Welcome to South East Today. My name's John Young. Tonight's top

Another emergency on the Thames a rescue is called off tonight after

:00:28.:00:31.

a tug boat from Gravesend sinks. One man is still missing.

:00:31.:00:33.

Also in tonight's programme: It's Festival Friday and we'll be

:00:33.:00:36.

live with a special programme from Eastbourne Airbourne, the world's

:00:36.:00:40.

biggest free seafront airshow. We'll bring you some breathtaking

:00:40.:00:43.

aerobatic displays, as well as all the entertainment that's on offer

:00:43.:00:47.

down here at ground level. And see how I got on barrel-rolling

over Sussex in a World War II US Good evening. Extradition laws need

:01:07.:01:11.

to be changed. That's the claim today by a man from Kent who was

:01:11.:01:15.

jailed in Portugal for his part in a mass fight at Euro 2004. Garry

:01:15.:01:17.

Mann, a former firefighter who's from Faversham, has just been

:01:17.:01:22.

released after serving half of a two year sentence for rioting. He's

:01:22.:01:25.

always denied the charges and says he simply didn't receive a fair

:01:25.:01:34.

trial. Yvette Austin spoke to him this morning.

:01:34.:01:38.

Portugal 2004 and Garry Mann is led away by police. Football fans were

:01:38.:01:43.

in town and trouble had broken out on the streets. The police said

:01:43.:01:48.

Garry Mann was involved. He said he had been drinking in a bar all

:01:48.:01:52.

along. Legal battles ensued and he found himself in a Portuguese

:01:52.:02:00.

prison. The first few weeks were extremely tough. I was put in a

:02:00.:02:08.

dungeon with no heating or lighting. There was excrement on the wall.

:02:09.:02:13.

He's released brings to an end a seven-year saga. In June 2004 he

:02:13.:02:19.

was arrested, tried and convicted in for take out was. In May last

:02:19.:02:25.

year he was extradited to Portugal and this may he returned to a UK

prison to complete his sentence. Gary man - that Garry Mann says

:02:38.:02:48.
:02:48.:03:01.

that the extradition warrant was unnecessary. The system is used a

a fair trial a broad. -- abroad. was under a fast-track system that

:03:19.:03:24.

does not apply in Portugal. Normally they would give me time to

:03:24.:03:30.

get evidence, talk to my lawyer and have a decent translation. Normally

:03:30.:03:35.

they would have given me time to get CCTV evidence. I did not have

:03:35.:03:40.

any of that. Garry Mann is looking forward to finding a new job and

:03:40.:03:45.

spending time with his family. Kent Police say they can cope with

:03:45.:03:48.

hundreds of job cuts, despite recent demands on the service. The

:03:48.:03:51.

force is having to cut 1,500 jobs to meet a 20% budget reduction.

:03:51.:03:54.

That works out at roughly the same number of extra staff that were

:03:54.:03:57.

needed to cover this week's riots. The union that represents many

:03:57.:04:00.

officers, the Police Federation, says crime will definitely rise if

:04:00.:04:08.

the cuts go ahead, but managers deny that. Review we have been the

:04:08.:04:11.

force at the moment is we are redesigning at one model. We are

:04:11.:04:21.
:04:21.:04:23.

doing it to reassure we -- ensure week reinforce the front line.

:04:23.:04:26.

A search and rescue operation has been called off this evening after

:04:26.:04:29.

a tug boat from Kent sank in the Thames at Greenwich this morning.

:04:29.:04:32.

Chieftain, which is thought to be owned by Palmer Marine Services

:04:32.:04:35.

based in Gravesend, was carrying three crew members one of them is

:04:35.:04:38.

still missing. The incident comes just a week after a man from

:04:38.:04:45.

Swanley died in a similar incident on the river.

:04:45.:04:50.

At the bottom of the screen you can see two men scrambling out of the

:04:50.:04:53.

water to safety. What the picture does not show is that moments

:04:53.:04:59.

earlier, the tug boat they were on sank in the Thames. It happened at

:04:59.:05:04.

around 11 o'clock this morning and a resident in these flat saw it.

