as we go through tomorrow.

:09:39.:09:41.

The Met Office are warning that there could be winds gusting

:09:42.:09:44.

50-60 miles an hour and even 70, which could cause significant

:09:45.:09:47.

After that, well, Saturday still a bright blustery day

:09:48.:09:52.

with one or two showers but for Christmas Day,

:09:53.:09:54.

I'm afraid there is another storm coming towards us bringing very

:09:55.:09:58.

At the minute, the showers have moved away, so we're dry.

:09:59.:10:04.

That's how we're staying through the night.

:10:05.:10:07.

That's the exception, rather than the rule.

:10:08.:10:11.

Many towns and cities between three and 5 degrees.

:10:12.:10:13.

Heading toward dawn, will see one or two showers

:10:14.:10:15.

starting to break out, particularly in parts of Cumbria.

:10:16.:10:18.

But if you're up early, then maybe a couple of spells

:10:19.:10:20.

But this is the big story, Storm Barbara.

:10:21.:10:27.

Lunchtime until six o'clock tomorrow evening, that's when the winds

:10:28.:10:29.

One or two spells of sunshine through the morning

:10:30.:10:33.

but as the afternoon goes on, the rain starts to work its way in.

:10:34.:10:36.

It's going to be fairly fast moving but with some pretty heavy

:10:37.:10:39.

Once again, let me just remind you, those gusts of wind,

:10:40.:10:43.

50-60 mph and potentially up to 70, as well.

:10:44.:10:45.

But with some disruption on the cards, BBC local radio

:10:46.:10:50.

stations the best place to get the updates.

:10:51.:10:52.

itself, it's not white, but it's warm. Temperatures could reach 15.

:10:53.:11:10.

I suppose you could say today was the calm before the storm. A winter

:11:11.:11:17.

chill, plenty of sunshine, but more wintry showers in

:11:18.:11:18.
