A woman has described a new law which protects the victims | :00:12. | :00:16.
Mandy Scrivens from South Cerney suffered | :00:17. | :00:21.
terrible emotional abuse, for 12 years. | :00:22. | :00:23.
The legislation about coercive control came into force exactly | :00:24. | :00:25.
a year ago today and, because of it, Mandy's ex-partner is now in prison. | :00:26. | :00:28.
She has been speaking exclusively to our reporter, Laura Jones. | :00:29. | :00:40.
Looking forward to a brighter New Year | :00:41. | :00:41.
For Mandy and her four children, it is a fresh start, | :00:42. | :00:47.
away from her abusive and violent ex-partner. | :00:48. | :00:51.
So, Zac was about four and Lee smashed the door on Zac, | :00:52. | :00:55.
because he was so angry. He hurt Zac. | :00:56. | :01:03.
He would sometimes pick up Leon and throw him | :01:04. | :01:08.
at the top of the stairs. He is very scary. | :01:09. | :01:10.
He would not even have to touch you for you to be terrified. | :01:11. | :01:14.
His language and his body language. He is just so big. | :01:15. | :01:17.
Although Mandy's former partner was a very angry man, | :01:18. | :01:19.
he was also extremely emotionally abusive, controlling | :01:20. | :01:21.
every detail of Mandy and the children's lives. | :01:22. | :01:23.
It took years, and many attempts, before she finally | :01:24. | :01:25.
The thing with the control thing is that | :01:26. | :01:37.
they get in your head and convince you that you would never be able | :01:38. | :01:40.
to have another partner. I am actually struggling. | :01:41. | :01:43.
I struggle with relationships. He said that I could | :01:44. | :01:49.
never cope and look after the children by myself. | :01:50. | :01:53.
I would never have any money and all that sort of stuff. | :01:54. | :01:56.
I never had a car. He used to take the car. | :01:57. | :01:58.
I couldn't have a car, because he put it in his name. | :01:59. | :02:02.
Christmas and New Year can be a difficult, and often dangerous, | :02:03. | :02:06.
time of year for those living with domestic abuse. | :02:07. | :02:09.
But this year, for the first time, something has changed. | :02:10. | :02:12.
It means the sort of behaviour Mandy is describing | :02:13. | :02:14.
That new law is called the Coercive Control Act | :02:15. | :02:22.
and it is because of it that Mandy's ex, Lee Coleman, | :02:23. | :02:25.
is now serving three years in prison for his bullying and | :02:26. | :02:28.
It is a good result for Gloucestershire Police, | :02:29. | :02:32.
but investigating this sort of activity is tough. | :02:33. | :02:35.
It is a very different matter for the police | :02:36. | :02:38.
to understand and get their heads round, really. | :02:39. | :02:40.
We turn up to deal with someone who has been assaulted | :02:41. | :02:43.
If there is an injury, we can record it and ask who did it. | :02:44. | :02:49.
It is relatively straightforward and we can deal with that acute | :02:50. | :02:52.
But it is much more challenging when someone says they are living | :02:53. | :02:56.
I'm being controlled, he gives me no money, controls | :02:57. | :02:59.
who I see and is watching me on the comnputer. | :03:00. | :03:01.
That involves a whole new array of investigating techniques. | :03:02. | :03:04.
It is much more challenging and much more time-consuming. | :03:05. | :03:06.
It is quality time we need to invest in. | :03:07. | :03:11.
It has been a tremendously difficult year for Mandy, but she is | :03:12. | :03:14.
determined to put the past behind her and to focus on the future. | :03:15. | :03:17.
By speaking out, she is hoping to help others in similar situations | :03:18. | :03:20.
A man charged with the murder of his baby daughter in Bristol | :03:21. | :03:31.
on Christmas Day has made his first appearance in court. | :03:32. | :03:34.
Britton Gardens, in Kingswood, where six-month-old Aya Parker died | :03:35. | :03:41.
on Christmas morning. Police and paramedics were called | :03:42. | :03:49.
here in the early hours, but could not revive her. | :03:50. | :03:51.
