A breakthrough in researching Alzheimer's. | :00:08. | :00:14.
Scientists in Bath find a crucial link between sugar | :00:15. | :00:17.
The mother of Christopher Halliwell's last victim fears | :00:18. | :00:22.
he may have killed others, as police say they need more time | :00:23. | :00:25.
Scientists at Bath University may have found a link between | :00:26. | :00:48.
Now it's well-known that high blood sugar can lead to diabetes, | :00:49. | :00:53.
but what hasn't been clear is why diabetes patients have an increased | :00:54. | :00:56.
risk of developing Alzheimer's until now. | :00:57. | :01:01.
This dementia activity club run by the Bristol charity Alive | :01:02. | :01:04.
That's because more and more people are being diagnosed with brain | :01:05. | :01:11.
can double a person's risk of developing dementia | :01:12. | :01:20.
but we still don't really understand how the two conditions are linked. | :01:21. | :01:41.
But these researchers have found a vital clue. | :01:42. | :01:44.
They've identified a specic effect of high blood glucose | :01:45. | :01:47.
on an enzyme in the brains of people with Alzheimers. | :01:48. | :01:49.
Scientists compared samples taken from people who have died | :01:50. | :01:51.
They've developed a test using flourescent light to look | :01:52. | :01:55.
for abnormal proteins in the brain that have been damaged by glucose, | :01:56. | :01:57.
An important function of the protein is insulin, showing there is a clear | :01:58. | :02:08.
link between the immune system, glucose regulation and Alzheimer's. | :02:09. | :02:10.
are now going to investigate if they can detect these | :02:11. | :02:14.
telltale signs in blood for an early diagnosis. | :02:15. | :02:21.
We think it could have power in identifying those at risk with what | :02:22. | :02:27.
we call a mod fable risk factor. High glucose, we could do something | :02:28. | :02:31.
about that, so if we can use this as a simple blood test to identify | :02:32. | :02:37.
those at risk, we could then use to it validate potential interventions | :02:38. | :02:42.
to reduce high glucose, such as dietary changes, lifestyle changes. | :02:43. | :02:44.
The search for answers prevent alzheimemrs | :02:45. | :02:46.
In the last 10 years, the number of adults in the world | :02:47. | :02:51.
living with the disease has jumped from almost 26 million to more | :02:52. | :02:54.
But this latest scientific advance shows another | :02:55. | :02:58.
possible reason to avoid too much sugar. | :02:59. | :03:00.
Earlier I spoke to Dr Tim Shakespeare from | :03:01. | :03:07.
the Alzheimer's Society, and asked him what he made | :03:08. | :03:10.
We knew there was a link between dementia and diabetes but we didn't | :03:11. | :03:25.
know why. This study is helpful, it gives us a clue as to what the link | :03:26. | :03:29.
might be, telling us about the biological mechanisms that might | :03:30. | :03:32.
cause that link and that means we might be able to find ways to have | :03:33. | :03:36.
an effect on it. We might be able to help people with diabetes manage | :03:37. | :03:40.
their risk of dementia better in future. How significant is this | :03:41. | :03:46.
breakthrough? It's a really important finding because it means | :03:47. | :03:50.
that we can now start to look at exactly what that link is and how we | :03:51. | :03:54.
can have effects on it in the future. That might mean that people | :03:55. | :04:00.
with diabetes don't have such an increased risk with dementia in the | :04:01. | :04:03.
future which is valuable to those living with diabetes at the moment. | :04:04. | :04:07.
You mentioned the word future a few times so it's not immediately | :04:08. | :04:11.
translatable to people who do have Alzheimer's at the moment? This | :04:12. | :04:17.
study isn't something that we can immediately translate to benefit | :04:18. | :04:20.
people with diabetes right now. But it's really important because it | :04:21. | :04:23.
does lay the ground work for some future research that will help us to | :04:24. | :04:28.
understand these links and might have benefits for people as time | :04:29. | :04:33.
goes on. Where are we now in terms of tackling Alzheimer's? The state | :04:34. | :04:36.
of Alzheimer's research at the moment is better than ever. We have | :04:37. | :04:40.
made a lot of progress in previous years in understanding the causes of | :04:41. | :04:45.
the disease but we still don't know precisely what the causes are. We | :04:46. | :04:48.
have had treatments recently that have tried to prevent the symptoms | :04:49. | :04:53.
from getting worse but they haven't been successful. We need a lot more | :04:54. | :04:58.
progress and tests of different kinds of treatments in order the | :04:59. | :05:01.
make the breakthrough treatments that people with dementia really | :05:02. | :05:02.
need. Thank you very much. Police in Swindon are tonight | :05:03. | :05:06.
investigating the death of a woman who was involved in a collision | :05:07. | :05:09.
with a road sweeper. It happened outside | :05:10. | :05:12.
Arkells Brewery on Beechcroft Road Officers say she was 32, | :05:13. | :05:14.
from North Swindon and on going She died at the scene and her next | :05:15. | :05:21.
of kin have been informed. The Secretary of State | :05:22. | :05:35.
for Local Government came West today The mother of Christopher | :05:36. | :05:37.
