Greater Manchester Police say they dealt with 31 calls relating | :00:11. | :00:13.
to the synthetic drug Spice in just 24 hours yesterday. | :00:14. | :00:17.
Officers in Manchester city centre have launched special patrols, | :00:18. | :00:19.
these people are users of Spice, a synthetic drug which used to be | :00:20. | :00:28.
legal, known to cause extreme effects including psychosis | :00:29. | :00:32.
You see a lot of people who get absolutely smashed out | :00:33. | :00:38.
of their trees, throwing up and falling all over the place. | :00:39. | :00:40.
I just have a smoke and just relax, you know, like... | :00:41. | :00:45.
Basically, it's an escape route from the normalcy of life, | :00:46. | :00:49.
This weekend, Greater Manchester Police took 31 calls about people | :00:50. | :00:57.
14 of them had collapsed and needed an ambulance. | :00:58. | :01:02.
On this glorious day here in Piccadilly Gardens, | :01:03. | :01:05.
shoppers are being entertained, but, at the same time, | :01:06. | :01:09.
police are out here and there's quite a presence. | :01:10. | :01:11.
It's because Piccadilly Gardens has been quite a problem area when it | :01:12. | :01:15.
Over this weekend, police have had special extra patrols on here, | :01:16. | :01:20.
and have revealed they've made a number of arrests | :01:21. | :01:23.
Police say their focus is on dealers of Spice, | :01:24. | :01:28.
but they'll continue to tackle all anti-social users of the drug. | :01:29. | :01:32.
Shabnam Younus-Jewell, BBC North West Tonight, Manchester. | :01:33. | :01:37.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder | :01:38. | :01:40.
after the body of a woman was found in Speke early this morning. | :01:41. | :01:43.
Detectives were called out to a house in Heaton Close | :01:44. | :01:45.
A postmortem examination is taking place to establish how | :01:46. | :01:51.
Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a scrap yard at Altham | :01:52. | :01:55.
in Lancashire where as many as 50 cars are thought to be on fire. | :01:56. | :01:59.
Eight appliances have been there since around 5.30 this evening, | :02:00. | :02:01.
and the operation is expected to continue for some time. | :02:02. | :02:03.
People living nearby are advised to keep windows and doors shut. | :02:04. | :02:07.
Hundreds of people have turned out this weekend for | :02:08. | :02:09.
It was organised by the group Surfers Against Sewage, | :02:10. | :02:13.
to highlight the rubbish littering our coastline. | :02:14. | :02:15.
Ian Haslam reports from the Fylde Coast was the venue, | :02:16. | :02:20.
This beach at Blackpool has Blue Flag status, | :02:21. | :02:22.
but, when it comes to littering, the tide is still to turn. | :02:23. | :02:27.
So, just a general bag we're just going to open. | :02:28. | :02:30.
You've got your plastics, more plastics, netting... | :02:31. | :02:31.
Throughout summer, you get your tourists coming down with disposable | :02:32. | :02:38.
barbecues and that kind of thing, and they just head off into the sand | :02:39. | :02:41.
dunes and have a nice picnic for the day, in this good weather, | :02:42. | :02:44.
and generally they don't take their litter home with them. | :02:45. | :02:49.
That is the bane of your life, isn't it? | :02:50. | :02:51.
As with other beach cleans across the region, | :02:52. | :02:54.
there's been no shortage of volunteers. | :02:55. | :02:56.
I was surprised by how much rubbish people discard. | :02:57. | :02:59.
Yeah, yeah, bottles and sweet wrappers. | :03:00. | :03:03.
There's plenty of bins along the coastline, | :03:04. | :03:05.
but you know what it's like - families are at the beach | :03:06. | :03:08.
And that, say local action groups, means an ongoing | :03:09. | :03:12.
By reducing all of the plastic and the waste, it's safer for people | :03:13. | :03:19.
to go out in the sea, which is also good for | :03:20. | :03:21.
the marine life and animals, because they are dying | :03:22. | :03:23.
It is killing thousands, hundreds of thousands | :03:24. | :03:27.
Well, the volunteers have been cleaning the beach here now | :03:28. | :03:32.
and this is what they've come back with - | :03:33. | :03:36.
around 40 bags full of waste and litter, | :03:37. | :03:38.
along with hundreds of plastic bottles, that will now be recycled. | :03:39. | :03:42.
Loads of litter down there, a big pile. | :03:43. | :03:45.
Organisers say there'll be another Big Beach Clean in the autumn. | :03:46. | :03:53.
Now let's take a look at the weather. | :03:54. | :04:04.
It has been a beautiful day across the region but can it continue? | :04:05. | :04:08.
After a warm weekend with plenty of sunshine around, | :04:09. | :04:10.
things are going to be turning noticeably cooler as we head | :04:11. | :04:13.
It's slowly going to start to sink down towards the south-east corner. | :04:14. | :04:19.
This is a cold front, so it will be introducing cooler | :04:20. | :04:21.
Mainly dry, with one or two showers dotted here and there. | :04:22. | :04:25.
Temperatures not falling away too far courtesy of that breeze, | :04:26. | :04:28.
with a minimum temperature of around six or seven Celsius. | :04:29. | :04:31.
Tomorrow, then, there will be a good deal of dry weather around, | :04:32. | :04:34.
but, on this north-westerly breeze, we may see | :04:35. | :04:36.
Some brightness, though, developing through the afternoon, | :04:37. | :04:39.
but, even in the sunshine, it won't feel particularly warm, | :04:40. | :04:41.
But a lot of dry weather to come as we head through this week. | :04:42. | :04:50.
Good evening. Was it spring or summer today? They crushed and some | :04:51. | :05:15.
of you may have been asking. A beautiful day across much of eastern | :05:16. | :05:19.
and south-eastern England. We saw highs of 25 degrees. Slightly | :05:20. | :05:26.
fresher in the north-west of England, and much fresher behind the | :05:27. | :05:29.
rain bearing weather front in the far north-west. As the front pushes | :05:30. | :05:31.
south, | :05:32. | :05:33. |