Aya's death was treated as unexplained, at first, | :03:52. | :03:56.
until the results of a postmortem examination. | :03:57. | :03:59.
Her father, 33-year-old Lee Parker, was arrested. | :04:00. | :04:03.
Yesterday, he was charged and, today, he was in court. | :04:04. | :04:09.
Lee Parker's appearance here at Bristol Magistrates' Court | :04:10. | :04:12.
He confirmed his date of birth and his address. | :04:13. | :04:18.
He was told that he had been charged with the murder | :04:19. | :04:21.
of his baby daughter and that his case would be taken | :04:22. | :04:23.
Because of the Christmas break there, in practice, | :04:24. | :04:29.
that means he will be back here tomorrow morning, | :04:30. | :04:31.
Andy Howard, BBC Points West in Bristol. | :04:32. | :04:39.
A man jailed for leaving bacon at a Bristol mosque | :04:40. | :04:42.
has died in prison. Kevin Crehan, who was | :04:43. | :04:44.
35 and from Knowle, was given a 12-month | :04:45. | :04:45.
It followed an incident in which rashers of bacon | :04:46. | :04:49.
were placed on mosque door handles in Totterdown. | :04:50. | :04:53.
We understand there were no suspicious circumstances | :04:54. | :04:55.
An appeal to build a new base for Weston-Super-Mare's | :04:56. | :05:03.
lifeboat station has raised more than ?500,000. | :05:04. | :05:05.
The organisation has being trying to find a permanent home | :05:06. | :05:07.
12 possible sites have been rejected, but the RNLI says it hopes | :05:08. | :05:11.
to make an announcement in the New Year. | :05:12. | :05:17.
Now with a look at the weather across the West | :05:18. | :05:19.
Hello and a very good evening to you. | :05:20. | :05:24.
As we head into tomorrow, there will be much more cloud around, | :05:25. | :05:27.
That said, it should be a dry day or, at least, mostly a dry day. | :05:28. | :05:32.
The risk of seeing some fog around in the morning and some frost | :05:33. | :05:35.
will be reduced compared to, for example, this morning. | :05:36. | :05:38.
Temperatures will get down to freezing, or just below freezing, | :05:39. | :05:40.
in many parts of the countryside. Not so, everywhere, you will note. | :05:41. | :05:43.
Indeed, by tomorrow morning, some areas of fog of | :05:44. | :05:45.
will be much more reduced in scope, compared to some recent mornings, | :05:46. | :05:48.
and we will have, largely, a lot of cloud around | :05:49. | :05:50.
Some brighter spells, most certainly. | :05:51. | :05:53.
Possibly, the odd spot of drizzle over the likes of Exmoor, | :05:54. | :05:56.
maybe at times also into the Bristol Channel. | :05:57. | :05:57.
But on the whole, overwhelmingly dry. | :05:58. | :05:59.
Temperatures up compared to the last couple of days. | :06:00. | :06:01.
It is not going to feel that much milder, | :06:02. | :06:04.
not least with all the cloud cover around. | :06:05. | :06:13.
As we head through into Saturday, the brisk wind developing and mean | :06:14. | :06:20.
developing into the early hours of New Year's Day. Also, tunnelling | :06:21. | :06:27.
much colder. We are back with bulletins on BBC breakfast from 625. | :06:28. | :06:29.
Good evening. Hello. Fold and frost has been a | :06:30. | :06:44.
feature of the weather in recent mornings in England and Wales, | :06:45. | :06:47.
producing a wintry scene with Frost in Oxfordshire this morning. In | :06:48. | :06:53.
Highland Scotland, a completely different story. Thank you to our | :06:54. | :06:57.
weather watchers for the photos. Snow on the hills but temperatures | :06:58. | :07:00.
reaching double figures as the wind picked up and the weather systems | :07:01. | :07:03.
knocking on the door. That will be hanging around with outbreaks of | :07:04. | :07:07.
rain, blasting into Friday and Saturday as well. Further south, | :07:08. | :07:09.
barely any | :07:10. | :07:12. |