:05:04.:05:13.

was in my lounge and I saw eight large barge go by without a tug on

:05:13.:05:22.

a chain. Suddenly, it turned over. Two guys jump out of it and my

:05:22.:05:28.

partner took some photographs. seems that a large barge was being

:05:28.:05:33.

bought by a couple of tug boats. One of them got caught in the

:05:33.:05:37.

middle of the river. It then it flipped over and sank within

:05:37.:05:44.

seconds. It was quite a big barge. It was a massive crane, so you can

:05:44.:05:53.

imagine the weight and size of the thing. The tug boats was a

:05:53.:05:57.

registered in Gravesend and it is believed that is where it was

:05:57.:06:04.

heading. Two men were rescued, but one man is still missing. A major

:06:04.:06:08.

search and rescue operation was launched earlier, but it has now

:06:08.:06:13.

been called off. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have now launched

:06:13.:06:20.

an investigation into what happened. In a moment - it ready for the off

:06:20.:06:26.

and an important date in Kenya. A Sussex charity hopes to meet Barack

:06:26.:06:32.

Obama's grandmother to help tackle famine.

:06:32.:06:36.

But first, it is that time on a Friday evening in August when we

:06:36.:06:40.

leave the studio and head out on the latest of our Festival Friday

:06:40.:06:49.

series. This evening Polly and Rob are at Eastbourne Airbourne. What

:06:49.:06:55.

is the atmosphere like? It is great. You join us at an

:06:55.:07:04.

opportune moment when an American fighter plane is there a HET.

:07:04.:07:08.

Thousands and thousands of people have turned out to see the show, to

:07:08.:07:14.

see us and more importantly, to see the aeroplanes. We've seen

:07:14.:07:17.

aerobatics and we will be seen the Red Arrows.

:07:17.:07:21.

Them as a lot going on on the ground as well. In the main arena

:07:21.:07:27.

there is hand-to-hand combat among us the Marines. In a moment we will

:07:27.:07:30.

speed one of the pilots taking part in the aerobatic displays and we

:07:30.:07:35.

will find out what this event does of tourism in Eastbourne. Firstly,

:07:35.:07:40.

Ian Palmer has been soaking up the atmosphere of the day.

:07:40.:07:46.

Wing walking over Sussex. It must be Eastbourne Airbourne. I never

:07:46.:07:50.

get nervous before a wing walk. I have wanted to it since I was six

:07:50.:07:54.

years old. I have been doing it for five years and every time it is a

:07:54.:08:03.

magical experience. The event has come a long way since it first

:08:03.:08:08.

started in 1993. So much so, Nigel and Carol Smith built their annual

:08:08.:08:18.
:08:18.:08:19.

holiday around it. The airshow at is an extra thing to do. We really

:08:19.:08:25.

enjoy it. For not liking aeroplanes I have become addicted. This bomb-

:08:25.:08:30.

disposal robot is part of an army boat show. Everyone knows an army

:08:30.:08:34.

marches on its stomach and this is where the Cook's try to fill it.

:08:34.:08:40.

The we are chefs by trade, so we look at what the troops are doing.

:08:40.:08:45.

If they have got a heavy schedule, we will know them up with

:08:45.:08:48.

carbohydrates. Jumping out of aeroplanes and helicopters is not

:08:48.:08:53.

normal behaviour, but today there are plenty willing to do it. One of

:08:53.:08:58.

the best ways to enjoy this guy is to get out of their aircraft.

:08:58.:09:02.

Everyone on the display team has at least 200 jams, which is the

:09:02.:09:11.

minimum you need. A special moment was reserved for Britain's plane,

:09:11.:09:16.

the Spitfire. They are fantastic. Just wonderful to see all these

:09:16.:09:25.

people enjoying our history and having fun and feeling very relaxed.

:09:25.:09:30.

It was and relaxing 70 years ago when the skies over the South East

:09:30.:09:35.

were four of World War II fighter planes. Today's Battle of Britain

:09:35.:09:40.

Memorial Flight bypass is a salute to hour aviation history. A History

:09:40.:09:49.

kept alive by this unique event. That Battle of Britain Memorial

:09:49.:09:53.

