A plan to ease the strain on the NHS. | :00:11. | :00:17.
A new scheme is up and running to reduce the growing | :00:18. | :00:20.
The artwork celebrating the hope given by organ donation. | :00:21. | :00:30.
Tomorrow bring another mild story. That's effectively where the | :00:31. | :00:36.
similarities end. The details at the end of the programme. | :00:37. | :00:44.
A new scheme to try and prevent so called "bed blocking" is up | :00:45. | :00:47.
The local NHS has paid for places in a care home so dementia patients | :00:48. | :00:52.
who are physically fit can move out of hospital wards. | :00:53. | :00:54.
It will help people like Iris Sibley who was stuck at the BRI | :00:55. | :00:57.
for a record six months because there was no suitable care | :00:58. | :01:00.
Here's our Health Correspondent Matthew Hill. | :01:01. | :01:05.
Hello, Mum. Hello, John! | :01:06. | :01:06.
How are you today? I'm fine. | :01:07. | :01:08.
John Sibley visits his 89-year-old mother Iris every day. | :01:09. | :01:12.
She now lives in a comfortable care home which can cater | :01:13. | :01:16.
But last summer, it was very different. | :01:17. | :01:19.
Declared medically fit to leave the BRI within a month, | :01:20. | :01:21.
yet six months later, she was still there, | :01:22. | :01:25.
It's not until you get caught up in the whole system and situation | :01:26. | :01:34.
that you realise that the system is, in fact, broken. | :01:35. | :01:37.
So to fix it, the local NHS has paid for ten dementia | :01:38. | :01:40.
Patients like Pat Tottle can have their needs assessed | :01:41. | :01:43.
here for up to 28 days, instead of on a hospital ward. | :01:44. | :01:49.
The 83-year-old had to spend two weeks in Southmead | :01:50. | :01:53.
after a fall at home, and with the right support, | :01:54. | :01:55.
Because she'd been in a bed for 13 days, her muscle had all gone. | :01:56. | :02:02.
So she had to have a zimmer frame and she did not | :02:03. | :02:06.
Her coordination was not good with eating. | :02:07. | :02:11.
I feel I'm back at home again. I am not quite there yet, but... | :02:12. | :02:17.
This is very much a home from home with all sorts | :02:18. | :02:20.
of objects lying around to trigger childhood memories. | :02:21. | :02:22.
It's also a lot cheaper than staying in hospital, about ?995 a week. | :02:23. | :02:27.
In hospital, it would be more than twice as much. | :02:28. | :02:29.
The scheme has already saved hundreds of thousands of pounds. | :02:30. | :02:35.
I think this is a really positive start. | :02:36. | :02:37.
There are many more people in hospitals with dementia | :02:38. | :02:43.
than ten beds can solve, but actually, if this project | :02:44. | :02:46.
is rolled out and it is researched thoroughly and we can see that | :02:47. | :02:50.
people's outcomes have improved then it has got to be a good thing. | :02:51. | :02:57.
The man in charge of the BRI, where Iris Sibley had to languish | :02:58. | :03:00.
in bed, says lessons have now been learned. | :03:01. | :03:03.
Any patient who has waited longer than four weeks after they're | :03:04. | :03:08.
meant to be discharged, we're going to have a named | :03:09. | :03:10.
individual in our integrated discharge service who is | :03:11. | :03:12.
We will have an appointment system for care homes so we can see | :03:13. | :03:17.
in a real-time basis where the capacity is in care homes, | :03:18. | :03:19.
what places have been offered, where the bottlenecks are. | :03:20. | :03:25.
Fine. Absolutely fine. | :03:26. | :03:32.
And the sooner patients like her are discharged to more | :03:33. | :03:34.
homely surroundings, the better they will do. | :03:35. | :03:41.
An unannounced inspection of Eastwood Park Women's prison | :03:42. | :03:44.
in Gloucestershire has found growing levels of violence and | :03:45. | :03:47.
There are 400 inmates there, 100 more than at the last | :03:48. | :03:52.
More than 75% of the population reported some form of mental health | :03:53. | :03:59.
problem and there were three suicides last year. | :04:00. | :04:03.
