For months now, the stickers on egg cartons have told us the hens that

:00:15.:00:20.

laid them were being kept indoors for their own safety.

:00:21.:00:22.

But now, after tens of thousands of birds were culled in Lancashire

:00:23.:00:25.

because of avian flu, the restrictions have been relaxed,

:00:26.:00:27.

and the birds are allowed back outdoors again.

:00:28.:00:29.

Our environment correspondent Judy Hobson is at a poultry

:00:30.:00:31.

A taste of freedom for the first time this year.

:00:32.:00:38.

These hens are free range, but they have not been

:00:39.:00:40.

These restrictions were brought in to reduce the risk of avian flu

:00:41.:00:45.

To start with we just had to make sure they got more straw,

:00:46.:00:53.

and, as you can see, we have given them more area

:00:54.:00:56.

We give them green material as though they were outside,

:00:57.:01:04.

which is quite hard to do, but we've had plenty of cabbages

:01:05.:01:06.

and broccoli and cauliflowers and all sorts of things.

:01:07.:01:10.

In some parts of the country, restrictions were lifted six

:01:11.:01:13.

High Legh is near Rostherne Mere in Cheshire where wild birds

:01:14.:01:20.

gather, so it is classed as a high-risk area.

:01:21.:01:23.

But migrating birds have now left the country, or are breeding,

:01:24.:01:26.

All poultry are at still risk of catching bird flu,

:01:27.:01:35.

We are encouraging everybody to have high security.

:01:36.:01:44.

We want all the hens outside, make sure they are fed inside,

:01:45.:01:47.

not outside, where wild birds could be.

:01:48.:01:49.

Keep as many people off your site, only essential visitors on the site.

:01:50.:01:57.

Any feed spillages, make sure you clear them up straight away.

:01:58.:02:00.

It has been a difficult few months for the poultry industry.

:02:01.:02:03.

Despite extra measures to keep farms clean, some,

:02:04.:02:05.

like this on in Lancashire, had to cull thousands of birds.

:02:06.:02:07.

As migrating birds return later in the year, the chances of another

:02:08.:02:10.

The risk has not gone away completely.

:02:11.:02:15.

Across Europe, we still are seeing cases of the disease in kept birds,

:02:16.:02:20.

and they're still finding the disease in wild birds.

:02:21.:02:24.

Although the risk is still there, this farmer is just pleased that,

:02:25.:02:27.

for now, his hens can roam free again.

:02:28.:02:31.

Especially at this time of year, in the spring, you could tell

:02:32.:02:36.

Businesses around the North West say they're owed money after a company

:02:37.:02:47.

that built a power station in Greater Manchester

:02:48.:02:49.

went into liquidation with ?40 million in debts.

:02:50.:02:50.

Duro Felguera UK Limited was the lead contractor to build

:02:51.:02:53.

a new gas-fuelled plant, which was opened by the Energy

:02:54.:02:56.

The power station is still operating, as it's run

:02:57.:03:00.

It's the country's newest power station, built at a cost of more

:03:01.:03:09.

than ?700 million and opened exactly a month ago by the Energy Minister.

:03:10.:03:14.

The power station is still operating as normal.

:03:15.:03:17.

It's owned by an entirely separate company and is providing energy

:03:18.:03:20.

But the contractor that was in charge of building it has

:03:21.:03:26.

It was a huge project, involving 35,000 cubic metres of concrete,

:03:27.:03:33.

850 construction workers and over 40 other companies from

:03:34.:03:38.

But now many of those subcontractors are owed money.

:03:39.:03:43.

The debts in this region alone total over ?1 million.

:03:44.:03:48.

This business based in Bolton made some of the doors for

:03:49.:03:51.

We are currently owed ?90,000, including VAT.

:03:52.:03:56.

And what impact is that going to have on your company?

:03:57.:03:59.

We were going to expand this year, buy new machinery

:04:00.:04:01.

But we have basically had to put that back now six months.

:04:02.:04:06.