Flight is one of the most popular events here and we have got one of

:09:53.:10:03.
:10:03.:10:05.

the men involved. Hello. You are responsible for checking of the

:10:05.:10:12.

equipment, aren't you? Yes. I look after parachutes, life preservers,

:10:12.:10:22.
:10:22.:10:25.

oxygen masks. All the kit the aircrew were. -- where. There is

:10:25.:10:34.

quite a responsibility. Yes. If the parachute doesn't work, we will fix

:10:34.:10:42.

it for free! There is a lot of sentiment and emotion involved in

:10:42.:10:51.

watching the Memorial Flight. crowd love it. There are a lot of

:10:51.:10:58.

veterans still around today. The long Custer represents that 55,000

:10:58.:11:08.
:11:08.:11:09.

people who died. -- B Lancaster. This is a big deal for Eastbourne

:11:09.:11:13.

and Rob is finding out what it means for tourism in the area.

:11:13.:11:23.
:11:23.:11:25.

There is a lot for people to get involved in and take a look out.

:11:25.:11:30.

These bomb-disposal robots are similar to those been used in

:11:30.:11:38.

Afghanistan. They read thousands of people here and here, of course, is

:11:38.:11:43.

a Hawk jet. Neil Stanley is from Eastbourne Council. You are pleased

:11:43.:11:47.

to see a lot of people here today, aren't you? It is fantastic.

:11:47.:11:52.

Everyone is having fun. This is hugely important for the town

:11:52.:11:58.

because this event is were up 10 % of the town's income. You yes. It

:11:59.:12:08.
:12:09.:12:11.

is worth 27 million. It puts up son -- us on the map. You did

:12:11.:12:15.

charge for the event a few years ago and the number has dropped off.

:12:15.:12:21.

Can use continue providing the event for free. It is worth the

:12:21.:12:27.

investment. It is busy today. Something like 35,000 ice-creams

:12:27.:12:34.

are sold over the weekend. Back is right. The seafront is heaving and

:12:34.:12:41.

it has been a fantastic day out. Thank you. That a fighter jet is

:12:41.:12:45.

going to continue, so let's go back to the studio.

:12:45.:12:53.

We will go back to East or later. A charity worker from Sussex is

:12:53.:13:03.

hoping to meet President Obama in Kenya. Rick Sharp have sent a

:13:03.:13:07.

makeshift medical centre at to Kenya. The President's grandmother

:13:07.:13:17.
:13:17.:13:24.

Sarah lives in Kenya and he will be Once everything is unloaded in

:13:24.:13:34.
:13:34.:13:35.

Kenya, the container itself will become a medical clinic. At 35,000

:13:35.:13:42.

for a built of brick clinic, we couldn't afford that. Consequently,

:13:42.:13:49.

we hope really going to do 10 of these in five years. It is ideal.

:13:49.:13:53.

The charity has also started a five-year malaria awareness

:13:53.:13:58.

campaign with another charity run by President Obama's grandmother.

:13:58.:14:02.

That will lead to a meeting with President Obama during an official

:14:02.:14:08.

visit to Kenya next month. meeting with President Obama speaks

:14:08.:14:15.

for itself. It raises the profile no end. They announced but Sarah

:14:15.:14:22.

Obama, she is actually putting up money and they said they have

:14:22.:14:28.

already got us on the list and they hope we're going to help. And so

:14:28.:14:38.
:14:38.:14:38.

the container head -- headed off on its trip to Kenya.

:14:38.:14:46.

And thanks to a -- to rig Sharpe himself for getting in touch. If

:14:46.:14:54.

you have got anything to say, you can give us a call or e-mail us, or

:14:54.:15:04.

text us. A 21-year-old man from Dartford who

:15:04.:15:07.

fell overboard in a boating accident off Greece says he's lucky

:15:07.:15:10.

to be alive. Adam Rose fell overboard and was struck by the

:15:10.:15:13.

boat's propeller while on holiday in Zante. He was rescued when his

:15:13.:15:16.

friends dived in to save him from drowning. He's been treated at

:15:16.:15:18.