Inspectors did find Eastwood Park to be "well-led" | :04:04. | :04:05.
Tonight the Ministry of Justice said the prison is "committed to learning | :04:06. | :04:12.
lessons from the tragic deaths" and they're currently | :04:13. | :04:14.
Plans for fast, regular trains between Portishead | :04:15. | :04:19.
The cost of upgrading the old freight line for passenger | :04:20. | :04:28.
There's now a slower, compromise option under | :04:29. | :04:32.
consideration as our Political Correspondent | :04:33. | :04:33.
It's badly off track - the projected cost for improving | :04:34. | :04:43.
local lines around Bristol has soared from ?58 to ?175 million. | :04:44. | :04:48.
The extra money can't be found so officials are warning | :04:49. | :04:50.
It's certainly a compromise from what we originally intended, | :04:51. | :04:59.
but unfortunately the cost pressures mean we must reduce the scope | :05:00. | :05:03.
of the project in order to deliver a passenger service. | :05:04. | :05:09.
Called MetroWest Phase 1, it includes upgrades and half hourly | :05:10. | :05:11.
trains for the Severn Beach line as well as to Keynsham | :05:12. | :05:14.
But reopening the Portishead line for passenger services is proving | :05:15. | :05:19.
It's presently used for slow freight trains, but enabling it to take | :05:20. | :05:24.
faster passenger services every half hour is hugely challenging. | :05:25. | :05:29.
This area near Ashton Gate shows how complex public transport | :05:30. | :05:31.
A bridge is being completed to take the city's new Metrobus. | :05:32. | :05:37.
Underneath it runs the line that goes all way to Portishead, | :05:38. | :05:43.
and to take two trains an hour, this level crossing would have to be | :05:44. | :05:47.
To provide a more frequent service, virtually the whole freight track | :05:48. | :05:53.
Just the physical access into the gorge is hugely | :05:54. | :06:05.
Instead, they'll settle for the cheaper option, meaning | :06:06. | :06:10.
Not good news for Portishead residents frustrated | :06:11. | :06:13.
That's not many from Portishead, is it? | :06:14. | :06:30.
It's a shame it is only one an hour, but it is better than nothing. | :06:31. | :06:34.
It sounds very disappointing and I doubt if it will ever be | :06:35. | :06:37.
Reopening it for passengers is a long way down the line. | :06:38. | :06:40.
An art installation celebrating organ donation has been unveiled | :06:41. | :06:44.
at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. | :06:45. | :06:46.
The heart is made up of 1,000 messages from people who have both | :06:47. | :06:49.
given and been given the gift of life. | :06:50. | :06:51.
Simon was very fun-loving. He adored his children. | :06:52. | :06:55.
He didn't get much time to be a father, unfortunately. | :06:56. | :07:01.
A decade ago Kerry Mills' life changed forever. | :07:02. | :07:04.
Her husband, Simon, went out on his motorbike | :07:05. | :07:06.
Yeah, just devastated. I knew life would never be the same. | :07:07. | :07:17.
At the height of her grief, Kerry made a decision that meant two | :07:18. | :07:20.
I realised that if they were poorly and they needed an organ, | :07:21. | :07:28.
then I know Simon and I would have been so grateful for anyone | :07:29. | :07:31.
who would have given us the opportunity. | :07:32. | :07:33.
For this family, a message in the centre of this | :07:34. | :07:35.
new heart-shaped mural at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital | :07:36. | :07:37.
is a reminder of someone who will always be close | :07:38. | :07:39.
Each of the 1,000 small tags on this memorial | :07:40. | :07:48.
They are messages from organ donors families, | :07:49. | :07:51.
from the recipients of donors, all a lasting reminder of | :07:52. | :07:53.
There are 91 people in Gloucestershire today | :07:54. | :08:02.
Three people die every day in the UK just waiting. | :08:03. | :08:06.
The other messages on the tags are memories of loved ones and thank | :08:07. | :08:09.
33 years ago, I received a heart from a young man that I had no idea | :08:10. | :08:14.
existed and his family generously gave me a constructive life. | :08:15. | :08:25.