I'm totally disgusted with it all, to be honest.

:04:07.:04:11.

Some businesses in the north west are owed hundreds of thousands

:04:12.:04:14.

VOICE-OVER: We are an international benchmark in the construction

:04:15.:04:19.

of power stations, with over 50 projects executed in 11

:04:20.:04:22.

countries in Europe, Latin America and Africa.

:04:23.:04:26.

Duro Felguera UK Limited's parent company is based in Spain and has

:04:27.:04:30.

The liquidators say an investigation is now under way to see what,

:04:31.:04:38.

if any assets, the company still has, and whether firms

:04:39.:04:41.

Naomi Cornwell, BBC North West Tonight, in Bolton.

:04:42.:04:50.

A Catholic priest has been sentenced to 17 years for sexually abusing

:04:51.:04:53.

a teenage boy at a boarding school in Lancashire in the 1970s.

:04:54.:04:56.

74-year-old Father Michael Higginbottom was found guilty

:04:57.:04:58.

of eight sex offences at St Joseph's Roman Catholic

:04:59.:05:01.

He abused the teenager in his personal living quarters.

:05:02.:05:07.

A man from Cheshire, who knowingly sold sick and dying

:05:08.:05:10.

puppies, has been jailed for nearly three years.

:05:11.:05:12.

Jamie Parvizi, from Scholar Green pleaded guilty to welfare

:05:13.:05:15.

and fraud offences relating to the selling of dogs.

:05:16.:05:18.

It's believed to be the longest jail sentence to ever follow

:05:19.:05:20.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the death

:05:21.:05:26.

of a 20-year-old in Manchester City centre.

:05:27.:05:29.

Dylan Crawford was found unconscious on Spear Street

:05:30.:05:31.

A postmortem examination was inconclusive.

:05:32.:05:36.

The men have been arrested on suspicion of theft

:05:37.:05:39.

Workers on Arriva Rail North are staging a fresh 24-hour strike

:05:40.:05:44.

Members of the RMT union will walk out on Friday April 28th after talks

:05:45.:05:52.

They also went on strike last Saturday during the Grand National

:05:53.:05:57.

at Aintree as part of a campaign against new driver-controlled trains

:05:58.:06:00.

18 months after a public health drive started in Stockport,

:06:01.:06:07.

those behind it say it's working and getting people on their

:06:08.:06:10.

It's reckoned illnesses stemming from unhealthy lifestyles

:06:11.:06:14.

are costing the NHS around ?11 billion a year.

:06:15.:06:17.

Now in the town, they're recruiting hundreds more volunteers

:06:18.:06:19.

Here's our health correspondent Gill Dummigan.

:06:20.:06:27.

These days, Laura's fizzing with energy.

:06:28.:06:29.

18 months ago, she was a size 20 and struggling to get

:06:30.:06:32.

I wouldn't have walked any further than I really needed to.

:06:33.:06:38.

I certainly wouldn't have run anywhere, certainly wouldn't have

:06:39.:06:40.

Then she learned about a new fitness programme

:06:41.:06:45.

It has changed my outlook, my health.

:06:46.:06:48.

Meanwhile, staff at Stepping Hill are among the 500 newbies now

:06:49.:06:54.

stepping up in the next wave of recruits.

:06:55.:06:56.

For some, it's a bit of a departure from the usual.

:06:57.:07:02.

Sitting down on my PlayStation, just playing video games,

:07:03.:07:05.

eating junk food, not really doing a lot of exercise,

:07:06.:07:07.

I just want to keep going, really and just keep trying to work

:07:08.:07:12.

up a little bit of a sweat like this

:07:13.:07:14.

It makes me feel better about everything.

:07:15.:07:17.

The people behind this scheme say it is not about being a gym bunny,

:07:18.:07:20.

it's about incorporating exercise into your daily life,

:07:21.:07:22.

the theory being that the more you spend doing this, the less likely

:07:23.:07:26.

To me, it is more about staff being a role model.