Darent Valley Hospital. Final preparations are underway for

:15:18.:15:21.

tomorrow's annual Gay Pride Festival in Brighton, with tens of

:15:21.:15:25.

thousands of people expected in the city. For the first time,

:15:25.:15:27.

organisers are charging people to attend the final event at Preston

:15:27.:15:31.

Park. The police say they'll be clamping down if large illegal

:15:31.:15:36.

public parties spring up elsewhere. It's been confirmed that a new

:15:36.:15:40.

world record was set in April for the most hot air balloons to cross

:15:40.:15:42.

the English Channel. 49 balloons crossed from Lydden Hill Race

:15:42.:15:50.

Circuit in Dover to Calais Airport. Football now, and after an almost

:15:50.:15:53.

perfect start to the new football season last weekend, the South

:15:53.:15:56.

East's top teams will be hoping for something similar tomorrow. But, as

:15:56.:16:06.
:16:06.:16:07.

Neil Bell reports, three of them face tricky away games. After the

:16:07.:16:11.

euphoria of their first home win last weekend, Brighton will be

:16:11.:16:21.
:16:21.:16:23.

hoping for an equally impressive result at Portsmouth. I need to be

:16:23.:16:30.

calm and realistic. We need to slowly become a proper championship

:16:30.:16:40.
:16:40.:16:42.

team. If people think it is going to happen this year, we already won

:16:42.:16:48.

the league last year, we need to become. Charlton should be full of

:16:48.:16:51.

confidence for their trip to Notts cans -- Notts County following

:16:51.:17:01.
:17:01.:17:02.

their victory over Bournemouth. This was a sublime strike.

:17:02.:17:12.
:17:12.:17:13.

Gillingham travelled to crew. It is a big day for Crawley, who take on

:17:13.:17:16.

Macclesfield in their first ever home league game. They will be

:17:16.:17:20.

hoping to celebrate with a victory after an impressive draw at Port

:17:20.:17:28.

Vale last Saturday. That is it from me and the rest of

:17:28.:17:33.

the team in the studio but there is now plenty more to come from a rope

:17:33.:17:42.

and pulley at Eastbourne. -- From Rob and Polly. We had just come

:17:42.:17:52.

down to the sea fund. This is a festival on a massive scale. There

:17:52.:17:59.

are 100,000 visitors over format days. They have consumed 35,000

:17:59.:18:03.

ice-creams and they will sway the 1000 gallons of tea and coffee.

:18:03.:18:11.

That is quite a lot! We were going to be seeing the Blades buying but

:18:11.:18:19.

the crowds are a bit low for that. -- flying. We wanted to get an idea

:18:19.:18:25.

of what it is like to actually be in a plane and go up there. I was

:18:25.:18:35.
:18:35.:18:35.

fortunate enough to actually get If you want to loop the loop, there

:18:35.:18:43.

is really only one way to find out if you have got the right stuff.

:18:43.:18:49.

This is a big aeroplane, very powerful. Second -- Second World

:18:49.:18:58.

War training aircraft. With its 600 horsepower engine, it is a very

:18:58.:19:07.

stable, heavy lump. Even so, once she is in the air, she becomes

:19:08.:19:15.

graceful. That was beautiful! Unfortunately, there was a very low

:19:15.:19:25.
:19:25.:19:29.

cloud the day we went up, but we did manage to punch through. Then

:19:29.:19:39.
:19:39.:19:39.

Richard was able to show me what she can really do. That is awesome!

:19:39.:19:46.

What a feeling. Fantastic. And then, after a barrel rolling, we loop the

:19:46.:19:56.
:19:56.:20:00.

loop, going completely upside down over Sussex. The Texan was built by

:20:00.:20:04.

the Americans in the 40s for fighter pilot training and the RAF

:20:04.:20:14.
:20:14.:20:15.

build their own version, calling at the Harvard. These are the kind of

:20:15.:20:19.

aircraft back people who went on to buy spit buyers would have trained

:20:19.:20:27.

in. It really is a privilege. -- Spitfires. Then all too quickly, we

:20:27.:20:35.

were back on the ground. There is a lot of power there, but it is built

:20:35.:20:45.
:20:45.:20:54.

that fires to last. -- of that size to last. When we see the guys at

:20:54.:21:01.