This golden heart featuring 1,000 thank yous is an ongoing appeal | :08:26. | :08:27.
for people to keep making that life-saving decision | :08:28. | :08:30.
A security guard had to be rescued from his own van | :08:31. | :08:41.
An engineer helped free the man who had become trapped and police | :08:42. | :08:46.
were called to the Lloyds Bank in Cinderford as a precaution. | :08:47. | :08:50.
The security firm G4S says the safety of their member of staff, | :08:51. | :08:52.
the money and the van were not compromised. | :08:53. | :08:57.
The vehicle has been returned to a depot for checks. | :08:58. | :09:07.
Courtney Cox has been visiting Thornbury castle to trace her roots. | :09:08. | :09:16.
She is a distant relative of the Barkley family. The actress was | :09:17. | :09:22.
given access to manuscripts dating back to the 14th century. | :09:23. | :09:25.
There's more news on the BBC Website and of course on your local | :09:26. | :09:29.
We're back with you in Breakfast tomorrow from 6.25am. | :09:30. | :09:33.
But for now I'll leave you with Ian who has the forecast. | :09:34. | :09:42.
Good evening. Well, let's take you through the expectations for | :09:43. | :09:48.
tomorrow. Today, the West Country was bathed in sunshine, tomorrow we | :09:49. | :09:55.
will be under a veil of cloud. But there maybe pockets of brightness | :09:56. | :10:02.
develop. The cloud could be giving some patchy outbreaks of drizzle. | :10:03. | :10:05.
Like today all of that will be underpinned by a mild story. Through | :10:06. | :10:10.
the rest of tonight, cloud will be steadily tending to thicken up from | :10:11. | :10:13.
the south-west. That's signalling the approach of a warm front. | :10:14. | :10:16.
Temperatures around seven or eight Celsius and by the early hours we | :10:17. | :10:20.
will start to get drizzle feeding into some western and south-western | :10:21. | :10:23.
areas and you will see there from the map how that tends to ease its | :10:24. | :10:27.
way further north-east wards through tomorrow morning and that cloud | :10:28. | :10:31.
tending to lower with it and we will find through the course of the day | :10:32. | :10:34.
that many of you will be under a lot of cloud. So a difference really | :10:35. | :10:39.
compared to today. That said, as I mentioned, there will be area that | :10:40. | :10:43.
may see something brighter, probably in random fashion through the course | :10:44. | :10:47.
of the afternoon. Temperatures tomorrow 11 to 13 Celsius. So there | :10:48. | :10:51.
could be some spots getting higher than that. Certainly if you had the | :10:52. | :10:55.
sun come out anywhere. Saturday, a very similar story. It is looking | :10:56. | :10:59.
dry. Decent enough day. Again a mild one as well. Cooler on Sunday. We | :11:00. | :11:03.
will have periods of rain moving from | :11:04. | :11:03.
day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe spots of rain. | :11:04. | :11:10.
Good evening, in the spring sunshine we saw temperatures as high as 17.5 | :11:11. | :11:17.
Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled | :11:18. | :11:20.
weather in the forecast for the next few days. This was the sunset | :11:21. | :11:25.
captured by one of our Weather Watchers. Clear skies there. We have | :11:26. | :11:28.
had increasing amounts of cloud moving in from the West. Through the | :11:29. | :11:31.
remainder of tonight we will continue to see that cloud across | :11:32. | :11:35.
the south-west of England, the Channel Isles, weaving in across | :11:36. | :11:38.
Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Bringing with it some | :11:39. | :11:42.
outbreaks of drizzly rain, particularly around the coast and | :11:43. | :11:45.
the hills. Further east, clear skies and the coldest temperatures. We are | :11:46. | :11:49.
likely to see frost across eastern parts of Scotland by Friday morning. | :11:50. | :11:53.
The west of Scotland will see the cloud moving in, bringing spots of | :11:54. | :11:57.
light, drizzly rain. A similar picture for Northern Ireland. Fairly | :11:58. | :12:01.
cloudy and grey. A bit of hill fog here and there. Into the north of | :12:02. | :12:05.
England as well. | :12:06. | :12:06. |