:07:27.:07:30.

We know that one of the key things people are coming

:07:31.:07:33.

into hospital with are strokes, heart problems, and a lot

:07:34.:07:35.

So anything that people can do to help themselves

:07:36.:07:40.

and not come into hospital is a really good thing.

:07:41.:07:43.

More than 20 of the town's firms have signed up

:07:44.:07:45.

to the programme, devised by a local not-for-profit group.

:07:46.:07:47.

They do run gyms, but mainly they use phone apps and online coaching

:07:48.:07:50.

to support people who don't generally do fitness.

:07:51.:07:52.

What happens if you don't exercise a lot, and you're literally

:07:53.:07:57.

You need somebody there to hold your hand and motivate

:07:58.:08:01.

And more importantly, it is about changing your behaviour.

:08:02.:08:06.

This is not about quick fixes, this is about long-term behaviour change.

:08:07.:08:11.

The hope is that hundreds more in this town will make

:08:12.:08:13.

Gill Dummigan, BBC North West Today, Stockport.

:08:14.:08:21.

Manchester United are level at 1-1 going into the second leg

:08:22.:08:23.

of their Europa League quarter final with Anderlecht.

:08:24.:08:25.

Mkhitaryan opened the scoring for United, with Dendoncker equalising

:08:26.:08:30.

That was Anderlecht's only chance of the game.

:08:31.:08:40.

In the Championship tonight, Wigan came from 2-0 down

:08:41.:08:42.

Nick Powell scored a hatrick for the Latics, his third

:08:43.:08:45.

That means Wigan are now third from bottom

:08:46.:08:48.

They play a crucial game at Nottingham Forest tomrrow,

:08:49.:08:51.

and you can hera that match in full on BBC Radio Lancashire.

:08:52.:08:58.

And in League One, Caullum Camps scored for Rochdale

:08:59.:09:00.

In the Super League tonight, Warrington won away

:09:01.:09:07.

Widnes did take the lead, but afer Tom Lineham

:09:08.:09:11.

scored for Warrington, they never let the lead

:09:12.:09:13.

slip and went on to win by 19 points to ten.

:09:14.:09:20.

Now time to head over to the weather.

:09:21.:09:26.

Very mixed. Good evening. We have been telling you every day this week

:09:27.:09:32.

that it is chilly and it stays chilly as we had to do the weekend.

:09:33.:09:39.

Went going through the Northwest, dragging in cool. We have also got

:09:40.:09:43.

weather fronts coming towards us from time to time. It bring quite a

:09:44.:09:50.

when Dave tomorrow. By Monday, fingers crossed things will be

:09:51.:09:53.

drier. There will be some sunshine from time to time. Some detail.

:09:54.:10:00.

Spots of rain have started to work their way into Cumbria, Lancashire,

:10:01.:10:03.

parts of the Isle of Man. That happens over the next couple of

:10:04.:10:08.

hours. Many places will be drier, see you can see it is a 50-50 split.

:10:09.:10:13.

Overnight, temperatures about seven, eight Celsius. When you get up first

:10:14.:10:18.

thing, you can already see the line of framework in its way towards us.

:10:19.:10:24.

A bit of a nuisance, plenty of cloud cover, nothing in the way of

:10:25.:10:29.

sunshine. In the afternoon, it picks up, so there may be a lull in the

:10:30.:10:34.

morning, in the afternoon there could be heavy bursts from time

:10:35.:10:39.

time. Stiff, westerly breeze. Tomorrow night, there will be some

:10:40.:10:45.

showers at first, but temperatures will be a little bit lower. Saturday

:10:46.:10:50.

morning, Saturday will be a little bit cooler, but going through the

:10:51.:10:55.

day, fingers crossed, the cloud will break, brighter skies will come.

:10:56.:11:00.

More detail as you are moving around in the national picture.

:11:01.:11:06.

We will keep you updated. Now with the National Outlook, Tomasz

:11:07.:11:07.