Airbourne, how would that compared to what we just did? I do them

:21:01.:21:09.

slightly lower to the ground and tie them closer together, but that

:21:09.:21:15.

is what you will see at Airbourne. It is brilliant, can we do It

:21:15.:21:24.

Again? It was absolutely fantastic, what a privilege. The blades are

:21:24.:21:28.

one of the world's best aerobatic display teams. They performed

:21:28.:21:36.

earlier on. James from the blades is with us. Tell us about the kind

:21:37.:21:45.

of planes your guys fly? It is a German-built aircraft with

:21:45.:21:54.

formation aerobatics in mind. They really can throw the aircraft

:21:54.:22:04.
:22:04.:22:04.

around. And all of these people, they are ex Red Arrows pilots?

:22:04.:22:09.

they know what they're doing when they're in the sky. And some of the

:22:09.:22:19.
:22:19.:22:24.

stunts are extraordinary. Yes, they're all in formation, it is a

:22:24.:22:28.

real crowd-pleaser. I know people have been really enjoying what has

:22:28.:22:33.

been going on today. Polly is in the depths of the crowd. Yes, we

:22:33.:22:39.

keep saying 100,000 visitors. People have actually come from all

:22:39.:22:45.

over the world to attend. This woman has come from New Zealand.

:22:45.:22:51.

What do you make of it? It is different, but it is also the same.

:22:51.:23:00.

This show is amazing. Yes, it is quite incredible. You have come

:23:00.:23:09.

from Loughborough? Yes, indeed. What do you enjoy about it? Seeing

:23:09.:23:19.
:23:19.:23:21.

the Red Arrows. These girls, what are you enjoying about a day?

:23:21.:23:27.

enjoyed the wing walkers. We do like to do something like that?

:23:27.:23:37.
:23:37.:23:39.

I would like to fly in red arrow. Hello, this is the other thing, it

:23:39.:23:45.

is so loud here! He has the ear protectors on, this little boy. Is

:23:45.:23:51.

he having a good time? Yes, he is loving it? By your local?

:23:51.:24:01.
:24:01.:24:02.

Folkestone. -- Are you local? We hope you all enjoyed it. In the

:24:02.:24:07.

meantime, the cloud is setting and so we're hoping they will have a

:24:07.:24:16.

clear view. Yes, plenty of cloud around. Earlier there was plenty of

:24:16.:24:20.

sunshine along the south coast. As we move into the evening, there

:24:20.:24:29.

will be patchy rain and drizzle. It will clear up around lunchtime

:24:29.:24:36.

tomorrow. If you're planning on coming to Eastbourne Airborne over

:24:36.:24:41.

the weekend, ones that rain clears, it will be increasingly trying to

:24:41.:24:51.
:24:51.:24:52.

the afternoon on Saturday -- dry into the afternoon. Into Sunday,

:24:52.:24:56.

some rain overnight. That should clear through the early hours of

:24:56.:25:02.

Sunday. Plenty of cloud around but fingers crossed for some hazy

:25:02.:25:12.

sunshine. Top temperatures of 21 degrees. As you can see, earlier

:25:12.:25:17.

today it was quite a grey start to the day. Along the south closed

:25:17.:25:27.
:25:27.:25:27.

plenty of hazy sunshine. -- the south coast. There has been some

:25:27.:25:32.

patchy rain and drizzle. As we move into the night, is similar story.

:25:32.:25:37.

Mostly dry but some patchy rain and drizzle. Not until tomorrow morning

:25:37.:25:43.

that we see some rain. Overnight with the cloud cover it will be

:25:43.:25:52.

quite warm. Tomorrow morning, this weather front spreading east. It is

:25:52.:25:58.

likely to be clearing slowly through the morning. In the

:25:58.:26:05.

afternoon, top temperatures of 21 degrees again. On Sunday, once