Halliwell's final victim thinks it's almost inevitable there are more yet | :05:38. | :05:56.
to be discovered. She was speaking as the police | :05:57. | :05:59.
announced they'll need more time to continue their forensic search | :06:00. | :06:02.
of his former home in Swindon. Halliwell is already serving a whole | :06:03. | :06:04.
life sentence for the murders of Becky Godden and Sian | :06:05. | :06:07.
O'Callaghan. The police search at the back | :06:08. | :06:08.
of these Swindon houses. The former home of double murderer | :06:09. | :06:15.
Christopher Halliwell. Forensic teams taking away wheelie | :06:16. | :06:20.
bins full of the soil Elaine Pickford's daughter Sian | :06:21. | :06:24.
was halliwells second victim. The question now - | :06:25. | :06:38.
are there others lying The pathological liar sub. He would | :06:39. | :06:52.
have slipped from every day life and then whatever his trigger was, he'd | :06:53. | :06:59.
then be capable to go out and do what he's done to, not only Sian, | :07:00. | :07:02.
but Becky and possibly others. Becky Godden was Halliwell's first | :07:03. | :07:04.
victim, killed in 2003. But did Halliwell offend | :07:05. | :07:06.
in the years before Today police said the search | :07:07. | :07:11.
here would now go on into next week. Initially this was expected to last | :07:12. | :07:26.
five days. Work at the site will pause for the weekend on Friday and | :07:27. | :07:30.
we'll reconvene to commence searching once again on Monday next | :07:31. | :07:32.
week. Halliwell is currently serving | :07:33. | :07:34.
a whole life sentnece. Sian's mother has studied the killer | :07:35. | :07:36.
and believes it's likely Given his nature and history and his | :07:37. | :07:53.
unnatural urges, sexually, I think he wouldn't have been able to have | :07:54. | :07:55.
contained those for eight years. Halliwell appeared to try to make | :07:56. | :07:57.
a plea bargain during interviews If I confess he said, | :07:58. | :08:00.
will that stop everything else? Police say they are digging | :08:01. | :08:07.
here in intelligence they've received but so far haven't said | :08:08. | :08:10.
what, if anything, they've found. An education trust in south | :08:11. | :08:19.
Gloucestershire is considering shortening the school day because it | :08:20. | :08:22.
says it's reached crisis The Olympus Trust which runs | :08:23. | :08:25.
seven schools including Abbeywood and Bradley Stoke, | :08:26. | :08:29.
has written to parents Next year the two secondaries | :08:30. | :08:31.
will have to make savings There were long delays on the M4 | :08:32. | :08:36.
in Wiltshire earlier after it closed The driver wasn't injured but both | :08:37. | :08:46.
sides of the motorway were shut near Chippenham because of heat | :08:47. | :08:50.
and thick smoke. And in Bristol there were more | :08:51. | :08:53.
delays near the M32 after storm Doris caused a man to be hit | :08:54. | :08:55.
by a lump concrete. Eyewitnesses say it | :08:56. | :08:58.
fell from a building. Today in the west we saw | :08:59. | :09:08.
winds of over 60mph. This our reporter Scott Ellis | :09:09. | :09:10.
there being battered And in nearby Clevedon, | :09:11. | :09:19.
planks were pulled off parts The view across the Cheddar | :09:20. | :09:23.
reservoir looked more This is where I leave | :09:24. | :09:29.
you and hand you over to Ian Thank you very much. Good evening. | :09:30. | :09:51.
67mph was the top gusts recorded by Met Office observation stations at | :09:52. | :09:54.
least across the West Country. That was in Somerset. Let me take you | :09:55. | :09:58.
through the forecast for tomorrow. We won't reach wind speeds anything | :09:59. | :10:02.
like that, you will be glad to hear. A different day, chalk and cheese | :10:03. | :10:06.
compared with today with notably lighter winds and a good deal of | :10:07. | :10:10.
fine and dry weather after what will be a noticeably chilly start. | :10:11. | :10:13.
Already the temperatures are dropping away to give a marked wind | :10:14. | :10:20.
chill while we still retain a windy picture. | :10:21. | :10:28.
Despite being fairly cold in the morning, it will be dry and sunny | :10:29. | :10:33.
later. Towards the afternoon, more cloud | :10:34. | :10:37.
starting to develop but still a bright, pleasant enough afternoon as | :10:38. | :10:42.
we head further into the evening, with the cloud thickening up, giving | :10:43. | :10:49.
sprinkles of rain in some areas. Up until the evening period, a good | :10:50. | :10:52.
chance everywhere will have seen a dry day. Temperatures down on today. | :10:53. | :10:59.
For Saturday, it will turn into another windy day, somewhat milder, | :11:00. | :11:01.
Good evening. It was quite a day for some of us. We get these sort of | :11:02. | :11:17.
storms every couple of years also. Difficult to give an exact number, | :11:18. | :11:19.
but it | :11:20. | :11:20. |
